Budget Swimbait Rod & Reel 2024

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Thinking about buying a cheap rod and reel to start getting into swimbaits, Like maybe a Abu Vengeance or a Academy ethos rod and a Daiwa Millionaire-S reel, Do y'all think a swimbait setup around 100-120$ would be worth getting or just waiting till I can get something more specialized....

Any other other rods or reels in the 60$ range that y'all would recommend?

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I have the Abu Garcia Vengeace and have 0 complaints. Okay, so it's not a G. Loomis, but it performs very well. Like many people will tell you, when ordering an Abu Garcia rod, they're typically heaver in action than their rating might suggest. So my 6'6 Med actually feels like a 6'6 Med H. Just something to keep in mind if you go with it. Also, you might try trolling around the flea market or asking people if they have a 80-100 rod you could pick up for 50-60 bucks.

Good luck on your search!

fishing user avatarthehooligan reply :

Depending on the weights you plan on throwing, i picked up a cardiff 301 for $90, and a daiwa jupiter rod for $30. $120 was dirt cheap for a nice setup able to throw up to about 2oz swimbaits...

fishing user avatarcbass12 reply :

I've got a Cardiff 301A in the flea martket for $75 if that is something that interests you. As far as rods, I use a BPS Extreme 7'10" H/XF. They're on sale right now for $59 as BPS is coming out with a new model. I bought it from Bluebasser86 and the only reason he sold it to me was he won a free swimbait rod from another website. I really like it.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Yeah I saw your cardiff for sale, dunno if I'd wanna buy a lefty. I'd have to think about It...

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

What size swimbaits?

Either way I would seriously consider the extreme. Really nice rod for an awesome price and it would give you some flexibility on the price of whatever reel you buy.

Hmm I couldn't find them on the BPS website...

I was thinking something that could throw 2oz lures, then I could throw some Mattlures bluegills and those Hudd 68s

The only rods they had left online yesterday were 6' MH and 7'6" H. If you have one near your area you could go check their stock, or maybe have a nearby store find one at another store and have it sent there.

fishing user avatarcbass12 reply :

Nevermind, just looked on their website and they're back to normal price............

I am guessing that *** equals tw ?

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

That looks to be what I've been looking for, also.  I'd like something that will throw arigs and up to 7" swimbaits.   Maybe someone will come by and tell us it sucks....since my fishing gear budget is pretty well blown for this month already

Buy a diawa DX. There are cheap and I have not heard anything bad about them. The M/H is rated 1-6 but for you I guess I would get the heavy at 2-8. You say your only going to throw 2 oz baits but that wont last. I am sure the rod woll cast 2 oz far enough and could probably go lighter or you can always use your regular bass rods. Don't short your self on power. I would rather have more power then I think I needed then not have enough.

What are you looking to get rid of?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I have a 7' 6" H/F Ethos I bought for $40 as a fill in until my custom was done and it served the purpose well enough that I kept it for a back up swimbait rod.

I don't even know if they carry the heavy rods anymore, went in academy and didn't see any H/F ethos, same with the website...

You might try calling a store and seeing if they have any in stock in any of the stores. There was at least 2 in one of the stores by me that were the 7' 6" H/F as of last week, both for $45 apiece. I'm guessing they'd ship to a different store for pickup for no charge like BPS or Cabela's does. FWIW, they didn't have any H/F Ethos listed on their website when I bought mine early this year either.

fishing user avatarCarolinaBoy4Life reply :

Honestly a good starting setup would be an Okuma Guide Select rod H and a Shimano Cardiff 300 if your a righty. I have 4 of these setups and love em. I have more expensive LDC rod's and setups but I use these side by side with them and they are great for the price

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I started with a BPS Graphite Musky Rod 7'6"MH with a Cardiff 300.  Reel....$110, rod....$60.  Well lets just say it has performed well although I did buy a Lexa 300.  Can throw the 68's all the way up to the 10" Mattlures Dead Twitch.  But if you're looking at just throwing he 68's and the U2's I'd find a H action 7'3" to 7'6" and use that with a regular reel.  I throw a 68 on a 7'6"MH older Bionic rod with a BPS Extreme reel and it handles it fine.

Yeah it was 60$ then they dropped it even lower to 50$ I'm really thinking about ordering it but it might sit reel-less for awhile till I can scrape some extra money together for a decent reel for it.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I've got it in a cart with a $70 Krios -- probably won't pull the trigger, but I'm tempted

St.criox mojo bass rod swim bait model and get a cranking reel. Pq 5.3:1

Bout to get the same setup how do u like it the rod is rated for lures up to 1 1/2 ounces n I got 2 ounce hudds

fishing user avatarthehooligan reply :

2oz is the heaviest I'd throw on that rod. Really not that bad of a rod for the money...

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

Okuma GS/Cardiff 300 combo can be had for right at $200. You'll quickly want to expand on your bait choices and limiting yourself is just a waste of money because you'll have to buy another rod to throw bigger baits.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Yeah I decided I'd rather just save up and buy a better combo that will last me forever than buy something that will be less than ideal... I can wait.
