Baitcast line 2024

fishing user avatarTyler. reply :

Anyone ever use cheapo mono on their baitcasters? If so what was your take on it vs fluorocarbon?

fishing user avatarvolzfan59 reply :

I only use BPS Excel mono. Never had a problem with it.

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

I have replaced most of my flourocarbon with High Seas Grand Slam flourocarbon coated copoly. It is cheap and in my opinion handles better than most flourocarbon.

Like flourocarbon it works better on baitcasters. A little too stiff for spinning reels.

it is stocked at Walmart and cost around $7.50 for a 300 yard spool.

I got some in 10lb. May try it out. I feel like it doesn’t cast as far though. What you think?

I have been using the cheapo p-line fluorocarbon. How’s this compare? I have seen it before but never tried. Too bad it don’t come in green. I may buy it and give it a try. Love my Walmart fishing section!

I don't use cheap flourocarbon. i had too many strange line break and knot fail issues.

the only pure flourocarbon lines I will use are sunline sniper, tatsu, and berkley 100% flourocarbon. all 3 are expensive.

I used the grand slam most of this year.

I have not lost a fish due to line breakage with the High seas. Can't say the same for most flourocarbons I have tried.

It has great knot strength and good abrasion resistance.

I don't think it comes in green because most flourocarbon is clear.

I also use this line on a lot of my rods. It's supple enough to use on a spinning rod, (it's actually what I use for shakyheads), but strong enough and has enough abrasion resistance to use for jigs and T-rigs. The fact it that I can buy it at any Wal-Mart for less than $10 a spool is a huge bonus.

it was a little too stiff for my liking on spinning reels. I do use it as a leader for braid on my shakyhead rod.

I have a spool of 8lb kastking flourokote coming tomorrow. we will see how it works on spinning reels.

I don't know Captain Hooked, I've used Excel 10 lb on my BPS Pro Qualifier casting reels, on Crankin Sticks and on my CarbonLite spinning rods and reels for years. I feel like it cast as well and as far as any other mono I've tried. I'm not a huge floro fan, so I don't have a comparison.

I think if you aren't getting the distance you think you should be getting, then you should be looking elsewhere.  Highly doubt it is the line.

Lucky you.  Mine sucks although it does carry some cheap line.  Don't remember what brands, but Trilene may be one.  I used nothing but XL on my spinning rods (only kind I had at the time) for a good many years.

fishing user avatarDr. Watson reply :

I really like Trilene sensation as far as mono/copoly goes. Lately I've been getting into Sunline flourocarbon, which can be found relatively inexpensive at certain places. I also like suffix siege and seaguar.

I forgot yo-zuri hybrid, hi could I forget that????

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

Ive never used flouro/copoly. I used mono long time back and once I swapped to braid I've never looked back. I use powerpro and every reel I own.

But I have a reel that needs new line and so I think I might try the hi seas Grand slam. Thanks for info guys, wish me luck

what type of leader do you use with the power pro? if you do use a leader what knot you tie the leader and braid together with?

The "blueish tint" means it's fluorescent, meaning if will glow under a black light. It's great for night fishing. I've never been a big night fishermen, so I stick with green or clear.

To your question, as of me resigning at BPS in June, Excel mono was being made by Pure Fishing. They are the parent company of both Trilene and Stern. Same stuff, cheaper price.

I don't use a leader. Straight braid for several years. I have a fishing buddy begging me to try flouro. So this looks like a cheap way to shut him up haha!

It is a great casting line.  12-14 pound test is about as good as it gets for casting performance.  I've not yet tried Big Game, but will.

fishing user avatarTyler. reply :

I put this stuff in 10# on my baitcast reel to try it out in the backyard. Ummmm ya... this stuff is pretty thick and doesn’t spool very well. I guess I can’t complain because it was $2 at Walmart lol.

That's it! I use everything from 4 lb to 17 lb. You probably know this already, but when your buying bulk line, the secret to keeping the line left on the spool is to store it in a dry, dark place. I keep mine in Rubbermaid style boxes, in my garage.

Just to get everyone's opinion on this.

If you are casting with a baitcaster and adjusting the spool tension and the breaks to the point of no backlash but when reeling the line in it tends to not get tight on the spool or just feels loose what may be the problem? The line to big for the spool? The line too stiff?

Often this is the result of light baits with little to no resistance in the water to cause tension on the line and spool while reeling. Texas rigs are a famous culprit since they're often used with fluorocarbon line that is inherently stiffer than a comparable diameter mono. And the line is a higher test pound which also results in a stiff line that won't lay smoothly. I recommend some line conditioner as a start. Soak your spool the night before you go fishing. Also, if you're using heavier line, right before you fish hook your bait on something, pull out about 20-30 yards of line and put considerable tension for about 5 seconds. When you give it slack it should lay straight. If not, repeat the process. This will eliminate any memory for the duration of your trip and make your spool lay much smoother.

Ok. I have some real magic I been spraying on my lines since this last summer when I was introduced to it. Hopefully this stuff is decent enough for that.

Also so I changed my line out. The 10# mono stuff was too cheap and thick for the reel. This new stuff seems to be working great.

fishing user avatarTyler. reply :

I really like this stuff. It seems to cast really well.
