St Croix Avid 7Mf For Jigs? 2025

I am looking to get a "new" rod for fishing jigs.... someone i know has one for sale, it's a St Croix Avid 7'MF casting rod in good shape at a fair price.
I throw 3/8oz jigs with trailers about 75% of the time.... the other 25% split evenly between 1/4 oz jigs and 1/2 oz jigs, again with trailers.
my question is would this rod suit my needs for the type of jig fishing i'm doing here? light and moderate cover being the typical spots for my fishing, not a whole lot of really heavy cover around my fishing spots....
any first hand experience with this rod would be greatly appreciated.

A St Croix medium is equivalent to most other medium-heavy. If you get it for a good price, jump on it. You will like it. The Avid series is the place where St Croix start making really good rods. The rods below Avids are just OK. Avids and above are excellent tools of the trade.

Medium for 1/4oz

From personal experience (I own both M and MH Avids) the MF will handle a 3/8 oz jig with trailer perfectly fine. I prefer it over the MH for that weight setup.

Ok, you guys may be the real live bait monkeys! all of these thoughts have run through my head as well....
He wants $120, but would likely take $110 if not $100.... i may just have to get it and give it a shot... could probably get my money back at that price.

If not your mainstay jig rod, it would be great for plastics in general.

That is a great price for an Avid, and .ghoti. gave excellent advice and is spot on I have said many times the Avid series rod is the best priced rod on the planet!! From the company that builds the rods on the planet,,,,in my opinion,,,,,,

I have owned a number of Avids, they are great rods, you will not be disappointed. As .Ghoti, said, they fish a power up from what they are listed as. ie. M = MH (in most other brands).

It's one of my favorite rods. I had one a few years ago and foolishly sold it. I just picked one up used this spring for $75. The guy had 2 for sale. I thought about buying both.

I have both the Avid M and MH. The M would fish the 1/4 oz. jig fine, and if I did not have the MH, I'd probably fish the 3/8 oz. on it and it would get the job done. I would not throw the 1/2 oz. jig on it. In any case, the Avid M rod is about as versatile a rod as you will find. You will not regret buying it, and at that price, would be crazy not to; assuming it's in good condition.

you guys really make it tough to say no..... i'm looking at some other options for getting a 7" MHXF to do the jig work, but may also bite on this rod and find a place for it in the rotation.... sounds like i'd nearly be foolish not to!

Having used that rod I'd say it depends on where you are throwing the jigs. If you are fishing like a 3/8oz Eakins jig or Arky style and dragging along bottom around sparse cover, yeah, you could do that but I woulbn't fish in moderate cover with that size jig and trailer and not a 1/2oz jig and trailer. While St. Croix rods do fish heavier than their power suggest, it is not a full power under, a medium Avid is not a MH from another company, maybe 1/2 power over, so the Medium Avid would fish like a light medium heavy. I've owned St. Croix rods in the past and I have uses a lot of them as a lot of guys I fished with use them, especially the river smallmouth anglers. For the price you are getting to rod at, I'd say get it and use it as a light duty jig rod, and fishing weightless Senkos.

Sounds like a good deal. I say go for it. 1/2oz jig may be a stretch but their rods are little bit over powered for their rating.

That's a good deal on a good rod. I'd grab it and make use of it. They rate that rod at 1/4-3/4 which is fairly accurate. I don't like pushing a jig rod to close to it's max just because they start feeling mushy. It will work well for all but the heaviest jigs you listed and be passable with those in sparse cover.

I'd go with the M. I used it for baits up to 1/2 oz and 5/8 oz with no issues. MH is too stiff for me in the St croix line of rods. Personal preference.

If you use braid it doesn't matter if it is medium or medium heavy.

Their 7 foot medium powers are rated 1/4 to 5/8. Are you guys saying you would not use 5/8 lures on them or is it OK to use 5/8 lures on them?

I look at it this way. Use 1/4 oz jig, plus the trailer (for instance a rage craw, approx 1/4 oz in weight) you are now at +/- 1/2oz. Right in the recommended range. I would not use a 1/2 oz and same trailer, you would be well out of the recommended range.
