Need a new...great....reel cheap? 2025

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

I ordered my first Pinnacle Primmus from manventureoutpost.  They do charge shipping, but price was still very good....about $155 for a $225 reel (at TW).  The Primmus is now $104.10 and the Helios Air is $156.25 ($250 at TW).  Man!!!  Don't need any more reels, but couldn't pass on these prices.  Ordered 2 more Primmus and another Helios Air before posting here.....just in case you hogs wouldn't leave any for me.      Shipping $12.99.  I love these 2 reels, and brought them to Florida with me yesterday.

For those not in the know, the Primmus comes factory tuned.  Super smooth out of the box.  Very nice looking reel. The Helios Air comes with upgraded bearings.  Both are very light at 5.9 and 5.7 oz. respectively.  Both can reach out there quite aways.  I am one very happy camper.  Will have to order a couple rods from them next month.  :)

EDIT  I think I could safely say the Primmus is the best $110 reel (with shipping) that you can buy.

4-1/2 stars and 8.6 out of 10 rating.  I originally was looking at Wholesale Hunter, but when I checked them out on resellerrating I decided not to take a chance.  Turned out to be a better price at manventureoutpost and they have a much better rating so I am glad I held off.  I had no problem when I bought my first Primmus from them.

Hmmmmm.  I assume you originally were going to knock the reels, and then thought better of it.  The Helios Air is a recent acquisition and I've only had it out twice.  However, I was impressed with it from the very first cast.  The Primmus I bought last spring and it made the trip to Florida with me last year.  I like these 2 reels enough that reels such as Curado 51E, T3 1016, Lews TP, Chronarch 100B, Tatula Type R, etc. stayed at home.....and I like all those reels.  Only keep 4 b/c rods here, so I'm limited on the number of reels to bring with me although I usually bring a couple extra.

No, I was going to say you and I have a different opinion of "cheap" but I thought better of it. :) That's all. Have a good one.

LOL.  Well $104 plus about $5 for shipping is "cheap" for a $225 reel.  It is about $100 off on the Helios Air.  But, yeah, I know what you mean.  Spent about $145 each on my first 2 b/c reels.  Closeout.  Regular price $230.  Was 3 or 4 times more than I had ever spent on any kind of rod or reel.  Can you say "heart palpitations"?    It gets easier to want to spend more once you start using better gear.  Doesn't get easier to come up with the money, tho.  :D  I still have a hard time spending over $100 on a rod.  Closeouts are my friend.

Yeah, after I typed it, I realized that was pretty cheap and you generally get what you pay for. I would have deleted it, but you can't so I changed it to NM. I have a couple reels worth more than $100 that I didn't pay that much for. And I have a Falcon Lowrider rod I paid $50 for. So I get you.

fishing user avatarJaheff reply :

I can attest for the Helios Air.. Its a really good reel and i paid 209 for mine. My only knock on Okuma fresh water reels, is they are way over greased and in wrong places, brake race, inside pinion gear..etc. Once cleaned out, the Air is still going strong after two years.

Thanks.  I never knew you could do this.  I tried to find it at that price without using your link.  I couldn't.

I'm also looking at getting a Helios casting rod.  One place on manventureoutpost shows it $135, another $120.  Maybe it is even cheaper using your method.  Care to explain how to a guy who isn't the greatest with a computer?  Thanks.

fishing user avatarPoprockz reply :

Fair is fair.  You have cost me money.    I think you will like the reel.  Let me know your thoughts on it.  You are more knowledgeable than I.

Heading out for the first time early tomorrow morning.  Glad I've got my PA winter coat.  Today was the first day with no rain, but cold.  Am not expecting a lot even though we are going to a lake that barely gets fished.  Should warm up fairly quickly.

Water level been down enough for you to fish?

What model are u looking at for the helios casting rod?

It was $120.21 (at manventureoutpost) but that was without shipping.  Where did you find it at that price shipped?

EDIT:  Hmmmm They want $112.57 plus $3.38 Insurance and handling plus $35.35 for USPS.  Two rods left. I was going to get both. Handling and insurance was $6 something and Shipping a bit over $41.  Went out of stock while I was getting these figures for you.  Must be a couple guys here took advantage of the price while I was waffling.  <_<

That is I was going to get both until I saw the whipping.

fishing user avatarPoprockz reply :

odd, it showed 12 dollar shipping, not sure what happened there!

There are a lot of what I call "casual" anglers that come here and it doesn't take too long before they begin to suffer sticker shock. I mean no offense by it, what I mean is most anglers are casual anglers and usually use a rod and reel combo that cost less than what more serious anglers pay just for a single reel or rod. My neighbor was watching me out in the yard teaching my grandson to cast a casting reel and it was a less expensive set up, a TD Advantage on an Abu Garcia Vendetta, he said that he never seen a combo like that and figured it was probably expensive and I said no, it was one of the cheapest set-ups I own. When he asked how much I said the reel I paid like $125 and the rod was $80, he said in these exact words, "You must be made of money is that is what you consider a cheap rod and reel" , but this guy like to fly RC planes so I think he spends a lot and it lead to a neat discussion. That brings me to my point, you may think it is really strange that a lot of us pay what seems like a lot of money on this sport or hobby, but the truth is that you probably spend a lot of money of something that serious anglers may look at in the same way, fishing is awesome because you can do it on the cheap, in the middle, or on the hig end and accomplish the same thing.

fishing user avatarSilas reply :

I think you guys didn't see the COUPON PRICE.  At checkout there is a box for promotion code or coupon. Type in BLITZ2015 and the price drops from $104 to $98.

(Dale, just saw on weather that cold front came in Florida. Hard fishing now!!)

We all have our priorities where we don't skimp. I like GOOD beer and I've spent $13 on one 12 oz. bottle. I consider myself to be a middle-of-the-pack angler. I have a couple spinning combos in the $70 range, one combo in the $90 range, one in the $110 range and 2 in the $240 range. One would have cost $300 if I hadn't bought used. And I spend more on baits than anyone else I personally know except one guy. He likes good baits and cheap spinning combos.

I have a friend who thinks I waste mega bucks on fishing but he owns a pull-behind camper that cost more than his house and he has a dually to pull it. Says it saves him money on vacations LOL.
