Hi all,
I bought a Daiwa Steez A TW Casting Reel 1016SHL on the 10th of May 2017 from Tackle Warehouse.
After my 2nd outing with the reel two issues occurred with the reel.
1st: The pin that is adding to the stability of the reel got loose and eventually fell out.
2nd: The reel started making weird noises on retrieve.
I have to say that I am a bit disappointed that this happens on a 450 USD reel within the first 4 weeks, which is supposed to be a flagship reel of Daiwa. I have not experienced this with my high end reels from Shimano. It seems like this is a lemon...
I sent the daiwa guys videos of the two issues and eventually called them to follow up. They told me I have to send the reel in and expect a turn around time of 3-4 weeks.
This is kind of unacceptable to me, given the time that I have used the reel and the price class that the reel is in.
What would you do?
Thanks!
Contact TW and see what they suggest.

You are asking what to do ....... seriously ?

Well, not that obvious to me besides reaching out to Daiwa. What am I missing?
Shimanos from now on
Get it replaced or fixed. Then Sell for a high price to the diawa fanboys on the flea market. Next buy a shimano. Done
Call TW and let them know you are returning it.
I hope to be in that tax bracket one day. Must be nice!
Return it to Daiwa and get a new one. Then sell it to me for real cheap and buy a Shimano. That or wait out the 3-4 weeks (couldn't be a worse time of year either) and then enjoy your new reel, I'm sure the replacement will be fine.
I contacted TW and they told me that I should send it to them and they will exchange it. Great service! One of the reasons that I stick with them, even if I have to pay sales tax as a Cali boy!
TW would have been my first call.
^^^ exactly!
I am hearing about more and more issues with the new Steez A. I am wondering if I should exchange it to something else:
* Daiwa Zillion HD Casting Reels
* Shimano Metanium MGL Casting Reel
* Abu Garcia REVO MGX Casting Reel
I liked the reel from a performance, look and feel. But I am worried that I will have another issue with it down the road...
Oh well. I am just giving it another try, what can go wrong...
It seems that every now and again, someone will have a problem with a name brand. Several years ago I bought (3) Revo Premier Gen 1 reels. I love those reels, still have them to this day. Last year I bought (4) Daiwa Tatulas Type R reels. I've used 1 of the 4 and it wasn't what I thought was a great reel. In February I bought (3) Revo MGX reels at half off from BPS. I have been using them regularly and I love my MGX reels. I have heard so much negative talk about the MGX reels and how cheap they feel, however I do not have any complaints about them. They are very lightweight and are very easy to cast. All in all every manufacturer will at some point have a problem with their reels even their flagship reels. So, If it were me, and you love the reel get it fixed or replaced and use it. If you still don't like it go on to a different brand.
That reel won't work right if you run low on caviar or Grey Poupon®
What is the pin that stabilizes the reel? I want one!

What other issues are you hearing about? I have some interest in the regular Steez TW and would assume these issues would carry over.
Make sure the screw is tight on this one. If it loosens, tighten it. Use Loctite.

If it lets you down again, go with the new Metanium. You'll be happy with a Shimano in your hands.
I know a bunch of people with the non A version of the new Steez and they have all said it's one of the best reels they have ever used. Some of these people being very diehard Shimano fans too.
I'm intrigued to know what the stabilizing pin is more usually known as.
If you have problems get a sv103 and be done with it.
Ok, my model is not deliverable until August 30th. I do not want to wait that long for the replacement. So, I am considering other reels.
On the the list are:
* Daiwa Steez SV TWS Casting Reels 7.1:1
* Metanium MGL 8.5:1
* Abu Garcia REVO MGXTREME2 8.0:1
I would like to use the reel for: Topwater, Spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits (lure weights: 1/4 - 1.5 oz)
It is important to me that the reel is: Sturdy, has a good line capacity (at least 100yards of 14# mono) and is light (below 7oz)
What would you choose? Are there other options out there?
Thanks!
Personally I wouldn't want a reel faster than around 7:1 for those apps. I'd get a Tatula SV in 6.3 or 7.3 and use it until the Steez is repaired, then see how you feel about the whole situation.
Your first call should have been to me,I would have taken it off your hands.
And by "stabalizing pin" I can only assume you mean one of the frame screws. If a frame screw is loose you will have noise while reeling as the gears are not tight in place. Simply tightening the screws should fix any issues.
Only other "pin" I can think of is the line guide rail which cannot come out unless you take slide plate off and c clips.

I can imagine
it is the silver pin that sits right behind the worm shaft and is there to keep the two side plates in check.
I think I might go with the slower ratio instead for the Daiwa Steez A. Though I am still eying at the Daiwa Steez SV TWS, which would rule out saltwater use though (which is ok). I am just worried about the lure weights that I can throw with the reel. 1/4 oz - 1.5oz is a bigger spectrum and I do not want to over stress the reel...

The reel is just there to hold the line and store it on the spool. Your rod is what you have to be concerned with when thinking about 1.5 baits. The Steez sv tw can handle it.
Are there any reviews out there for the Daiwa Steez SV TWS? Would love to know a bit more about the durability (freshwater only).
Well,
I ordered 4 reels to compare:
- Steel A in 6:3.1 ( since the faster ratio is out)
- Metanium MGL in 7 ratio
- Daiwa SV103 in 7.9 ratio (is that reel saltwater proo?)
- Daiwa Zillion HD (seems to be saltwater proffed, but can not find a official statement on it)
Will check them out and see which one I like best and have most faith in.
I d use the Metanium, but the line rating concerns me since it is only 12/100 and I want to put 15-16 pound mono on it and I rete a lot.
Which one would you choose?
Funny how quick the Shimano guys show up when one Daiwa reel has an issue... meanwhile I'm sitting here thinking of the last 2 shimano reels I sent back (Met MGL, Chronarch CI4+) that both had quality control issues.
OP, the Steez A is an awesome reel and if you don't have the confidence in it and want some thing else, don't go to the Steez SV TW. Its the same reel with different knobs and a SV spool.
Maybe the reel is just disappointed it's not on a Dobyns rod?
Can you also answer the question people have been asking... what stabilizing pin are you talking about?? lol
I have this reel and many other Daiwa & Shimano reels, the Steez A is easily my favorite reel.
My Zillion SV TW with Hedgehog bearings and my Shimano Exsence DC are battling for 2nd place, but the Steez has quite a lead on 1st.
It is this pin
Ya idk how that would have just "fell out" after 2 days of fishing. The reel has to be apart to remove that anyways unless you removed the clip from the end of it. Those retaining clips are a ***** to get off so either 1) it wasn't ever there or 2) you took it apart to clean the reel and left something off. I'll have to take mine apart and look.
It's possible that clip wasn't fully pressed in when the reel was built and it pop back off. That's an easy fix but that clip would still have to be in the reel unless you took it apart (under the assumption it was partial installed on the pin to begin with)

Haven't touched the reel other than fishing it. Yeah no idea how this could have happened..

Wait until the day you guys to change line roller bearings and have to remove those clips... they are a PITA and don't come unless they feel like it. As I said, I think something like the clip not being installed properly might have been the issue. With that said, pull the handle off and remove the side plates. Check and see if those pieces are inside the reel. If they are you put them back on.
The reason I think they are in there is you said the pin fell out first, then you had weird noises in the reel. Those might be the washers / c clips rubbing and catching in the gear teeth in the reel.
What is on the other end of that pin that is covered by ur thumb? Is there a clip on that side?

I sent the reel back to TW already. Noway to test any more.
I think I am gonna decide between the Steez A and the Zillion HD. Both are for the salt and both have good line capacity. The zillion is 1 oz heavier and has the handle knobs that I am not really a fan of, but is almost 100 USD cheaper.
I think you need to go to a shop and try a few reels out. I can't see the zillion HD being a good swap for a Steez A. If you knew what you were buying a Steez A for, the Zillion or Tat TWS are a very different shaped reel.

@freelancer27 ^ This guy is right. Body shapes a very different if it is the older style Zillion or Tatulas. The closest you can get to the Steez A feel in the hand is the Zillion SV TW or the Tatula CT models. I have a CT Type R and that's a very good reel you can find on ebay for about $130. You can also get the Zillion for about $250 all day on ebay as well. Order from a reputable person. Now I love the older Tatula Type Rs and never had issues with the bigger body shape. All my cranking / chatter / spinnerbait setups I have are either on a Type R 100 or Zillion TWS.
If you want a great solid setup that will cast as far as the Steez A TW, pick up a Zillion SV TW and put these bearings on it:

Use code BBC10 and get 10% off too.
P.S. I give a lot of business to TW, but when it comes to ordering higher end Shimanos or Daiwas, I can always find a better deal on ebay and I have a 10% discount on everything from TW.

Yep, I ordered a couple of reels as mentioned previously, from TW. I will put them on my rod and just get a feel for them. I live 1h away from the next tackle store, so it is great to be able to take advantage of the return policy of TW.
I also purchased with my discover IT card, so if I see a better price somewhere else in the next 3 months, discover will match that price!

I just bought this Zillion reel and love it - already thinking about picking up another.

Ill tell you the same thing, put the Hedgehog Kattobi bearings in it. It makes a huge difference.
Also get two 4x7x2.5 bearings for like 8 bucks and replace the bushings in the handles. Link and discount code for tackletrap is above.
Sv103 is a good idea. Very impressed with mine.
Got the TW order today.
4 reels I ordered to compare:
* Daiwa SV Casting Reel 103XSL
* Daiwa Steez A TW Casting Reel 1016HL
* Daiwa Zillion HD Casting Reel 100HSL
* Shimano Metanium MGL Casting Reel 151HG
My resume:
Did not like the feel of the SV103 in my hand (on the rod) for some reason --> Out
The Daiwa Zillion HD had a sturdy feel to it, though I did not like the round handles and also the weight was a bit more than I would like --> Out
Daiwa Steez A. and Metanium I spooled up with 15 pound Yo-Zuri Hybrid Fishing Line Clear and went on a field and casted a few times with a 1oz lipless crankbait.
My result:
Distance wise: they are about the same, though the Metanium was a bit less effort.
LIne capacity: I can see that there is more left on the Steez when I bomb it out, but it should be fine if I put braid on the reel with a mono leader
Retrieve. Here the handle of the Metanium just felt sooo much better. The Steez almost hurt a bit when reeling in.
Final decision: I am gonna keep the Metanium. (Slowly turning into a Shimano man with my Conquest, Antares and now Metanium).
Let's hope I made the right decision!
