fishing user avatarWiregrassRiverRat reply :

I am the WORST person at making decisions... my own wife hates taking me to restaurants because it takes me too long to decide on food.. so I was ready to order my 3 dobyns rods.. till I got to the option of spinning reel... Full handle... Split grip.... Oh boy... what to do??? lol..

fishing user avatarlivetofish28 reply :

I like split grip for spinning rods honestly. I have the dx 702 split grip and it's awesome

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

I like split grips on everything.

fishing user avatartbone1993 reply :

Split grips for either, full handle baitcaster only.

but you do full grips on the 73 champ and 74 champ ex casting correct? I have heard they balance better.. I havent had access to two in the same series.. to try that out!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

For spinning rods, I don't care so much about the split rear or full, it's all about how the three fingers in front of the reel feel.

Ha I do prefer full grips on baitcasters. Now I do have some split grips but that was when I thought lighter was better. Since then, if given a choice, I go full grip. The balance is better for me and I prefer the feel.

I think if I go under 7'3 I will go split .. over I will go with full.. just heard that is the balancing point.. heck If I really like the fulls I may stay with the fulls

fishing user avatarbflp3 reply :

I like the split grips for everything. I feel I get a better grip on the rod for harder flinging ability.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

My eyes see the difference between a split-grip and a one-piece grip, but my hand has no idea.

As for the Dobyns idea, I'd stick with that.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

I almost went all Dobyns till I fished a 13 now I'm going all 13 minus my Dobyns I already own for shallow cranking.

fishing user avatarArv reply :

It's personal preference. I prefer a full handle but wouldn't think twice about a split grip.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

Personally I like the split grips. They lighten up the rod a little and offer more consistent casting. For those concerned with balance points on spinning rods, this shouldn't be as much of an issue do to the heavier nature of a spinning reel. When it all comes down to it though, it's all a personal preference.

fishing user avatarAlpha Male reply :

I was a hardened FULL GRIP ONLY type guy until this winter. I pulled out my rods from the garage and brought them in the house and the wife said that she didnt want "those dirty fishing poles in the house". So i swiffered them and really noticed that cork on my avids was perfectly clean between the handle and the butt. So i started looking at some of the rods with split grips and I havent looked back.

The grip or reel seat?

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

I disliked both the grip and reel seat on the ***. As far as rating and sensitivity they were outstanding, just the handle wasn't right for me. Same reason why I didn't like the tatula, it's preference

I have small hands and it didnt bother me at first .. but after 3-4 hours.. I felt my hand was drained..

fishing user avatarLucky Craft Man reply :

I am not a split grip fan at all.  I just find that full rear grips balance better and to me a balanced rod is better than a tip heavy rod that might be lighter in weight overall.  I have several NRX split grips that I noninvasively make a full grip and then I add weight to the butt section to balance.  I think they perform so much better that way.  Good luck in your decision.

fishing user avatarBostonMahhk reply :

I think it just comes down to what feels more comfortable to you that's all. I bought a dx704c from dobyns and when I got it I was amazed. It's the lightest, most sensitive rod I've fished with. I paired it with a revo mgx and it feels like your holding air. I'm amazed at how light it is. So the dicks near my house got the st. Croix Legend Tournaments in and I had to have one. I bought it, took it home and was really disappointed. After comparing the two rods I couldn't believe how heavy and unbalanced the LT was compared to the DX. I was extremely let down because I loved the rod. However, my plan for the LT was to use it as a flippin/pitchin stick and there was no way I wouldn't feel the affects of the weight after an hours worth of flippin', maybe less. I tried justifying it any way that I could because I was excited about the LT but for $270 I just couldn't keep it. I went back, returned it, and came home and called Miranda at Dobyns to put an order in for a Champion rod. If I never picked up a Dobyns then I would've thought that LT was the best rod on the market. I know the St. Croix's are built to be a very strong and reliable rod. I don't doubt or question that for a single second. I guess it's just my preference and I don't know what it is exactly about St. Croix rods not feeling right to me but I know I've tried to make them work. This is my 3rd one that I've purchased and brought back. I know it's def A LOT heavier than the DX and I know they're not balanced nearly as well. I'm sure there's an explainable reason for it seeing as how St. Croix has all those new features incorporated into the construction of the rod. I know this was a long explanation but I hope you got my main point of it and that was to BUY WHAT FEELS RIGHT TO YOU cause sometimes just paying $300 for a rod doesn't mean it's gonna come with the features you want.

I just want to say that in no way was this meant to downgrade St. Croix in any way whatsoever. I think St. Croix is one of the best companies on the market and their products are some of the best out there, if not the best.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

full grips for me on everything....... I have one split grip and dont like it, which sucks cause it is on a 742dx which is one of my favorite rods.

split grips to me just dont feel right. If you are a split grip guy then as soon as you touch it you will love it... if you have to think after touching it, stick to full handle.

fishing user avatarWiregrassRiverRat reply :

Went with the full handle.. just not any extra benefit of a split grip.. and dobyns cork is sexy.. so its a full all the way
