KK spinning owners: KastKing spinning reel size ? 2024

fishing user avatarGeekFisher reply :

Hi guys and gals,

I just ordered two new KK reels, 1 baitcast and 1 spinning. I ordered the Valiant Eagle, in 2000 size. I read somewhere else that the KK equivalent size to a shimano 2500 would be a 3000. At the time of order, I was under impression that a 3000 KK would be same than a Shimano 3000 and a 2000 would be more or less a 2500. Was my assumption right ? I have a bunch of Sahara 2500FE but they don't sell them anymore and to go to a 6.2:1 ratio (I love to pick up slack fast), you need to go to their 3000HG size which I do not want even if they apparently weight the same. I usually fish with Tuf-Line XP 20lbs braid and from the website spec, the 2000 would hold plenty of it. I had to order from eBay as the regular KK site isn't shipping to their Northern neighbours (note the spelling :D ) The reel will be paired with Medium/fast 7' rods for softplastics (tubes mainly) but I might give it a try on a spinning MH/fast for heavier tubes (3/8 and over)

My actual Sahara 2500FE are 9.2oz

The new model Sahara 2500FI/3000HGFI are 8.8 and 2500 can hold 140yds of 8lbs and the 3000 170yds

My Sahara are binding when it's really hot and sunny outside, a well known Shimano flaw of these reel Gen. Some claim it's the friction ring, other claim it's the bushing deforming under heat and I changed it for a bearing in one of mines and IIRC it never binded. That being said, if I concentrate enough to do it consistently and close the bail by hand, it do not bind so... I think they've all corrected it on the new Gen though !

The KastKing is 8.4 in 2000 size. and 9.6 in 3000 size, 2000 can hold 150yds of 8lbs and 3000 210yds

So now I am wondering:

Did I choose the right size ? Will it compare with the Sahara, or even better, outperform them while being at least 20CAD$ cheaper ?

Thanks,

fishing user avatarislandbass reply :

I think you answered your own question.

2500 Sahara holds 140 yds of 8# test

2000 Eagle holds 150 yds of 8# test

As a former engineer, we know that the real world is not ideal so when applicable and where tolerances aren’t demanding or necessary constraint we find reasonable approximations acceptable.

The difference between the spools is only 10 yds or 30’. If you ask me, it’s close enough and therefore good enough (ie, acceptable).

If that extra 30’ really bothers you, since I’m a “southerner” relative to your location, “I reckon you can cut it off, lol.”

????

I hope you can give a review on the Reel after you’ve used it for a while. I never knew much about KK or looked at their stuff until very recently and I am finding their prices awfully compelling. As of late,  my bait monkey has been trying the Jedi mind trick on me to pull the trigger on a few things.

fishing user avatarGeekFisher reply :

I was more affraid about setup overall balance and casting ability than line capacity. As for the review it will be a full one (yes, including unboxing and general impressions, but not just that)

Since it will likely takes a few Weeks, I might have an hard time doing an honest review this season, as a Canadian my season is coming to an end. Will definitely be using both of them at my last tourney in October if I got them :)

fishing user avatarislandbass reply :

Season wise mine will soon end too. The answers to your questions will definitely be given after some time on the water. I’ll be looking forward to the review.

Don't think it is on the market yet. if it is any were close to the quality of the speed demon pro baitcaster it will be a good reel. I own 1 Sharky II in 3000 size and 2 sharky III in 2000 size. they are all very nice reels.

The handle makes it ugly and kind of badass at the same time... They will cost more than the average KK reel though from what I read.

Looks like the same handle as the new Ike series Abu's.

Handles on spinning reels are the thing I find make or break the reel for me. If I constantly have to check the cap to make sure it is tight the reel loses some of its appeal to me. Kastking got it right with the Sharky III. That direct drive screw in handle is one of my favorite designs. I wish they would use it on more of their models.

My other favorite design is on a reel from a company that will remain nameless. Their creed model has a fantastic handle that I see Lew's has a similar version on their new Custom Speed Spin spinning reel. That reel is on my birthday wish list.

I ordered it, will likely receive it before last season outing. Late October is probably not best time of year to try the so claimed "fastest spinning reel of the world" though ... I usually put on slower reels in October since I can't educate myself to reel way slower lol.

shakyheads are my go to bait when fishing gets tough. trying to catch up with a fish that grabs the bait and swims right at you has always been a problem for me with this lure.

Ksatking has a 10% off coupon on their facebook page for the speed demon spinning reel.

I just bought one at Amazon.

fishing user avatarGeekFisher reply :

Should receive them today :) Can't wait to get my hands on :)

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

got my speed demon spinning reel today.

it is a 2000 series.

Put it on my speed demon pro rod. Loaded it with 10lb braid. Then decided to abuse it a bit in my backyard.

first thing I noticed is how smooth it was. no reel noise or vibration, whatsoever.

next I tied the line to my trailer hitch and commenced in abusing the drag.  It is also butter smooth.

next thing I noticed was how quickly it picked up the line.

I did an unscientific comparison on inches per turn between my sharky III and the speed demon, using a tape measure.

they are both the same size and loaded with the same line.

the sharky III picks up 23 inches per turn.

the Speed Demon picks up 32 inches per turn.

Unfortunately can't hit the water for a couple days.  I plan on putting it to the test ,with some shakyheads,on some fat Kansas bass.

I have heard a lot of people complain about grinding gears and reel noise with Kastking reels. I have not noticed that with my speed demon pro, Sharky III, or this speed demon spinning reel.

2 years ago I bought a Mela II that was questionable. it cost $29.00 and it was definitely a $29.00 reel. I don't think they even make it anymore. it sits in my lessons learned. box of shame for fishing gear.

I have an assasin that get noisy after a lot of use, but all it takes to fix that is, take a cotton swab and put a light coat of reel oil around the centrifugl brake ring.

I have to do the same thing with my pro qualifier.

I received the Royale Legend Elite and the Valiant Eagle. Size 2000 is definitely what I wanted. I have a good feeling with the RLE but not so good with the Valiant Eagle. I Will spool Them and try Them next weekend. The Valiant Eagle got a screw with head damaged will have to look into that with Them.

The new speed demon is basically a Sharky III with a faster gear ratio. both are great reels for the price.

The handle is different on the Speed Demon. I love the Sharky III's direct drive handle, it is my favorite spinning reel ATM

Fished my speed demon spinning reel  against my sharky III reel yesterday.  Fished a shakyhead for 3 hours.

Even though a cold front came through the night before, I managed to catch a dozen fish in the 1 to 2 lb range.

The speed demon feels about the same as my sharky III. The different handle was not that noticeable.

The only noticeable difference to me, was the speed demon picks up a lot of line in a hurry. Which is a good thing when shakyhead fishing.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Caught several up to almost 3 pounds on my Speed Demon combo Friday, felt really nice. The handle looks better in person than it does in pictures, I just hope those screws stay put. I think the reel feels more solid than the Sharky III does. I sure does pick line up in a hurry, I really like that. The rod is very nice but I was sure it would be after having a casting Speed Demon rod.

I caught my first fish on a KK reel. :) The spinning us noisy on retrieves and the BC I tried was really smooth ! Cast easy and few backlashes. Im relatively new to baitcasting so. Backlashes were when casting against wind.

I have not personally had any noise with the sharky III or speed demon spinning reels.

For baitcasters, I personally own a speed demon pro and a couple assasins. if they are setup right, it is actually pretty hard to get much of a backlash.

I tried my Assassin as well this morning ! Little harder to dial in but once done, cast like a champ and weight next to nothing :)

One quirk I have had with the assassins is, occasionally they get a little noisy and i start losing casting distance.

To fix this, take off the sideplate and lightly oil the centrifugal brake ring with a cotton swab coated with reel oil.

Really liking mine. It's noticeably faster than any other spinning reel I own. It's very solid and smooth (unfortunately the only thing I've tested the drag on is a big drum so far). I've used it for a micro finesse jig, shakyhead, and wacky rig and it did all well matched with the 7' shakyhead rod.

I'll fish the Eagle Valiant and the other kk baitcasters today :) Drag on the Valiant is strong, not as smooth as the Shimano's but close enough.

I opened the side but I'm not sure which ring you are talking about ? It's noisier since I set the centrifugal brake for sure !

inside the brass ring of the side plate, is where the brake pads drag, when the spool speed goes too fast.

you can usually see a black ring around the inside where the brakes are dragging. i run a light coat of oil around the inside of this ring about once a month.
