Hi guys,
This is my first post on here! A very exciting day for me since I've been using the site a lot before this and never being able to contribute. Anyways, I am 15 and jobless and looking for a spinning rod I can chuck some senkos on this summer. Preferably in the 40-60 ish price range, although some slight exceptions could be made. Also, the length and action should be about 6'6-7'0 and med extra fast. Some rods I have been looking at have been the Shimano Sellus, Fenwick Eagle and HMX, Berkley Lightning shock, and some BPS rods. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks, and have a good day

Hello Justin and Welcome to Bass Resource ~
I'd recommend one of the rod & reel combo's that Cabelas offers.
This Pflueger President Spinning Combo is pretty sweet, very reasonably priced and would suit your Senko fishing needs nicely.

You want this model PFLPRES2-70 7ft medium
You said you may be able to make an exception for price. You can get a 6'10" M/XF St. Croix Rage from their factory store for $90. That is a lot of rod for the money.

Powell Diesel 6103MEF.
How would you feel about going 2 inches shorter than 6'6"?
6'4" M-XF Fenwick Aetos, $75:

That was a $180 model before it was discontinued! FFO also has a 6'9" M-XF Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth caster for basically the same price:

Welcome aboard! You'll be on great footing if you stick around here and read all that is available - that's a guarantee! As far as your question goes, A-jay's suggestion is spot on. Buying a combo reduces the cost considerably. If you prefer buying individually, then do consider the President as your reel for sure. Very dependable, cost effective and durable reel.
Also, take a serious look at the Berkley Lightning Shock rods too. You get one for a very reasonable cost on Walmart.com. Just check daily as the price goes up & down, depending on their stock availability. You should be able to find one at around $40.00. A great value, in my opinion.
Consider filling your reel spool with a quality 8# or 10# braid for your main line and attaching a 4', 10# test fluorocarbon leader (learn and use the Alberto knot for your connection!). This will cast your lures very well and serve you wonderfully over this season. (My preference is for Fireline Crystal.)
If you have an Academy nearby, go there and get an Ethos rod.

X2. I used one for senkos til 2 weeks ago when i upgraded to a dobyns champion. Worked very well. The ethos line are pretty good for their price.
Thank you guys for all the help! I am taking everyone's suggestions into consideration. I am liking the president reel idea but I am more of a shimano guy. I like the looks of the Sedona, but I might go with the president.
I thought you were looking for a rod. I didn't realize you needed a reel also.

Thank you for the welcoming! This post has already showed me how much people can help. I have heard some things about the shocks lacking any backbone. I was wondering if this was true?

NO!. I have a whole bunch of Lightning Rod Shocks. They were my "go to" rod for about 2 years while I wondered around in the "woods" between fishing St Croix rods, and my current line up of custom built rods. Other rods over those 2 years have come and gone, but I have kept each and every Shock that I bought, and even still buy them up if I see them on sale. They are a little softer in the tip than many off the shelf fast action rods, but they are made for braid, and this IMHO, is a desirable trait. Honestly..........and this is just IMHO............I don't think you can buy a better rod for fishing reaction baits with braid AT ANY price point less than $150 than these rods. And they ain't too shabby for bottom contact stuff either. I have fished, cashed in, and won several tournaments where the bite was brutally slow and subtle with these rods.......often against people with way way better equipment than me.
not my cup of tea, but my dad catches a lot of pond bass on senkos with a 6'6" medium ugly stick and 8lb mono. Pflueger trions are good budget reels. BPS has the Sedona on sale for $39 right now.

Right now the bass pro bionic blade rods are on sale for $50. I understand where you're coming from I'm also 15 and have to fish on a budget. Most of my rods and reels were aquired on sale or on clearance.?

I know the feeling. Most of my rods are clearance of hand me downs. I will have to look at those bionic blades, thanks for the update!

I saw the sedona's, but they are out of 2500's! If they weren't out of them, there would be one in the mail for me right now.
Also, has anyone tried out the shimano sellus spinning? That is one I've been looking at for awhile. It seems to be a good rod... or so the reviews say.
check out this site. you can get a great combo in your price range. dont be afraid of the reconditioned reels, I have never had an issue with one.

You should consider the Shimano sienna. I have two the 500 and the 2500 and they preform exceptionally well for a $30 reel.
Welcome aboard!
I'll second/third, whatever, the recommendations
for the Lightning Shock rods. They're solid rods for
a good price.
As for Shimano reels, that what I choose. You can
also look on eBay as you can often find significant
discounts on new reels from reputable sellers.
I LOVE my Fenwicks, the Eagle is a fantastic rod for the price. You can find em cheap too! IIRC FFO tackle has some for pretty cheap.
Found em, here is something to look at http://www.ffo-tackle.com/detail.cfm?PassProdId=7280

The fenwick eagle is also one of my top choices! I have a 5'9 eagle gt for panfish and I love the thing. My only problem is the guides getting a little bit indented by the line but it isn't really bad yet.

The shock might end up being my rod of choice. It's nice that it's at wally world!

I have to agree on the H2O Ethos rods. They fish much higher than their price as does the Pfluger President spinning reels.
If you can find a used Lamiglas "Senko Special" it couldn't be more than $100. About as good as you can get and it's made in the US.

That is actually very helpful. I kinda needed something to push me over the edge for this rod and now I might just have to get it. Thank you!
Hello everyone,
Just in case anyone was still interested, I just picked up my rod! Lucky for me, I won an ice fishing tournament this weekend and received enough dough to purchase a... St. Croix Mojo Bass! Well out of my price range of what I thought I was going to be able to get. Just goes to show anything can happen! I am very excited to try it out this spring on some pigs (hopefully ). I also wanted to say thank you to all the contributed, I really do appreciate it! It creates faith that there are regular old real people out there that are willing to help others. Being in highschool you don't see very much kindness... Anyways, thank you to all and I hope this will help someone else in the future as well.
Keep your lines tight and rods flexin'
and also a good day

There is a young man on this site that is now retired. Fishes about 365 1/4 days a year. Uses several Pflueger and Shimano spinning reels. Has mentioned before that each of his Shimano reels have been in for repairs. None of his Pflueger reels have. I realize that there are a lot of Shimano fans on this site. I'm one myself. Just sayin'. However, it is my firm belief you should always buy what interests you the most.
Congratulations on the new rod. Always nice to be able to get more than you were expecting.
Does your Bass Pro have a discount rod rack? They are remodeling all their rods and Ive seen a lot of their rods discounted. I have an old Bionic blade I would suggest. Love those rods for the price
St croix rage.
Alot of good choices already named but also check out the Gander Mountain Vortex rod on sale now for $19.99. usually a $60 rod.

I have the vortex 6'6 med for my walleye jigging rod. I really like it for that purpose. It use to be my wacky rig rod but i wanted something a little heavier action to get the fish out of the thick stuff faster.

I know just what you're saying. I sometimes forget how fortunate my life is and i'm thankful very for the one I have.
Welcome to the forum Justen.
As far as an affordable Senko set up, I'm a Pflueger President fan, and any 6'6" - 7' Medium/Fast or Med-Hvy/Fast spinning rod in your budget that feels good in your hands should do the trick.
