hey. im considering getting this Revo S reel to pair it with a Verita MH and use it mainly for spinnerbaits. i heard good things about the Revo SX, but i think the Revo S could work, and its a little bit cheaper. i throw a lot of spinnerbaits, and my previous rod was really heavy, thats why now im looking for a lighter setup.

so, i would like to know how do you like it, and, what type of break does it has?? i dont really like the 6 pin centrifugal brakes, i have one in my H20 Mettle, but i dont adjust it much.

S centrifugal breaks set 2-3 adjust the tension knob and your set.

You prefer magnetic brakes to cent? Don't judge cent brake by the H2o you have. There is no better braking system than cent, and they are very easy to set up.

Nope. It's brand new. 1) I don't have a spare rod to throw it on right now 2)I haven't gotten a lot of time on the water to even fish this year period.
I have Shimano, Quantums, and one round Abu C4 (musky reel). I am partial to my Shimano reels, as I own the most of those but I am not opposed to using the reel. I just cant make up my mind if I want to sell it for the cash or just hang on and use it.

I have last years model S and love it. I hear the new gen are lighter and maybe a bit more refined.
If thats true that's gotta be one heck of a reel.
I use mine for spinnerbait's exclusivley spooled with 15 # Invisix.
As far as the brakes I use 2, adjust the tension and forgot about it. I can't stand useing a reel with just mag brakes, and don't see the need for dual once I dialed it in.

+1 for the Revo S. The Citica is also a good reel for around 130. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

Yeah I would stick with cent brakes too. Especially since you'll be whipping that spinnerbait out there. Cent brakes help with that first part of the cast when you're hurling that bait out there. Mag brakes help so the spool doesn't overrun as it slows down.
That being said, the revo s is awesome. Really smooth and solid feeling. If you thumb at the end of a cast like I do, you will never need mag brakes. Good luck.

My first baitcast reel was the orra s basically A scaled down version of the S. after some trial and error plus lots of YouTube videos; I pretty much have it down. I don't think you can go wrong with cent brakes.

If you're looking for external mag brake reels around the same price, look at the Daiwa Lexa. I know the price is similar and the few people I have talked to who have them like them alot. Its supposedly capable of casting out the light stuff too. Im not sure if they're widely available yet, but check them out at TW.

If you want a good inexpensive reel with just Mag breaks the Lews Speed Spool is a great choice. They can be had for $80 brand new on ebay. The Speed Spool Tournament is great as well and it has both Mag and Cent brakes. I love mine, you can get them for around $120.
I have last years Revo S model and it's still probably my favorite reel. Set 2 brakes and just forget about it. I want one of the new Revos.

well, in fact, im not even sure magnetic brakes are what i like... i have a Quantum KVD:

that i really like... i use this reel on my worm rod. on the left plate it has a knob with 10 settings, which makes it very easy to adjust and change the adjustment for each bait weight. im assuming this is the magnetic brake.
i also have a Quantum Code, and again, on the left plate, it has a knob, but the knob only has 4 settings. i normally use it on the most loose position, or the one next to it. but if im drastically changing lure weight, i can easily change to the other positions.
and finally, i have the H20 Mettle. this one has the centrifugal pins. i dont remember correctly but i think i have only 2 of them ON and 4 OFF, as when i had 3 and 3 i was lacking casting distance.
mostly i make the adjustments with the smaller knob besides the reel handle. but, on my Quantums, i can easily adjust using the other brake, while on the Mettle its harder to do it, and i risk getting debris or water inside the reel, or worst, dropping the reel plate to the water.... thats basically what i dont like about the mettle. i really like how the reel casts, i rarely get a backlash, and overall im happy with it, i use it for cranks and i would say it is a great reel for the price....
but now i have 2 rods, a Veritas and a Bucoo, and one of them is missing a reel (im installing the Code on the other one)... i was thinking putting the Code on the Bucoo, and getting a new one for the Veritas and use it for spinnerbaits.....
on the 3 reels, i set the brake on the loose side, and then adjust with the small right side knob, and take care to stop the line with my thumb. so, even when im not messing with the brakes that often, i feel the centrifugal brakes are not as convenient...

I would also recomend looking at The lexa. I've spent 2 weeks with mine swapping it between a Denali wj843 and a j955fx Throwing jigs , spinnerbaits ,buzzbaits , The repo man, even some A-rig for good measure . I think it's the smoothest under 150 reel I've ever tried. Worth a look...

I would stick to the Revo S for the Cent brakes. I had an SX, too finiky to throw. Cent brakes are easier to adjust, and better to use IMO.

I have the Revo S and Veritas Micro MH set up and it's a pretty nice lightweight setup. Casts a mile and looks great with the white on white...

I have had my gen 3 Revo S since they came out. On my first 5 outings i absoluletly loved it. It was on par with my Revo Premier with Bocca bearings. On the 6th outing i started to get a clicking noise on the retrieve. I was very upset. I came home and took the whole thing down to the skeleton. THe bearings were loaded with grease and the whole inside had more grease on it than any other reel i have ever opened. I cleaned the grease off of everthing. Greased the gears and oiled the bearings. I have over 10 outings on it since and its running like a champ. It casted like a rocket before, now its amazing. Even with 2 brakes on, im outcasting all my other reels.

I have one of these reels as well. You are aware that this has dual brake system right? The internal centrifigul system supplies the best portion of the braking on this reel in my experience. I don't even think I have the magnetics set as I didn't notice any big difference by having them on or off to be perfectly honest. They probably could have done without the magnetics on this reel. It's not a bad little reel, I'm just curious to know how long it will last me. I treat my stuff great so I think it will do good for a long time.
Like the others have stated, centrifigul brakes and the cast control knob is really all you need. Any reels I've owned with Magnetics are either set to free or 3 and have never needed to have them on more than half or full.

Good info here.
I have also found no need for mag brakes when a reel has cent. Turn that mag brake dial to zero and adjust the cast control knob accordingly. Now engage 2-3 cent brakes and your done. As you become more proficient you will be able to disengage one brake. I normally have only one brake engaged and two on windy days. Any slight adjustments are made with the cast control knob. They say you should heve engaged an even number of brakes, but I've never noticed any difference with even or uneven numbers.

i read the KVD has dual brake system, but i assumed the centrifugals are set... or can you move the settings? i have never messed with them, i thought since it had external brakes, those were the only ones you could adjust....
so, i actually have my reels in the lower position, and i make most of the adjustments with the cast control knob... but sometimes, specially on windy days or with some lures, i need to adjust the other brakes as well... on the Quantums i adjust the knobs, on the H20 i just take more care with my thumb and adjust the cast control knob as best as i can, nly once i have moved the centrifugal brakes....
anyways, i see everybody likes the Revo S, and i have read a lot of comments about it being the perfect match for the Veritas.... so i guess ill get one of those and learn how to use it... i was not too convinced, but having read all of the opinions on it and cent brakes, i think it is worth a look.

No. There is a switch to rotate the side plate off. From there you will engage/disengage the brakes as you need them. When I got mine, none were on and that spool spun lightning fast. I turned on 2, took Mags off and control knob set accordingly and it casts like a dream.
I know a lot of people don't care for Quantum reels, but I own a few and they have all worked great for me. I have an old Shaw Grigsby quantum reel from Dicks ( my first baitcaster) and I still use it today. I still prefer my Shimano's at the end of the day but I wouldn't overlook Quantums. I have a Smoke reel too, which i'm very fond of.

sorry, but i dont understand.... i asked if you can move the settings on the cent brakes, and you answer "no", but then you mention you can rotate the side plate off and engage/disengage the brakes... so, you can actually adjust the cent brakes as well as the mag brake with the dial on the left side plate??? so this reel has 3 adjustments you can make, the centrifugal, the magnetic, and the cast contol knob???

I was saying NO to this statement you made.
You are correct about the 3 adjustments. It's overkill in my opinion, but I still like the reel myself. So under your reel you'll see a sideways switch, pull that to left or right and rotate the sideplate down. You'll see the cent brake system there. Set it at 2, then click it back shut. Start with the mags at 3, or on FREE. Use your cast control knob as you would any reel.

thank you!! i really didnt know that.... i think this is the cause why this is the only reel i may get a backlash now and then... i will adjust the mag brakes next time i go fishing and see if this improves...
so, between the Revo S and the Quantum KVD, which one would you choose?? price is very similar, but i would lean towards the KVD because of the extra brake adjustment... i like the Rev because of the good reviews i heard, and as somebody else mentioned, white reel on a white rod (Veritas) will look good, but, thats a minor issue, ill take function over aesthetics every day...

I have a Gen1 Revo S sitting in a box unused, which I'm debating to sell off or keep it for my own use. I have no experience with any of the Revo products so I can't comment on what I like better. I like my Quantum KVD reel, it works great, I'm just questioning the longevity of the reel. Some of the pieces are cheap on it. I take really good care of my stuff so I expect it to last a long time.
If you're going by looks then I guess the RevoS Gen 3 is your choice. I like my stuff to look nice when paired up too, but it is never a deciding factor for me when putting a rod and reel together. I could care less what people think about how my gear looks. As long as it performs well, that is all that matters. I would openly admit, that I have a few ugly combos but it matters not. They catch fish.....that's what matters.

as i said, i will take function over looks every day, so, its not a deciding factor, i prefer a good dependable reel, even if its not as good looking as a cheaper reel...
i also take good care of my things, my KVD was my first real baitcaster, i bought it new 2 years ago and it is still working great, i really like it... and i think i will like it more when i adjust the cent brakes...
so, what should i get?? with so many reels to choose from, its not easy...

what about the Revo SX?? is it worth the extra $40 or so it costs more than the Revo S??

I have the Gen 2 Revo S and the Gen 2 Revo SX 2012 Model.
I have never had any issues with either one and like them both real well.
The Revo SX does have the Dual Braking system and the S only has Centrifugal. The SX is maybe a little smoother but outside of that IMO the S is just as good for less Money.
I was looking at the Gen 3 S at Cabelas today and they are very nice. That white color is growing on me.

I used a gen 2 SX for a pitching reel for a while and liked it fairly well, It is a mag only reel and some seem to struggle with setting it. if your concerened about backlashes it wouldn't be my first choice.

The Revo SX only has a mag braking system. The revo s has centrifugal only. The stx has a dual braking system, while the revo premier has the IVCB-IV braking system. I had a gen 2 revo SX and had a love/hate relationship with it. I've used mag brake only bcs for years, but I just couldn't dial that reel in to save my life. I know the new SX has gone with the mag trax system which is different than the linear mag system in the gen 2s and that should make the new SX easier to dial in. Still, unless I need a reel for flipping or pitching, now way my $$ goes towards anything with magnetic only brakes.
I have a Gen 3 STX, and I have NEVER once used the magnetic brakes. I just use 2 of the spring loaded centrifugal brakes with slightly looser than recommended spool tension and my thumb and it performs flawlessly. Once I start pitching and flipping, I'll disengage all centrifugal brakes and use the magnetic brakes. But a reel with ONLY mag brakes?? NO.

ok, i guess the general consensus is NOT to get a Magnetic-only brake reel...
this, and the fact that i live in Mexico and i found a great deal on a new Revo S (same price as in the US, while normally things here go for 30%-50% more), helped me make up my mind... im ordering the Revo S probably today... i hope to have it soon, ill post my impressions here once i get it and fish it for a couple of days....

i dont have much experience with reels, as i have been only fishing for about 1 1/2 years... and other than my Quantums i have only tried my friend´s cheap reels from the Shakeaspeare $40 combos... but i guess i will like this reel combo a lot, i keep reading good reviews about the Veritas/Revo paired together...

thanx!! the rod had actually a small blemish, but i inspected it carefully and its only comestical, its missing a paint chip of about 1/4" long and 1/8" wide... i hope fish dont notice it...
