I'm thinking of doing this to my Chronarch 50E.  I believe DarrenM has them on his.  He posted about it, do a search.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I have the 51e.  I see nothing wrong with the stock bearings.  I cleaned mine and relubed.  The reel will cast a mile and feels awesome.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

A famous man once said, my reel should seen and not heard! I agree with that statement and IMHO, you should stick with your cleaned and lightly oiled stock bearings vs loud ceramics.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

If bearings are toast, Boca Abec 5 ceramics but like I said, the stock bearings on  this reel are great as is.

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

Like some have mentioned already, stock bearings flushed and lightly oiled. The only upgrade I did on my 50E was a HawgTech handle and cabontex washers. Nice difference.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

What do you hope to gain by changing bearings?

I have a Curado 50E with Boca Orange Bearings and compared that reel to my Curado 200E5 and E7 reels.  The DVT Supertuned reels to me, is about 10ft. less.  The Bocas do give me more precision when I use my 50E for flipping.

fishing user avatarPinoy_Basser reply :

For normal everyday fishing (Stock Reel): Flushed Bearings are more than enough.

If Need replacing: Boca (abec 5 or 7) will be great.

If you are planning to convert it to a Bait Finesse reel: Look at Hedgehog Air Bearings (+shallow spools).

If you are a Reel Junkie and loves to pimp reels: Look at Japanese sites like, Hedgehog, Baka-rush, ZPI, KTF etc

hawgtechs are good for the money , but in my scorpion 1001xt i ended up going back and forth between stock and hawgtechs  and i ended up keeping the stock bearings that are flushed and propely lubed , theres really not a noticeable difference in casting between the 2 but the ceramics are louder which i just wasn't a fan of. hawgtechs are cheap enough and there a great company  so i'd say buy them and test out yourself but don't expect any magic

Boca bearings

Hedgehog airs

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

I know people are suggesting a flushing the stock bearing bUT my opinion is if you're thinking about it, go for it. My punch and jig reels have flush bearings because I put money into drags and longer handle. My light pitching, senko, trig, crank, and shakey head all have Hedgehog or Boca bearings.

I think the $30ish is well worth it. Expect only around 5 yards of distance increase, give or take another 5ish. However the accuracy is improved and the effort needed to get the same distance is improved. Pitching soft plastic is one thing I see benefits of going with after market bearings. That's my opinion and I'm sure others will have theirs but as an enthusiast you'll spend money on little improvements. Whether it's worth it, that is up to only you. To me it's definitely worth it.

fishing user avatarJeziHogg reply :

I'd recommend the hedgehog air aswell they make 3 different types. Depending on how finesse you want to go.

fishing user avatarBdjr1 reply :

1/8 oz,

What do u use to flush/clean the bearing

fishing user avatarJeziHogg reply :

For 1/8oz I'd recommend the Kattobi Air BFS bearings. You can let the bearing sit in a glass full of acetone over night to clean it.

fishing user avatarBdjr1 reply :

What is the size of the bearing?

3mmx10mmx4mm is that right

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

If you're buying after market bearings no need to flush them. Stock bearings are greased from the factory. Most people that buys reel doesn't do maintenance so they add grease because it last a lot longer. When you flush the bearings, you are removing the grease. After that you can add oil to quite and smooth them out but there will be no more grease. So that means you will need to add a drop of grease ever so often, depending on how much you use your reels.

If you're looking for the Hedgehogs here it is.

Yep I bought a couple of sets of Hedgehogs and they came with a note saying there is no need to flush and came pre oiled. Just install and go.

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

Those HH bearings already have the Alchemy oil in them. They're good to go. I think bocas come dry and optional if you want to oil or not bUT don't quote me on that part. Not 100% sure. Still won't need to flush them either.

There are several chemicals people use, don't mix chemicals.

Acetone, and aerosol Brake Cleaner are the two that I use, and an Ultra Sonic Cleaner, and then blow out with compressed air.

My Grandfather used to say "little pitchers should be seen and not heard" - I like it.....

Regarding bearing upgrade, I've sent my reels to Mike @ DVT and let him decide based on the condition of what I send him.

Good luck with your choice.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

Thanks for the post Bdjr1, after seeing all of the recommendation and advice.  I decided to flush my bearings last night and give the my Chronarch 200E6 and 50E some cleaning.  They were next on my list anyway.  After doing this, it was performing really well.  I'm now in the camp that the stock bearings are fine!  I'm going to turn my attention to my other reels (Citicas and BPS Extreme reels).

fishing user avatarJaheff reply :

Another cheap suggestion is to get some TSI oil. I got 321 (so I don't have to worry about plastics). Great stuff!

fishing user avatarBdjr1 reply :

Anyone use the Boca LBT Lighting Lube
