I'm about to respool all of my reels and before I buy another 1000 yards of power pro I want to consider using something else. I've been using the stuff for over a decade and it's simply not what it used to be. I used to beat the crap out of this line and never had it break. Yesterday I had it break three times and one of those was snapping on itself mid cast. I also never had to worry about how old it was. I can't help but think that's part of the problem. So I'm going to start anew and, very possibly, with a different brand. If anything out there holds it's color that would be a plus as well.
Suggestions?
i really like sunline
Power Pro is great braid. I still fish it but have started using Sufix 832, little smoother. But the original PP is still great line. Only other line I use is Spiderwire ultracast and only use that for my spinning reels.
After suffering some of the same unsatisfactory and unexplained foolishness you mentioned, I've switch from Power Pro myself.
Sufix 832 Braid Lo-Vis Green has be a solid & reliable replacement.
I'd recommend you try out a small "tester" spool for yourself before going all in on a career supply
Good Luck

Power pro is great braid. There is no doubt there are other good braid brands out there. If your power pro broke on you 3 times in one outing something is going on. Several factors could be the culprit. I will found out why first. Something could be wrong with one of the eyes on your rod and the next braid you choose will suffer the same fate.
I use hi-seas braid and I see nothing wrong with it. It is also made in the USA and cheap.

Probably a good idea.
My two biggest problems:
1. Line loops during a cast catching and snapping. NEVER happened until 3-4 years ago.
2. Line snaps when ripping lures out of grass. e.g. ripping a spinnerbait off of a lily pad stem. I used to rip entire pads clumps off the bottom. Now I can plan on losing the bait if I don't go and retrieve it.
Seaugar Smackdown or TUF-Line Tournament 8
As good as PP is, I like 832 better

Understand - And if you haven't already, check all your guides (use the Q-Tip deal) to ensure you don't have any bad ones. Could be a factor.

Sufix 832 for me. 10# for spinning. 30# for baitcasting. Been fishing it for 3 years and no problems.

I like 832 and SX1/FX2. 832 is smoother and quieter but SX1/FX2 is more durable IMO.
I like and use regular PP ... regularly.
10# Yellow for spinning
20# Yellow for bait casting
I always use a leader.
Braid's expensive to try out, so A-Jay's
suggestion of a small spool is good.
I'm getting low in my supply of PP, and
always question whether I want to try
something new or not. Most of the time
I return to PP. Guess I'm just comfortable
with it.

Do you ever experience the braid digging in with that diameter?
I just bought some PowerPro Super 8 Slick which looks promising. Much smoother and quieter than original PowerPro. I think the 8 strand braids like 832 are the better lines these days. The Super 8 Slick is also not real stiff. I do think super lines start to get weak when they get old.

Assume you mean for bait casting?
There is digging in from time to time,
but I often check the line if I've had a
tough fight, or a big snag.
Honestly, it doesn't bother me if/when
it does happen since it isn't too frequent.
No problems on spinning with the 10.
The suggestions to use another brand of other braid is sound. But I think the OP is missing something to cause that braid to be snapping like that with so much frequency. To the OP what lb braid are you fishing with? Have you always used this lb test of braid? Is it higher or lower than 40lbs? Where has the 1000 yd spool of braid been kept? Have you checked your rod? I have been using power pro for years. The only reason it snaps is when the line has some abrasion and the strands have been compromised.

Amen. Got a new Custom Rod and went out to the local lake to give her a whirl. On the 10th. or so cast, I launched my LC Spinnerbait into the next County. I retied and 10 or so casts later, I launched another LC Spinnerbait into the next County. I finally decided to see what was going on, I'm sometimes dense, and the transition guide of my new Spiral Wrapped rod had an edge like a razorblade. Sent it back and had the guide changed, problem solved. Brian.
Alternatives? Lots. Anything strictly better? Not really. It doesn't hurt to try new things. I tried the blue/green Sunline and I like it for some techniques.
I use Stren Sonic Braid. It's fairly quiet, stands up to abrasion more than most, and retains it's color fairly well. We've been useing it for the last 5 or so years without a complaint. Brian.

It's happened on nearly every rod and every reel on multiple spools bought over the last 4-5 years. I think age may be part of the problem as I can't directly recall it happening on fresh line. However, I used to keep PP spooled for years with no problems.
EDIT - looking back I would actually say more like the last 3 years. 4 years ago I was still using line that was at least 3-4 years old and only changed it because it was "old" and I started fishing tourneys every month. Maybe 2 years ago I had the first break off mid cast and have had several since then on many different reels. I think there's something where a loop in a backlash gets caught and the line isn't able to stand up to the shock on that small area.
I'm using and have always used 50lb. I used to flip with 30lb and rip lures out of emergent vegetation without a second thought. If I did that now it would break most assuredly.
I'm a big fan of Sunline SX1, only braid I use unless I'm froggin or punchin, then I use Sunline FX2. Sunline makes the best line all the way across the board IMO, but everyone has their own.
Sufix 832 for me
You didnt happen to get the fake PP thats been sold the last few yrs????
PP is good. PP slick 8 is fantastic. I get a few years out of most reels, just cut off the last 30 yards a season or so. Never had any problems. Keep us posted with updates, if you had guide issue or not. Could just be a bad lot of line
I to like the stren sonic braid. I found it super cheap on the auction site and gave a few spools a go. I have been using the same line for three years. The suffix performance braid is my other first choice. I like and use them after using 832/ppss8/pp and I lile them better. I am curious about the 8 carrier tuff line and may try that some day.On 3/12/2015 at 5:59 AM, a1712 said:I use Stren Sonic Braid. "Anything better than PP" Not for me.
Never had a problem with PP. Most of my reels are spooled with PP regular. I have bought 832 to try out though. Just waiting for the season to start to fish it!
Have I ever had a lure go flying, sure I have but it's never been the fault of the brand, something caused that line to have weak spot.
I have tried many brands both 4 and 8 carrier, I don't find noise to be bothersome or even that noticeable. The only problem I ever have with braid is tangles or wind knots, does not happen very often with heavier lures. A few months ago I spooled up with 10# US Braid, very cheap, I like it as well as anything I have ever used. I use this spinning outfit nearly everyday using inline spinners, have yet to have a wind knot, I'm impressed. Same case scenario with other lines, windknots left and right.
So impressed I spooled up 2 of barracuda rigs with 20# braid, this will be my line of choice until proven otherwise.
I'm fairly green, but I've been using PP and sufix 832 without any problems. I find 20# 832 better for spinning gear than 20# PP. I also have some Sufix performance braid to try this year.

This is good info, placing an order on Walmart, thanks.
Seguar Smackdown. I have it on 80% of my reels. One reel has Power Pro super slick just because it was available locally and I needed line. I definitely like the smackdown better.
Is there a braid that has not had a color dye added? Just the natural color of the fiber?

Seems like Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-Braid & Sufix 832 Braid Ghost are at least two I've seen that appear to be Dye free.
I have Not fished either however.
A-Jay
PP #15lb. for Spinning (best compromise between too light #10lb. and too heavy #20lb.)
PP #30lb. for Bait Casting (light cover ; open water ; top water)
PP #40lb. for Bait Casting (moderate cover ; where abrasion might be a factor)
Using all above in Hi - Viz Yellow + FC or Mono leader .
I got slick 8 powerpro in blue. Why? Because I felt like hell yeah blue line and it's super smooth. I have zero compliants with powerpro. I just switch my line every year because it sits in the garage during the winter.
Suffix 832 Gohst, I believe A-Jay is right,,, it appears to me to be dye free
After using suffix 832 in 10, 20, and 30 pound, I can never go back to power pro. It has been about two years now, and have no regrets.
use yellow 832 on everything but giving the trilene tracer braid a shot on a couple of rods this season.

Along with the above mentioned two lines, regular PP comes in a white color as well. Been fishing it on a couple spinning reels and it's great. To me it seems to be ever so slightly softer or more limp than the green PP. Could just be my imagination though.
