Anyone still use trilene XL? 2025

Man, i keep coming back to this line for my spinning reels. I have tried many different ones but this stuff just casts like a dream for me. I keep looking bc its not the strongest line around. But i just don't see many folks talk about it.

Does the Yo Zuri Ultra Soft cast as well? I have used the regular hybrid and it was decent but i still like the XL better.

I use xl I like it, but what do you mean it is not the strongest I think I have had pretty good luck without breakage.

I use 6# Xl on my UL rig. Great stuff. When you say it's not the strongest, do you mean it lacks abrasion resistance? BTW, I have never lost a fish with this line. Good mono. 8-)

I did a strength test on 13 different 12lb mono lines last year. Trilene XL was among the weakest (only stronger than cajun, spiderwire, and tourney tough). It had a average breaking strength of 9lbs. P-line was the strongest with an average breaking strength of 15.5lbs (no exactly a surprise since it had the largest diameter in the test group). Suffix siege came in second followed by Trilene XT.

Nope, not even a consideration. When you don't care about

landing bluegill, crappie, stocker trout or white bass, I think

it's fine. Otherwise, there are much better options.

I've never posted before, but adding to this thread seemed as good a time as any

I've used Trilene XL exclusively for the past few years 6lb and 8lb (I like finesse fishing). I've caught many large fish over the years and it's never failed me I'm a Cracker from Central Florida, so they're only green fish and don't fight very hard (so I hear), but I DO CARE about landing them. :

Trilene XL is probably the most popular line made, with Stren being a close second. I suspect most fisherman have used these brands at one time or another. If you like it, I see no particular reason to change. However, if you experiment with other brands, I think you will find another you would like better.

That's why I posted this, I have tried just about everything and I keep coming back to XL. I have never been broken off even in big hybrids BUT the stuff sometimes breaks when pulling a knot and it is easy to break off when I'm hung up.

I just can't find a line that handles as well as XL but stronger.

This is the only line I use and I have had no problems with it to date. I use it for trout and redfish as well in the bays and river. It casts great and is cheap enough to change when neccesary.

Your suggestion on trying different lines is commendable, however, your assumption that I haven't experimented with alternatives to XL is wrong. I've been fortunate enough to find myself in the position to fish 200 days a year or so for the past decade and have found that XL is the best choice for my type of fishing I know it may not meet everyone's needs. I like the stretch of mono and, with the drag set correctly, I've never had a fish break me off BUT I do want to be able to break it off at the hook when I get snagged because I've seen too many water birds, otters, and other wildlife fouled in braid and heavier lines. Fishing is a catharsis for me and I like to keep it simple.

I guess the point of my post is simply this: If the original poster is happy with XL, then continue to use it. Just because something is not cutting edge technology doesn't make it inferior to newer products.

Ill order some Ultra Soft and give it a try. I don't remember trying Gamma and I prefer Xl over Maxima.

I might also try Triple Fish X rated bc it is my absolute favorite line on baitcasters. I think you said you had trouble with the TF flouro but this stuff is so limp but does NOT get nicked up on rocks. Its tough stuff!

I've spent the last three years trying out different lines, and at one point, had 7 different lines on a dozen rods used for different applications.

I keep going back to XL, because it's the easiest handling line out there. So, this year I bought 3000 yard spools of XL in 10 and 12, 1000 yards spools of 6, 8 and 14, and use it for everything.

My two crankbait rods still have Sufix Elite spooled up, but when it's time to re-spool, those will being getting XL as well.

I've finally decided that having all those diferent lines, for all different applications, was just a bit over the top. I've been simplifying my tackle selection, so I've simplified my line selection as well.

It ain't broke, and I've finally stopped trying to fix it.

I've used XL for over twenty years. In that time I've tried other lines, but always come back to my trusty XL. I've never lost a fish due to line breakage, and I haven't found a line that suits my needs as well as XL.

As Gary said, why try to fix what isn't broke?

YZ is OK, Maxima is OK, too. Gamma is IMO is overpriced junk.

I like regular YZ Hybrid for plastics fishing, but that's it. XL and XT satisfy all my other needs as well or better than any other "designer brand" out there.

I used to have this EXACT same problem. The stuff never broke off a fish on me, thankfully, but it did seem to have a frequent problem of breaking when I tied on a lure, and also when I was snagged up, I'd lose the lure before I could retrieve it.

I switched to Stren (not sure of the tag that goes with it, like Trilene has the XL, but the Stren I use is in the purple box, and I use 8 lb. for spinners and 12 lb. for baitcasters, clear/blue mono). I get my Stren now in the exact same size as the Trilene XL I used to use. It pretty much feels like the same line, casts just as smootly as the XL used to, it's very limp feeling, but it doesn't break on me when tying on a lure now, and has not broken by accident yet on a snag, sometimes I cuss at it cause I'm TRYING to break the line when I'm hopelessly hung up and the rig is out of reach either in 30 feet of water or 30 feet up in a tree......but the stuff still won't break!!! I don't know whether to be happy about that or not sometimes. At least I'll never lose a fish due to line snapping off!!!

As far as I'm concerned, I've found my line and it's Stren. But trust me, when they say it has cast control, it does not mean it won't go into the trees. ;D

I guess, like Tampa Tom this is as good a place as any to make my first post.

I don't really care for Trilene, XL or XT. I have been fishing for a long time with mostly Stren. Last year while reading Bassmasters magazine I noticed a lot of pro's use Berkley line so I tried XL. I lost a few fish on 6lb test so I tried the XT but didn't like the stiffness. Looking back now it was probably my knots that were the problem, I switched from a Palomar knot to a Trilene knot while using the XL and XT lines. lost to many fish though to give it another try.

Since then I have tried Vanish and hated it. It was very brittle and I couldn't get a good knot in it.

Yo-Zuri hybrid was ok but it seems to "spring" off the spool and wrap underneath it.

This year I went back to good ole' Stren. Just last week I snagged a submerged tree limb with 8lb test. I cut the line and was trying to pull the excess mono in by hand and I actually brought the tree to the surface. The limb had to weigh over 50 lbs. I sure don't regret going back to Stren.

Get you some Trilene Big Game and see how you like it. I switched many years ago and like it a lot. Use the green instead of the clear.
