I recently had some issues with my BPS Johnny Morris not engaging the spool after casting. I figured that it just needs to be cleaned and greased because I did drop in the lake a few months ago.
I took it apart to discover several pieces of broken plastic inside. One of them was one of the posts that hold the U shaped piece that holds the pinion gear (explains why the spool wouldn't engage). Why would a reel of this price range use plastic for such a critical part?

they use plastic in a lot of places it all depends on the kind of plastic usedi have garcia reels with plastic been going along good for 20 yrs ,There are diff qualities of plastic most reels need it in places so other things mesh right and/or to stop other parts from wearing down Reel mechanic can give you more insight

No, I have had it for too long to still be under warranty. I am thinking of getting a Shimano Curado as a replacement.

Take that bad boy out to your favorite hot spot, find a good clear spot on that bank, lay that thing down and set it afire. This will please the BASS gods. Then go right out and get that Shimano® you know you should have gotten the first time.
Come back to that spot, catch the first bass of the day on that reel right there........

I concur on the curado! I bought a bps reel took it back 2 weeks later and bought a curado! I now on my 3rd Curado 1 e5 2 e7 soon to be a 3rd e7!

first of all you should blame yourself.it should have been cleaned and lubed immediately after the dunking.to go on using it without service is foolish.it's like driving a car with no oil in the engine and then blaming the manufacturer when it seizes.the plastic parts are usually designed to break instead of something else.a lot of times they are like fuses in an electrical system.suck it up and send it in for repair.

If the reel was lubed and oiled properly, a freshwater rinse would be all it takes. They are reels, they are meant to get wet. Do you actually believe the saltwater guys disassemble their reels after rinsing the salt off their gear every time they fish? A dunking rarely causes catastrophic failure, like detailed above. A fishing reel bears very little resemblance to an auto. I actually think it took an impact before the dunking. Take it back to BPS, and explain the situation, and see what they can do.

It's a good reel. If you bail on it to get the Curado, sell it to someone here for cheap as I'm sure they'd pay to have it fixed.

Ok, I misread what he said. I didn't see the "posts" part. Was assuming the "U" part broke.
Ok, I agree. Buy the Curado.
No wait, are you sure those posts are plastic on the JM? They are metal on the Revo and the JM is very close.
At any rate, if you want the best build quality, skip the JM, Revo and Curado and get a Zillion. They are built like swiss watches. And they are beefy inside.

Hmmm...we have an entire forum dedicated to Shimano support, but no where to ask about BPS reels? I think you guys are being a little tough. Apparently you never had a reel break on you. I realize its a private label reel, but its their best reel for crying out loud, and not inexpensive, at that.

The Shimano forum actually has a Shimano reel mechanic that posts there.

BigE take the reel back to Bass Pro. A lot of times it doesn't matter if it is out of warranty. My buddy had a Rick Clunn reel that he had for probably 3 years. He went to BPS and started talking to one of the guys at the reel counter and they just exchanged it for a brand new one, no questions asked.

Dunking a reel will not cause the yoke posts to break off. To use your auto analogy, that would be like having both rear struts break in half after driving through a puddle.
Yes, sometimes reels get messed up after a dunking, but that usually involves sediment getting in the reel, or an extended soak in zebra mussel water. It only takes about a half hour for them to start growing in the crevices. You would know, almost immediately that something was wrong, this is from personal experience.
I really think something else went wrong here, and we're not hearing the whole story.
Just two days ago, I purposely dunked my reel to wash off all the cottonwood seeds (white fuzzy crap) and green slop that had accumulated in the line guide. Nothing bad happened to that reel, and its nothing special.

JF is right here. Dunking the reel wouldn't have caused the pinion yoke post the sheer.
The frame (set plate) is centrificale molded and the post that sheered is part of that mold. The reel could have had the issue from the first right out of the box (cracked at the base from manufacturing), have seen it even on graphite Shimano® BC's from the past.
Now for info on the reel, the warranty and service center for BPS is OutDoor World Rod & Reel Repair.
