Best All Around Casting Rod For $100 Or Less? 2025

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

I'm thinking at least a 7ft. pole, MH with a fast action. I do mostly shallow cranks but some frogs, soft baits and buzz baits as well. I've heard that the Berkley Lightning Rod Shocks are good for about $50 and that Berkley has a new pole called the E-Motion that is getting good reviews and that goes for about $80 but what else would be a good all around casting pole?

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

I see a lot of those lightning rods around. I'm a pretty big advocated for Dobyn's Rods, those new furys are pretty nice.

fishing user avatarJaw1 reply :

Ducket ghost, st croix mojo, some TFO rods,Abu veritas to name a few. If I had to pick it would probably go to the ghost, with the mojo a close second. I've owned them all and they all have their place and fans. I am not an Abu rod fan (had to many break) but the veritas has a big following around here

fishing user avatarMwelder28 reply :

Check out the ghost rods I really like them for 100 bucks.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

How about the Academy Sports H2O Express Ethos rods? You can get them for $60 and just wondering if anybody has experience with them.

Yes, get one!! If you wait until they have their sales, you can get the regular ethos for $39 and the micro for $59.

Abu Garcia Veritas, Denali Jadewood, Duckett Ghost, St. Croix Mojo Bass, Kistler Magnesium (on sale for 109 on Tackle Warehouse)

All are around 100 or cheaper, personal favorites being the Ghost, Magnesium, and ***. All depends on what rigs you plan on using it for since action isn't an industry standard as far as lure weight goes.

I fish mostly shallow cranks (a few deep divers), soft bait (senko's), frogs and other top water lures and some buzz baits.

In that case I'd definitely go with the Ghost in Medium action.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

I use a Medium/Heavy Abu Garcia Vengeance spinning rod with a fast action now and like it...would it be the same for a bait cast rod?

Should I get a casting or a cranking rod for the bait I use? I want flexibility, don't want to have multiple rods for each type of bait...just one that does everything well.

fishing user avatarPoolshark reply :

7 medium fast or medium heavy fast. IF.....I only had one I would look for a rod rated for 1/4 to 3/4 ounces and a fast action. There are a lot of good brands reccomended here. I personally like bps brand for cheaper rods in that price range like the carbon lite, extreme etc. but that's just an opinion and what I'm comfortable with. It's up to you to find what works for you.

I have a MH Fast 7' Academy Ethos blue casting rod. Compared to my St Croix Avid ( which I love) the Ethos is a great value and a stout rod. Plus Academy replaces them if you have the receipt and they break.

fishing user avatarsprint61 reply :

Deffantiely get a magnesium from TW that's on sale. If not that I would reccomend a lews tp-1 or custom speed stick(can be had for around $110 on eBay). Lews rods are highly over looked.

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

Abu Garcia Vendetta @ ~ $80 is a great rod for the money. Heck, it's a great rod period. The Vengeance is a bargain @ ~ $50 also.

I own and use both and, IMHO, they both fish well above their price point.

I've been reading A LOT of reviews on TW for all of these rods and it seems many of them have broken on people, that kinda sours me a bit when I read that. Now I realize that every rod probably has a chance to break at some point but the reviews I've read on the Dobyn's Fury all seem positive with no one saying their's broke on them...what do you guys think of this rod? Obviously this rod could break under certain circumstances too I'm sure but it is nice to read a rod's reviews where everyone seems to love it and nobody mentions anything about breaking.

fishing user avatarJosh Smith reply :

I like the Berkely Cherrywood HD a lot more than I should.

I've found that reviews on sites like TW sometimes tend to be skewed toward the negative side. Many people who buy a rod and are happy with it never write a review, but people who have a problem are quick to blast the manufacturer in a review. It's just human nature, I guess.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Well, the good Dobyn's reviews I saw were on TW too...that's why I kinda' wanted to see what people on here think of the Dobyn's Fury rod.

fishing user avatarsofarfrome reply :

If $100 or less is your primary limiting factor then I would recommend this one: *** *** Black 2 Cast Rod 6'7" Med Hvy. $99 and full cork handle. This is a lot of rod for $99. IMHO of course.

Your right any rod can break. If it's a manufacture defect it will probably show up pretty quickly and hopefully would be replaced under warranty. Anything beyond that and a break is probably the result of some sort if mishandling.

$100 rods seem to be very popular and I'm sure companies sell thousands more of their $100 model compared to their top end model. The more out there the more that break and hence your negative reviews.

I no nothing about the Powell your asking about but had a Powell bait cast rod and thought it was very nice.

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

My first $99 rod was a Veritas.  I now own three different sizes/actions.  They're light as a feather, sensitive, and hold up to everything except my truck's tailgate... where Abu sold me a replacement for a fraction of retail.  I dropped by Dick's today and discovered they had a few on clearance (I'm going to buy my 1st micro-guide rod tomorrow, as a result).

My next favorite rod is 13's *** Black, for the same reasons as the Veritas.  I might give the *** a slight advantage in sensitivity.

There IS a SUBJECTIVE aspect to buying rods, so try to handle as many of the models you're interested in prior to plunking down your cash.  Bring a reel with you and ask if you can mount it (put tape on the reel's feet so you don't mark the rod if that matters to the store owner/clerk).

Best of luck finding a rod.

fishing user avatarWPCfishing reply :

Check out the Tech rods at Dick's Sporting Goods. They're very nice rods under $100.00.. sleepers.
