Looking To Buy A New Worm/jig Rod! 2025

fishing user avatarClackinrap reply :

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a new casting rod for worms and jigs, mainly weightless wacky rigged senkos (sometimes with a 1/16oz weight), texas rigged senkos/other worms, and 1/4oz - 1/2oz jigs.

I bought the Bass Pro Extreme Low Profile baitcast reel in a 6.3:1 ratio.  I also ordered the Bass Pro XPS Extreme Trigger rod in a 7' MHF config, and intended to use this rod for the above mentioned techniques.  Unfortunately, the rod has been on backorder and Bass Pro keeps pushing back the expected arrival date, and I'd rather not wait any longer.

I'm looking for assistance on what rod I should buy, and hoping to spend around $100.  I've currently got 12lb fluoro on the reel, and would prefer to keep that on there since it's brand new line.  Most of my fishing (around 75%) is done from a kayak, not sure if that needs to be taken into consideration.

Thanks!

St. CROIX mojo bass rod has a technique specific worm/jig rod you could look into there great rods I believe it's a 6'10" medium heavy. I would also look into the 13 rods as both are in your price range.

Cabala's Tournament ZX Worm Rod - regular $100 now on sale for $69 .

If you have a dicks sporting goods near by, they are having SCREAMING sales on Abu Garcia veritas and shimano crucial rods. Like 75% off deals.

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

A shimano crucial at 79$ (my dicks has them) is a heck of a deal

WHOA !!! I'll look at my local store, but can almost guarantee they won't have any Crucials.  They have some cheaper Shimano rods, but I don't recall seeing any Crucials

fishing user avatarBiteFiend reply :

7' MH. What other people like, you may not. There are many decent sticks at that price point. For instance, I have a *** that I really like for it's price point, except a lot of people don't like the handle. I also have a St. Croix Premier that I like but not quite as much as the ***. A friend of mine likes his Premier better than my ***.

Take your reel to the store(s) with you, put them on the rods you are considering and decide what you like best.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Take a look at Lamiglas Excel II, 7'3" ML, under $100 and excellent warranty and customer service.

MH rod will be too stiff for bait casting light weight Senko's effectively.

Tom, is this the older ugly colored sticks?  I can't find a ML in the new Exdcel Bass II series.

fishing user avatarCapt.Bob reply :

I prefer a MF 7' rod for anything under 3/8 oz "except when I'm fishing HEAVY cover" for all heavy cover and jig's and some rig's over 3/8 oz I prefer a 7' MHF.  If I were looking for a rod in the $100.00 range I would be getting a St. Croix Premier, full cork handle, with one piece reel seat, and a good lightweight sensitive rod.

fishing user avatarNathanW reply :

From a Kayak I would go with a 6'10" Medium *** Black. These rods are as good as it gets for those techinques. Especially if you have not tried one yet. Note that if the grip is uncomroftable just take a file to the sharp edges on the reel seet until they are rounded and smooth. Honestly once you buy one you will not want to fish with any other rod (for these techniques).

Medium Light in the new blue series; EXL 733C. TW has them for $99, check with Ron at Vallet Sports, he may be able to do better.

A crucial on clearance is the best bang for the buck IMO right now. I'm looking to ****** up 2 more before the stock dries up.

fishing user avatarbassinNorthMS reply :

Shimano has a rod that is technique specific. The Shimano sellus rod you can get for $49.99-$59.99. Though I don't know of any stores that carry them. Maybe Bass Pro? I've read that most people like them. That's gonna be my next rod

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I love my BPS Extreme rods. A little on the heavier side compared to some other higher end rods, but they're still great rods for the money. If you're trying to stay in the $100 range, I'd recommend checking out the Fenwick HMG and HMX rods.

Wow, I'll definitely have to check my two local stores and see if they have any Crucials in stock! Thanks for the heads up!

I'm curious about this Lamiglas rod, WRB.  Will the ML make it harder to use for throwing my 1/2oz jigs?  I always thought I wanted a good MH rod for setting the hook on worms/jigs too (I'm poor at hooksets).

Everyone else, thank you so much for the input, I'm putting a list together to do some research!

fishing user avatarSnakehead Whisperer reply :

Can you return/exchange the reel? If so you should check this out.

BPS PQ/Carbonlite Combo

Pretty hard to beat this combo at this price point.

Lamiglas is very similar to Dobyn's rod ratings, 3 power is equal to other mfr's MH rods; 733 Dobyn's and Lamiglas are excellent general use bass casting rods. The OP said this rod was primarily used for Senko's with 1/8 oz weights and jigs/worms. You can go to a 734 4 power rod that is MH for most other rod makers, better for jigs if that is the primary use, a little more difficult to cast Senko's without back lashing.

The 733 is rated for lure weights 1/4 to 3/4. Line to 17 lbs.

I'd look at some of Fenwick's lineup. Awesome budget rods.

Well, I stopped at my local Dick's Sporting Goods store tonight.  Sign out front said "Dicks Clearance Event".  They sure weren't clearing out fishing gear.  Not one rod on sale.  Normally there are 3 racks with mostly lure sale items....often treble hook baits in colors that must not be very popular.  Wasn't even one clearance rack.   The did have 2 spinning reels on sale.  $20 off the Daiwa Lexa 2500 and $60 off the Smoke PT 25.

My local Dicks's sucks almost as bad as my local Walmarts.   :sad78:    Not quite, tho, as I usually buy my lures from Dick's WHEN they do have a sale.  Walmart never seems to have a sale.

fishing user avatarOroBass reply :

I too am in the market for a bottom plastics / jig rod 1/4 to 1/2 or so. What about duckett? Does anyone use the ghost for this application and if so what are your thoughts?

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Idk.. But I throw 5" senkos all the time on a 7'5" loomis heavy weightless w/cps owner 5/0

And medium/ fast and spinning rods too....

You have to use the rod that suits you're style and conditions you fish... Lots of rod types will work with Senkos and Trick worm presentations.

Good luck and enjoy you're new rod whatever it may be!

Ended up buying a Shimano Crucial.

One of my local DSG had one on hand (I called all three nearby too) and at $80, I couldn't pass it up!

Great deal. Which Crucial did you get?

Wound up with a 6'8" MHF! Pretty happy that's the only one they had.  I would've liked to have a 7', but I don't think it'll be too much of an issue.

It also gives me a reason to buy more gear next year :laughing7:

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

Just got the last Crucial spinning rod at our "local" store. It's a 7' 2" mh/f.

Didnt really need a mh spinning rod as I only use them for Shaky and Wacky rigs and always use a med/xf.

But for the quality of the rod and the price...I'm sure I'll learn to love it.

Mike

fishing user avatarsprint61 reply :

I would suggest a halo daylite 7'MH great rods at a very good price and a pretty good warranty. I'm pretty sure it is free to replace for a year and $20 for each replace for 10 years after the free one year they are nice rods for $80.
