fishing user avatarjoshmb1999 reply :

I just got a revo stx and have $150 to spend on a rod to put my new reel on.  What would you get if you were me?

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

Team All Star Platinum.

fishing user avatarbassrogue reply :

Depending on the rod power/action/length you want...........

My pick: St Croix Avid AC66MHF  $136 at www.reedssports.com

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Shimano Crucial....$130-$140.

fishing user avatarsurfer reply :

I like my Shimano Crucial, but i havent tried any other rods to say its the best.

fishing user avatarlubina reply :

E21, not a comparison to anything else like that......lighter than the Steez.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

All Star Platinum

fishing user avatarDaHorns reply :

I'd either go with the Falcon Cara (If you have an Academy Sports & Outdoors near you they are on clearance for under $100.00) or even the Falcon Lowrider.  I picked up 2 Cara's this past week 1-6'6" MH and 1-6'9" Medium "Weightless Worm Special", both were $99.88/each.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Check all your local retailers, some of our guys are still picking off Avids for less than $100.

8-)

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

A timely thread for me. I've been thinking the Crucial is a safe bet, but been wondering what else is competitive in the $150 range. I've seen mixed reviews on the GL2. Leon

fishing user avatarjoshmb1999 reply :

thanks guys and please keep the picks coming.  this is exactly what i wanted to get from this thread - i wasn't even sure what all of my choices were in this price range so now I can start my research.  all opinions are welcome!!

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Lightest most sensitive rod on the market for $150 is an E21 Carrot Stix. Its an absolute steal. :o

fishing user avatarChad. reply :

I'd say the crucials.

fishing user avatarChris at Tech reply :

Save another $20 and get a Dobyns Champion...

fishing user avatarjoshmb1999 reply :

my local dicks still have some of the older avids for $99.  Should I go that route?  What does everybody think?

fishing user avatarfranklinfishfinder reply :

That is a good deal. I might have to drive over to dicks and see if they have any over in ashville for under $100.

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

$170 Get a Dobyns or Powell

$150 E21 Carrot Stix or Gblanks custom rod

$150-$180 Used Gloomis IMX rod

Call the Sportsmans warehouse in Roanoke and see if they have any Loomis IMX or St Croix Legends marked down. If not, have them do a chain inventory search to see what is left out there. I got my MBR IMX rod for $150 and an SJR rod for $120. I heard others got different rod marked down too. I also got free shipping on my deeply discounted Fuegos mailed in, from 3 states away...right to my doorstep. I know the local SW still had the MBR rod marked down along with Avids and Legends. I see your in NC, but if the TN or SC store is closer, you could try either of them. I ended up having the store in Fargo ND do the search for me, becouse the 2 closer stores were not much help, if nothing else, try the Fargo store.

Yes. I think the Avid is compariable to the crucial or better. But that Loomis IMX that Pfluemis mentioned is a better rod still.

fishing user avatarShadcranker reply :

Crucial, Avid on sale, or E21 Stix

Brokejew, this looks like a good summary to me.  I like Powells but the few people on these forums who have tried the Dobyns rods say they are a step up from the Powell.  As you can see from all the posts, there are a lot of good rods in this price range.

Burley picked a new Cumara at one of our local shops last week for I believe it was $159, that is their regular price, and they have everything 10% off right nowl.

I'd be all over that if I could find one.  I saw Burley's post about that rod and that thing is SWEET!!!  What local shop was it that he got it from?  Could I call in an order and have it shipped to me?

fishing user avatarJigNBig reply :

E21 Carrot Stix! An STX would look good but this looks better:

:) ;D :o

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Team Daiwa Light-and-Tough $130

To get an honest and objective opinion of a rod I compare them two at a time.

As one blank is eliminated, I'll add another candidate to make the new pair.

The only way to obliterate brand loyality (the enemy) is not knowing which brand is in which hand.

(I usually ask my wife to hand me the rod, and if necessary I'll close my eyes momentarily)

That said, I've yet to experience a rod for $130 with better feel and backbone than the Team Daiwa Light-and-Tough (I own a slew)

Roger

It is M&M Sporting Goods in Kingsport, TN.  I don't believe they have a website but you should be able to buy and get one shipped over the phone.
