Best high end bait caster? 2024

fishing user avatarGgmogollon reply :

Which bait caster do you guys thin is the best for 2017? The Abu MGXtreme2, Shimano metanium MGL, or Daiwa Steez SV TWS?

Thanks

fishing user avatarFrankN209 reply :

The only person who would actually know is someone who owns all 3. The rest of the replies are just opinions.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

I only have the Metanium of the 3 on your list. It is an excellent reel. Great casting capabilities from light baits up to 3/4 oz and the retrieve is very smooth.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

It's the reel you want to fish with the most. Too many variables and different taste preferences to give a precise answer.

fishing user avatardsqui reply :

any reel that says lews on it

Biased much?  :D

Any opinion of mine on these reels would be conjecture.  Way out of my price range.

Lol

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

The new Steez sv tws is apparently one heck of a reel. That info comes straight from the mouth of the best reel tuner around. He even said that he didn't want to like it but it's that good. The man has had his hands on thousands of reels from every company out there ranging from $100 - 3k+ He's also unbiased towards any one company. His collection is all mixed reels. Everyone has their preference though. So the word best is different for everyone. See post above about Lews. Hopefully I'll be trying out a new Steez soon but the Steez ltd sv keeps catching my eye though. Hmm decisions

fishing user avatarEllisJuan reply :

Conquest...lol

Out of what is listed, the Metanium.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Why leave off Shimano Antares, it's their flagship low profile reel?

Based on the 3 models he listed it could should be best high end reel based off it being light weight.

Less and high end shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. Their most expensive reel is under $300. They are more value based reels.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Shinamo Aldebaran is 4.7 oz high end bait casting reel.

I thin it's the highest price tag and this thread is asn9.

Very true, however some want to label the reel as a finesse caster.

He certainly didn't say much in the initial post to give us an idea how he arrived at those 3 only...

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I no longer purchase reels, I don´t need to ( my last reel purchase was a Daiwa SS SV which, btw, sits there waiting to be broken in with several other reels that I haven´t broken in yet ), but right now if I were to shell out 300+ for a reel out of that list I would pick ----> none of those, I would purchase me a non TWS Steez.

Why Steez ? because there´s a bunch of different spools available that fit them ( I´m not much into the handle n´stuff upgrades ) just purchase the spool, and drop it in and the reel can perform another function.

fishing user avatartimsford reply :

I really like the casting of my t-wing reels and I prefer daiwa's braking system and ease of customizing spools and handles. But I can't spend that kind of money. Most of my reels have been bought used but it will probably be awhile before any start coming up for sale I can afford. That being said any reel that costs that much is going to be a sweet reel and I'd be happy with any of those reels.

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

I believe that with any reel over $200 dollars, "and I have several" all that is really gained is bragging rights.

fishing user avatarFishinthefish reply :

I prefer the Shimano Core to every reel listed above.

Simple answer for me. Of the three reels above - I prefer the one that has a nine pound bass on the other end of the line...  ;)

I don't settle with just 9 lbs.

Goose, you should be dragging 11 pounders out of Kentucky Lake.

Hootie

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

I quoted 9 pounds because that is a spectacular fish for my waters, a weight that I've actually caught several times, and a weight that I have a reasonable expectation of catching again.

The point being that we have these "best" threads a zillion times a month, and my thoughts are always the same: Whether I'm using a BPS Pro-Qualifier, or a Calais DC, the "best" reel to me is the one with the big honkin' bass on the end....

fishing user avatarBasswhippa reply :

Goose, you're 9 pound TN nothern strain of the Plateau is similar to a 12 pound Florida.  Course you know that. :P

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

I'm jonesin for a Daiwa Morethan.  No real reason other than I just want it

That's my response when someone comments about a rod being "tip heavy". I like my rod tip heavy by about 7 pounds.

Hootie

fishing user avatarMikeWright reply :

The 12 dollar Zebco spin cast combo...yes guys that's 6 dollars for the reel...6 bucks for the rod...

fishing user avataronetime reply :

Saying which one is best is subjective. Which ever one feels the best to you is what you should go for. Try to handle and possible borrow any of these reels from your friends. What may be best for me, may not be best for you. I have a couple MGL reels, I haven't tried the others you listed, but the MGL is like budda. YMMV

fishing user avataroffsidewing reply :

I've owned a couple Lews reels and just about every freshwater Shimano baitcaster that's come out in the last 2 years - save the Antares.  From my experience, the Metanium MGL is one of the best casting, smoothest retreiving, consistent-iest drag reels I've tried.  And yes, I like it better than the Aldebaran, 2013 Metanium and just a hair better than the mystical Core 50.  I can't compare the Met MGL to the other reels you've mentioned, but the Met MGL is really a versatile baitcaster.  I can put it on a 7' MF rod rated for 1/4oz to 5/8 oz and throw 1/4oz tube jigs with no issue.  Then I can throw it on a beefier rod and hammer lillypads with plastic craws or pull fish out of deep water on football jigs all with smoothness and consistency.  I've caught big fish on most of my reels and the Met MGL felt the best and gives me confidence.  The Met MGL has a good balance of weight, retreive, and drag.

All that said, if you can't find the fish and get them to bite - it doesn't matter what gear you're using.  To me, the quality of the reel doesn't matter until after the fish decides to bite.

sure it does, working baits is part of the fun!

d**n your review above. im back on the japanese sites now.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

High quality fishing gear is all about the "fishing" not about "catching". I have almost as much fun playing with my toys as I do catching fish. If it's just about "catching" an Ugly Stick and virtually any reel will work just fine. Move forward at your own peril!
