Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon line 2025

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

I got some Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon line tonight in the 12 lb. size. I had really wanted the Berkley Transitions fluorocarbon cause it has the gold color and would be easier to see but they didn't have it at the store (Wal-Mart ::D). Other than that though, is there any significant difference in these two lines?? I haven't use fluorocarbon before and I got some to try to get more sensitivity when I fish jigs and T-rigs. I went ahead and took what they had there cause it's for a new reel I ordered that should be here tomorrow and I want to fish with it this coming Saturday.  I could have waited and got some at a tackle store but I don't think I'll have time between now and then.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Don't make your decision on fluorocarbon by the way Vanish fishes. Worst on the market IMO.

You would be better off staying with your current mono instead of that stuff. It's horrible and there are many on here that will back me up on that statement.

:D

Care to elaborate please?? :)

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Yup, you cannot cast it, it breaks easily, knot strength sucks, and cannot take a beating. If you have not spooled it up take it back. You can thank me later. Doubt it take it to the lake, but carry a spare if you only fish one rod.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

If you spool it up tonight the memory will show you Saturday morning quickly the first thing you won't like about it. Go and search some of the previous threads that have discussed it.

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

WOW!!!  Sounds like I might be dodging a bullet to return this.

My dad got some and uses it and he doesn't seem to have any of these problems but he got the 6 lb. size for a spincast and spinning reel.  I got the heavier line.  He's had several snags that we couldn't hardly snap the line from, it just simply wouldn't break off.  But other than that I haven't paid much attention to how his line is, memory and all.

I haven't used the line yet.  What other type would you suggest??  I'd like to get the fluorocarbon line though.  I've heard that it sinks and is more sensitive with hardly no line stretch and that's what I'm wanting (I think).

fishing user avatarBig Tom reply :

Well, I have had way different experiences with Vanish.  I am not saying these guys are wrong, but you may want to try it and see how you like it.  I have horsed quite a few good fish out of laydowns and such with this stuff and it never broke on me.  Its also all my friend uses and he sees no reason to change.

I have heard and read so many complaints about this stuff so I am sure I am in the minority but it really never gave me any problems.

I hope you didn't spool it yet. You might be better off returning that line and exchanging it for something else.  They ought to call that line poof because that is what the fish will do.

I heard all the bad stories and took them with a grain of salt until I tried it. It was given to me by my brother. No matter how carefully tied my knots (and I'm anal about tying them carefully), Poof kept braking. New line, with no casts made.  That was a hint and a half for me to leave my rig in the car and use my ones. I caught a nice 5.5 lb that even and shudder at the thought of what I would have lost with Vanish. It was 8# test and so weak a blue gill could have broken the line.

Sorry if it scares you, but the risk of losing a hawg on this line is even scarier. Maybe we had a bad batch, but even then, the risk IMHO is not worth taking.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Rooster,

Experiment with different brands.

I use Silver Thread, Vanish, Trileen, Izorline and others.

I have not used the Transition as yet but may do so next summer to see how it performs.

Yo-Zuri Ultra Soft Hybird is excellent so give that one a try, too.

I have had some problems with each but they were mostly my fault by tieing a poor knot or not checking for knicks from time to time.

There are many brands of flouro out there so start your experiments and then decide which line you like the most.  :D

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

Vanish just flat out stunk for me. Trilene 100% is 100x better.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

We have had a lot of discussion about Vanish over the years. Some like it, others hate it. I'm in camp with fishfordollars, but maybe you will have better luck.

::D

fishing user avatarfoul hooked reply :

I've caught a bunch of fish this year using 12# and 14# Vanish. I use Big Game also and find that the memory in the Vanish is no more than the Big Game. The lake I fish is a cement bulkhead lake that has lots of concrete junk on the bottom, it really can chew up line. The Vanish holds up well, it abraids no more than other lines I've used and I've tried just about all of the popular choices. I've also  used BP's XPS flouro line, in my experience it is no better than the Vanish. I've never had a knot fail or a fish break me off using Vanish. I fish at least 3 or 4 days a week, so I've given it a good try.

I may be lucky that I've gotten a good batch, but I have not had the problems others have had. Maybe they have improved the formula.

Glad you are not having problems. Personally I will never own another spool. Too many issues with it for me. Good to see someone can use it though. I just cannot fish it.

fishing user avatarfoul hooked reply :

I'm willing to bet Berkly tinkered with the formula and improved it. I was really leery about trying it after reading bad reviews, but it has worked out fine.

Let me add this though. No line stays on my reels very long. I re spool often. I love fresh line.

fishing user avatarBirdNestBen reply :

dang wish I would have read this post before I spooled up my new reel I just got....... the 12 lb. test for a Revo Stx....

Guess I will try it out since I've already spooled it........ will let you know how it works out..........

fishing user avatarBassinSoldier reply :

I personally have never had any issues with it like many of the others have had.  With that being said, after I got rid of that spool I never bought anymore because the reviews here and elsewhere stunk so bad that I just didn't care to chance it.

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Well I'm gonna return it tomorrow.  I have another post about the reel I was getting this for and if you saw it you'll know that that reel is getting returned as well so I can afford to wait a bit on line now.

I'm going to get the Transitions though instead.  I was told it is just like the Vanish but just gold instead of clear is all.  So I might be returning a bad apple for another one just like it but I'll let you know how it goes.

fishing user avatarMichBassMan reply :

Berkley Vanish is the 2nd worse worse line I have perhaps used in 50 years of fishing. Kinky, excess memory, poor knot strenght, and inconsistent with weak spots. Berkley "Transition" is even worse. And this comes from a guy (me) who used Berkley Trilene lines almost exclusively for 20 yrs. Now beacause of the Vanish and transition lines I no longer trust or use any berkley line.

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Well I bought some of the Transitions today and spooled it up. It's also the first time I've ever used any line heavier than 12 pound test. I got the 14 lb. size.

I fished it for 3 hours but didn't catch any fish. Only had one strike and I missed it. Here's what I know so far about it though.....

I did get an idea how it fishes from the time I spent out today. Using a T-rigged craw or a jig and craw I was able to feel every inch of the bottom contour whereas before with just 12 pound Stren mono I was unable to tell that much detail about it. It's very sensitive stuff. I was feeling every single dent and twig that was on the bottom and was even able to tell the difference between gravely bottom vs. just dragging across a rock. It's super sensitive and I'm thrilled with that part. I can see I'm going to be a fluorocarbon user from now on just from this alone.

It also casted smoothly for me off of my BPS Extreme baitcast reel. I had no issues with that. Smooth long casts and smooth retrieves also. It honestly casts like what I'm used to in the Trilene XL or Stren mono, either one.

And I do like how it is when fishing in the wind, it wasn't nearly as affected by the wind as the mono I used a while back and had a horrible experience with due to wind (that was another post about a month ago). It's a bit heavier than the mono is apparently, it sinks in the water where mono would always float and be pulled along by the breeze.

Knot strenght as well as line strength I can't fully judge until I hook a fish with it. I did get 2 snags using a crankbait though and it didn't break off on me. It held tight the whole time for me to get the lure back and one of those snags was pretty severe. That's not much to go on though. Gonna take a fish on for me to tell how it will be.

Only complaints I have with it are that when tying the improved clinch knot I really had to watch to make sure the knot pulled completely down and was tight. I never had any knots slip or break but I did notice that it would tend to tie somewhat loosely if I didn't watch it and make sure that didn't happen. Also it's fairly noisy when casting it. I could hear it sizzling on the reel as I was throwing that 3/8 oz. jig and craw. I guess that part's not a big deal though.

Now if you guys say there's a better fluoro out there, then I can't wait to see it.  I sort of liked this Transitions but this is my very first experience with fluorocarbon of any kind.  If there's something out there that casts as good or better, has a better ability to tie a knot with, and maybe doesn't make so much noise as it casts, then I'm all ears to hear about it. :D

fishing user avatarBirdNestBen reply :

well had a trip today with the Vanish line 12 lb. test..... I hated it...... birdnests easy..... not smooth casting..... wish I would have never spooled it up....

Been using P line which isn't 100% flurocarbon.... it's a blend, but I like it much better........

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Hmmm.....this was not my experience at all. I was even able to cast mine without having to thumb the reel until just before the lure touched down, just as I was able to do with mono. I have my reel set up the same way as I did with mono, same settings for same lures, just different line now is all. I was even able to cast left handed while throwing a buzzbait which is something I normally never do. I only did that cause it's a right handed reel and I wanted to start cranking as soon as the lure hit water so I swapped hands before the cast instead of after it and then was able to do so. Only had one bird's nest the entire time I was out yesterday and that was my fault for throwing a 1/4 oz. spinnerbait into the wind and not touching the spool with my thumb at all. I did have a couple of very minor overruns where there were 2 or 3 loops of line that came up but that sometimes happens with mono too. All in all I was able to use this line in the same exact way as with the 12 pound mono I previously had on. Just now it's 14 pound and fluoro are the only differences I saw. I give a lot of credit to my reel though, it's just so easy to cast with.  I've never owned one I liked better.

fishing user avatarBig Tom reply :

You had the same experience as me.  Maybe Vanish is just better in Kentucky...lol.

It might even just be Yatesville Lake on Greenbrier Creek making the difference!! :D:)

fishing user avatarBirdNestBen reply :

Yeah I had posted earlier about buying the Vanish line....... I really didn't like it at all........ I've had some problems getting my line broke a few times, and wanted something clear.......

Well, I took the Vanish line back to Dick's Sporting Goods and they exchanged it...... Even though the water is clear where I fish, I decided to give Braid a try.....

I bought Power Pro 30 lb. test for my baitcaster....... didn't have any problem not getting strikes, and it casted much farther and smoother than I expected...... and no break offs......

I am going to stick with mono or flurocarbon on my spinning reel.... but I can't tell you how pleased I am with the Powerpro line.......

since this is the first time with the line, I can't speak of how durable the :D line may be........ I guess time will tell..........

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

just to support you bch, i have power pro (10lb) on my inshore spinning reel, and i change it twice a year.

every three months or so ill string it out across my yard and reverse it.. then respool around july 4th.

fishing is 12 months a year here :D

power pro is the best braid going, bar none.

fishing user avatarBirdNestBen reply :

No doubt it is Kikstand 454........  I've only used it a couple of times but I'm sold on this line......

There are some BIG bass where I fish and I just can't take the chance of another break-off......

suprisingly it casts smoother and farther than I ever expected......

It was easy to spool on my Revo as I have a wiffle spool....... but I don't on my Symetre spinning rod........

I'm thinking of putting it on there as well, but I hear it may spin around on the spool when you hook a fish and not work well....

I looked at that uni to uni knot to connect lines, but looks too tough...

Any other ideas on how to spool it on a spinning reel?????????

Thanks.
