I have the 201 I HG, I like the reel.
Now I'm on the fence with the Curado 71.
Would it be worth my while to get one?
Those who own 70/71, what are your thoughts of this Curado?
You want both, so you should own both.
That's my opinion...

It's very worth your while, I have quite a few 200i's and I bought the 70 and I'm very impressed with it. Match made in heaven with my 6'6" avid and a Ito 110 ?

This. It is never a question of "Is it worth it?" At least not until the wife threatens to cut you off at the knees.
In all seriousness. I own both. I've only used the 71 for 3 outings so far, but I can say I think it casts better than the 201. Plus I like the smaller overall size of it.
Mine should arrive any day now. I'm really excited. I was looking for a shallow spool, high quality reel that I could use for a ~1/2oz jig outfit. This seems to fit the bill, and being a Lew's guy I'm pumped to try a Shimano for the first time.
The only question I have is will it be okay with 30lb braid? I've always used 40 or 50lb but really want to try and downsize for clear water applications. Oh, and not to boast but they can be had for nearly 30% off on eBay, here's the auction I won earlier in the week!
Some guys on here use 20# braid and less on casting reels. I always used 40# until I bought a used Alphas F that came with 30# braid. I had to make several casts and pull out extra line each time because the line had dug in a little. Later it went to Florida with me where I got it snagged in lily pads more than once. Don't recall any more digging in. You have to hold the line and reel it up snug every once in awhile so the braid stays fairly packed on the spool. You should be fine..
Yea they can be if cheap on eBay, I bought mine off eBay for $160 before they where even released in the us. I prefer my 70 over my 200is as well. 30lb pound braid will dig when you snag a lure on something and that gets to aggravating for me, I just run 10lb super sniper on my 70
In regards to the wife....I'm divorced so no issue there.
I use 30lb braid on my smaller baitcasters, like the Curado 51, Calcutta 51, Lew's MB and Daiwa Tatula CT.
Haven't had too many problems with this size braid on the reels.
I like the 70 much better than the 200. I never could get comfortable with the 200. I've been using the 70 for a few weeks now, and it's a great reel, but I still prefer the 50e series reels. With the 70 I feel like I'm always adjusting the brakes with lure changes, while the 50s are all set up the same.
The 70s are cheap enough online, that if you like the 200, it's worth trying.
I have two 70HG reels and they are really, really nice reels. Properly adjusted with brakes. outside dial and cast control cap, no back lash at all. It takes care of itself on the cast. Both of mine have 12lb fluorocarbon for plastics fishing.
I like my 71, but not quite as much as my Shimano 50 size reels yet. I'm still trying to dial this thing in. Too many backlashes so far, so more adjustments to be made. I'm sure once I get it right, it will be a regular in my lineup.
Totally worth it, once you properly adjust the brakes you wont backlash and will be able to cast a long distance. Palming the reel is very comfortable. You wont regret buying one.
I also have one ordered so when it arrives, I really hope its a nice reel. I think I'm going to match it with my Expride 66M.
I have a 70XG that I bought to go along with several 200I series. If I had the option, I'd switch them all out to the 70 series.
Mine came yesterday and boy does it cast well on both my 66M Expride and 72M Adrena. I really like the reel. I am going to further adjust to see where it fits my casting style perfect for both distance and control. I would order another one. Makes me wonder if I need to even order an MGL for the Adrena.
A big surprise to me was how tight I could make the cast control cap and still get incredible distance. It took me a while to figure that one out. That was the final adjustment that set it on the money.
I've used a 200i and it's very bulky and heavy. Therefore I own a 70hg and it's amazing I have 15# fluro on it for small jigs and flipping and pitching. Very light and very smooth. Cast farther than 200i
Ok, bit the bullet. Bought the Curado 71HG for $158.95 free shipping, price I'm willing to pay.
I hemmed and hawed about buying the 71HG, I do like the smaller Shimano baitcasters.
Can't wait have it to arrive.
Ive joined the 70 club found a place with then on sale $144 so got 70XG
So the 70 is that nice? I just picked up a 201hg a few weeks ago and love it so far. The local shop didn't have any 70`s to feel. Anybody use the chronarch? If so how would you compare the two?

I've used the 201 and 71, neither are better or even as good as the Chronarch Ci4... but thats why it costs another $70. At the moment, besides my DC reels and my 2016 Stradic Ci4s, the Chronarchs are the only Non-DC Shimano reel I will use. Can be found on ebay for $220-230 now, but I would still pay $270 for them if I had to.
If I had to buy a sub-$200 reel, I would skip over the Curados and get a Daiwa Tatula Type R or the new CT Type R, in my experience they are better than the new curados (that is just my opinion) and they can be picked up for $140 on ebay.

Several people have said that they turn on all of the internal brakes for the best performance. Might be worth a try
I made the move from a 201HG like you did to the 71XHG, and it's been one of the best moves I've made. I'm a fan of the smaller size, but what sealed the deal was how much further I could throw weightless and other lightweight baits with the 71XHG - it's not even close.
So to answer your question - yes, I think it's worth it

I'm in the same boat as you. Love this reel, and I was never a Shimano guy up until trying it.

Ill probably pick up both to try out as I do want both reels lol. I have always had shimano`s growing up and have always like them. They have always done good to me. As I'm new to baitcasters ive picked up a lews for my first and a shimano on my 2nd time around. Ill most likely stick with shimano to complete my arsenal but will expand out to try a higher end lews and an abu Garcia and diawa reels. My go to for now will always be shimano though. But that can change

Hey Preytorien, I believe i fish the same lakes you fish in Indiana.....i also have the curado 70 series (2- 70XG's ) and i love them. I pitch a lot at Geist reservoir and love the fact that i can spool up only 60 yards of fluorocarbon to fill the shallow spool on them. That way i can buy a 200 yard spool of line and get 3 spools worth for $18.00....and they cast like a dream....like the small profile also.

If you fish Geist then yep we frequent the same waters. I don't get out there as much as I'd like. I don't own a powerboat so my fishing is usually from shore, kayak, or wading the White up by Perkinsville. But in agreeable with you, the 71 has been a game changer for me this year
Had my 70 out today had to go with the lower ratio cause well they didnt have higher in stock but I have CI4 for higher speed. This thing ROCKS, for the price I paid, GREAT value.
TWO BIG
Very windy out today 20mph or so with gusts of 30 and getting it set-up wasnt an issue at all. With setting of one brake internal and 4-6 on the dial I fished around the whole lake tailwind crosswind headwind it handled the windy conditions quite well. Used 30# Gamma braid and throwing FAT IKA.

Do you throw all 4 internals on or do you leave a couple out?

I have 2 in, 2 out. I don't throw anything really light, it's my finesse jig rod.

1/20 jighead w/trd 2.75" ned rig
All this talk about Curado 70 is making me want to get another one, even though I don't "need" it.
I love the reel so much that I bought 3 Scorpions. 1 of each speed (6.3:1,HG,XG).
My new workhorse reel. I sold off my old Curados after fishing this reel. They sit along side 2 Metaniums and an Aldebaran and can hold their own against these!

Or... You could hold off 3-4 more months and wait for the Chronarch MGL to come out!
the Chronarch mgl will be a 150 size and Ci4 material from what I understand.

d**n 3 of scorpion, I envy you. I only want one to match my curado 70HG, I like the color black/red on scorpion more than curado but cant justified spending 200 bucks on that reel(actually not me but the wife).
The scorpion and curado are actually the same reel made in malasia(correct me if Im wrong), but from what I heard scorpion trend to cast and reel in smoother than curado.
I end up ordered tatula ct type r for dock skipping and to keep in my car as spare reel.

"Need" is a very subjective word.Like I need food a water,but I NEED the Curado 70

would it help if you could get one for $172 shipped?
https://www.digitaka.com/item.php?item=316288
i ordered my last one, the XG, on a Sunday and received it the next Friday from Digitaka.
i have read posts by 2 or 3 people saying they are a little smoother but I havent tried the Curado to tell you for sure.
hopefully Bluebasser86 will chime in. he has both.
these reels palm better in my hands than the smaller Aldebaran 50. the line capacity is enough for 90% of my fishing. for $175 i think theyre great. when they go on sale it will be a no brainer. you can get a smoother reel that casts farther. you are probably going to pay more and at least to me, will not be as comfortable. after all this is said, these will not replace my Mets or the Aldebaran on my small jig rod.
not sure if i should have bought the 6.3:1 but im interested to compare it to the HG when fishing med depth crankbaits and spinnerbaits with heavy resistance.
I have the 200I, and love it. But been thinking about the 70 for more finese baits.
For Ned Rig, would this be a good choice? As good as a spinning setup?
Can I do heavy flipping/pitching with 3/8-1/2oz jigs with this? Or is the 200 still a better option for that?
Curado 70 would be perfect for flipping and punching. Braid would be preferred because of line capacity. A lot of guys ned with b/c but I feel that spinning optimizes the technique.

I would recommend sticking with the spinning rods for fishing ned rigs, unless you feel comfortable throwing 1/16 ounce heads tied to 8 pound braid on baitcasters. Spinning rods are better suited for that technique, and much cheaper to.
Thanks guys.
I'm nervous getting a 70 because I'm afraid I'll like the smaller size so much that I'll end up hating all my other reels.
So which lures/applications would you NOT recommend the 70 for?

That happened to me ---- Showed to my wife those reels to compare the Curado 70/200I at Bass Pro shop three months ago. I looked at my wife and told her honestly which she would pick. She said that she would pick the 70 due to being smaller frame and feels better. She looked at me, said that I should sell my baitcaster stuff on Ebay and replace with those. (God, I love her for saying that.)
I have obtained 5 baitcaster that has small profile, Feels great with the rod. I still two three pro qualifier which they are my emergency back up reels.
2 Shimano Core MG7,
2 Curado 70 XG
1 Scorpion 70HG.
nice, now you just need an aldebaran 50

I've been punching/pitching weeds all summer. These reals seem like they were made for that!!! Been reeling in 2 lbs fish with 5 lbs of weeds and have not had any problems. I use 50 lbs smackdown braid. Love these reals
