Mother of all backlashes!
Was bank fishing on Sunday and had a couple of rods leaned up against my backpack lying on the slope of the bank behind me. Went to throw a cast and saw my spinning outfit go flying over my head and into the water. D'oh! Fortunately not so far that I couldn't retrieve it. The resulting backlash was so bad that I ended up having to strip and re-spool. Lesson learned!
Pulled that same plan on my yak with 15 lb flouro. It gets expensive if your using costly line...
Look at the bright side,at least you cleaned the spinning rig.

Honestly, I was just happy that I didn't sling it out any further than I did. There is a very steep drop off just about another two feet from where it landed with the tip of the rod hanging just over the edge of the bank. I'd have gone diving after it if I had to!
I love that reel.

Me too. It casts like a dream when it doesn't have an entire other rod and reel on the end of it!
I feel your pain , Just had that happen to me over the weekend.
At least it was only 1/6 th of the reel spool from Walmart's clearance of the yo-zuri line (3 bucks)
I feel your pain
The mother of all backlashes ...... where ? That can barely qualify as a regular one.
Happens to me once every month. I think I will smarten up, until it happens again. For me this means most of the time I have to rip of the line from the spool, since my MOAB is at the point of no return.
Just had this happen to me a few weeks ago. I was extra careful to look behind me as I was casting near some trees while out on the lake. What I forgot to do was make sure that my son, who was sitting right behind me, was also not casting at the same time. Snagged his line and was greeted with a nice whack to the back of the head as his rod slammed into my noggin. The results, as you can see, were not pretty. I gave up and went home - cut it all out and just started over.

Yep, that's about what it looked like once I started trying to pick it out. I gave up after a few minutes and just fished my other rods the remainder of the trip.
Never go with just one baitcaster unless you pack a spare spool!!!!

Full disclosure, what you see there was after about a minute of trying to unpick. With my son laughing at me and my only baitcaster now inoperable, I gave up. Not my proudest fishing moment. It surprised me how much of a pain it was to cut all the line out.

Especially since every nice day we have had so far has been accompanied by hurricane force winds
Wow. You guys use some heavy line! I think I've cut out my line 2 or 3 times. I have spent over an hour removing backlashes that number of times (or more) as well. Was leaning over the reel picking out a backlash for so long one time I had to go to the chiropractor to get my neck adjusted. Needless to say if I had known that was going to happen, I would have cut the line out that time too.
No pictures, tho, but at least one looked like Oklahoma Mike's.

Show us yours.
Let me tell you about the ones I used to get when I was a kid...
...while walking to school barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways...
A couple years ago, I inflicted a walleye trip on myself...one afternoon, the guys on my boat need to make a stop on an island...
I jumped out with a baitcaster rigged for pike to hit a little bay I saw on the way in, sure enough when looked in the water I could see a decent pike cruising the shallows...
I ducked under a branch to get a better line on the fish and snapped off a cast...without noticing the spoon I had on had snagged on the branch...
The backlash I got (50# Braid) made yours look like a backlash starter kit...
I didn't even bother trying to undo it...had the line cut off and the the reel re-spooled ten minutes later.

I've done very similar as I'm sure most have. The worst is when you do it the first trip out after spooling your reel with fresh, new expensive line. ???
Got one of my better backlashes of the year last year on this cast, but I have lots of practice and managed to save the line, the buzzbait was not so lucky.
So, I bought my brother his first casting reel for Christmas (200 size Curado he'll use primarily for striper fishing 3/4-2oz baits on the Chesapeake). He's never used one before and has since ignored every bit of good advice I've given him and bought a Med power Mojo Bass and spooled it with 10lb cheap braid. I cannot wait to see this disaster unfold.
It's bound to happen. It seems I backlash nearly one reel per trip that goes home to respool. And I've been using bait caster reels for 50 years.
I was hoping M.O.A.B. in this thread stood for the Mother Of All Baits...

This pic should be in the fishing meme thread with the caption: "Bought pro qualifier reel...Now he backlashes like a pro."
This guy has you beat:
Try a Diana SL-30-SHV with 300 yards of 20 Lb....
Bass reels got nothing on a heaver backlash when your tossing an 8 ounce sinker and 4 ounces of bait....
Them be professional overspools......
