Powell Max or G-Blanks 2024

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I'm looking for a med power casting rod to use with light texas rigs, weightless worms, shaky heads and other lighter tackle applications.  I pretty much had my mind set on the Powell 702cef but have been reading good reviews on the G-Blanks rods.  I would probably go with a 7' med/fast.  I'm sure I can't go wrong either way but was wondering if anyone had any opinions or preference on these two rods.

I also wanted to thank everyone for the wealth of information you all share on this site.  I haven't really posted here before but visit daily.  I have been fishing for 25+ years but I have learned alot of valuable information and new ideas from many of the posts here.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

you will not be dissapointed if you go with a G-BLANKS rod !!!! plus you can customize it how you want (split grips , colored thread , hook keepers , etc..)  give Larry a call and talk to him about what your looking for , im sure he can hook you up :(

fishing user avatarArcticCat500 reply :

pgersumky is correct, you WILL NOT be dissappointed with a GBlanks rod, I own 2 and will buy more, although I can not comment on the Powells I've read good things.

But like mentioned the GBlanks is fully custom and can be made to order. Well worth thier price.

fishing user avatarBayou Bass reply :

I use the Powell 703C for senkos, light jigs, and light t-rigs.  I could not be happier with this rod.  This rod has a great tip and I can fling the lightest baits a mile.  I have never tried the G-Blanks rods, but I think you can't go wrong with either rod.

Those G-Blanks are pretty sweet. :(

But so are Powells.... :-?

Flip a coin... 8-)

fishing user avatarChris W reply :

Both are good rods I own both, It just comes down to do you want a production rod now or would you rather wait for a custom.  You cannot make a wrong choice either way.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Thanks for the input!  I guess I will flip a coin :(

fishing user avatarFishDontLikeMe1301600221 reply :

X2

can't speak to the G-Blanks, but fishing 5 Powell's and no complaints.

fishing user avatarArcticCat500 reply :

like I said, I've never fished a Powell, but I cant tell you how many times I almost pulled the trigger on one over at ***.

But I certinally wouldnt flip a coin on a fishing rod. Call Larry, talk to him, give him your budget, tell him you heard about GBlanks here on BR.

I use a Powell 702 for Wacky Senkos, Shaky Heads, and Texas Rigs. It works great for these too...with the warranty you HAVE the rod for LIFE...

G-Blanks = 1 year warranty

Powell = LIFETIME

That right there should make it a no-brainer :(

False

The Rainshadow & Forecast blanks used by GBlanks carry a lifetime warranty, so your blank is covered.  I'll bet no custom builder will offer a lifetime warranty on thier custom rods as well.

Call Larry and talk to him. Make your own decission.

Phone: 918-341-4523

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

I have a powell 683c and wouldn't trade it for any other medium application rod.  (It is rated for MH but it feels and operates more like a medium, all the powell rods I have handled felt like they are overrated)

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

I have a powell 705c and really like the rod, worth every penny and even more.  Extremely light and sensitive.

That being said, I have been looking around for a rod to match my Daiwa Alphas 103.  I was looking at getting a purple rod, mojo perhaps, but have decided to give G-Blanks a try.  I have talked with Larry and am thinking about ordering a 7'M rod, all black with purple accent thread....

sorry, didn't mean to ramble or hijack the thread

This is true, but unfortunately i just snapped my powell....on a hookset actually.  Using the warranty is not the easiest.  You have to prove your the original owner and its not near the ease as St. Croix that is my only con i have found with the powell rods....and the break on a hookset...but still a great rod for the money

Get some purple winding checks....Matagi makes some sweet checks at about $5 a piece.  You could order them and have them sent to Larry's place.

There is NO WAY this is true! I have returned many rods to Keith and he has yet to ask for proof of original ownership! He even waived the first ones fees! And if you managed to break a Powell on a hook set than it must have been an immovable object!

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I'm normally not crazy about buying a rod sight unseen but I don't know of anyone in the Dallas area that carries Powells, however I think I am going to go ahead and order one from Tackle Warehouse.  You guys have confirmed my impression that it is a great rod for the money.  I will definitely put G-Blanks on my list of rods to get in the future.  Thanks!!

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

i don't see why your so set on a Powell then if you have never held one to me they are not all that special . if i were you i'd checkout Kistlers 7'medium crackbait rod (alton jones mode) .. btw , G-BLANKS also has a 7'6'' cranbait rod that is VERY NICE !!!! , soon as i get up some more money i am gonna have Larry hook me up !!!!  :(

to each his own...maybe to some of use the g-blanks arnt all that special :D  but i do agree with you on kistler!!! a powell warranty is one of the easiest in the fishing buis. what other company president will pick up the phone and talk to you personly when you have a problem or your equipment just broke??? not to many these days, the man behind powell does though.to me that right there shows something imo, just my $.02

fishing user avatarArcticCat500 reply :

like I said I cant speak for the Powell, but dollar for dollar you'll have a hard time beating out a GBlanks rod. Or a quality rod built on a quality blank from any builder.  I use to be avid in the surf and all my surfcasters were custom, theres just somthing about a custom rod being built for you to your specifications, other then some rod built in a factory by a 12yr ol kid. Huh, go figure, I'll take the guy who's been building rods long before half the people that work in these places have been born...Go GBlanks you wont regret it.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

That's actually a very good question, I'm not sure why I'm so set on a Powell.   I've heard nothing but good things about them and they are in my price range.  I think I like the idea of having something that you can't go pick up at Academy, not that that is necessarily a good thing.  Just one of those things that I've had stuck in my head and "have to have." :(

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Obviously you can't go to any retail store and get a G-Blanks rod which is part of the reason I was interested in them.  I do have a Kistler Magnesium which I love.  Just wanted something different.

fishing user avatarArcticCat500 reply :

once you hold that GBlanks and knowing it was made for you and not to sit on some rack for everyone to finger print you'll be happy you did.

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

Note to self- From now on when I am undecided on a choice between two fishing poles I will ask about each one separate instead of asking people to compare them. That we I will prevent myself from becoming more undecided. LOL

fishing user avatardan1942 reply :

I am actually talking to Larry at Gblanks about a custom rod to go with my New core 51mg.  He seems like a nice guy and price with the better blank and titanium guides comes out the same as the cumara but weighs less. Both have a lifetime warranty

Dan

fishing user avatarArcticCat500 reply :

for whats it worth I've had the chance to fish with the Cumara, I liked the rod.

I found the GBlanks to be more sensitive and yes lighter. I have a friend I fish with who owns some real nice high-end rods, and when on Im his boat, I better not lay that GBlanks rod down, cause he's picking it up.

fishing user avatardan1942 reply :

Yeah I am kinda worried about the durability of the Cumara being that the it is so thinned walled.  Now it will just come down to if I can hold out for 3 weeks for the gblank to be built  :'(

fishing user avatarArcticCat500 reply :

Hey Dan, a buddy just talked to Larry and said maybe 2 weeks. If he has the blank onhand he gets them done in less then 3.

fishing user avatarChris W reply :

The one I just had made he told me 4 weeks but had it done in 3 weeks, don't you love it when you get one sooner. Great rod too by the way and I have owned them all presently I have 11 Glx's 3 Imx's 2 Kistler Helium LTX II, 4 Falcon Expert series, 3 Falcon Lowriders, and 1 Powell Frog Rod, the G Blanks is build every bit as good if not better than all of these. I am sure that this will not be my last G Blanks

fishing user avatardan1942 reply :

Good stuff!! I will talk to him more today

Dan

fishing user avatarsenko_77 reply :

Go with the Powell.  They are the best rods under $200 IMO.  I haven't had a single problem and the only time I ever returned one was because I broke it in the car and they took it no questions asked.

Theres no actual truth to that statement, I'm not picking on you Senko77 but theres just waaaaay to many good rods under $200.

Have you had the chance to fish a Rainshadow blank? The RX8 is under $200 and I'll put it up against any rod in that price range.

I have used an Rx8+ and it is no better than a Powell IMO. And it is way more than $200 too. Atleast it was when i dealt with them! I agree that Powell is indeed the best rod in it's range hands down!!!

Just nobody tell my wife how much I have invested in all of these.

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

What blanks is gblanks using?  Im sure his labor has got to be at least $100 per rod so that means he must be using a $100 blank.  How is the quality and sensitivity of a $100 blank?

No offense but can't you really buy a sub $200 off the rack rod that is just as good?

fishing user avatarMatt Jungblut reply :

i have owned imx, avid,cumura,ltx2.gold carrot, and i have owned 4 g-blanks

well i own 3 right now and of all the rods i have or had the only 1s better then my g-blank is my imx's

fishing user avatarStagerlee reply :

I love my Powell.

fishing user avatarMSU Fish reply :

Wow a lot of good things said about g-blanks.  I myself have debated about powells or g-blanks....I think you guys just talked me into my next rod being a g-blanks rod.

Thanks!!!!

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

seems like the powell guys should fish powells and the guys that have had G-BLANKS make them a custom rod should fish them . i love my 2 swimbait rods that have Rainshadow blanks and are made by G-BLANKS. never fished a powell but am sure they are good , thankyou for every one putting these rods and their reveiws posted for other people to know about them . it is good to have options !!!!!!!  8-)

fishing user avatarmadfish reply :

Wow, I just ordered a G-blanks rod, he said it would be done in 2 weeks. Hopefully it will come sooner. I have never fished a Powell. Being a proud and happy owner of a Carrot Stick and planing to buy more. I would say toss the G-Blanks and Powell choices out and go with a Carrot Stick!

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

I just talked to Larry at G-blanks and he says he can make me a rod I will like better than my loomis GLX rods for $200.  He is checking on a grip that I like and if he can do it I think Im going to give it a try.

Wont be the first time I gambled $200 and if its a nice rod I will save over $100 compared to another GLX.

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

Good call on the Powell

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

I just placed an order with Larry Mitchell at G-Blanks for a custom rod per these specs:

6' Medium Heavy Casting Rod

Shikari Blank

Split Foam Grip (like Steez)

Split style reel seat

H-Ring ringlocks guides

NO Logo or Markings

$150 + $20 shipping

Completion and Delivery in 3 to 4 weeks.

I will post a comparison review (to my Steez and Loomis GLX) as soon as I get the rod.

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

Well Larry Mitchell at G-Blanks told me, " you will like our rod with the Shikari (or Rainshadow) even better than your Steez or GLX rods".

So I decided to throw $150 at G-Blanks just to find out first hand for myself if there rods were up to snuff. Won't be the first $150 Ive ever thrown away.

Don't worry, if it ain't as great as they claim I will will trash it and let everyone know how bad it feels.

If I don't love it then it will be posted forsale for the price I paid plus shipping.

BTW, I just bought another GLX on ebay for $245 (along with another  core 50 for $325) and I'll keep buying GLX's until someone produces something better.
