Sc Avid Mh Too Heavy For My Uses? 2025

I'm playing around with the SC Avid 7' MH/F I bought today and am wondering if I have too much rod for pitching 3/8 - 1/2 oz jigs into light-to-moderate cover.
Should I have gotten the M? The MH feels pretty stiff. I want this to be my main jig/work rod. I can swing back to BPS tomorrow and exchange it for the M if need be. Unfortunately, I won't get a true test for at least 3 months

You will want MH to be able to get a good hookset on a jig.

I don't have a 7' M/F Avid, but I do have a 7' M/F LTB, and my 7' MH/F Avid and my 7' MH/F LTB pretty much feel the same to me, so it's safe to say the 7' M/F Avid would be pretty combarable to my 7' M/F LTB. With all that nonsense out of the way....If I had to chose one to fish jigs, anytime, anywhere it would be the MH/F. It will handle jigs down to 1/4oz, and all the way up to 1oz +, and I would rather have the extra power for heavier cover situations. I do fish jigs on the 7' M/F, but it's in limited niche situations. So IMHO, stick with the MH/F, or do what I would do.....buy both. LOL.

The mh/f is ideal for the weights you mentioned. It may seem really stiff but once you have it on the water you will appreciate it.

Definitely, although this thing is pretty firm for a MH. It may not hurt to have the extra power should I need it, though, as long as I'm not losing sensitivity while doing the bulk of my fishing.

I'll second the MHF endorsement. I have a mojo and a rage series in that power/speed combo and for heavier cover and jig fishing i like the MHF. It also doubles as a pretty good buzzfrog rod as well.

My daily fisher is a MH Compre 6'8. I fish everything from soft plastics to crankbaits with it. Thanks. This is exactly what I was hoping for - that this MH will cover all the bases and provide that little extra power should I need it.

I think that was my issue - that I can't head straight out to the water to give it a test run and would spend the next few months wondering if I made the right choice. The responses in this thread have made me feel much better.

How do you like your Rage? I have a free one coming for buying two St. Croixs and was pondering whether to sell it keep it. If I don't sell the Rage, I'd probably use it for my spinnerbait rod. Just need to figure out what length/power/action I'd want the Rage to be so I can send the paperwork into SC.

I like lighter powered rods but with 1/2oz-3/4oz jigs I use MH SC Premier or Shim Clarus. You need to factor in the nice RageTail Craw that will be on there as a trailer the weight of that and 1/2oz jig will shoot to 3/4oz or so.

A mh is a good power for that, if I had to go to a different action it would be a heavy not a medium.

Yes, I do agree that the MH power is right for this type of fishing, however I was a bit concerned that this particular rod has heavier power than I'd need.

Oh ok I see what your asking, i haven't fished this rod so I don't know about it. I think it would be perfect because I use a heavy powered rod for jigs in the 3/8-1/2 ounce range.

The 7 m/f Avid is a wonderful stick. Love it. But it is not a primary jig rod. Stick with the mh for jigs.

What do you guys primarily throw on the 7'M/F? I have a free SC Rage Rod coming and need to pick the model I want. I was considering getting the 7'1" M/F for T-Rigs as it should a little bit stouter than a "standard" M and I generally don't throw any substantially weighted plastics.
Or I may just sell the Rage, but I don't think I'd get as much for it as I'd like.

You could use lighter T-rigs, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, traps, senkos, it's a real multipurpose stick. I use a 7' M/F mojo for my traps and open water spinnerbaits.

Medium heavy rod with fast action tip.
Did you bring your reel to the tackle shop to set up the rod before you purchased it?
Did you have your rod's specifictions written down so you can balance the rod with the line test and bait weights you will be throwing? Is the rod designed for your technique?
I like the medium heavy rods although I do have some mediums. The mediums were purchased based on the specifications and the manufacturers' claims that the rod can handle a specific line test and bait weight and presentation.

I throw some lighter T-rigs on it, say 1/4 ounce or less. Also makes a great shallow crank and squarebill rod, and last season it developed into a nice chatterbait rod for me.

I own both the medium and medium heavy and the MH will be perfect for your uses. I use the medium as my "ultralight" casting rod. I spool up with 20# superslick and cast 3/16 oz bass jigs or even 1/8 if I have the wind at my back. You will love your new rod and also the lifetime warranty

I had it out for a short while last weekend and I really liked the extra power when pulling jigs from the brush. Rod felt great all-in-all. that said, it was freezing cold and windy so I didn't stay long nor did I catch anything.
Going to be about 50 here today do I will be taking it out again and hopefully I'll catch something this time!
