Low-profile Reel for Swimbaits? 2025

fishing user avatarbigbassin' reply :

Does anyone use low-profile baitcasters for swimbaits, or is it basically a given they should be thrown on a round-profile reel?

fishing user avatarIAY reply :

There are plenty of low profiles that will be fine. If you want to throw big swimbaits, the low profiles are also going to be huge though.

fishing user avatarCgrinder reply :

The Lexa 300 and Curado 300 are popular. Abu has some larger low-profile reels as well.

fishing user avatarwebertime reply :

300 sized Curados/Lexas and Abu Toros are all pretty darn big, just a bit more comfortable for some.

I use a lews bb2 and I love it

It's all a matter of personal preference. For the record, I use both round and low profile when throwing big swimbaits (I.e huddlestons, River 2 Sea S-Waver 200s, etc).  I have relatively small hands. I'm only 5'4" tall and can palm both just fine.

For low profile, I am throwing a Daiwa Lexa 300. For round, I'm throwing a Daiwa Luna 253 or 300.

If you want a low profile but think the Lexa 300 is still too big, take a look at the Daiwa Tatula 200HD. It's a 200 frame with enough line capacity for throwing swimbaits.

CITICA 200 DSV ----> RULES !!!!

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

I use a Revo Toro 50HS and Shimano Metanium XT 2005's for my swimbaiting needs. Love em'!  The Lews BB2 is a great choice as well, very smooth, nice handle, compact reel that holds plenty of line. Now I want another one! LOL....

fishing user avatarloudcherokee reply :

I'm thinking of getting the new Lews Super Duty for swimbaits when I get into throwing them. Got a few baits but need an appropriate rod first.

I think that will be a great choice! Get it.

fishing user avatar1201vilbig reply :

+2 on the Lews BB2.

fishing user avatarSilas reply :

How about a Shimano Antares AR?  I got one waiting on me at home.

  My first one.

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Coincidentally, the BB2 is about 25% off right now on TW. What ratio do you all use for swimbaits?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I have a Curado 300E and an Okuma Citrix 364. Personally feel like the Okuma cast better than the Curado and can be found for a very reasonable price online. It's also a touch heavier but holds more line so there's a trade off for the little extra weight.

fishing user avatarevilcatfish reply :

I'm using JDM Tatula HDs and a Daiwa Z2020h and while I love them there are many great LP options.

fishing user avatarfaygo1979 reply :

I used to use a curado B 200 for smaller size swimbaits and a citrix 354 for the larger ones.  this last weekend I picked up a Quantum exo 300 to replaced both those reels.  it is lighter than both of them and holds more line than either as well.  So far I am impressed with it,

fishing user avatarmojojojo reply :

Abu Garcia Toro,  Diawa Lexa 300 or the Tatula HD, Lews BB2 Pro,

The Abu Toro is a big low profile real made for big baits. Same with the Daiwa Lexa 300.

I use a Shimano Cardiff in the 300 size and I really like it. (I think the 400 size is way too big and bulky and just not needed for bass fishing) but I prefer the low profile reels.

Ive thrown big baits on standard 100 size reels with no problems (Revos, Tatula, Lews tournament MB..etc) but I wouldn't use them for day in day out swimbait use as they will wear out quick.

Im seriously looking at the discontinued Abu Garcia Revo Toro Winch or the current model of the Revo Toro. Both big low profile reels

fishing user avatarCarolinaBoy4Life reply :

I use round reels but thats just choice for big swimbaits. A lot of guy's use Lexa's and Revo's low profile

fishing user avatarRB 77 reply :

Yup! I use two CU 300E's to compliment my two CT 400's.

fishing user avatarbigbassin' reply :

I'm personally a huge Lew's fan so I'm glad to see the bb2 was mentioned several times, I'll also checkout a few of the others. Thanks for the input.

fishing user avatarpaultio reply :

The only difference in those two is the external dial (on the Pro) and some stronger gearing (I think).

Soon I'll be adding a BB2 Pro Inshore as my swimbait reel. I've currently got a Superduty on there.

I'm glad someone mentioned a Revo Toro. I've got an NaCl that I use for musky. H*LL YEAH its a good reel haha.

fishing user avatarwjjohnson907 reply :

Honestly as much as your going to spend on a low profile baitcaster, just go ahead and get a tranx 300, and if your feeling cocky get an Okuma Komodo. Komodos are BEASTS. Im talking 300 yards of 50lb braid, 30 pounds of drag, and some of the bigger ones like 450 sized are used for small tuna offshore. I would suggest a smaller one, like a 364 size or the first edition one, not the SS. Just use amazon.
