Ok so i just recieved my 70 doller energy PT from monster tackle and i like it alot but i have one little concern... i got the right handed 6.3:1 ratio, and when i turn the handle thee spool doesnt turn, but sometimes it does... theres no line on it and not even on the rod yet...
if anyone can shed some light on this for me itd be great....
Alex
Is the drag tightened?
drag is backed way off(thats the little knob by the crankin handle right?) and the spool control if off as well...
Alex
The drag is the "Star" wheel behing the handle, the reel probably came from the factory with the drag loosened. Tighten the drag and the spool should turn when the handle is turned. The instruction sheet that came with the reel should tell you how to tighten the drag (which direction).
ok so the more i play with it the more it spins....
Alex
If you don't have some drag on the Energy the spool won't spin. Something I've learned when spooling up my 3 Energies.
ok guys thanks for the quick responses... i tightened up the drag (it was all the way off) and she spins nicely... on now i guess the question is, thats that little knob for behind the handle for?
Alex
That's the brake that will control how fast the spool spins. The dial on the other side is for the magnets which allow for more fine tuning. You're gonna wanna set both of those once you get it on a rod. If you're not sure how they work just post up here and we can help you.
thanks guys... i just read the tutorial Davis and it made a little impression on my brain so ill read it a few more times before i start this... plan to go get my rod tomarrow and some line... should i learn with mono or braid... id like to learn with braid since thats what i plan to fish with... but if its btter to start off with mono ill take you guys advice...
Alex
If this is your first baitcaster I'd recommend mono for the simple reason it can be alot cheaper. The only reason I suggest it is if you get an backlash that you can't work out. That way you won't feel bad if you have to cut it out. Probably won't be an issue but just trying to save you from any disappointment.
I forgot to mention taht as far as casting goes I see no difference between braid and mono.

Hmm...
I suspect it will be an issue and that's some very good advice!
8-)
lol will any mono work? like some 12lb cajun line since its rather cheap... lol
And after a long debate with companions and what i liked for my self, this reel is going on an All Star american classic rod 6'6 MH worm rod, AC WR1 model number... not too expensive but not a cheap-o either... plan to go pick it up one day this week...

For the price and amount of line I would go with Berkley Big Game 12lb test. Works pretty good for me. Cabelas brand mono is actually pretty good as well. Don't think I have backlashed once with that mono. Both are cheap for a good amount of line.

yep very first baitcaster.... never even touched one till i got mine VIA ups this morning... lol ive always wanted to learn and i figured id buy one while i could get one for 69.99 and plus its a quantum(only reels ill fish with) so i baught one... plus a few of my friends told me if it didnt work out, theyd buy the combo from me, but im confident ill get it eventually....
Alex
Well if you have any learning problems just do a search around here. There have been posts in the past from people trying to learn. You'll get the hang of it soon enough. There are probably videos out on places like youtube too.
Don't worry about all the people disliking Quantum here lately and saying bad things about the Energy. 90% of those people haven't used a Quantum in many years let alone the Energy. I know this because about a year ago I decided to ask all the members why they seem to dislike Quantum.
Congrats on the new reel. Just a tip (IMHO)... Keep your casting expectations low for your first couple outings. Also, you might want to practice from shore or in a field. It's much easier to untangle a backlash if you have room to backup as you let line out.
I can still cast a bit further with my spinning rod, but I'm getting to be more accurate at distance casting with my BC. Pitching is a whole different story though...
Excellent choice on the Energy PT, you will not be disappointed. One thing though, that dial on the on the non-crank side is not for magnetic brakes. The Energy has the Infinite ACS system, which uses CENTRIFUGAL brakes, not magnetic. This system is easily adjusted and has great fine tuning characteristics. Enjoy your new Quantum.
Good luck on your new setup. Don't get frusterated with the BC, it will be frusterating at first. But will begin to feel natural after a little practice. I can't tell you how many fish I caught digging out a backlash when I first started w/ the BC. I would pick out the backlash and reel up the slack and feel the line swimming away.
thanks guys im sure ill need alittle more guidence... lol and as far as people disliking quantum, well i guess its all preference... ive never used anything but quantums... even baught one of those 3 BB snapshot reels and i cant tell you how many fish i caught with it lol... Quantum is alittle more expensive but you gotta pay for the best...

Reply #11 - Yesterday at 22:26:26* I think that quantum has came along way with their reels but after having two Energy P.T.'s crap out on me I don't think I willl buy another quantum. I will say this though quantum has some excellent customer service and quick turn around time.
Just a comment from another thread that's currently running.
I thought it was interesting that he just went through two
of them.

RW, that is one post in the entire thread. I too am always hesitant when someone posts a bad experience(not just here but at retailer's sites also), but I need more than one person's experience(or the 5 years ago experiences when they were learning to use a baitcaster). Most of the people who bash Quantum here, admit to not using one in several years. I remember a few years back when Abu Garcia's low profiles were better used as paperweights, but now the Revo is hailed to no end(even by those without one). I still find it hard to believe that some of the biggest names in both BASS and FLW use Quantum if they are such crap(or turds as you have stated previously). I am very pleased with all of my Quantums, from the Accurist CX to the Energy PT(7 in all) and most of them are being fished hard at least three days a week without a single issue. I am also very pleased with my Shimano, Abu Garcia, and Daiwa reels, although they don't get used as much as the Quantums.
I deleted my "turds" comment.
The fact is, Quantum reels have a well established
reputation for poor long-term performance. I posted
the most recent comment from someone who has
actually owned a couple recently.
well if it holds up to him using them three times a week hard... then it can handle me using it 4 times a week easily... but i dot know my buddys pflugers cant even come close to my quantums in the spinning world... he had the presidents and ithey are around 70 bucks and i baught my 40 buck array and it doesnt even come close to it... let alone my energy pt spinning reel lol
in the winter i plan to buy another energy spinning reel and a carrot stix for it to go on... ive fell inlove with that orange... LMAO

You don't have the problem of the bail closing prematurely on your spinning reel ? I bought the new improved version last year and it definately has a problem and I will not buy another one.
nope i dont have that problem with either of my quantum reels... i have the $40 array and the $100 KVD series reel from BPS...
ALSO, why does everyone ***** about an ounce of weight on their reels... is it you arent man enough to handle swingin an extra ounce around? Jesus people quit whining about a freakin ounce... honestly can you even tell the difference or are you so anal about it you put them on a scale? you are the people that are turning this sport into somthing so complicated its hard to teach others cause it so f$%^ing complecated.... what happened to the ol do it all zebco 33?
ok im done ranting...
anyhow i baught my rod today, a 7' MH quantum PT rod with the split handle... i was going for the all star rod and he said the quantums were better and had better warrenties... only draw back was all he had today was the heavy power rods that i didnt like the feel of.... so he orderd me one and will be here tuesday or so...
and as for line i baught some sufix siege mono in 12lb test and the "camo" color...
Alex
I posted this earlier on a different thread, but it seemed to apply here as well, so here it goes if you haven't already read it:
I've been pretty partial to Quantums over the past few years. The previous model Energy PTs were the first "high end" reels that I bought when really getting geared up for bass fishing about 4 or 5 years ago. I still have four of them (2 E600PTs, an E650PT, and an E640PT) and aside from the crappy coating on a couple of them that has started to peel off, they're in great shape--still very smooth and long casters, as well as easy to control with the external ACS. The profile fits my hand well and even though they're a little heavier than my Curado 100DSV and Pflueger Summit, I still use them all the time (espectially the 640 with a 4.4:1 Ratio for crankin'). I also have an '07 Accurist AC500PT and two KVD Signature Series Baitcasters (KV600C w/ 5.1:1 and KV600CX w/ 6.2:1) that are basically the same as the Accurist, minus the silver w/ red accents paint job and a couple other minor features, and they are smooth, solid, and palmable reels for their price as well. They also have the flipping switch that comes in handy. Finally, I have a Code CD870CX that I just got a couple months ago. It's my least favorite Quantum so far, which probably follows as I paid the least for it. I don't like the shape as much and the gearing is not as smooth as any of my other reels. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I don't really care for it and will probably be trading it in for a Citica 100 or maybe another Curado 100 (or I might save up for a bit and try the Pflueger Patriarch). But I imagine I'll be holding on the the others for awhile because they've been good, solid reels for me thus far.

Congrats on a good score! If this is your first caster, I highly recommend that you:
1) Use mono - more economical
2) Practice with something at least 1/2 oz, without hooks
Once the reel is properly set to the lure's weight, the only thing you need to do is stop the spool from spinning before your lure (or practice weight) hits ANYTHING, be it the ground in front of you, the water's surface, or your neighbor's fence. Feather it to a stop, or stop the spool dead cold. It doesn't matter. Just stop the spool from spinning.
Any mono from 10# up should be good to learn on. Save the braid for when you master the mechanics. When I use a newbie to casters, I spooled braid on. Wasted the entire spool on the first cast with a nasty nest. I didn't know any better, but from that point, mono for learning purposes. ;D

I'm no Quantum Junky, but I think every manufacturer has a few dissatisfied customers. Just trying to play devils advocate, but wasn't there a well publicized saga of someone getting like 3 or 4 bad Shimano reels in a row?
QuoteI deleted my "turds" comment. The fact is, Quantum reels have a well established

I can testify to that. I have had one Tour Edition Baitcaster and 2 Energy 20Pti-a spinning reels. All of them performed well and I really enjoyed using them but all 3 died after 18 months (or less) of use.
I have 3 Energy PT's. A E640PT, E750PT and an E770PT. The E770 and the E750 have been bought within the year but have met my expectations. The E640 I bought when the model first came out and I still LOVE this reel! Still casts like a dream even with lighter weight cranks! My oldest Quantum I bought back in the late 90's, so its pushing 10 years old and I haven't had any problems what so ever. I do take the time to clean and lube them. With a little TLC, I expect all my Quantums to last this long or longer (ya just have to get the Hot Sauce crap out of them)! ;D
My first "serious" bass reel was a quantum, and after less than a year, it has been taken off the rod and replaced with an Abu Garcia. First it was broken handle, then it felt like the gearing was dry no matter how many times I cleaned/lubed it. Not worth the hassle, and I know I was missing fish with that thing. It will be a long time before I pick up another quantum.
