Well my first baitcaster was a Rick Clunn, and that reel is still with me. Not that I use it, but its the easiest reel to learn on. And its a alot cheper than 220. But if you want to spend the money then go with the Shimano Curado e7.

I don't have a lot of experience with BC reels, but my Shimano Chronarch 51MG is by far the easiest to use. You can probably find closeouts for under $200.
Set 3 brakes on and just tweak the spool tension. It will be especially helpful when you are using lighter baits.

There are many excellent reels in the $80-$150 range so if you buy right, you could get 2 for your price range. Check this thread out:

It's also a reel you won't "outgrow" like alot of cheaper BC's, so you'll actually save money in the long run.

I would go with 2 very good reels vs. 1 excellent reel for numerous reasons.
In that list I would hardly call the Revo S or the Citica "ok" reels. Good grief.

I've never used a Revo S, but the Citica 200E I owned was far from impressive. I wouldn't trade my Patriarch for four Citicas, but to each his own I suppose.

I have two Citica 200D's, I modified to 7:1, three Citica 100DSV's, I put ABEC 7 bearings in, and one Citica 200E, as is. All are superb reels for the money. I have never had a minute of trouble with any of them and I fish the daylights out of all of them . In my book they are excellent performing reels for $120. I clean and lube my own reels.

I would go with the citica, curado, or revo. Had the Patriarch and never really cared for it. I did have the narrow spool and would have much rather tried the wide spool. All of my reels are shimano (1 curado, ,3 citicas, and a saros).

I would go with the Curado. The reel is much smoother and casts light baits much better then the Citica. Don't get me wrong the Citica is an excellent reel, but the Curado is just that much better.

this is one you will always fish. Shop around or just keep
an eye on our Flea Market. You can buy a Curado for around
$150.
I consider the Curado 200 E7 the "Best Value" at this pricing
point.

You know, I have to agree with this. I got to cast this reel a bit yesterday and today. The Patriarch really is a good reel.
The thing that really impressed me is the size. It feels smaller than the Revo. It's about as big as the TD Sol. It palms very well. Unlike with the Revo or Curado, you can wrap your front index finger around the front of the reel and not even feel the pawl cap as it sweeps back and forth. Along with more expensive Daiwas, it's the best palming reel out there.
The other thing is that the spool doesn't hold too much line. It's enough for long casts, but not so much that it won't throw a light bait. I was pretty impressed with how far this reel would throw a 1/4 practice plug.
Now that Pure Fishing is servicing these reels in their Iowa World HQ, I not only get an excellent reel, you get PF's excellent customer service.

Daiwa Sol or Daiwa Feugo.....both are on sale for 199.99 at bass pro shop....retail is 249.99..also check the flea market..alot of great deals on there...picked up a sol for 150 couple weeks ago

Daiwa fuego is an extremely nice reel,but far from easy to cast with it.Shimano curado is much easier to cast.
This is from personal experience.
I'm getting real close to getting rid of my Daiwa fuego. :'( Right now i'm just using it as my 1/2 oz or higher weight jig set-up.Anything under i keep getting overruns.
Never tried the Pflueger Patriarch so i can't comment on it.Pflueger Trion was an easy casting reel(i was impressed),i just couldn't figure out the brakes on it.So i ended up giving somebody a deal on it @ the flea market.

The Curado 200E7 is another fantastic reel that's extremely easy to cast. When I thinned out my gear collection a while back I kept two baitcasters. One is a Patriarch 64WLP that I use for lipless and shallow cranks, and the other is a Curado E7 that I use for soft plastics.

I would save and buy one good reel like some have already stated! Personally, i have not found a reel that casts smoother and farther than a Revo STX.

Chronarch 50/51Mg is the easiest reel I have ever casted, and I am in my first full year of using a baitcaster. Revo S is also good, but I had a heck of a time with the SX. I also second the new Curado, but I just had an isolated problem with it rubbing against my thumb. I would have 2 or 3 if it wasn't for that.
The only other reels that I have thrown are a Daiwa Sol and Fuego. I still have the Sol and sold the Fuego. If you can find a 50/51 chronarch I would pick one up; otherwise look at a Curados.

A good bass reel is just like anything else, you get what you pay for. I would suggest a mid range shimano like the citica, or the daiwa tierra, or a revo s, or sx. If you are more comfortable with the six pin/vbs style reels you can get a abu c3 to start out. I can put down my zillion and pick up my new curado and throw both the same, I think it comes down to skill, and technique.

I recommend the Daiwa Sol. Being a beginner, the externally adjustable brakes on the Sol are easier to contend with while you are learning, and you can back off the brake setting in smaller increments. However, the most important feature the Sol has over several other reels mentioned is it's low line capacity. Light weight spools are easier to start and stop, which equates into fewer backlashes.
