fishing user avatarFunkJishing reply :

the diffrence in the MG and LFS is the MG has a stronger drag by 5lbs and has centrifugal breaks as well as magnetic ones. not much a diffrence, but its probably worth 30 more $

fishing user avatarABW reply :

It was my first baitcaster and is still going strong

Its terrific

Great reels

fishing user avatarBass2124 reply :

I had bought one from dicks for $99 last season and had issues with mine (grinding feel and a loud screech on the cast)  after a few months of using it.   Took it apart and gave it a thorough cleaning and it still works but not as smooth as it was when I bought it. I have never had issues with any of my other bait casting reels in that price range- Pro Qualifier, President, and Tatula like I have had with the Lews. The reviews are awesome on the Lews and maybe I got a lemon, but I will never purchase one again.  After receiving my latest Christmas gift, Shimano Curado i, I am not turning back.  That reel has the most amazing feel, smoothest retrieval, and casting ability of anything I have ever used and for an extra $40 well worth the upgrade.

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

I love my Lew's! They are by far my favorite out of everything I own.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Yep. Love mine.

You just got to set it up before you use it to stop the backlashes.

fishing user avatarChrisWi reply :

Love all four of mine! Great reels. Right now I'm expierimenting with shimanos and like'm. Dont think they'll replace my Lews though. For the money they can not be beat.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

yeah, I have a Tournament Lite SS and love it.  Shimanos have been good to me, but I feel I get a lot more bang for the buck out of a Lew's.

PM coming as well

My thoughts exactly!

fishing user avatarFunkJishing reply :

haha judging by the great reviews here I cant go wrong. it'll be my first reel over 50$ so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. thanks for the info and back-up guys! :D

fishing user avatarjyu87 reply :

I've heard so many great reviews on the Speed Spool that I ordered myself one on a Mojo Bass rod MHF 7'1. I currently have a Abu Garcia Revo STX on a St. Croix LTB. I feel like both are going to be great but I really like the speed spool and it's price point.

fishing user avatarSonik reply :

I love how people buy $200 Curados, Chronarchs, and other reels and then go buy a Lew's LFS or Laser for $99 and under. Then say how bad the Lew's is. Well, I tell you what. I own $200 Lew's Tournament Pros and BB1 Pros. I think I'll go out and buy me a $75 Abu Black Max and a Shimano Caenan and do apples to apples comparison. Then come back here and say "Shimanos and Abu Garcia are junk. They felt like a gravel polisher next to my Pro model Lew's. I'll NEVER buy their products again."

A man aught to have more common sense than to do an apples to apples comparison of any brand's $75 reel to another's $200 reel.

I don't know what reel you are fishing currently, but in another thread DVT commented that once you jump into the 100+ dollar price point the quality takes a rather large jump as well. I imagine you will enjoy the reel, and that this will become a very expensive hobby :eyebrows:

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

It is a great reel but the shimano is a better reel. y can find them on eBay for 100$

Shimano what? Only one I can find for $99 is a Citica.... Which is just a Cauis w/an aluminum frame.... It doesn't have near the features of an LFS model Speed Spool, which is $99 at a base price and can be found for less I'm sure... While the Citca is a $129 base price...

What's funny is I like my $100 Speed Spool better than more expensive reels from other brands!!! :Idontknow:

I have no dog in this fight, but have to agree that comparing a reel listing for $100 to a reel listing for $180 isn't really fair.  I don't care what the final price is.  Obviously if you can get that $180 for $100 then that is the way to go, but reels should be compared at comparable list prices.

I've got a reel I bought new for $30 on closeout (believe list was $80).  It is a fine reel....actually surprisingly good....but I am not going to compare it to a Zillion or Core.  I paid $98 for a new Curado 51E on closeout ($200 list).  Should I compare it to the $99 (list) Lews?

Is the LFS the new version of the SS1?

fishing user avatarsprint286 reply :

the LFS models are outstanding they are more compact than their predecessors and fit better in your hand . smooth and reliable.

fishing user avatarsprint286 reply :

yes the LFS is the new version of the SS1

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I have one of the SS1 Speed Spools that I've put through the ringer and it's still going strong. It's one of the farthest casting stock reels I've ever owned.

fishing user avatarSDbassin reply :

I love my lews reels. I have the tourney pro, team lite, super duty and the team gold spinning reel. Ive found the tourney pro for $145 brand new from some online retailers, and I personally think its well worth the money to make the "step up" to the higher end reels. I absolutely love Lews, Cant go wrong with any Lews reels in my opinion!

fishing user avatarBass fisherman 707 reply :

Worth every penny! I have a Duckett ghost paired up with a Lews speed spool ss1hl and it is easily the lightest combo I own!

Great reels.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I used SS1H all last year and it is solid.  Few not-so-random thoughts...

-Always check Lews website for rebates -- the tourny has a $30 rebate offer right now

-I like the reel, but I wouldn't be looking at them first for next reel -- probably just me, but it was a lot touchier to dial in than I thought it should be

-Can't put my finger on why, but reeling in fish never felt totally right - maybe its the handle...I don't know...it just seemed to feel awkward

-I'll be looking at Pinnacle, Diawa, BPS for my next casting reel if between $90 and $140

-Check TW - pretty sure they've got the 'older' model for cheaper than you're looking at right now

i had a lews tourney pro and a super duty. really like the super duty. the TP initially was great but After a few weeks got to where i was backlashing almost every cast even with the brakes turned up a good bit. i do prefer shimano tho i love my 200E7 and I series

fishing user avatarEmersonFish reply :

I think there is sufficient anecdotal evidence here, and elsewhere, that you should feel confident buying a Lew's product, particularly the SS1. Choporoz is right about watching out for sales, if you have time. I would bet, in Choporoz' case, the reason it felt "awkward" to him at times was the handle knobs, which he alluded to. The reason I believe that is because I have many Lew's reels, and the first thing I do when I get one is change those darn things. To me it makes a world of difference; but maybe I'm picky.

what do you not like about the handles? is it the knobs?

I don't have a problem with the handle itself. It's the knobs I can't stand. But a lot of people really like them, so it's a preference thing. I guess it speaks to how good of a value I think the reels are that at competitive price-points, I buy them knowing that I'm going to change the knobs right away.

Same. It's definitely a performer. I give it two bass thumbs up for a $100 reel! (I got mine for I believe $45 but I still think it's a solid value at $100)
