Picked up my rod yesterday, unhooked my shakyhead from the keeper, and gave it a fling. Right as I released heard a pop and there went the tip of my rod with the shakyhead. It broke off about 1/8'' below the tips wrapping/glue.....
I thought I heard something about an over the counter, no questions asked warranty in the first year??? It's a Cumara CUS-DX72M and less than a year old. I bought it from a tackle shop on ebay. What do I need to do to get it warrantied?
Not having this rod makes feel like my wife left me and took everything. :'(
If you had bought it local and could walk into the shop with the receipt then yes you could do the over the counter, but since you bought it from a ebay store you will more then likely have to send it into Shimano along with a valid dated sales receipt.
You might get lucky enough to go into a BPS or Cabelas and be able to exchange it, but I wouldn't bet on it without a receipt, but who knows you might get lucky.

Return it where you got it from....
Or

Ask Shimano how to handle it.
Best of luck.
Shortly, after buying this rod on ebay is when I saw a post where people were talking about not buying a rod on ebay because of this reason.
I just pulled up my paypal activity. In this certain situation I bought a CUC69MH which was listed at the time on Shimano's website as a Med Hvy Fast tip but it got here and was a Med Hvy X-Fast tip. It was a mistake on Shimano's website, that was corrected after I brought this to their (Bantam1) attention.
I didn't like the rod so I sent it back to the tackle shop (with$20)and they sent me back a CUS-DX72M becuase that was all he had in stock that I wanted.
So, my pay-pal receipt says CUC69MH. Unless he will make me a receipt for the DX72M I'm screwed. People, learn from this and forget about that $20 you'll save on ebay. BUY FROM A TRUSTED RETAILER!!!!
I'd contact Shimano and explain your problem to them. They might just surprise you.
I'd also recommend that you at least contact Shimano, they are pretty cool about replacing rods, after all, what do you have to lose..?
Or you could just take it to Bass Pro Shops and see. You'd be suprised.

Or he could actually be honest and not try to screw some store that has absolutely nothing to do with his situation.

Call Shimano, Philsoreel. They'll be more than happy to help you. You may also want to send a PM to Bantam1. He's the resident Shimano guru. I'm sure you'll be paying something, but it'll probably be less than the cost of a new rod. Only takes a moment to pick up the phone and give them a buzz.
I never said be dishonest. I had a rod tip snap off and took it to my local Bass Pro where I shopped and told them. They said they'd handle the return for me and let me pick another one off the shelf.
Just give Shimano a call they are an awesome company and although it wont be free they will most likely send you a new rod. Good luck!

BPS has treated me very well with exchange/returns. i think Fat-G found out the same thing.
This issue isn't about BPS and being able to return it. I think most of us will agree that BPS is generally very good able handling returns. The problem is that he didn't buy it from BPS. That store shouldn't even be mentioned in this specific situation.
Some stores simply support the product they sell. I know when I ran retail, I'd take defective exchanges from other stores, simply to possibly earn a new customer. It makes great business sense, as long as you can get credit for the defective item.

i understand what your point is, but let me say i have a Cabelas about as close as a BPS and i rarely ever go there, for good reason.
I bought one at the classic last year. Broke my cumara a couple weeks ago. Nashville BPS would not help without a receipt from them. Local store in dover tn, swaped out for me. Shimano told me it's a over the counter warranty, but it is up to each dealer to honor it(bought from them or not). Could send back to them(shimano) they'd take care of it.
Thanks, to U.S. Bass in dover for helping me out.
If worse comes to worse, you can put a new tip top on and never miss the inch that's missing. There are multiple good reasons to support local businesses and I often spend a little more than I have to in doing so. However, it's not always critical that a retailer have a brick & mortar store to be trustworthy.

From that standpoint, it does make sense.
BTW, the both BPS down here are no longer doing the over the counter Shimano warranty. After 30 days, you need to deal directly with the manufacturer.
That seems silly of BPS. They are eliminating reasons to shop at their store. What benefit do I get by traveling a couple of hours to one of their stores?
If I have to deal with the manufacturer there is no reason for me not to purchase online.
You can always ship it back to shimano for a free replacement, just give them a call on shipping arrangement. They would accept broken down rod in to small chunks for you to save on shipping.
Here in socal, we usually drive to Shimano center at Irvine and they normally replace it over the counter otherwise they would ship the replacement to your door when they don't have it in stock available on your visit.
First off...
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. If things hadn't worked out I would have contacted Shimano. I've always heard nothing but good about their customer service.
As usual, I got my undies in a wad over nothing. My shakey/drop-shot rod was out of commission, it felt like the tip of my most important rod had been broken off... I called the shop I bought it from and explained what was going on. He told me he would be more than happy to make me up another receipt with the correct model number on it. He said he would warranty it if I wanted him to but of course I would have to absorb the shipping cost, expected and totally understandable. My closest Shimano dealer is about 90 miles away so I said, "Why don't I just send this one to you for warranty, buy a new rod, and you stick the warranty in with the new rod to save on shipping cost?" I ask him how much he would sell me a Cumara Reaction CUC70H for, shipping and all...He says $185!!!!! I almost dropped the phone! BPS gets $219.99+shipping for that rod. Awesome. Then, he gives me a tip to keep from having to pay the balloon charge for a package over 80'' Cleanly cut the rod in half and it get's the package down below the balloon charge. It made the cost of return shipping drop from around $24 to $6 USPS Priority Mail.
Before this, I had only heard that Shimano had an over-the-counter warranty. Well, they do. Just keep up with your receipt and according to my retailer most Shimano dealers will honor it pretty much no questions asked. Barring there are no teeth marks from your dog or tire tracks on it etc...
Glad you got it figured out. Let us know how you like the new rod.

Thanks and I will. I'm pretty sure I'll like it. DD22's wear me out with my 70MH so the Heavy should help out.

I take mine to Long Fin..again, supporting the local guys..cause I buy most of my rods and reels from them. 8-)

Fixed it for you.
I went through this crap with my local BPS. If the local retailer isn't going to offer an over-the-counter replacement, there's no reason for me to buy a Shimano rod over any of the other brands. Once you take that replacement warranty away, there are other rods I prefer in the same price ranges as the Compre and Crucial...and there's no shortage of comparable rods in the Cumara's price range as well.
I do not see this as Shimano problem. What happens when they decide not to honor warranty on your favorite brand of rods?
I am sure they have to send back rods that are damaged during shipping to their store. It would cost them nothing to send one more rod back.
Its called customer service. Or in this case, a disservice to the customer.
I also have this rod and no what you mean hah But I have heard that you can send any Shimano rod in with a note that says you let your dog chew it up on purpose an they will still replace it for free no questions asked! Isn't Shimano great!?

Another success story and why I always recommend Shimano rods... 8-)
