Anyone Know Who Makes This Reel? 2025

I saw this reel in gander mountain and played around with it for a little bit. I really liked the feel of it and almost bought it. I know that Quantum has made reels for gander in the past, and I'm not sure if this one is a quantum, because it doesn't really "look" like a quantum. I looked on the box and through all of the paperwork on the inside and couldn't find a make. To me the exterior looked like a pflueger, but there were differences on with the line guide and interior braking that differed from the pfluegers that I saw in store. I wanna give this reel a shot but if its made by quantum... well let's say I've been there, done that, and wished I hadn't.

That's a Banax reel. Same company that makes quantums, okumas, ***, etc.

Never knew those brands were made by the same company. So does this tell me anything about the reel? Should I avoid it?

I've never owned a banax made reel so I couldn't tell you. I hear mixed reviews though.

I'm sure those off-shore reel companies that make reels for large US companies are capable of making quality reels. I would take each reel on it's own merit and not worry too much about where it came from.

They cast very well too. I own Both A & Cs. They feel very similar to my Cores with the release bar sitting lower on the body.

Some reel servicers won't work on off-brand reels, and down the road parts may be hard to find for them. Having said that, and now only buying Shimano or Daiwa, I have had some off brand reels that were quite good.

Just buy a round abu made sweden no guessing i have about 70 and all i like to know is what centuary or decade they were made lol .And whats even neater is i can take parts from a reel made in 1960 and put them a reel made in 2010. Fun fun

It doesn´t tell you much other than being a 80 dollar reel with about the same quality of other reels built by the same company for other brands, now if you ask me for less money I would get me a Daiwa Lexa without thinking it even a little bit.

So you are saying Quantum has their own manufacturing facility and do their own r & d? Like shimano and daiwa but In Korea?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. They have their own unique drag system and brake system, nothing around that was close and even the frames are different. The Smoke reel was an all aluminum reel under 7oz, and both the handle and palm side plates were aluminum, not many were made like that except for my Abu Garcia 2nd Gen Premier. So even if you hate Quantum, it really doesn't matter as they do have their own facility that produces nothing but Quantum unlike the Banax , and I believer there are two others that produce reels for a bunch of different companies.

They may have a contract with the manufacturing company that only allows them to use certain technologies( like the external braking or the new short spool shaft, or flipping switch, etc..) within the umbrella(which may explain why the other companies don't have externally adjustable centrifugal brakes and more than likely wont have them until the agreement or contract expires for that particular tech) of companies using the manufacturer. Like *** I'm sure they have a lot of control in certain design elements etc.

I don't know how it works but when B.A.S.S. was owned by ESPN, there was a show on the one Saturday morning and Tommy Sanders was touring the Quantum Facility . They said that they do all their own R&D, design, testing and manufacturing while other use existing manufacturers to produce reels. As I said, I'm not sure how that works but I saw that show and everything in that plant, and it looked like a plant, had Quantum logos all over.

That must have been a long time ago because I've heard there were quantums from way back that were made in Japan by ryobi. But by looking at the links of the 2 reels I posted you can't deny those are twins to a couple of quantum reels sold here.

Yup, Quantum reels were made in Japan, the last reels I bought from lews ( which were owned by quantum or Zebco, Tulsa.. Was in 98. I quit using the bb1n reels around 2002 & made bank selling my many lews..

I fish with Quantums and the 13 concepts. My buddies fish with Shimano and Diawa. Used to fish with Diawa.....yeah they have a service department that is close and so does Shimano. My friends have their reels in there often, have bering issues. But their service is top quality for the most part. I have no idea about Quantum or ***'s service since their reels have never had to be sent off to be serviced which was the reason I moved away from fishing Diawa. I'd rather have quality equipment at affordable prices (within that $150-$250 range) that holds up and doesn't need to be sent in. Diawa and Shimano have been around for years, have brand power which makes them so popular. People associate Quantum with Zebco from the old days. Sorry the EXO's and Tour MG's are not a Zebco 33 of the past. Even Shimano and Diawa make cheap model equipment and if I were to base my opinion on some of that crap it would not be fair to their quality upper equipment. Was another one that was hesitant about 13 fishings Concept reels. Well have the A's and C's, all are quality reels and well built and hold up extremely well. Of course this is only my opinion and experiences, but I'm not going to be going back to Diawa anytime soon nor pick up a Shimano because "they are the top shelf". That's just someone elses opinion just as I have mine.

Shimanos with bearing problems? I have Shimano baitcasters 15 years old with original parts and bearings. They cast like the day they came out of the box.

The only bearings I've ever had go bad were in shimano reels.

Any mechanical part can fail on any branded reel. Bearings are cheap & a easy fix. Never had a bearing fail in 30 years.. I've used Diawa & Shimano.. It does happen, I guess.
