Nice Spinning Reels? 2025

fishing user avatarxxmurrxx reply :

What are some nice modern spinning reels?

I have a Diawa Tierra which i love, looking for something similar (or as good) without killing the bank.

Looking to replace an old Shimano Sedona that is getting a little rough.

I'v been looking at the Shimano Stradic ci4+ but thats up there in price, anything a little cheaper I should look at?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

The pflueger spinning reels are a good bang for the buck. Supreme & Supreme XT have some nice features. I may experiment with a Pinnacle Optimus or Okuma RTX or Helios. The Daiwa Lexa spinner has some good features ad goes for $120. There's a lot to pick from in the $100-$150 range.

fishing user avatarS Hovanec reply :

Hard to beat the Stradic FJ.  If you look hard enough, you might be able to find some of the original discontinued CI4's for a discount too.  On the lower end of the spectrum, the Sahara is a pretty nice reel.  I have a couple of the older ones on my panfish rods.

fishing user avatartimsford reply :

The pfleugers are nice reels for the price and have a great following on here. I personally dont use them because they dont have enough line capacity for me. Ive been very impressed by the lews tournament high speed spin and team gold spinning reels. The tournament weighs around 8 ounces in the 300 size and is very smooth and a great reel for under 100 dollars. The team gold is probably my favorite spinning reel ive ever tried. It weighs just a hair over 7 ounces in the 300 size and is super smooth. Has a carbon frame like the ci4 and okuma rtx which had me worried at first because i like to fish for stripers, but ive never felt any frame flex no matter how hard the fight and it holds 140 yards of 10 lb mono which is a big plus fighting larger fish. I think you would be very happy with either

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I can speak for the Lexa 2000 and Stradic

reels. Both are excellent quality reels and

worth the prices, respectively.

Both can be had for less on auction sites.

You definitely want to test each reel in your

hands at a store if you can. By each I mean

any and all suggestions you get which appeal

to you.

I say this because I was convinced I wanted

a Pfleuger due to all the fantastic reviews I

read. But once I got my hands on them I didn't

like how they felt. They are fine reels by all

accounts, but they just didn't do it for me.

I liked the feel of Shimano reels the best.

Point is our opinions are just that. To make

an educated decision go hands on. Only then

will you find something YOU like.

fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

I would definitely consider the new Daiwa Ballistic ex. I don't own one (yet) but I've heard great stuff about it! Check out the reviews at TW.

Read the new symetres are not great compared to what they used to be, you talking the new version? Maybe I just read some bad reviews.

fishing user avatarDjf3864 reply :

The Quantum Smoke has been good to me.

fishing user avatarFunkJishing reply :

I have a 8bb shakespere agility spinning reel, its super smooth and is built to last. Great reel http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Fishing-Reels-NEW-SHAKESPEARE-AGILITY-AGL840-8BB-SPIN-REEL-/380954595362#ht_732wt_1118 here's one on ebay, if you can find it anywhere else that works too but i highly recommend it. wont break the bank either.

fishing user avatarMike2841 reply :

I like the pflueger supreme xt in the 30 size.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Saros..

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

I have an okuma rtx 25 and it's a sweet reel for $70. Super light and the drag is smooth. I replaced an okuma trio 30 that I used for many years. That reel is still in use today too.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

Prob not what anyone cares to hear about, but last weekend after fouling or breaking off two spinning rigs, I picked up a Sienna which I often take along, but don't use all too often anymore.  And it was a joy.  I've had it for years and it is still as smooth, quiet and comfortable as my Symetre, President, etc.  It doesn't get as much use and won't last forever, but it is one of the best $30 purchases I've ever made.

fishing user avatarbassin is addicting reply :

Pflueger....Supreme XT...they have never failed me..

the President is an awesome value too. imo

fishing user avatarAK-Jax86 reply :

I have a Pflueger Patriarch $200, Quantum Smoke $160, Abu Garcia Orra SX $100 love them all. I don't use my spinning reels much anymore but the Smoke is my favorite followed by the Patriarch. The Orra will always have a special place because that was the first reel I got when I moved to FLORIDA and caught tons of quality fish with that thing.

Agreed on the President reel I had one of them as well loved it til I broke it on a fish

fishing user avatarOntarioFishingGuy reply :

Try to find one of the old model Daiwa Ballistic SH spinning reels.

fishing user avatargramps50 reply :

I have both Pflueger Presidents and Purist both are very nice reels. The Purist has a little better drag, both are really smooth. Last time I checked Dunn's Sporting Goods had the Presidents on sale for $48.

The new symetre has one of the main gear bearings replaced with a plastic bushing. Shimano supposedly "upgraded" them with xship, yet at the same time downgrade them with a bushing where a bearing used to be and a composite frame. Why not just keep the bearing? I bought one and sold it after using it twice.

That is because they changed the design to a more compact one making them knuckle busters

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

I'd personally chose the CI4+ but for a lower price point I would check out the Lew's Team Gold Carbon

fishing user avatarSJex reply :

I agree with Tom. I went to my local tackle store to buy a Symetre for my new ultralight setup. Walked out with the Ci4+ instead. Haven't regretted that purchase one bit.

I bought a Symetre two summers ago and love it.  I was thinking of buying a new one.  But now it's getting bad reviews because of the supposedly upgrades?  My current Symetre is built solid and works great.

fishing user avatardesmobob reply :

I never see a lot of love for the Daiwa Tournament SS, but I have one of these and it has been totally reliable despite taking a severe beating by some big stripers and bluefish in the salt water.  And the reel is the little 1300 size!  The drag is smooth and strong and the reel just keeps going and going and....

It's not the smoothest, doesn't have the most bearings, but it is rock solid and dependable.  The other reel I have in that price range (~$100) is the older model Shimano Aero Symetre.  It has a much more "refined" and smooth feel to it, but I don't know if it could have handled what the little Daiwa has dealt with.  In any event, it's an absolute pleasure to use and has served me for many years.

I've been so pleased with these reels, I never was compelled to try reels in the higher price ranges.  I never used to do much spin fishing though, and I spent my reel money on fly reels for most of my fishing years.

Tight lines,

Bob

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Pflueger hands down.

So which model do you have? I'm talking about the current model available the fl. I gave it a bad review because it was no where near the quality of the my symetre fjs. Rough gears, flex in the frame, plus i couldn't hold it comfortably because shimano decided to design it for someone with hands the size of a 8 year old kid.

fishing user avataradam32 reply :

To the o.p. my recommendation would be to look for another new daiwa tierra. I haven't been really happy with any spinning reel since daiwa discontinued the tierra, advantage, and sol. And I've bought a LOT of spinning reels since those.

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

Pflueger, Pflueger, Pflueger.

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

Cabelas has Supreme XT for $120

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Well yea Ci4+.... No question, but OP wants something less expensive as stated.. As such there are a lot of good answers to this.. I like the Saros in 1000 but not above 2500.. To much flex in reel stem.. Try a president & save for a ci4+, lol

How long as the newly designed Symetre FL been out?  Like I said, I bought mine in mid-summer 2013.  Maybe it was the 2012 model, I don't know.  I do know its black, cost me around $100.00 and has been working very good for me.
