Since I've gotten back into fishing and discovered buying gear is like CRACK, has anyone out there spent more than a grand $$$ on one set-up, and what, pray-tell is it?
Thanks, in advance, for all the fun!
My set-up cap is around $300 on my last 3 set-ups, but I can't wait to hear what everyone else says.
My setup cap is 500 for now, none have even got close to that, but then again I'm 16 and buy my own setups.
An NRX and Steez will put you there. Any two Megabass combos outside the Orochi XX. My most expensive set up is a DX744 with a Team Lew's Pro. Love that thing.
There are some guys that have for sure......
on one rod + one reel? i didn't pay retail price for very many of my set ups as i usually buy during holiday sales but a lot of mine retail for 400+ and a couple that are 600+.
i have some $400-700 reels but all my rods are custom builds built by me lol and the materials don't usually come out to $300+ so not me
Two of my fly rods are near that range.....
Sage Bass II largemouth matched up with a lamson velocity
Sage 7wt XP with a Galvan reel and SA GPX line
Both those combos are up there in cost but you also have to remember that one fly rod can do the work of pretty much 4-5 conventional set ups so the cost isn't as bad when you convince yourself of that like i do when i buy a new combo
Where is redline Robert?
Are upgrades to a reel factored in or just the price of the actual reel? Also are we talking retail value of what we paid for each?
I have one that tops out just over $900 for what I paid for the everything. If we are talking retail it is over 1k.
NRX casting rod 873 - retail at $550 purchased for $385 as a Rep sample
JDM tdz 100m purchased mint for $250
90 mm RCS handle for $130
Daiwa cork knobs $50
Custom cast control knob and drag star $70
Carbontex drag $8
Abec7 hearings $25
Brass 6:3.1 gears $25
Total in reel = $558 plus $385 for rod = $943 and if we are talking full retail it would be close to $1100.
Most of my outfits are in the $300 - $600 range.
Most expensive rod/reel set up I have is an Abu Garcia LTZ-L paired with a St Croix LXC68MXF it was about $900 before tax.. Lets just say I got that stuffed delivered to my work instead of home.
My new $9.99 Shakespeare rod, my $54 Okuma Exipior reel and my $12 vicious 12lb line. I run very affordable setups. I have too many other hobbies. I recently spent $22 on a rod.
I collect IH TRACTORS. cub cadets, farmall cubs, Int 154 loboys and restore them.
I have a NRX with a super tuned Core 50 with $50 worth of line on it
If I paid list price for everything I'd be over 1K

I also have a tuned 50e with a hand built MHX rod with the same specs as my NRX. I've probably got just over $300 in everything and I like it more.
I don't think I have, I've bought a shimano core 51 with a dobyns champ extreme spooled with tatsu but I don't think that breaks a grand.i usually spend anywhere from 400-600 on average for set ups. Although I'm considering a megabass destroyer x7 with a shimano metanium xg for a new set up. I'm only 16, this is gonna be a life long addiction.
Steez rod with zillion type r and tuned parts would be around a grand.
Dx702c with a bnib pixy turned into pixzilla with carbon handle and knobs would be close in terms of parts added etc
Have a zillion 100sha which I bought coastal zillion parts for, had it tuned and upgraded and custom painted. With a champion 734 it is close. Put it with a higher end rod and it would Def be over.
If I had a disposable income, I know I would own a few combos over $1000. Unfortunately, I can't afford that. I think that at some point you reach the point of diminishing returns and you get less for your money as the price goes higher. That doesn't mean I wouldn't go there if I could though.
My most expensive setup retail - GLX 894 (460) + Paired with my Chronarch 200E6 (200) - 660 - but I bought them on sale 390+180=570. I don't see myself going higher than that.
I've got a Steez on a G Loomis MBR842C GLX, which comes close at retail. And I've got another Steez on a St Croix Xtreme 7'MF rod, which also comes close at retail. However, since I bought all of them used, I pretty much have less than half of that in each setup. 2 for the price of one!
Calling Redline!!! Where are you Robert??
I have several. Stella/NRX; Calais DC/NRX; Calais DC/Kistler Z-bone; Steez/NRX (x2).
Are they all that much better than other combos I have at 1/2 the value? Some yes, some no. The 2 DC's are awesome, but large and heavy for this price range. The Steez's, not much of a fan. The Stella is super smooth, but not really worth the price tag, IMO, compared to other spinning reels I have.
The rods are all worth the coin to me because I fish a lot of bottom contact baits and they are all super sensitive, resulting in more fish in the boat.
Where are the Monoblock owners?
Nope. Most expensive...my cost...is $440, but new the reel probably would have cost that much. Unfortunately this combo seldom gets used since I seldom fish where I could put it to use.
Not even close. My most expensive combo cost me about $200.
Tom
My fly setups, yes. My bass setups, no. Most bass stuff is in the $4-600 range with a few in the $7-900 range.
My most expensive combo retail is my cumulus/core combo. $770 retail. Throw in a $100 zpi cf handle and $30 bocas and were at $900.
8.2oz's, very sensitive, and a pleasure to fish with.
I like nice stuff but I just don't see how I could justify $1,000 on a combo. Most of my combos are St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass rods with E series Curados on them. Most expensive would probably be my LTB/C14 spinning combo though and that's not even halfway there, especially since I didn't pay retail for any of them
Great replies. It's scary how much money can be spent on fishing. Most of my current set-ups ran me between $175 - 200, less the Shakespeare combo I bought from Bra-Wey Sports (long closed) when I was a teenager.
I am curious, however, if there's a big difference if I were to jump to the $400+ range for a 'big name' setup. I have a BPS Tournament Pro, 2 PQ's, a BPS JM/CL and a pair of Pflueger President spinning reels on rods ranging from Veritas, Carbon Lites, Micro Lites, and a Vendetta. All my bait-casters throw quite well for less than 24 months experience.
Thanks again for the great replies, keep them coming!
My 5 wt NRX fly rod, Galvan reel, and GPX line unfortunately take me into the neighborhood. As far as bass gear goes, fortunately a ways away with my NRX 893 and Chronarch.

Exactly!

I'll take one of these

and this rod

oops, broke the budget, lol!
I don't have any combo that expensive but if I had a $1000.00 in my hand, it wouldn't bother me a bit on spend it on a rod n reel. Just thinking of things that cost me more than a $1000.00 is easy. My bow with all of the accessories, M1A Scout Squad, Bushmaster Gas Piston Upper for my AR. A $1000.00 for top quality gear is a money well spent IMHO!
I have a Curado 200E7, on a St. Croix rod. Purchased them separately over the course of about 6 months.

I think this sums up my feelings on the topic. I don't have anything near that price range and do just fine, but I have fished with a enough high-end stuff to appreciate the difference. For many of us it is collecting that drives the purchase of all varieties of gear. Whether that makes sense comes down to personal choice and income. I don't think $105 to fill my truck makes any sense, but prices are what they are.

And I thought putting $55 in my car was the pits! Of course I do it 2-3 times a week tho not always that much, thank goodness!
Fortunately I don't do that often, but with gas pushing $4 and a 30 gallon tank I've done $100+ a couple of times. Although I'm told there is no inflation, my expenses seem to indicate otherwise...

My wife tells me inflation is alive and well. What really hurts me is the $600 less a month I now make, and that there has been no work at my second job since the first of May.
On topic, I have to say I am surprised with a couple of the low cost outfits being used. Sorry. Gifts don't count.
I also picked up a Daiwa V.I.P. Smallmouth and couple Quantum Touring PT rods for $49 apiece...just to name a couple more low cost items. A Trion for $50 and one for $45, a couple Carbonlites for $55 apiece, and a package deal of 3 Black Max 1600 reels for $100 total. Only used one of these reels so far, but it does an excellent job throwing light lures and throwing into the wind without backlashing.
I have a DX744 Steez 103 combo that retails for around that... Of course I spent no where near that :-)
Salt
St. Croix Avid Surf $300
Shimano Sustain 6000FG $379
$679...
Freshwater
Dobyns Champ 684CB $219
Shimano Chronarch $200
$419...
My drop shot would beat it Cumara/Stradic Ci4 but the rod was a gift which my brother only paid $120 for it.
The sole combo I have that is over a grand is a Megabass Destroyer and a Megabass Ito reel.
Total of something like $1300. Stupidest purchase I've ever made for tackle, too. I don't even use it...
All my other stuff is $550-$850.

Because you don't like either? Or because you fear putting a mark on either? You could give me a crazy good deal on both. I would use them.
I have a St.Croix Legend Xtreme 7ft Medium fast action($390) with a Shimano Calais 200 DC($650) also add $20 for the Sufix 832 line and you get $1060
