Question On Palomar Knot 2025

I've been using the palomar knot for awhile now but more recently I've been losing baits and it seems like the knot actually comes loose (the line is all curly at the end) now my question is, is there a recommended length for keeping on while cutting the remaining line? I probably tend to cut it too short but not sure.

The Palomar is one of the few knots that is easy to tie and has a low failure rate, that said I usually trim it close and leave a little less than 1/8", it is close to 1/16". What kind of line? The reason I ask is I did have problems with the Palomar on one line, and that was P-Line CXXX, for some reason it would slip to the point I would have to leave almost 1/4" on the tag and retie after every fish, needless to say the line was history after two trips.

That is the same kind of line, the fluoro coated nylon and no matter the tag end it will give you fits. You made need to try using the san diego jam knot, for some reason the coating on those lines is slick to the point of the palomar slipping.

Never is an absolute word, so the operative word is seldom. Seldom does any knot I tie slip or fail, whether it's mono, copoly or braid, being absolute I never use a palomar knot.......anymore. IMO the palomar is not the easiest or fastest. I also seldom have the need to retie unless there is abrasion due to rocks and coral, or gill plates from certain species. The closest I get to flouro line is flouro leaders and Pline flouroclear, I have not had the need to seek a knot or better knot, doesn't mean that I don't retie if I'm unhappy with the first attempt.
If you like the palomar, by all means use it.

To each his own. I think the palomar is the easiest knot to tie. Ive never had that knot fail and I always cut very short tag ends no matter what knot I'm using. Being that the line your using is a coated line, could it be that the coated shell is slipping or the core is drawing away from the coat in the lower test size? That line is highly acclaimed here but I avoid lines that have a coated outer shell.

Funny,I had the same dang problem last week. One slipped today on a rock bass. Got frustrated and ended up using a uni knot the rest of the day.
I don't have problems with P-line CXX in 6# test using palomar knot.
I think I'm gonna learn this San Diego jam knot. See what happens next time I go out.

Same line? I've been using more heavier (3/8) than what I normally use and it always gets off (2 times already) when I'm casting hard on accident (trying to get to a specific spot with my 6ft ugly stik and spinning reel)On 5/14/2012 at 2:03 AM, grimlin said:Funny,I had the same dang problem last week. Yup same line. Yo zuri hybrid US 6# test, I'm using maybe 1/4oz weight at the most. Nothing heavier than 3/8 here.

When using those types of lines(Yo-Zuir, P-Line etc...) I always leave a longer then normal tag to avoid it slipping and pulling back thru.

Are you burning the line when you tighten it?
Are there "waves" in the line?
If so, you have "burned" the line and the know will fail.
If you run your thumbnail across the line by the hook's eye after tieing the knot and feel any waves or rough line, cut it out and start over.

Grimlin, at the Boy Scout Jamboree at A.P. Hill I worked Berkely's knot strength machine at Berkley's display and you are correct. The Palamor Knot was the best of all knots tied by the boy scouts.

I use a palomar knot most often but not always, it's a good knot when tied properly. ALWAYS wet your mono or flouro or copoly no matter what knot you tie. As far as how much tag to leave; I typically leave a much longer tail than most. I leave 1/2 inch on any hook and a full inch or more on cranks,spinner baits,or top waters. The longer tag not only won't slip, but more important is flexable enough to bend and not collect weeds, slime, or other debris that at times plagues a knot. Try this just one trip fishing and you'll be amazed at how clean of crap your knot stays.

If your not wetting the line I expect that is the issue. I use CXX, granted its way higher test, with the Palomar 99% of the time and havent had any problems.

Wetting the knot is a must. Like previously mentioned, it will "burn" the line causing it to weaken and your line to break. I slobber on it like an english bulldog when tying just to be safe. If you feel any tension when pulling the knot tight, you have probably compromised the line strength. I would cut and retie. Also, i use the Palomar knot 100% of the time and have never had a break at the knot or any point in my line for that matter. I too use Yo zuri in 6-8 lbs and 12-15

When I tie a palomar I always give it a couple of good pulls before I start throwing the bait. Sometimes you can look at the knot and just tell if it will hold.

I use yo-zuri hybrid on all of my rods except for 2! Never had a problem with Palomar knot. (6lb or 12lb) It is all I use except for joining leaders which I hardly do! Wet it and pull tight. Trim and you are ready to fish!

After I pull the main line on a palomar I also bite the tag and pull that tight too. Usually you can pull a little more from the tag end. I only tie a palomar with the exception of a snell for flipping.

You also need to pay attention during the tie. Do not let the loops twist. If you pay attention during the tie, you'll see what I mean by twist. When I've tied a proper palomar knot, it will cinch down (after wetting) very smoothly and easily while pulling on BOTH ends at the same time. When I've let the loops twist during the tie, one of the lines wants to pull tight easier than the other. (one may not want to pull tight at all)That is when I cut and try again. I've been using Yo Zuri for a number of years now. No break offs. I too use 6# and 12#.

The way I was taught is to pull the main line to get it snug [after wetting] then pull tag end to tighten.
Again, thats just the way I do it and have never had it slip or fail.

Try the knot that PowerPro suggests for their braid, it is excellent. I never have a problem with it. If you are using a big lure. it takes d**n near two feet of line to use the palomar.

That's similar to how I tie mine. Main line first until snug, then tag, then I'll pull on both just to make sure. I leave almost no tag on mine and I've never had one pull off. I use Sufix Performance Braid.

Didn't read all the replies so sorry if this ones been suggested. I'm using Yo-Zuri Ultra 8# on a spinning and 12# on a baitcaster, try the Pitzen (also known as 16/20) with lots of spit, trim as usual.
It's VERY EASY to tie and seems very reliable.
Forgot to mention, when you tie it correctly you will feel a little "pop or snap" as it seats in place.
