I just ordered a Berkley Lightening Casting medium heavy duty fast taper 7' rod it was on sale for $30. I been looking for a heavier duty casting rod. I just don't like the upper weakness on some of my bait casting rods. I guess you call that the "power" of the rod. I plan on putting my new US Reel 800SX Hibdon super caster bait caster reel on it. I'm just not sure of using either 12# or 14# test line on it yet. I'm thinking of using it for top water and maybe cranks for now.
I think your rods that are "weaker" (your words) at the tip, are much better suited for the uses that you mention.
7 MH for larger, single hook techniques. Jigs, big spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, worms...
I have no idea why you keep buying junk and postings like it is something "special".
If you were really spending this much money on the crap you buy and post, why not
buy some decent gear?
I DO NOT think you help younger anglers promoting this stuff. A MUCH better plan
is to save their money and buy things that will last. All the crap you own will not be
something anyone else will fish five years from now.
I don't know what to say it's not something special it's just a fishing rod. I just don't know what to say. Any setup will get someone fishing and that's good. When I was a kid I spent $5 on a new zebco reel and I was happy to have it. Without it I wouldn't be fishing. I was happy to get a $40 rod on sale for $30 and replace my $9.99 rod what's wrong with that.
Well, it's not really a "fishing rod", it's a slight upgrade from a cane pole. For children and people that
don't fish, they might consider it a "fishing rod", but for our members it is NOT a reasonable option.
Does this mean you only want members who buy high end tackle and others who buy what ever aren't welcomed here? Don't all of us have the same interest in bass fishing? So I'm not welcome here? I been here since this forum first started.
I'm not a pro nor do I claim to be I'm just a guy who loves bass fishing. What tackle anyone uses or the cost of it shouldn't matter I'm out there fishing too.
Does the bass fishing tackle I use make me a lesser bass fisherman than the guy who has better equipment. Are we judged by what tackle we use?

Well now. I see just how i rate,if i dont spend a certain amount on a rod/reel? You sir are a fishing snob. Good Day!

It is more than a reasonable option. let the guy be excited about the learning curve there is with fishing gear. at least he's doing it at in expensive rate. this isn't TT. Don't try and make it out to be. Anybody on "our" message board can use "lesser" gear and believe it or not it's okay for them to use it..
I'm sorry maybe we need a section for we who purchase substandard fishing equipment. I just don't know what to say. I could fish with any rod as long as I could go fishing.
I'm fishing from shore do I need a $250 rod and a $200 reel? The bass has no clue what my stuff costs.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I didn't mean too.
RW I did say before I will buy a better rod after the holidays.

We don't. There's nothing wrong with your posts or the gear you are posting. RW is being a blatant snob for god knows what reason this time.
Wow RW, not what I would expect from a moderator. Not Cool.
I was happy to get this rod....But that's ok maybe RW is having a bad day as we all get. I'm sure we all have bad moments.
Glenn taught me how to use spinnerbaits and I had success with them. I had some great times here. It's time for me to move on sorry gals and guys, kids....

One of the things I enjoy most about fishing is that there is room for everyone. Get in where you fit in.
Given my previous comments about your recent reel buying spree bigbill, I'll do a 180 on the rod. A Lightning Rod is a good "bang for the buck" rod, all the better that you got it on sale. I own one of the Shock series Lightning rods. Funny thing is that rod sits on the deck of my boat, next to my $100, $150, and $250 rods, and puts just as many fish in the boat as the rest of them. If any one can find a better 7' MH casting rod for fishing reaction baits on braid, for the $39 I paid for it at Wal-Mart, I'll let them hit me with it..............
You can catch with whatever rod works, Bill. I STILL will use simple long poles (like cane poles, only better) to fish. I have even used them to target bass.
Bigbill I have a $30 ugly stick and a $300+ Croix Elite guess which rod has caught the biggest fish yep the ugly stick.
Who deleted all the posts? Now the truth is hidden about what was said? He talk smack then delete it. Even when your wrong.

Curious, indeed.
i'm sure roadwarrior decided to delete all his posts when he acted like a complete d.ouche. that's what he usually does anyway.
RW is a wimp. He won't admit he was out of line. He should not be a moderator. I never expected this kind of treatment on this forum. This was not right. I wonder if Glenn knows about this? I'll post about this everyday till I get some kind of answer why this happened.

Thanks!

I did nothing wrong. I was miss treated here. I had a lot of fun helping others I guess I stayed too long here since the beginning. I guess with my cheap tackle I'll never
Measure up to the higher priced tackle standards here.
I'm going to have to say good bye. It's been fun. This was said BY ME!
Ok so more posts have been removed BY ME.
I'm done babysitting adults. Either y'all get back on topic or I lock this thread.
Your choice!

Usually top water rods are shorter for better action of the bait, and crankbaits have a moderation action for better hookups and fighting.
The lightin is still a nice but the 7'MH fast would do better for the multipurpose spectrum like t-rigs/c-rigs/jigs etc.
I have an older Berkley cherrywood med action spinning rod that I use for my lighter carolina rigs and plastics/worms. It's has the perfect action and feel to it. Now I'm looking for a baitcasting setup for the heavier weighted c rigs?
I'm going to need advise as I buy new rods for making setups for each lure combinations. I'm going to an area I never done before.
Roadwarrior you can help me too. I want a few bait casting setups for each style of fishing/baits.
As mentioned, I would use that rod for single hook presentations - jigs, plastics, spinnerbaits, etc. The only topwaters I would really use it for would be a buzzbait or plastic toad, maybe a frog. For cranks, I want a moderate action rod. For topwaters with treble hooks (walking baits, etc.) I also like a moderate action and shorter that 7'. I'm not saying a 7' MH/F won't work, but its definitely not my first choice for cranks or most topwaters.
Regarless of the brands you choose, these are suggestions for Power and Action:
Topwater: MH/ F with a soft tip
Small swimbaits & swim jigs: M/ F
Shallow crankbaits: M/ Moderate
Deep crankbaits: H/ Moderate or Slow
Jigs and soft plastics: MH/ F or XF with a firm tip
Very good recommendation for the general use tab. While the technique and rod may vary from person to person, as may the length, the general power and taper is right on.On 10/7/2013 at 3:31 AM, roadwarrior said:Regarless of the brands you choose, these are suggestions for Power and Action:

Medium XFAST rods are extremely versatile. Let's take a 6-8 MXF avid casting. A perfect rod to fish jerkbaits, top waters, senkos, light finesse jigs, small swim jigs and small spinnerbaits. Also a super rod for flukes, light Texas rigs in open water, even for a heavier drop shot. The name doesn't necessarily mean a lot- the length, action, and taper are the most important. A 7-1 or 7-2 MH XFAST is a super jig rod, and will fish almost all of your Texas rigs and other plastics.
Don't get caught upon technique specific rods. One of the best "jig rods" ever made is also a phenomenal rod for heavy TX rigs and big spinnerbaits. Oh, and I have a spinnerbait rod that is the most excellent jerkbait and top water rod...
Thanks to everyone for your help. I have a better starting point now.
A while back I purchased a few baitcaster New rods that are 5'6" long.
Now I'm looking at New bait caster rods and don't see anything shorter
than 6'6"? The longer rods are for making longer casts. And more power on the hook sets right?
Casting distance, steering fish around sides of the boat, moving more line on the hook set for better hook penetration.
