Revo-S Vs Ambassadeur 5601C4 2025

fishing user avatarBig John reply :

I just recently got back in to fishing at the beginning of the summer and purchased a "box store" spinning combo, quantum nitrous. now, i have done a lot of research, and have narrowed my first baitcaster choice down to either the Revo-S or 5601C4. I know this is generally frowned upon, but I dont plan on buying another for a while and using it for a wide range of baits. Which would be the better choice for me? A little backround, I live in vermont, just minutes from lake champlain. I do a very wide range of fishing, pike, catfish, carp, bowfin, but bass are my favorite. Which one would you choose, and why? I am leaning towards the 5601C4 because of the pike / catfish. They are both close enough in price, that I am not worried about that. Either one will be paired with a MH rod with a fast tip. Rod suggestions welcome as well, but must be $100 or less. I am leaning towards a 7' MH/F mojo bass. I held one in a store, and really liked it. Im sorry if I am lacking any information, I would just like my first baitcaster to be a well though out, and informed choice. I asked my friend about them who has been fishing for a long time, and he wont tough a baitcaster, so I cant get any info from him! Thanks!

edit: I am also open to other suggestions, but the reel or rod cant be much over $100 each...im trying not to upset the wife too bad.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

Id go with the revo s it will handle pike just fine and be well rounded for others. The c4 I'm pretty sure has a low retrieve speed line rec. So it might not be good for some bass techniques. Id take a look at the veritas rods as well I have a 7'6MHF paired with a revo sx and love it.

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

id buy the reel that feels the best. then buy a Berkley Shock rod over the Mojo.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Nope just the opposite. The C4 has a 6.3:1 gaer ratio and takes up 30" LPT with more line capacity. Revo LPT is 27.8. Low profile reels are all the rage but those round reels are tanks. For an all around multispecies reel the c4 is a good way to go.

I would agree with Mike, with only one issue on the round reel.

Comfort/balance when handled with the rod over a full fishing day..

Tight Lines!!! :fishing1:

fishing user avatarBig John reply :

I have held a revo-s, but i have not held the c4. I would like to feel them both before I decide, but it may not be a possibility. as far as the berkley shock rod, i just looked it up. any advantages over the mojo bass besides price? does the mojo bass have any advantages over the shock rod? i have heard before from several sources that the c4 is a good multispecies reel, and thats originally where i was leaning towards. so one for the revo, one for the c4, and one for whichever feels best...anyone else have any suggestions? my thoughts where the c4 is a durable reel, proven by years of abuse and many users. but my big draw to the revo is 24 pounds of drag (which is a good thing, right?) and being a low profile i think it may fit my hands better. does anybody have measurements of a c4? length, width, height? like i said, i have not seen any in my area, and im curious what the size of it is?

fishing user avatarbreezy reply :

If you think you'll be focusing more on big fish (cats, pike, etc) I would go with.the c4. If your primary focus is bass I would lean towards the revo. To me LP reels are simply more comfortable after a day of fishing. I also love the Revo S, it feels very solid and mine have held up perfectly while catching stripers approaching 20lb and two 25lb+ flatheads. If I was targeting the larger species I would want a larger reel but the revo will handle them in a pinch.

Yup my mistake I looked in the bass pro catalog after making my post and see that. Id hold both on a rod make sure u like the feel of the c4. I have the cheaper bcx and love it but it quite diffrent and awkward at first.

They may advertise 24lbs of drag but in reality I'm sure most reels come in well below that. That much drag is useless anyway unless you're using 20+lb line.

For the rod I would probably stick with the mojo over lightning rod. The mojo bass line feels heavy and unbalanced IMO but still a better quality rod. Check out the Abu Veritas/Verdict, Shimano Compre/Crucial, Falcon Bucoo and BPS Carbonlite rods. All are the same price range and I would pick them over the mojo bass. My favorite would be the Carbonlite, it's the one rod I still use while the rest of my rods have been upgraded to Dobyns. The new Shimano rods look interesting but I have no experience with them yet. A lot of it comes down to personal preferences and that's just my opinion ;)

fishing user avatarBig John reply :

i had considered the carbonlite actually, i just have never held one. would you suggest the micro guide version or not? my thought would be no, as i plan to use braid with a fluoro leader. when i did that on my spinning reel i had trouble with the knot going through the guides smooth. although i had 4 pound diameter braid to a 20 pound fluoro leader...not my best choice. i learned that i should match the diameter closely. i was able to hold a mojo bass at dicks, and it felt good, but i have only been fishing again for a few months. i have not looked all the close, do they have the c4 at dicks? unfortunately, dicks is the only place in my area that sells tackle besides walmart. as far as drag, i planned to use 50 pound braid, but was somewhat suspect of the 24 pounds of drag considering most reels i have looked at have been in the 12 to 15 pounds of drag range. at this point i am leaning heavily towards the c4, due to the fact that i fish a wide range of fish, and was told that every fisherman should own a abu round reel, but am still open to suggestions. and since i have almost 300 yards of 20 pound fluoro with nothing to use it for, would both of the reels handle 20 pound test, or would one do better than the other? im sorry for all the long drawn out posts with millions of jumbled questions, i just like to get as much info as i can before i make a choice.

fishing user avatarPackard reply :

For bass fishing I'd go with the revo s. For all around fishing I'd go with the c4. I have had the opportunity to use both. I feel the c4 is stronger, durable, and unbeatable. The revo s however is more user friendly, more features, lighter, and balances better. For rods in the $100 range I have had good experience with the Falcon BuCoo, Bass Pro Extreme, Abu Garcia Veritas, Shimano Compre, and Bass Pro Carbonlite. My favorite is the Bass Pro Extreme with the Compre a close second.

fishing user avatarBig John reply :

thanks for the adivce guys. im am pretty certain i will be going with the 5601c4. now i just need to decide on a rod to go with it, the mojo bass doesnt get much praise around here. is the st croix premiere series any better? they are right in the same price range as the mojo bass.

I have used my friends premier and they are a great rod, they get praised a lot here.

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

Shimano Compre or Falcon Bucoo or BPS Carbonlite or St.Croix Premier or Carrot Stix WIld or any other rod in the 100 $ price range smile.gif Literally, the best decision will be what feels best in your hands with the reel on it. Feel with out the reel is pointless IMO. You can take a reel in, or ask the sales staff to put the reel on for you. Balance is key. I better balanced rod will be better fatique wise, and you will also have better feel, making it more sensitive. You will feel one you like. Go with that one cool.gif

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

Yeah the c4 has some weight to it(I have a 5600c4) so get a rod that balances well with it. Heck the MOJO might balance well with it Ive read that its tip heavy. I havd a Quantum Smoke rod and Premier and would put the Smoke above the Premier sensitivity/balance areas but the Premier is still pretty good. I put my C4 on the Smoke but it didnt feel right. The C4 sits high in the seat and just felt high-centered. I have another rod (pflueger) that the reelseat is lower and that is what the C4 goes on feels better.

So maybe pick a rod 1st then match to the Revo S or C4.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

I would recommend the Revo S. I have five of them and they are great. I also have a C4 (it is for sale in the flea market here on BR) and don't use it at all, it is too big for my hands. It is a nice reel though and casts a mile. As for rods, you have some good recommendations above, but I would also look at the Lamiglas Excel series. They are close to your price range, good warranty, and MADE IN THE USA!!!

http://www.***.com/Lamiglas_Excel_Bass_Series_Casting_Rods/descpage-LEBSRC.html

I have four of these rods and I can tell you they are sensitive and tough. This past spring I hauled a 6+ pound bass from some timber with the 703 medium light Excel, no probs!

i think when i get out of work today I will go to dicks and see if they have a c4. if they do, i will have them put it on the mojo bass for me to feel. the point about them being tip heavy may actually prove to work well with the heavier, higher center of gravity with the c4. i iwll see if they have a premiere for me to try it on as well, last time i was there they only had one.. I will check out the lamiglass as well, have not heard of them. any thoughts on getting a $30 ugly stick to save some money, and upgrade the rod down the road? i have heard the ugly sticks are pretty heavy, but weight is not a concern for me, my second job is cutting trees. after a day of that, fishing feels like tossing dental floss around.

The Premiere is the same as the Mojo only the Premier has one piece straight grips were as the Mojo has split grips. The other main difference is the Premiere is built in the US as were the Mojo is built in Mexico..

Good Luck & Tight Lines! :fishing1:

If you want to save money on the rod then I would look at the Berkley Lighting rod or shock. They are $40-$50 and are way better than an ugly stik.

fishing user avatarBig John reply :

ok. i looked at the shock rod yesterday on bps. i will see if dicks has any. i didnt realize the mojo bass was made in mexico? i just ASSumed they where all made in america, for what reason, i dont know. thanks again everyone, im still torn, so im going to try as many combos as i can at dicks tonight and see what feels right. hopefully sometime i can get to a store with more variety. anybody know of any places in vermont, or north-eastern new york with a wide selection of equipment? i went to gander mountain in plattsburg last month, but the store was full of people who couldnt answer my questions, or didnt care to even respond, so i will not be going back there again.

If you're looking to stay in the $35-$50 price range then the regular Lightning Rod wouldn't be a bad choice, but the Shock is just as whippy as the Ugly Stick. It might be fine for catfish, panfish, crankbaits, and bobber fishing, but it definitely wouldn't be on my list if I was looking for a bass rod.

Hey, I guess you didn't pick up that he's not using this for just bass fishing. He wants an all around setup so either would work, whatever he likes.

fishing user avatarStasher1 reply :

Actually, I did pick that up. He said he's a multi-species angler but bass are his favorite. ;)

It's like this - if he's interested in using soft plastics or any other contact baits to fish for bass, there are FAR better/more sensitive options than the Lightning Rod Shock/Ugly Stick/Voltaeus. If he's going to stick to bobber fishing, live bait, or cranks then those three would probably be just fine.

Really? I didn't think that there would be better rods than $50 rods. ;)

Of course there are better rods but if he wants to upgrade his rod later on then the Lightning rods will be fine. You can't get much better than the Lightning rod in the $40-$50 range. No one said that there's no point in spending more than $50 on a rod in fact most of us wouldn't spend less than $100. Oh and by the way, you keep mentioning that you don't need sensitivity for cranks when in fact you really do.

i am sure there are better rods than a $50 dollar rod, but like i said i would just like to save some money to keep the wife off my back for now. i use mostly senko's for my bass fishing so far, and the cheapy first combo i got is a medium rod, fast tip, and has 10 pound seaguar invizx on that setup. after reading the Guaranteed To Catch Bass

thread, i think that setup should do fine for now. actually, i have to get it warrentied because the tip is broke i think. there is a permenant bend about 6" down from the tip. webertime, where in VT are you? i see champlain vally so you cant be too far from me. i live in milton, work in essex, and spend most of my free time in hinesburg. i am waiting for my bike to sell before i buy a baitcaster, but i will let you know if i would like to check out the abu reel you have. if the bike doesnt sell, i wont be getting a baitcaster till at least xmas, more likely spring. btw, where did you catch that bass that was gorging on perch? i have only caught 2 bass worth mentioning since early summer (over 6"). the first was a smallmouth below the dam at ibm. there is a little spot that seems like it only gets water when the dam opens, and even then it may only be from the flooding this year. it was about 14-16" (i was too excited and didnt have a tape measure), the other was in lake champlain, somewhere in ferrisburgh on a boat, im not exactly sure where. was a largemouth, about 10-12". i hooked into a BIG largemouth in colchester pond, but he snapped the line after about 5 seconds (4 pound p-line cxx on a 5' ultralight). like a fool i reached down and turned up the drag when i should have turned it down and let him run!

If you like the feel of the Mojo and Premier, the Triumph might be an option that'll save you a few bucks. It's built on the same blank as the other two, but runs about $30 cheaper. It's built in the same plant in Mexico as the Mojo and some of SC's fly rods.

I have a 6'6" two-piece model that I keep in the back of the car/truck for those spur of the moment fishing trips. I have it paired with a Pflueger Trion GX-7 spooled with 30# braid, and it does the job with no complaints. Also, since I only have a total of about $110 in the outfit, I don't worry about breaking it or heat damage from sitting in a closed vehicle in the GA sun.

I am a Hinseburger myself! That's actually a Northern from some pond in the NE Kingdom. I've got a bunch of big Largemouth all around me, they are just well hidden;)

The IBM Dam is a GREAT spot for Smallies and BIG Fallsfish. There are even some Largemouths and good Brown Trout in there. One hole is full of Smallies and they loves them some Senkos (PM me for that spot).

Shoot me a message if you want to get together.

fishing user avatarbreezy reply :

Go ahead and buy the best equipment you can afford. If you buy cheap and upgrade later you will just end up wasting money. The $100-120 range for rods and reels has some great values that will last and be a noticeable upgrade.

Sounds like you're more interested in bass, get the revo. IMO it's much more comfortable after a day of fishing and well worth any sacrifice in line capacity etc. If you decide it's not up to the task for the bigger species then buy the c4

The Dick's where he lives has:

Carrot Stix Wild and PG's

Veritas

a mixture of St Croix Triumph, Premiere, Mojo Bass, Avid, Eyecon and Rage (sick feeling rod!)

Field and Stream Tec Spec

Skeet Reese (all with FREE bent or crooked guides)

Ugly Sticks

$25 Diawa's and Field and Stream's

And that's it! Although they do have a Quantum Code on some IM7 7' Medium rod for ~$100, it's a nice feeling little set up.

Another local shop has some Crucials, Convergences, Voltaeus, and random St.Croix Premieres.

Wally World has Berkley Lightening Rods for $35-ish. That's it folks.

There's a Gander Mountain over in Plattsburgh, NY. I have found that place to be real hit or miss on stock, but might be worth a trip (tell the lady you want to take her to Target, it works everytime!)
