BR members,
Robert and I would like to announce that we are now selling ABEC-7 hybrid spool bearings on our website.
Hawgtech spool bearings
I've been testing these bearings for months and they really make a big difference in my fishing. I can cast baits farther and with less effort. Pitching/flipping distances are improved also.
Check out the video below...simply by changing bearings the free spool time in a Curado200E7 increases by more than 5X.
We are introducing the 3 X 10 X 4 bearings, first. This is easily the most popular size spool bearing out there and is found in many popular bait cast reels (Chronarch/Curado/Quantum Smoke/Lews SS/ Abu Revo/etc...)
We are selling these bearings for $8/each ($16pair) with an automatic 10% discount on purchases of ten or more bearings. Our overhead is extremely low and we buy bearings by the thousands...so we can pass our low prices on to you. Robert and I would like to extend a 15% discount to the first 20 BR members who purchase these bearings. Just use coupon code BRG15 at checkout when ordering on the website.
Thanks!
Mike

Very impressive Mike. That is a dramatic difference.
That's Awesome indeed. When might those colored anodized nut retainers become available for purchase as an option with the purchased handle?
Any plans for a bent carbon fiber handle???

Hogsticker,
We have been making and selling the colored anodized handles/retainers/end caps for a couple months. I have not yet updated the website to provide automatic purchasing of the colored anodized stuff. Still testing the waters a little bit trying to gauge demand on these items.
Anyone interested in red/blue/gold anodized nut retainers or end caps, just send me an email at support@hawgtech.com

TNBassin,
Actually, yes. See enclosure, it shows a rendering of a design I've been working on.
This is still a work-in-progress. Our plan is to start making some swept handles in a couple months.

Awesome. Are you gonna make them so we can use Shimano grips on them, or Abu etc?

Yes, our current handle and the swept version will both accept the Shimano Septon "Power Grip" knobs.
Great. Keep that center cap on there black and you've sold one already.

Dwight lets put some on your reel when you come down and see if I can spool it with 8lb diameter braid.
i received mine today and put one set into my lew's team pro and another set into my lew's BB1. i made the mistake of putting a drop of oil into each bearing before testing it. still, on my team lew's pro, freespool went from 11 seconds to 16 seconds. on my BB1, freespool went from an abysmal 8 seconds to 26 seconds!
21farms,
Yes....if you put a little oil on these hybrid bearings you will see some improvement, as you have noted. If you run them dry, you will see an even bigger improvement.
Unlike Stainless Steel bearings, you can run ceramic bearings dry. They DO get a little bit noisier when you run them dry. Our bearings are quieter than most when run dry, though, as they have nylon cages instead of steel.

That sounds like a plan.

yeah, i saw that the second time i watched the video which was after i already oiled them. unfortunately for me, the first time i watched it, i had the volume turned off since my son was sleeping in the room next door so missed the advice about oil vs. no oil. regardless, the improvement in the BB1 was amazing.
Shipping will cost me $28 per order to Canada via USPS Priority Mail. I would like to purchase 10 bearings to save 20% on my order, any chance you can ship with a cheaper method like in a letter envelope First Class International? It'll only cost like $4, but no tracking.

TrippyJai,
Sure, I will ship USPS first class to you. Just send me a note at support@hawgtech.com and I will send you an invoice which has the appropriate discounts applied.

In the video it shows u changing 2 bearings. With my Gen3 Revo Winches there is also a bearing on the spool shaft does that need to be changed out aswell?
I have a dumb question. I just got my new Pinnacle Optimus LTE 7:3:1 reel and was considering purchasing these ceramic bearings. However, I cannot figure out what size bearings the reel has. I've looked in the manual and cannot find it and haven't found it through google either. Does anyone know how to figure this out?
Flucobaseball,
Give me a day or two and I will check what size the spool bearings are in that Pinnacle Optimus reel.
Mike
Thanks man. I appreciate that.
Was interested in a set or two for the abu STX [gen. 2] reels but did not see them listed in the charts for abus? only shows "non-revo" models?

Actually in reels like the Revo and Daiwas the bearing under the cast control is taken out of the equation by the full floating spool design. It is just there to support the pinion shaft during retrieve. On these models you replace the brake side bearing and the one on the spool. This will require a special tool to remove the spool shaft pin.
Flucobaseball,
I got my hands on a Pinnacle Optimus LTE tonight. The brake side bearing is 3X10X4- the same size as I am selling. The handle side however is 3X8X4. I d o not have that size...sorry.
On the bright side though, It appears you have a nice little reel. I put a red Hawg Handle on it for some picture and I'm liking it...the red accents match perfectly. The 7.3 gear ratio is pretty sweet and I like the flipping switch on it. I would like to try this reel out some day.
I appreciate you doing this for me. So the important question now is whether it's worthless to change only one side right now or would there still be some benefit in doing this? That is a good looking handle. I may have to try one out eventually.
Fluco,
I would recommend replacing both.
Okay thank you. I will get the one from you since you have been so helpful and search for the other somewhere else.

POPRG,
Sorry for the delay....I finally got my hands on a revo SX tonight.
The side cover bearing is 3 X 10 X 4 (which I carry) and the spool bearing is 5 X 11 X 4 (which I do not carry). You would want to replace both these bearings to get the desired performance improvement. As Mike (DVT) mentioned, there is a third bearing on the pinion shaft, under the cast control...this bearing is also 3X10X4 and apparently does not come into play in freespool.
I know you have a STX, and while I am not 100% certain that the bearing sizes are the same as this SX, I am quite certain that the spool bearing on the STX will not be the 3X10X4 size that I carry right now.
Cool Video. Interesting to see the improvements from start to finish. As pointed out, a little oil will slow down the free-spool times. This is important for those who may be worried about controlling their casts or about the noise-made. My ceramic hybrids Abec 9's aren't loud or a nuisance at all. These bearings really help to achieve similar distances with less effort. Also, start up speed is less allowing lighter baits to cast. Great to see a respected company giving the marketplace more competition. It's great for us consumers.
even though my lew's also have a bearing on the spool shaft that i wasn't able to change yet, i still think it's worthwhile to change the bearings in the sideplate and under the cast control knob. i saw a significant increase in free spool on my BB1. eventually, i'm going to order the boca spool pin pliers and change out the spool bearings too.

Sharp looking reel! Almost like a "poormans" pixy. Would match up with a dobyns savy series rod to a "T".
BR members,
Robert and I would like to let you know that we are now selling the 5 X 11 X 4 spool bearings. This is typically the larger bearing found on many bait cast reels utilizing the three spool bearing design (Lews, Quantum, Revo, etc..). With this and the 3 X 10 X 4 we have been selling, we can now accomodate a good number of the baitcast reels out there. All of our bearings are ABEC7 tolerance with stainless steel races, ceramic bearings and nylon cages.
One question I get a lot is...how are our bearings different than Boca Bearings. The construction is very similar, except our bearings have a nylon cage versus a steel cage. My professional opinion is that the nylon cage is better suited for fishing reel applications for two reasons. 1.) the nylon cage is lighter. The main point of buying ceramic hybrid bearings in the first place is that the ceramic ball bearing is lighter and offers less inertial resistance to motion. It makes sense that you would want the cage lighter as it also is subject to those inertial effects. 2.) The second main benefit of ceramic hybrid bearings is the ability to run them dry. If you run your bearings dry, the nylon cage material runs quieter against the bearings.
I think you can see both of these effects from the video I put up at the start of this thread. Our bearings have outstanding spin characteristics and are relatively quiet.
I invite you guys to give our bearings a try. I think you are going to find that the performance is every bit what you were getting elsewhere and at a much lower cost. We sell our bearings for $8 each, with volume pricing available. Send me an email at support@hawgtech.com if you have further questions or would like to order some.
Thanks,
Mike
Sound's like a good product with good thought behind it. Quieter, cheaper, and lighter catches my attention. I may be picking up a few in the off season for a few reels. Thanks for the update!
this is quite interesting.......... I have abec7 in most of my reels. looks like I need to buy a few more reels so I can try these.
If you add a 3X8X4 to the 5X11X4 you will have a set that will fit most Daiwa baitcasters, and I will be very interested. I've been dead set against ceramic bearings since I purchased a set early in the game.
I believe my reels should be seen and NOT heard, so I've been installing stainless ABEC 7's in my reels, and in some of my friends reels.
Let me know when you have the Daiwa sizes in stock and I will buy one set to try. If they are as quiet as described, I will buy more.
I bought 2 of the 3x10x4 for my lew's tourney pro. Should I put one in the side plate, and one underneath the cast control knob?

ghoti,
Will do! You can see from my video at the beginning of this thread how much noise these bearings make when run dry. They make a slight amount of noise when run dry but better than other hybrid bearings I have tried. If you had a little oil they hush up, but you lose some freespool.
The 3X8X4 bearing is the very next thing in our queue. It is a considerable capital investment to bring a new bearing to market, so we have been somewhat conservative in introducing new ones. But the 3X8X4 is going to happen.

If you have time, let me know when a Daiwa set is available. I willing to give "em a shot, despite my distaste for other ceramic bearings.
if I buy a set of the 3x10x4 where should I bet them at on my abu 5600c4?
catch anything,
The 3X10X4s will fit on your abu 5600.
oh ok but would I use those in place of the ones inside the spool?
Catch Anything,
I sent you a message.
Mike
For those of you concerned with reel noise, I could not stand my Boca Bearings due to noise and quickly went back to stock bearings on my Curado, our bearings are much quieter.

I just got two of the 3x10x4's and put them in my lew's tourney pro a few minutes ago. I have not cast with them yet, but during the free spool, it is not much louder than the stock lew's bearings and I am running them dry. The reel free spools more than 3x longer than before which was about 5-6 seconds. Also, reeling it is so much smoother its amazing. Reeling it is pretty much effortless. Can't wait to cast it!

Make sure you get all you reel adjustment right and don't muscle the cast at all, believe me I almost ruined an entire spool of fresh braid trying spool it on the first cast, lol.
