Line for drop shotting 2025

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

Are you guys using braid to fluoro for drop shotting too? If so are you going lighter on the braid like 10 or 12 pound. This is a big step for me coverting all my spinning gear to braid. I've fought the urge up to now. But the savings in line alone is worth it. I will usually spool my reel with all fluorocarbon.

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

I use 15 braid with 7lb sniper for leader on my drop shot set up.  Its the only way to go IMO because I don't have to deal with line twist and respooling.

fishing user avatarS Hovanec reply :

Crap mono backer, 50yds of 10# or 15# braid, 18' fluoro leader.  That's what is on all of my DS setups.  Well, not all.  I do have one with 8# braid.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

yep, braid to fluoro for this guy....  i use 10# braid and usually 8# fluoro

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

I just ordered some 12 pound Sunline SX1. Gonna give it a shot.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Yes. I'll use a FC leader, or more common,
a Yo-Zuri Hybrid leader of 6-8#

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

I panicked about regarding the diameter size and jumped up to the 16 pound SX1.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

Most of my spinning reels are spooled with 15lb PowerPro.  For dropshotting I'll use 6-10lb fluoro as a leader, anywhere from 20-30" in length (I just eyeball it and pull a length of leader out).

fishing user avatarCgrinder reply :

Depends on depth. Braid with a leader is a good catch all though.

Normally I don´t use either as main line, when I do it´s always 30 lbs Power Pro, why ? because braided line doesn´t perform well where I fish most of the time and if you many times have breakage problem with 30 lbs I just can´t imagine what would happen with less than that.

fishing user avatarjtipton91 reply :

I use straight pline cx copolymer 8lb. Seems to do just fine for me. Just have to make sure the drag is set correctly.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

For weeds, docks, bed fishing, and other shallow applications, I use 15# braid and fluoro leader material (not reel fill). Any deeper, open water drop shot, it's straight 6# Tatsu.

fishing user avatarChrisD46 reply :

Although I like braid to FC leaders - for drop shot I like straight InvisX #6 lb FC or #7 lb. Sunline Sniper - but here's the catch : I use VMC spinshot (swivel) drop shot hooks which prevent line twist . Less knots to tie , better line feel to bait and overall I feel I get more bites with a straight FC with my drop shot set up .

fishing user avatarMDBowHunter reply :

Braid to mono leader here, Ive never saw no real benefit to using fluoro as a leader besides it sinks, but that's what a sinker is for. I also believe that braid with a mono leader will give a slower fall rate which I feel is a good thing in a finesse situation. I use 20# braid only because it's the same diameter as the 6lb leader I use, and by doing this it's much easier to tie the leader to the main line.

fishing user avatarwnspain reply :

12# or 15# braid tipped by 6# YoZuri.

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

Only thing I ever use is 4,5,6 pound sunline sniper fc.

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

10# braid with either 8# fluoro or 4# Yo Zuri Hybrid (which feels and breaks more like 7-8# line).

fishing user avatarPitchinJigz reply :

15lb Daiwa J-Braid - 8lb Sunline FC Sniper

I got a 15 pound spool of Powerpro Slick and a 16 pound spool of Sunline SX1. Gonna tie each to 7lb Sunline Sniper FC.

This is exactly what I do.

fishing user avatarEvan K reply :

6 lb. P-Line Fluoroclear copoly. Works just fine but probably going to replace that with braid+fluoro leader next winter for the extra sensitivity.

Super slick is okay...SX1 is a great line (used both). And you can't go wrong with Sniper.

Well it sounds like you're helping me figure out which one is better.

Yeah, I enjoyed using SX1 quite a bit.

Since I only drop shot off-shore for smallmouth, the line I use is 6# test Fireline Crystal, with a 6# test fluorocarbon leader. Have caught some pretty big smallies with this rig over many seasons now. Haven't lost many and none due to line failure. Very reliable combination in my opinion.

I absolutely HATE PowerPro. Makes way too much "noise" through the guides, when reeling in your bait or a fish. Besides, I don't need 10# test anything to land a fish in open water and that's about the lightest pound test they offer. JMO. :)

Wow 6# test! Are you using a size 1000 reel or are you using a 600 yard spool to fill your size 2500 reel 1/4 of the way? ;)
