What type of rods, reels and line do you guys like for fishing Flukes?
I like a 7-7 ft 3 in fast action med-mh power rod, 6.8-7:1 reel, and 12-16 lb mono. Btw welcome to the forum.
Thanks for the advice and I can't wait to use this. Seems like some great people are on here!
I use everything from a Conquest 50/MBR782, Conquest 50/NRX802, Conquest 50/MBR783, Antares AR/MBR843, Antares HG/MBR843 and a mix of FC or braid but from now on, it's all braid.
Mh/fast casting rod with a soft tip, 30lb power pro 15lb fluorocarbon leader any reel capable of casting a weightless fluke or caffeine shad, d shad etc. I use a 4/0 - 5/0 Gama Ewg hook for 5'' soft jerkbaits
Thanks that helps a lot. I love fishing flukes and now I know what the best set-up is.

7 foot medium heavy open faced spinning real and rod, A bait caster simply won't give you the correct action and will wear you out

I used to use spinning gear for flukes, and I still do sometimes, but I definitely prefer casting. Longer, more accurate casts are a plus. Also I've gotten used to casting.
I fish windy Southern Illinois strip pits. Your not going to throw flukes on a bait-caster unless you just get kicks out of constant backlashes.
The configuration of the bait-cast rod w/ eyes above the rod (for some reason) doesn't lend itself to jerking around a fluke. Even on dead calm days.
I throw them on my jerk bait rod...a Loomis TWR802 with a chronarch 50 and 10lb flouro...the NRX 853 also fishes them well.

I use casting gear all the time on windy days and I have no problem with little jerks, drags, tugs, pulls etc using casting gear. This little guy fell to a Bluegill Flash Fluke.
Your casting non weighted flukes into the wind on a bait-caster? Your more talented than i am. Much easier to grab the correct tool for the job though.

A Super Fluke is a pretty heavy and dense bait. I'm not saying that I am out there casting into a 30mph headwind, but if it's not to windy to fish, I am using casting gear and I don't even own any spinning gear for bass so I always use casting gear.
I have throw smaller flukes on 2 different outfits. A 6'10" MF Fenwick Smallmouth with Curado 51E and a Daiwa V.I.P. 6'9" MF with Ambassadeur 1600C. I did manage one backlash with the 1600c when I tried for the other side of the lake throwing into wind strong enough to make whitecaps. The 51E is a little easier to backlash in wind if not careful. Really wouldn't want to throw these small ones on a MH rod. I won't disagree that a spinning rod might be a tad easier in wind. I'm kind of like John except I do have a few spinning combos, I just seldom use one cuz I prefer baitcast reels.

^^ Nice combo! And fish.
I hook up better w/ spinning reel set up too. Kinda like not setting the hook when you hear a bass bust a spinnerbait/ but waiting until you feel the weight of the fish.

Thank you!
A little bit about this catch.......I thought that he was going to die because he was bleeding and he had the hook in his gullet. I had to cut the line and reach up through his gills and rotate the hook downward and push it out. It only pushed out without a fuss because I ALWAYS smash the barb down on my T-Rigged hooks with a pair of pliers. I pushed the hook out and held him in the water for about 8-10 seconds and he swam off with no issues.
I use pistol grips med fast action.Longer rods hamper the twitch.like i say if you aint using a pistol grip with topwaters and flukes you aint gettin the full monty out of them lures
Wish i could post my big bass from weekend before last. Says it too big to upload. 8+ lb female, LLLLLLLLLLOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG fish. 10lb line, it was a hoot!
I can email it to you'z guys if'n you wanna see her.
John if you post the pics i sent you, the fellar in the one picture with the camo ball cap is Cottny 27 thats a member here. I let him fish with me (blah ha ha)
I use a 6'10"-7' Medium-fast spinning rod w/8lb fluoro. I prefer to fish my flukes weightless.

I tried adding a weight while at the river for 2 reasons, 1) to get it down quicker, and 2) to use it on a MH rod. I didn't like the added weight.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm trying to soak up all the info I can about flukes so I can master them and get more hook ups.
Try a scrounger head, i dont like weighting the fluke, but a scrounger head long bill gives it beautiful fluttering action
If you find yourself jerking too early on the hook up in clear water.. Experiment with looking away from the lure after it lands.. At least until you stop quickly jerking the lure away from the approaching bass.On 11/16/2014 at 11:20 AM, Green Trout said:Thanks so much for the feedback. As time goes on you will get to where in clear water you will be almost 100% sight fishing, not casting at fish, BUT MONITORING YOUR FLUKE IS STILL VISIBLE, if not, set the hook!

That has to be a lot of fun! But the water I fish in is about 2ft clear so I don't do any sight fishing. Just curious, what do you like about EWG hooks vs Offset?
Im guessing the last hook question was for me..
The seemingly tiny hooks i use do a number of things very well.
1) almost like its not there, for weeds/ doesnt alter the natural balance of the weightless fluke
2) its smaller, so it makes engulfing the fluke at all kinds of odd angles much easier for the bass
What does a bass do after it captures its prey? (It crushes it with its teeth etc in its throat and inside gill plates etc) This is why the small hook is still so effective on this lure.
I get a lot of fish hooked in the top of the roof of the mouth. Very rare to have a gut hook, i was scared of that at first but its been a non issue.
I do re- tie after every fish due to the top of the roof of the mouth hook ups/ makes the line ride against fish's teeth on the fight.

Its the best part! Seeing the fish come up and strike your fluke violently while you're jerking it is awesome.
I use a 7' medium power fast action avid casting rod. 12 pound invizx.
I don't get why people would think you can't cast a fluke with casting gear. Just because you're not using a weighted hook doesn't mean it's actually "unweighted". I've never had an issue casting a fluke with casting gear, in fact i think they cast easily. Now when I say fluke I mean the super fluke. The original fluke would probably be really tricky with casting gear.
I like to fish super flukes on a owner twist lock hook, unweighted or weighted if i want to get them deeper. I like the screw lock on those hooks with the centering pin. It's easy to screw in and doesn't tear the nose of the fluke up as quickly as an offset hook.
Bubblegum for pre spawn, pearl for the rest of the year.
The loooong cast past a point/ its just a little too far out to see DOWN at your lure, but, jerk/ jerk/ jerk approaching the point and the water JUST BOILS UP/ meanwhile your drags singing and you never set the hook,
Yeah, good times

My brother-in-law (living in Florida) won't fish a big plastic such as a super fluke or Big EZ-Swimmer because he feels hook-up ratio is too poor with all that plastic in the way. Is he setting the hook too soon, maybe? He uses 5/0 hooks. I tried a Big EZ Swimmer there this year for the first time. Bad time of the year. Were catching only 1 to 1-1/2 lbers. Lost one myself on a Big EZ. He didn't hesitate to point out (again) why he won't fish such lures. On the other hand, I would love to fish with them if I could start hooking up.
Sounds like he's not fishing an exposed hook.
I am penetrating the fluke head from the bottom up roughly 1/4" from the tip of the nose. Fully exposed hook.
I used to miss fish often with any other hook presentation.
With an exposed hook, the hook is exposed, LOL.. No plastic to have to press through.
Not positive, but imagine he set the hook like I did. Approximately 1/4" through nose, then back up from the bottom with the point resting in the channel to make it weedless.
I honestly dont really "set" the hook with the nothing rig i'm describing. Raise rod tip and reel, heck most times the bass has itself hooked before i have done anything.
Try it, its killer

This is the beautiful bass that Intex Raft Bum is talking about.
Caught on a Scrounger Head w/10# line in heavy timber w/a spinning reel.

What hooks are you using?
Same rods that I toss senkos/etc. on
Spinning: 6'9" M/XF Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth/Pflueger Purist 1330 spooled with 10lb Power pro braid, and I'll use anywhere from an 8-12 lb fluoro leader if needed.
Casting: 6'9" MH/F Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth/Daiwa Lexa 100SHL, spooled with 30lb Power pro braid, and I'll use 12-20lb fluoro leaders on that.
For weightless plastics, including flukes, I use a 7' MF spinning rod.
Specifically: St. Croix LES70MF/ Stella 2500FB/ #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid
and Gamakatsu 3/0 or 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks (thin wire).
In the photo- Scrounger head long bill, cant remember weight of head though. (The one just lighter than the 1/2 oz if i recall)On 11/16/2014 at 9:32 PM, new2BC4bass said:What hooks are you using?
Fluking and Senko wacky rigging in general, 2/0 Gam or BPS octopus hooks.
Thanks for posting my bass pic John, i dont know why my device wont let me do it.
