I've been of the opinion that the ladies who don't fish a whole lot or any other newbie doesn't need really expensive rods because they wouldn't be able to tell the difference in sensitivity between a cheaper rod and more expensive rod anymore than the average person can tell the difference between cheaper wine and more expensive wine.
Well my wife and I went fishing for a little bit this afternoon. We had an HMG and a Fury spinning rod on us for finesse. The HMG didn't have anything rigged up on it but the Fury had a Ned Rig. (I was throwing chatterbaits). She fished the Ned on the Fury for awhile until she broke off. I said well we might as well tie one on to your HMG now that neither of them have anything on them. So after a little while she asked if I put a different Ned jighead on. I said no and asked why. She said because before she could feel everything she touched and now I don't feel nearly as much. I said well I don't know, it's the same stuff. A few seconds pass and it dawned on me and I said, ah you're using the HMG now.
I had stir fry for dinner.

Wine experts can taste the same exact wine on 3 different days and rate it different every time according to tests I've seen. I've only used cheap rods so far and I only drink cheap wine unless someone else is paying.

Yeah man my only point is is that I've always been in the camp that if you don't know much you won't tell a difference in rods. My wife fishes sometimes but not enough to know much. I guide her a lot, but she's getting better. Anyways she could tell the difference between a $20 price point today. Pretty impressive. Maybe we should recommend better to the inexperienced. IDK
Maybe she fished different spot where a lot of rock/pebbles vs mud/sand. HMG isn’t cheap nor expensive but i’ve heard good thing about it.
Hmmmmmmm....she's a keeper
Life’s too short for cheap wine or fishing gear.
One persons expensive is another’s garbage.
The key to happiness is falling somewhere between these two sayings.
I used to take a young man fishing with me and since I didn't trust him to handle the rod right, I always gave him my old ugly stick. One time he got tangled and I gave him one of my rods while I got the ugly stick untangled. He too said it was a lot more fun fishing my rod, and when I fished the ugly stick I couldn't believe how clumsy it felt. I retired the ugly stick.
This was one of the old original ugly sticks; I expect the new ones are better.
But the point of using reasonably good rods was made on me very well that day. It doesn't take a lot of money to have decent rods, but you have to know how to choose them. First step is to go light. Light usually means sensitive. The old ugly stick, 7 feet, weighed about 5 oz. My other rod weighed about 4. The rods I'm building today are usually 3.6.
She might have felt some difference in the 2 rods but I highly doubt it was because one was so much more sensitive than the other. They are both budget rods from respected companies in the same price range and shouldn't be that different from each other. I'm sure she noticed something but it wasn't because one rod cost $20 more than the other.
I thought the ned rig was supposed to be a "no feel" technique ????

Says who ?
Was the power of the two rods the same? Same line?
I ask because I have a previous generation hmg 6'9 ml-f and it's plenty sensitive with 10lb braid and a 6-8lb leader.
I had a medium power hmg at one point but they fish a bit heavy I find. I believe dobyns is a bit lighter powered rod.

I'm a sinner and fish the Ned a lot like a shakeyhead. River Smallies don't complain lol.

Both ML. Both spooled with 4lb YZH.
To be even more clear I love Fenwick and I don't think the HMG is a bad or cheap rod at all. Just very stunning that she was able to tell a difference. Same bait, same line, same location. Just a different rod.

Mostly true. But one of his retrieves is a hop retrieve which you will feel and that's how we do it in the rivers for SMB. Not much of a choice when:
A. We have to use a heavier head for current.
B. Weedguards are a must and the lightest ZMan finesse head is 1/10oz (with the weedguards that is)

Honestly, I like knowing what's going on with my bait as well. Tried the wandering no feel thing and really felt disconnected. Works for Ned Kehde evidently.
I like cheap wine. Not so much for rods or beer!

Need uses $20 Walmart Shakespeare rods so he couldn't feel anything anyways

Fatality. Savage.

It's always interesting how the same rod can feel so much different to different people. Goes to show that there's no hard and fast rules to fishing or equipment. Some rods feel great to one person, while the next person finds it to be lacking. Good thing we have lots of choices
As for the ned rig, I think it's great to explore new ideas with it. This year I am trying the TRD and crawz on a size 2 gamakatsu ewg and a 1/16oz work weight. Came across this on this site awhile back and looked perfect for not getting hung up so much.
How about the time kbeeb374 and I were out fishing last year....at one point in the day we were dragging football jigs for smallmouth over some rock. He was using a G. Loomis NRX, and I was using a Dobyns Fury. I had never had an NRX in my hands, and was dying to try it, so he handed it off to me.......my feel of the bottom went dead....and I know this lake better than the back of my hand, so I know were still in rock. I handed it back pretty unimpressed, picked up my Fury and felt the rock again. Go figure. Not an indictment of a $500 rod, but it didn't feel like I thought it would. I don't remember what line he had on, but I KNOW I had braid/FC leader....if that was the difference, a spool of braid, a length of FC, and $120 rod is a lot more bang for the buck. I also don't remember what model NRX it was, but it was a fairly stout one capable of handling the 1/2 -3/4 oz jigs we were dragging around, my Fury was a 735C, so also a fairly stout rod. I know in the past I often get better "bottom feedback" while dragging stuff around on softer rods that deflect a little bit when that jig is banging around in the rock, but I felt them just fine with the Fury and NOT the NRX.

As much fish as I catch, I can't complain when she picks up a different rod.
I like this post and I agree more money better quality; yet it makes me wonder if the sensitivity of the fury has anything to do with its better overall balance or the taper; because I’m almost positive the grade of graphite used on an HMG is a better grade of graphite. What happens when you attach a Rubber Leg Tip on the butt end of the HMG or maybe even tape a few quarters? I’d be curious to know if it balances the rod better and makes it equal in sensitivity to the Fury.

The HMG's I've picked up felt counterbalanced already. They feel very tip light but specs are heavier than similar rods with the same lengths and action.
Then what make the Fury appear more sensitive ; the Taper, Guides or reel seat ....does it have a softer upper 10% and/or are the guides Micro ?
