I'm looking for a new swimbait rod for 2-3oz swimbaits.
Any recommendations? I don't really have a price range if you can justify to me why I need the rod you recommend.
Dobyns 795
Ldc mh production
My main rod is a custom build on a Saint Croix 4C79HF. It handles baits up to 4 oz. well. I think they still make it in the LTB line, if you want a factory build. I had mine made with a full rear grip and spiral wrapped micros.
The other is an Okuma Mat Daddy. I put a full review on it in our articles section. Look for the "Who's Your Daddy" title. It's a really good rod for the money, and makes a heluva punching rod, if you don't mind switching out reels.
Hi, all the rods mentioned above will handle swimbaits.
What I suggest is that you determine the weight of the swimbaits you are using and match that weight and your favorite line test to any rods you are considering.
There are light weight hollow body and heavy swim baits so to give you one rod for all swimbaits may not be appropriate.
And you can research "swimbait rods" and locate those that are made especially for the swimbaits you throw.
I bought Blue's BPS Extreme 7'10" H/XF this spring and it has handled big baits very well for me. He really liked it, and the only reason he got rid of it was he won a free swimbait rod from another site. It's rated 1/2-3 oz. Not the most glamorous recommendation but it's a very good rod, expecially when you can get them for $69 on sale.
Don't have a price range? Get MB Destroyer Black Jungle Super Red Demon, handles anything from 1/2-8 oz which is really sweet
I use an Okuma Guide Select and a custom.
Although the price on them have slowly crept up a bit, the Okuma Guide Select Series Big Bait Casting Rods are still a decent stick at a reasonable price.

It must be magical If it will load and throw a 1/2oz and a 8 ounce bait lolOn 7/28/2014 at 9:06 PM, IAY said:Don't have a price range? Get MB Destroyer Black Jungle Super Red Demon, handles anything from 1/2-8 oz which is really sweet
I looked at the 7'10 Destroyer, it's telescopic and that would be handy but then again I'm not sure I'm sold on a $570 telescopic rod.
The main things I'm looking for are a nice long handle and a blank that loads good throwing 2-3oz baits
As of now I'm looking at
Okuma
Dobyns
Phoenix
I use the Dobyns 795ML and a Tackle Industries Musky rod
Phenix M1 Swimbait H
St croix mojo bass 7'9 heavy fast the cheaper little brother to the one j Franco is talking about
Tight lines

Do you have this rod? I think I'm going to get one but I don't know if I want the Heavy or the MH?
The MH does 1/2-3 oz and the H is rated at 1-6. As of now the baits I'll throw the most are 2oz
This is what I'm wanting to throw.
Hardgill
Huddleson 68
5" Bull Shad

Phenix M1 Swimbait Casting Rod 8' Med Hvy
I nearly jumped on that Phenix rod myself Hi Salenity.... It's sweet looking, nice build! Man if you get one? Post a pic with you're reel, fish, and swimbait !!
Good luck Dude !
That beautiful big Brown truck just left my house!
It looks like a nice rod and it's definitely not a broomstick. It has plenary of tip and should load nicely.
BTW, it's a Phenix M1 Swimbait Casting Rod 8' Med Hvy with a BB2 on it spooled with 20# Red Label.
Nice... I shoulda bought it as well, a couple years ago I think it was made with 3M nano resin... Maybe you got one! Oh, by the way, nice Blade!!On 8/2/2014 at 1:16 AM, Hi Salenity said:BTW, it's a Phenix M1 Swimbait Casting Rod 8' Med Hvy with a BB2 on it spooled with 20# Red Label.
Why should anyone recommend a rod and be required to justify it? Take some time and pick out a rod that you are satisfied with.
Try the search tool and look up swimbaits rods, lots of current threads on this topic. Use the gear tool to focus the search.

I agree with WRB, everyone has their preferences on what they fish. Some spend a fortune on their rod, others find a rod that fits what they are looking to do. As for me, I choose to fish an IM6 rod since I prefer to fish topshots of mono or fc and prefer the softer action IM6 has. As for what brand, well use a BPS Graphite Musky Rod in a 7'6"MH as well as the H action. But that's my preference and fits my fishing style and the requirements and spec's of what I was looking for.

I don't think you understood what I was trying to say. I was trying to say that if someone recommends an expensive rod that they explain to me what makes that rod worth the money.
I ended up buying a low-mid range rod. To me I think it will be fine for no more than I use a swimbait.
My point was simple, the information you were looking for was on this site recently.
You already ordered the rod you wanted and now have posted your purchase of the Phenix swimbait rod, which is actually more expensive than either Okuma Guide special or Daiwa swimbait rod.
Good luck with your swimbait fishing, you are happy with your rod choice and that is what counts at the end of the day.

Okuma Guide Select Big Bait Series 7'11" XH rated for 2 - 10 ounces.

Thanks for all your help. LOL
I have a old school crucial thats rated for inches... not weight. Lol

How many inches are you rated for? LOL
I use a Berkley Lightning Rod Shock 7'6" umbrella rig rod that is rated to 3 oz. It was regularly $39.99 and I had a 20% off discount so I got it for $32.00. I have caught a ton of fish off it. It makes a good frog rod as well and backup jig/flipping stick. It is no IMX, but they normally attack a swimbait anyway. Wish I had it when I hooked a 12 to 13 pounder last year rather than the 7'2" Skeet Big Worm rod.
Don't worry Curt... you are well below the rating.
I like the handle on that rod. I think that reel's got to go, though, lol.

Yea, I was looking for a 300 Curado but I wan across this BB2 used at a great price so I figured I'd try it. It's got the big spool, centrifical breaks and longer handle but I haven't used it yet so I don't know if I'll like it or not...
I love my Curado 301E for these types of lures and techniques (as well as umbrella rigs) but if you don't absolutely have to go low pro then it might be worth looking into the D series Calcutta. All of this is of course assuming that you don't find your Lew's to be acceptable. Who knows it could turn out to be one of your favorite reels, Lew's has a ton of support and momentum right now. Not to mention a lot of happy customers. They have to be doing something right.
I choose to use the Duckett White Ice Velvick Casting Rod 7'11" Heavy for swimbaits, It is a great rod and does the job very well but the problem is I'm not much on throwing big swimbaits so I don't use it a whole bunch. Here in La. we have way to many cypress tree's to flip and pitch around, so swimbaits are not fished quite as much as other states. I'm more of a flipping/punching person myself. So I'm not really sure how much I can help you with your questions, The Duckett is an amazing swimbait rod though. Try it out and see for yourself.
Forget the swimbait tool. Nice Spyderco!

I agree that the Endura is a very nice piece of cutlery but I never cared for the waved version. Also if I'm not mistaken that's also a ZDP-189 blade, better keep that bad boy nice and dry. My collection is pretty much split right down the middle between Spyderco and Benchmade, I think I actually own a few more Spydies but my favorite company of the two is Benchmade.

I have the wave and the standard one. Sometimes I Cary one sometimes I Cary the other, the hard part is trying to remember what's in my pocket.
I've never had a problem with rust on any of my Spydercos?
I got to use the rod yesterday and I like it. The rod and the reel both worked well. Unfortunately I didn't catch anything on it but I did hook into one in the 5# range on a Hud 68. I had it on for quite awhile before it came unbuttoned. It may have been my fault,I had the drag pretty tight and it may have just ripped the hook out? I was going to rig it with a treble hook in the back but just didn't get around to it.
I did get a 16.8# Flathead fishing a Jig. That would have the new rod a workout.

Nice fish even though it wasn't a bass. What'd you think about the reel? I know one trip wasn't nearly enough time to form a solid opinion but what were your first impressions?

The only Spydie I've ever had rust issues with (they were very minimal even then) was a ZDP-189 Delica. To be fair I did purchase this knife at a show and not from a shop and it didn't have it's box. On the up side the knife was in new and uncarried condition and I got it for a nice price. I'm not so sure that the small rust issue that the knife later developed didn't start before I purchased it because the "gentleman" I bought it off of didn't appear to be taking the best care of his stock.
Spyderco makes a fantastic product, doesn't matter which knife you choose. In my opinion though any of the models that come out of the Golden facility are particularly special.
Here's what I've been tossing in my pocket everyday for the last 2 plus years.

I liked the reel but I did have some unknown problem, I made a cast without any problems and immediately made another cast. On that cast my line broke with about 1" of line coming out of the spool but the spool was spinning ? It was weird because the line broke like I forgot to press the button to make a cast but the spool was spinning so that obviously wasn't the problem? Anyhow I casted a Hud 68 into about 35fow
I did manage to buy a Curado 300 today thanks Alonerankin2!
And as far as my new Spyderco goes I broke the clip off of it today :-/
BTW, nice Benchmade!
Yea, Hi Salenity you're going love that 300E it's going to be awesome on you're rod too!
Nice blades fellas!
If I'm not totally mistaken Spyderco will send you a new clip for it if you call or e-mail them. As long as you didn't strip the screws you can just put it back on the same side, in the case that the threads are bad well you'll just have to get used to the clip being on the other side OR you can buy a new liner for the handle which or course will come pre-drilled and ready for installation.
Yes you're going to love the CU 300. I think it's well established here than I'm a Shimano "diehard" but I really do try and keep my posts honest. I was very surprised the first time I fished my 301E by the power of the retrieve. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it but you'll understand once you've fished yours. Mine is also one of my most solid reels, I'm talking this thing is a tank. I've "upgraded" my spool bearing to Boca hybrid 5's but honestly the thing fished great with the stock bearings after I properly cleaned and oiled them. So much so that I've seriously given thought to going back to Shimano bearings in this particular reel because really all the Boca's have added are manageability issues. The reel was much more controllable if that makes sense to you with the stock bearings.
I've never spooled it with anything but 20 or 25# CXX as of yet because I don't like braid for my A-Rig fishing but I'm sure that's when I'd be able to really appreciate the Boca's slight performance gains. I'm a real braid fan and the only two rods I don't have braid on are this one and my crankbait rod. I've always been able to cast much easier and farther using braid than mono, fluoro, or copoly so I might spool this reel up some day soon with some braid just to see how it does because it will absolutely launch a Whopper Plopper now.
No Doubt, lots of time with the 300D , I think the 300 series are soo overlooked.... I couldn't have said it better War Eagle 44, on the stock bearings? They just accelerate perfectly, no need for upgraded bearings, nice post, and very true!
