Don't Throw A Spinnerbait On A Crankbait Rod!!! 2025

fishing user avatarWbeadlescomb reply :

Got a local lake I used to fish occasionally and haven't been back there in years. It was drained down so low when the new pipeline came thru I thought all the fish had died. It's rough getting in there and i wanted to go play in my jeep, then check the lake out. I had my crank bait rod in there from the other day and nothing rigged on it. I get down to the lake and I see something chasing baitfish and go to digging in my jeep and the only thing in there was a spinnerbait that had been hanging from my rear view mirror for years.

Long story short I got 12-15 hellacious bites and only hooked two bass that were 3+. The rod was just too soft to get a hook in them it made me sick.

Should have sharpened the hooks lol

Stupid spinnerbait was still basically brand new. You'd see a huge swirl on the bait I set back on the fish and here comes a spinnerbait. One fish hit it 3 times. I'll be back down there tomorrow though.

fishing user avatargripnrip reply :

Did you have a stinger on your spinnerbait?  I highly doubt it was the rod.  I had no d**n clue back in the day and I didn't ever have a problem of getting hooked on a less than ideal rod.

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

It wasnt the rod

fishing user avatarjbw252 reply :

It's time to hang some crankbaits from your mirror...

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

Good sharp hooks make a good spinnerbait and should have penetrated. I don't like soft rods for spinnerbaits but in open water they work, are you sure the fish weren't hitting the blades?  I've had days were the fish smashed my spinnerbait but they wouldn't hit the hook, just the blades and there isn't a rod that will help, the best cure is a a smaller sized bait, and there is a tip for you, if you get fish hitting the blades of a spinnerbait, it is telling you the bait is too big, downsize and go back at them but you only had 1 bait so you get a pass.

A heavier crank rod can handle spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. If I was having that many missed strikes, I would add a trailer hook as maybe they were striking the skirt and missing the hook.

My 705cb has enough power to stick them unless it's a heavier Spinnerbait in which case I use a 734 heavy action. Unless you are using a noodle of a rod (which does have it's uses), I would assume they were short striking it.

X2. I also threw them on my Powell 695cb before I got the 705cb champion
fishing user avatarmjseverson24 reply :

I throw some of my bigger spinnerbaits on the Clunn glass rods, the heavy action SB rod, it has plenty of power to set the hook from quite a ways. I also have the skeet glass cranking rod, and I would not use that for spinners as it would probably have a hook up ratio issue. Hope you figure out what was wrong... good luck...

fishing user avatarWbeadlescomb reply :

Just not being prepared is what was wrong. It's a Powell diesel crankbait rod and it's a medium/fast. I could sweep the rod 5 foot and not move the bait an inch. May ease back down there a little more prepared this evening.

if the spinnerbait comes flying back at you when you try to set the hook, sounds to me like the fish just bumped or slashed at the spinnerbait and didn't actually have it in its mouth. back in the day, a lot of guys threw spinnerbaits on fiberglass cranking rods. in fact, lamiglas had a gerald beck signature rod designed specifically for this called the "crank 'n blade".

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

My biggest problem sometimes I'm too slow on the hookset. I find myself kind of strike struck for a few seconds I got a strike.

But, I have found my rod to me not stiff enough for a good solid quick hookset too.

I'm older and slower now so probably most of my fish hook themselves. I'm really slow on the reaction time I need to workout.

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

Definitely not ideal

The 705cb definitely can stick a spinnerbait in. I love throwing small 1/4 spinnerbaits on that glass rod, no issues with larger ones either.

fishing user avatarJason Penn reply :

i pretty much live in mod-action land for all moving baits.  my hook up ratio greatly increased with spinnerbaits when i switched over to a mh-power crank rod from fast action rods.  the only time i had problems hooking fish with this type rod is when using terminator spinnerbaits.  the titanium wire would flex so much that i needed a faster action rod to offset it.

to me, the slower action rod pierces the fish rather yank it in, and it's harder for the fish to actually throw the bait.  this was the same thing i experienced when i first started fishing a jighead/finesse worm on spinning tackle.  i tried to set the hook like i normally do with a worm or a jig, and i was actually ripping a large hole in the fishes mouth, giving plenty of room for the hook to come out.  when i started just kinda reeling and letting the rod load up, the hook would just pierce in there, and it was actually difficult for me to get out. i started losing lots less fish.

now, in saying all of this, i actually have a fast action rod that i really like using for spinnerbaits.  it's a daiwa ballistic 6'9 mh worm/jig rod.  i hated it for fishing plastics because it bends deep, but it is fantastic for spinnerbaits.  it has a fast tip, but it really loads up with a fish on.  i'm pretty sure it might make an excellent topwater and jerkbait rod, but i haven't tried it for those yet.

Just go get 'em and post pics!!!!!

fishing user avatarWbeadlescomb reply :

Should have taken pics but It was raining and left my phone in the jeep. Caught 19 In about an hour and a half on a swim jig.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

I always throw spinnerbaits on glass or composite rods and have a very high hook up rate, and I rarely use a trailer hook because I fish weed choked lakes. A use a 7' MH BPS Crankin Stick for most of my spinnerbait work, and a 7' M crankin' stick for 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits, which I use a lot for slower retrieves in shallow water.

fishing user avatarAQUA VELVA reply :

I throw SB's and CB's on BPS Crankin Sticks and have no problems hooking up. I use trailer hooks on all of my SB's . Im pretty sure your rod was not the problem.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

rod is not the issue.

it is almost standard practice to throw deep divers and larger spinnerbaits on the same rod.

many people throw 3/8oz spinnerbaits on med/mod action rods.

reason for this is you want the fish to suck it in, a faster rod will pull the bait away from the fish, also the slower action keeps the fish pinned and not as likely to throw the bait.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Like the others, I doubt it was the rod. And if you can sweep it five feet and the lure doesn't move, you must be using a long piece of spaghetti.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Ever see this?

It is

fishing user avatarrangerjockey reply :

I actually own that rod, The 5 power powell is a medium heavy, it handles deep little N's and 5XD'S fine. I'm surprised you would have trouble pulling a spinnerbait with it.

fishing user avatarBuckMaxx reply :

Wasnt the rod i fish buzzbaits on my H flipping stick all the time. I can sling a big buzzer and hit the nxt county
