9:1 Gear Ratio 2025

fishing user avatarChance_Taker4 reply :

What does everyone use their 9:1 reels for? I just purchased a KastKing Mega Jaws but not sure what I'll use it for. I don't think it will have the "Torque" to pull the fish from slop as with frogging and punching. I thought maybe jerkbait and topwater but may be a too fast. Just like to hear what your doing.

fishing user avatarDens228 reply :

The only thing I could think of would be maybe a plastics reel where I want to get it back to the boat as fast as I can after leaving the target area so I can cast again.

But personally I see no need for a ratio that high.

Neither do I.

A 7 is fast enough for me but only in certain situations.

As far useing a high speed reel for bottom contact presentations, I'd rather have a 6 because of the difference in the tourqe which is more important down here.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

i would use it for everything i use, buzz toads, buzz baits, jigs and frogs  except chatter baits/spinner baits because the low torque would tire me out faster.

That's exactly what I use my Speed Demon for. Helps me cover a lot of water.

I had 2 occasions last year where I wish I had the faster reel. I was reeling Smallmouth Bass in and both times they swam left towards submerged timber. Couldn't reel fast enough to stop them from getting tangled in the wood.

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

Don't have a 9:1 reel, but my 8.5:1 reels do plastics and frog duty.  Love a fast reel.

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

I have a speed demon pro. Use it for worm and jig fishing. iI picks up line quick.

I never understood the not enough torque argument. I don't use the reel to get a fish out of slop. I use the rod.

if your rod is not heavy enough it does not matter what gear ratio you use in cover.

Thats deep.

Just curious, what it has to do with a high gear ratio reel

fishing user avatarCroakHunter reply :

Anything over a 7 speed reel gets pitching, texas/Carolina rig, punching, buzzbait, and frog duty.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Torque to winch the bass out of slop.....you do that with your rod, not reel. The next evolution for bass reels is light weight 2 speed reels.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

How did we ever manage to hook, fight & land any bass at all with 5 to 1 ratio reels ?

Seem impossible - and with brilliantly golden mono no less.

What's the deal ?

Maybe it's because that's all we had.

I guess we made do with what we had. 5to 1 still works

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

You move the fish with the rod, not the reel. Any place you need to pick up line quickly will work.

I read somewhere, I believe w-2-f that the higher speed reel's internals cannot withstand the abuse of constantly bringing in the fish and the slop that comes with frogging and punching. The lower the ratio the more abuse it can take. I bought the Mega Jaws as a frog reel but was second guessing it after reading this.

Most casting reels have less than a 25lb drag. Any quality reel should be able to handle that.

If it fails, that is more a testament to the quality of the reel, than the ratio.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

The drag would slip before the internals gave in.  That's the purpose of drag.  At 25 lbs., most rods would snap anyway.  The only time I've seen a reel detonate is when there was some sort of user error or abuse, where the reel wasn't operated normally, or a manufacturing defect.  Usually it's someone engaging the spool while a fish is running, or accidentally pressing the spool release when fighting a fish.  This can and will strip a pinion gear.

fishing user avatarGReb reply :

My personal opinion is its simply a marketing scheme and most weekend fisherman catch more fish with a lower gear ratio reel.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

It's not marketing if the spool diameter is smaller than reels made in the past (many are).  Then ratio has to increase to get equivalent IPT.  I do agree there is a lot of "More:1 is better because it's faster" marketing is out there.  I've often wondered why they don't start using wider, lower profile spools, with higher gear ratios so that the amount of line out has less effect on IPT.

fishing user avatarHeartland reply :

This ^^^^^^

Me too.

And it's really all they have left.

Unless the entire frame is made from actual carbon fiber, don't think we can get much 'lighter'.

In what seems to be an effort to be the 'lightest', New Reels are getting so small now they barely hold a full cast of anything over 17 lb test.

I'd love a reel that had the right width , capacity & strength - regardless of how light it is.

I'm a grown *** man, I can still fish with a 12 oz reel !

All Day Even . . .

fishing user avatarWay north bass guy reply :

I have a couple Revo rockets, and they’re excellent for pitching baits, especially when your moving quick and making short pitches while covering water. It takes almost no time to get the bait back to you for another pitch. That kind of stuff adds up over the course of a day to a lot more casts at a lot more targets. As for torque, I’ve caught lots of good sized bass and some pretty big pike with them, and it’s never once been a factor in being able to get the fish into the boat ( if they’ll hold up to an angry 40” northern, a bass won’t be an issue).

fishing user avatarChance_Taker4 reply :

Thanks guys I think the Mega Jaws will be a pitching reel and my 7:1 STX will be my froggin

One of my first worm reels was a blazing fast Lew's 3.8:1 with a hook set button that locked the spool in place. I remember reeling like crazy to keep up with almost every fish with that reel but I still caught a lot of fish.

I use my 9 ratio reels for jigs, worms, frogs, and buzzbaits. I'm up to 4 of them now.

That's quite a difference from 3.8:1 to 9 something . . . .

I remember the 'reeling like a madman' - did it repeated in Oct south of the border fishing the Calcutta 300D.

It's 5.8:1 but the big green ones can really move when they want to.

Be using the big Tranx HG more next time.

Use my 9 for football jigs and love it....The smaller profile reels really help keep my hands from hurting as much.  Bone on bone in the thumb area can be telling!  No problem will line capacity.
