Dobyns Fury 735C 2025

Would the dobyns Fury 735C be to heavy of a rod to pitch primarily 3/8oz jigs? I heard their rods run a power lighter.

I have some Champion series 735c and 734c rods. The 734c is my preferred jig rod because it's strong but has some tip, and the 735c I use primarily for hollow body frogs, buzzbaits, and 130 Whopper Ploppers because it's stout enough to set a big frog hook from a good distance away and pull in a fish through weeds. The 5 is a bit too stout for jigs in my opinion, at least with braid line. In fact, today I was jig fishing with the 734c and for about 2 ecstatic minutes I thought I had a 15+ pound LM bass on the line. ("Please be a bass, please be a bass!," I kept saying.) Turns out it was a big old Florida soft shell snapping turtle. I'm glad I got the hook out without getting my finger bit off. Anyway, the 734c set the hook through some awfully tough turtle tissue and handled the ensuing wrestling match very well. My reel was spooled with #40 braid.

735 is definitely a bit too heavy for 3/8 oz jigs, it's better as a frogging stick. Stay with the 734c and you'll do just fine.

Pretty much the same rod as the 734c. I just prefer longer rods for the better casting distance and slightly better leverage when playing a fish.

Would the 704c be ok to pitch 1/8 and 1/4 Texas rigs as well?

The 734 sounds like the rod you need. I've got a Savvy 704 and it's too heavy for 1/8. If you are looking for a pitching rod, go with the 734, the taper is a bit faster, and the added length will help you with pitching and setting the hook.

I don't know how one can say the 735 is too much rod 3/8oz jig but it's fine throwing frogs. A 3/8oz jig after you add the hook + trailer is closer to 1/2oz which is the same weight as your average frog.....You're pitching a jig /w this rod. I'm going to assume(maybe a bad idea) you're throwing it into cover. I've used the 735 for years. It pitches, casts, skips 3/8oz anything easily and well.
As for 1/8oz-1/4oz trigs, get a 3 power.

Personal preference. The 735 is a bit too heavy for me, I prefer something a bit lighter to throw jigs. After all, Dobyns recommends a 4 power rod (744) as their "jig special" anyway.

I'm starting to wonder if some 735 Furys were mismarked from the factory. I read someone saying it was as soft as another brands M. @iabass8 I'm telling you the one I own is stiff beyond belief it feels 2 powers higher than the 734 Fury. It's nothing anywheres close to the champ 735 entirely different animal. When I get some time I gotta text you a vid comparing the tips. That didn't sound right at all lmaoooo ???

Correct. However, what you need to understand that not all 3/4/5 power rods are identical through a series and the differene between the 734 and 744 "jig" rod within in the champ series isn't just 1 inch. The champ 744 is "more rod" than the traditonal 734. It's a different rod all together even being the same power. IE. The 735 is a great frog rod. The 795 is one of the finest punch rods and probably their most popular punch rod they make. Both are 5 powers. the 795 can punch a 2oz weight+bait. The 735 is over powered /w a 1 1/4oz weight + bait. The DX702 fishes completely different than the 742.

I suppose it's possible. They do sell cheaper mislabeled rods on their website. It is a mass produced 100$ rod. I'm sure there's some goof ups out there. You could have a blunder of a rod. My champ 735 and savvy 735 aren't that different action wise. I can't tell a difference action wise between the savvy and fury 735.
Stiff to you is normal to others. You'd probably throw a roman made on DS rod if you could.

Not once did I indicate that all rods within the same power are the same action. Each Dobyns rod fishes slightly different than each other, even if they are of the same model. As @dam0007 pointed out, it's near impossible for a highly produced rod to be equal to every other one. I have fished both the 734 champion and a 744 champion, and in my opinion, the 744 champion isn't "much more" of a rod, the power is just about the same, but it has a much faster tip.

In my opinion the 734 is a more versatile rod than the 735. The Champ 734c can do pretty much anything in bass fishing besides heavy punching or the lightest finesse applications.

Do yo think that the Fury 735 could throw chatterbaits and spinnerbaits fairly efficiently? I need a frog rod and a rod that i can throw heavier jigs (1/2-3/4 oz) and swim jigs which is why I think the 735 would be the best fit for those techniques, but I'd like to be able to throw 3/8-3/4 oz spinnerbaits and chatterbaits too.. I know that a 734 would be a better fit though.. How much stiffer is the tip and action is the 735 than the 734? Also, on a scale of 1-10 how good of a frog rod would a 734 be? We'll put the 735 as a 10 on the scale as to how good of a frog rod the 735 is.

Yes, while not ideal, the 735 will throw those.
the 735 is xf vs the 734 is a fast tip. The 735 shuts off quicker and has more backbone .
The 734 would be a 9 for open water frogging and a 6 if fished in cover. I would rather use the 765 or 805 in cover.

The 735 is a Mag Heavy. I assume that's what you mean by it being an extra fast and hits the backbone quicker..? So you truly believe that the 734 is a 9/10 for open water frogging if we say the 735 is a 10/10? Fascinating.. Hmmmm, I also have a 6'8 MH/F Fenwick Aetos. I'm just trying to fill 1 power slot heavier by getting the 734 or 735.. I don't do anything flipping or pitching being that I fish from shore.. Well, if the 734 would hold up to frogging, which I do mostly open water frogging, and it fits the bill better for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swim jigs, and heavier jigs then I'd probably roll with a 734.. What lb braid would you spool? Would you spool 65 lb on the 734? I'd tie a fluoro leader when need be. How is the tip on the 734? I know that's a broad/tough question to ask, but your best short description would be appreciated. Thanks man. BTW, I'm from Ames, IA. Where are you from?

I haven't used the Fury 735, but I have a pair of the Champ 735 and Champ Extreme 745. I prefer the 5-power for tossing jigs and worms.
As far as the actions go, the Champion 734 is a bit slower/softer than any of the above-mentioned rods. I feel it's better suited for moving baits like 3/8-3/4 oz spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, bladed jigs, topwater walkers, and large squarebills. It's my favorite rod for those. I didn't particularly like it for jigs and worms. It's just a little bit too soft in the tip for jigging, especially if you're fishing around a lot of weeds, like in MN lakes.

I just got a 745 Dobyn's tonight and was throwing a 3/8oz jigs on it. It's definitely not too stiff.

That might have a different action. Ive got a dx745 (non-HP). I think the 735 might be a bit faster, as the fury is designed to be a frog rod.
But either way, i have full trust in the staff nd developers at Dobyn's to make the right rods.
