I need a spinning reel that I can cast 200 lb test braided line easily and can make long casts with a 3 ounce weight. This reel needs to have strong enough gears and a smooth drag to hold up to a 500 lb alligator.
I cannot be real big either if it will hold close to 200 yards of line would be great . I need to have it somewhat balanced on an 8 ft heavy action rod.
Any suggestions would be helpful

My suggestion: see a shrink you're nuts fishing for alligators! LOL

Wow.
Dude you need a cane pole.
Well I am trying to be serious . Its my job to catch them. I just have been going through reels and need to invest in one thats castable but has strong gears and if possible a high gear ratio
I reeled this one in a few weeks ago and he was hooked in the tail
DUDE THAT IS INTENSE!
and i thought i was intense for frog fishin...
u should make a tv show about gator fishin...heck i'd watch it
If you are serious, the Stradic 6000's are on clearance at my local Cabelas for $110. Normally close to $200. Holds 165yds of 12lb mono, or the same amount of 40lb braid.
That is asking quite a bit of a spinning reel.
I was thinking a shark rod or maybe a gun! ;-)
Beleive it or not I caught that big gator on this reel

I am unsure of the year of the reel but its strong geared . I tightened the drag too tight on an 8 footer and the mount on the reel snapped. I wish I could fix that mounting part of that old reel. But I need a new strong one
I heard Penns are good I never have tried one
my buddies and i do the same thing in gator season. i have a PENN spinning reel thats works good. dont know the exact model but its a biggun. here's a pic of our gator -10'2''

I might check them out this braid is Tuff Line 200 lb test . I beleive the diameter is same as 50 lb mono. I need atleast 200 lb test if they roll in the line they can cut 200 lb test with their scutes sometimes
Hey Alger im not trying to be nosy but is One of your friends named Jerry?
I might have to try a penn . do they come with a lifetime or any kind of guarantee.
dont know bout the guarantee. and naw dont know a jerry
I would look into salt water reels if I were you.
Here you go!
It'll cost you, but the Shimano Stella has one of the stongest drags in the industry.
If money is no object, and you want the toughest reel around, check out these.
http://www.vanstaal.com/
Shimano stella 20000FA, Daiwa saltiga 6500 and the Van staal if you can spend about $600.
These reels have landed big marlins and huge tunas, it will pull the aligators like nothing! You will need a popping rod rated to 250g!
A cheaper reel up to the standard is the okuma vs 80 or the penn 750ss!
Holly mackrell !!!!!
What about a Penn Senator Level Wide, Maybe 4/0 or 6/0.
Just a suggestion. For alot more money you could try a Penn International Torque. It has level drag as well. I am not sure how they cast. But it might be worth a shot. For a spinning reel maybe a Penn 8500 or 9500. These reels hold a ton of line and you can find them on Ebay reasonably priced. Just another thought.

Money is a bit of an issue I might try a Penn thanks for the ideas
Gator BK,
I beleive that the Penn spinning reels that I linked to sell for around $150 new, the Torgues are real pricey. I see alot of Penns on ebay. Another option that I just thought of, is a Daiwa Black Gold. They sell for aound $99 dollars brand new.

I wonder if Penns come with any kind of guarantee?
You can buy a Penn or any other reel for that matter and pay less. You'll probably end yup replacing it several times.
Get a Van Stall VS 300. Since this is your work and this is equipment, it would be tax deductible.
That is true Redline . I have went through about 4 reels the past couple months. This gator business can be a net loss by the time you figure in gas equiptment etc. The FWC doesnt pay us ,the only money I get is for the gator . That way taxpayers save money on our service. I just got my 1099 last week :'(
witout putting to much thought into it, a reel designed for fishing great white shark may be up to the task. Maybe a Pen Senator in one of its larger sizes under $100.
oops. Just noticed the SPINNING in the title.

I lived in Tampa for a while a saw how many gators have to be removed and man yall should get paid by the tax payers. They are the same folks who want to build developments in swamps and then whine when there little fluffy dog gets eaten when they let it out. You guys do a job that only few would and I never realized that the government doesn't pay yall.
Ok, enough of the rant, I was going to say the Van Stall also, but if price is an issue like others said a big Okuma or Penn. Personally I am a huge Abu Garcia fan and just got one of their new 800 series and they rock, but not sure if they make one big enough for you.

He needs a spinning reel...
Since cranking reels have already been suggested, I figured I'd throw in another viable alternative.
Fin-Nor Offshore spinning: $170 at Cabela's.
