Shimano faith is dented 2024

fishing user avatarhuskertko reply :

I just returned my third Citica 100 today because of problems with the reel.  :) >;) The first two had issues with the cast control knob and the last one, the super stopper anti reverse was not working right.  There was about 1/2"-3/4" of play in the reel when it was engaged.

I own some of the older Curados and have never had one problem with them, am I just getting bum steers or what is the deal?

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

Sounds like Murphy at his finest.

fishing user avataraggiebassin reply :

i think you have just been having bad luck.  the people that i know that have citicas absolutely love them

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I've never heard of anybody getting three bad Shimano's.

I think a letter to the company is in order.

I know, the first one I figured was an anomaly, the second was just strange, and now the third is upsetting.

I just bought a new pair of Costa sunglasses, but now the baitmonkey is saying, you know if you take those back and with the money from the returned Citica, you can afford a Chronarch MG, so now I am thinking about that or a Zilion.

I was thinking that as well, they all were from Cabela's.

fishing user avatarBanor reply :

Obviously this is unnacceptable... I'd be rather miffed if it was me.

That being said, just remember citica's are on the lower end of the price point.  The chances of quality not being perfect is greater.

However, it's still time to register some complaints.

fishing user avatarbighed reply :

I've been having some grief from my Curados as well.  Two of the 100B's and one of the 100D's have started feeling pretty rough both casting and retrieving.  I fish often but baby my tackle pretty good.    None of the reels are over two years old.  I've just picked up two that I had cleaned and lubed and they are not any better.  I decided to send one to Shimano and see how it comes out.  Ended up buying two Johnny Morris reels to help get me through the reel shortage.  They were on sale at the BPS spring deal for just over $100.  They feel and cast very nice for the money.  Maybe I should look into the Revo's.  big

I just got a Castaic 200SF in from Mich.

Guy took it out of the box, spooled it, cast it once and cranked the line back in, hit the thumbar to cast a second time the reel wouldn't disengage (no free spool). Sends it to me, the pinion yoke has both ends of it sheared off. Now this reel also came from Cabela's..

    Coincidence.. :-/

Not really, I have heard of instances were a retail store will get a return and set the reel back into the inventory for re-sale if they have a on-line catalog. They do this instead of returning the merchandise for the credit, and so that the manufacturer can be notified of potential failures. Then the manufacturer gets blamed for putting out garbage and not listening, by the public.

Just my .02¢

fishing user avatarHawgin reply :

That is strange luck for you.  I have two Citica 200D's and one 100DSV and they are as smooth and nice as anything I have used.  I hate to see you have the problems with Shimano reels.  I will also say that while I haven't had bad service at Cabela's, I haven't had the best service either.  Now that I have one BPS open within 40 minutes drive, and another being built that's 20 minutes away, I doubt I will be spending much time or money at Cabelas.

fishing user avatarBanor reply :

This is why I get my major equipment from the local tackle shop owner who calls in the order to his distributor the day I ask for it.  It hasnt sat on his shelf and been handled by countless customers or pre-owned for a few days.

Of course I have no idea how long it's been at the distributor.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I would send the reels to Shimano direct, accompanied with a BUSINESS letter describing the problem in detail and the fact that these reels have already been exchanged with Cabela's three times. State SPECIFICALLY that you would like the reels replaced DIRECT per your mailing instructions. I suggest calling the Marketing Department and getting a SPECIFIC name and address for mailing. Be sure to note the name of the person you speak with. I'm sure you will receive a great deal of personal attention in correcting the situation.

I have always receive prompt and courteous service from Cabela's and am VERY surprised that they have not been able to resove this problem themselves. However, three chances are too many and another would not be in the cards for me. Go direct.

I would do this, however I have already returned it to cabelas and got my money back.  I will try BPS since it is not a 30 minute drive if I need to return or exchange something.

Like I said, I may just return my new sunglasses and use that money with the money for the returned reel and get a Chronarch MG since this is the reel that goes on my Loomis rod.

Too funny Raul,  I still like the looks of the Daiwa Zillion, same price as the MG, so I guess I will have to see which feels better.  I know the MG is much lighter, so that is a definite plus for it.

I bought two shimano citicas from the same cabelas as you huskertko, i am assuming the one in KCK, I did have to take one back after about three trips out with it, something broke internally and it would not turn the spool and you could hear something rattling, since it wasnt very old I just took it back and havent had trouble with the new one.

Yeah, I got them at the KCK location, unfortunately, I am really gun shy about buying reels there now, that is why I didn't jump on the TD-Z sale they had. It is not such a big deal since BPS is much closer and generally the prices for reels and rods is very similar.

Hmmm . . . . I've bought a few reels (including three Shimanos) at Cabelas in KCK and have yet to get a bad one.  This makes me worry.  Huskertko, are you sure somebody didn't take a Pflueger or a Quantum and paint the Shimano logo on it?   :;)  :)

fishing user avatarhuskertko reply :

That is why I kept exchaning them,  I figured there is now way I will get two bad ones in a row, then I did.  Thought there is no way on this green earth that I am getting 3 bad shimanos in a row, and what do ya know it happened.  I am not sure of what or why it happened, but I just bought a Shimano Chronarch 50 MG from BPS today, now if that goes bad, I am going to quit fishing :) because then it must be me not the equipment.

fishing user avatarfish-fighting-illini reply :

Husker,

Watch your back the posse will be out in force and you stand a ggod chance of ending up on the wrong end of a rope!

Don't worry you won't hang though some guy riding a horse named Pflueger will catch you before you stretch your neck!

This ought to stir them up!  lol

While I know that passing on a charitable situation like that might seem heartless, it is stupid to instantly bash the company for not participating unless you know what their charitable donations are.  Virtually every large company in the US does charitable donation (if only for the tax breaks) so I imagine that Shimano is doing something on their own.  It's also silly to assume that BPS (or whoever was running this promotion) wasn't profiting in some way from it and perhaps Shimano didn't feel that the program was being run properly or being correctly distributed.  If Sally Struthers organized every tackle company except one to give 75 cents a day for poor African children it would be silly to blame the one company since perhaps they didn't like that their donations ALSO went to paying Sally for her time along with the salaries of everyone who is working for this organization and that only 15 cents of their donation ACTUALLY went to a starving child.  If the company would rather just give money to the poor directly then great.  The bottom line is that it is naeive to think that BPS or Cabelas or Daiwa etc. was doing this promotion ONLY to help young kids get into the sport.... because the more young kids who fish the more who get bitten by the bait monkey and spend TONS of money on gear they don't really need.  ;D

well 1st ,, i dont wanna bash shimano ,,, but i had to ... i just think this fishing sport is so great and could be even greater if more companys would get involved ..... this whole BPS thing really strikes a nerve with me .... see it was such an easy way to say ,, we care about the future of fishing .... it was an even easier way to get more kidds hooked on fishing that more than likly would have been buyin shimano reels when they where adults .... i mean it really was a no brainer .....

now the whole take me fishing campane isnt helping many ive been reading about this program and have yet to really see take me fishing doing anything other than writing little bits on shimanos web page ... i dont want shimano to give every kid a free reel ... i just want to know im supporting companys that are helping other people ...THATS IT ....BPS,,, quantum,, diawa,,, and any other companys that where involved with the reel exchange should be praised .... this reel exchange was a great program and im glad to see there are still companys that care about the youth and our sport ..... we fisherman have to watch whats going on in our sport ....  ;D  im not even mad anymore just dissapointed .....
