1000 size shimano reels 2024

fishing user avatarYumeya reply :

I've been using 2500 size reels forever except for ice fishing (500 size)

I decided to try out a 1000 size stella FJ and its amazing, super light, its like using a aldabaran but a spinning reel.

I put some Sunline Xplasma 10lb on it, it took the whole 165 yard spool  I should have used backing but
was in a hurry.

Threw the Stella on a Couquest 842 and the balance is excellent, its like pure finesse power combo.

Anyone else use the 1000 size shimano reels?

I've heard they don't cast as well as the 2500/3000 because of spool diameter, but I have also heard there is

no difference because the smaller coils of a 1000 goes through rod guides easier causing less friction...

fishing user avatarGeekFisher reply :

Using them on my ML setups.

fishing user avatarratherbfishin1 reply :

I use a 1000 size Shimano on my medium (seems a little light for a medium though, maybe closer to a ML) and I love it. It balances great and I really just like the smaller feeling. I have personally never felt like that 1000 reel was "incapable" of what a 2500 size reel can do.

fishing user avatarDeeare reply :

That’s an unbelievable combo!!!  And I’m very surprised you got that much line on it.    As far as size goes The smallest I use is the 2500 size.    I love finesse fishing and have a bunch of 2500 size reels because they are the most versatile IMO.  I definitely think casting distance is sacrificed with a 1000 but by using a Stella and plasma line that might be mitigated.

If if it works for you go for it!!

I have the original and after all these years it performs better than new!

I use a legend elite 7' light with a stradic ci4 1000 for ned rigs, small shakeyheads, rebel craw crankbaits, and small rapala minnows. It has become my go to setup for Creek smallmouth. If I could go back I'd go with a ML over the L so I could go with slightly larger baits. But it does an awesome job.

fishing user avatarhaggard reply :

CI4+ 1000 on a 6'6 L/F is my dedicated panfish combo. Feels just right.

Tried it on a 6'6 ML/F but found the 2500 more comfy.

fishing user avatarBrad Reid reply :

As regards a Shimano Ci4+ Stradic, if you are going to get a 2500, you might as well get the 3000. They weigh the same coming in at 6.7 ounces. The 1000 weighs 5.6 ounces so, if every ounce matters, I think it'd make sense. But this model is so light to begin with.

I do use Shimano Nasci reels in the 1000 series, like them just fine at about 40% the cost of the Ci4+ Stradics.

You just get so much more range of use out of the larger reels, can move it off of a light rod fishing for panfish . . . all the way up to a MH or so.

I'm a kayak/canoe angler and one of my favorite rod/reel combos is a St. Croix 5'6" rod with a 3000 series Ci4+. I never leave home without it!

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Huge fan of the 1000s

(2) 1000 FIs, (1) FJ, (1) FK, (1) CI4+

The CI4+ is by far my favorite. Have caught so many bass

over the years on these with L, ML, M, MH power rods. I

prefer 1000 size over all others and have zero issues using

them for bass. They are *more* than capable, and I even

use them for striper fishing from my yak.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

I've went to mostly 1000 size reels (Shimano & Pflueger, various grades) mostly because of weight reasons and they seem to fit my hands better.  The fish ok to me using 20 lb braid or 14 lb Fireline.  I'm pretty sure that they would handle 6 lb Fluorocarbon, but I don't fish that light that often.   My current favorite wacky rig is a 7' Fenwick HMG  MH- EXF tip - 1000 size reel (Pflueger President I think) with 20 lb braid and 15 0r 20 lb fluorocarbon leader of a foot and a half or so.  I don't worry about breaking the reel at all with this set up and it lets me cast as far as I've needed to so far.

I like how light this set up is and how when I get bit, I can use a sturdy hook set and not worry about stuff breaking.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

Not a big fan myself. Have a 1000 series Sahara that mostly sits on the shelf these days. Much prefer 2500 and up, even for all my panfishing. As long as you like it and it works, that’s all that matters.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I will say that I've handled the CI4+ 2500 and 3000 in store and

given how small and light they are, I wouldn't have a problem

owning them.

@Brad Reid, I like that rod, do you have the L or M power? My

current fav is the Premier 6' MLF which I purposely shortened to

5'9". Just prefer shorter rods.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

I have a pair of the 1000 Shinanos, an FJ and a Ci4+.  I love them with braid/thin mono but have a Ci4+ 2500 I use for 6-8lb fluoro as the larger spool handles it so much better.

I also have a Daiwa BG 2000 and honesty other then being far heavier I am liking it as much as the Ci4+ at less then half the price......

use the shimano spinning sienna 1000 fe for ultra light fishing when at desoto nat. forest waters ... use rebel critters for ultra light fishing for a change of pace ... right off the rack at academy 30 bucks ... great little reel ... pair it with shakespeare light 5'6" spinning rod ... works like a charm ...

good fishing ...

fishing user avatarResoKP reply :

I do on St.Croix Avid X 6'9" ML/XF but I find it a bit tip heavy.

But in the winter, I put it on my ice rod and the 1000 spool lets me get down to 80-120 ft for Lake Simcoe whitefish/lake trouts :D

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

The only size 1000 Shimano reel I have is a TX with Quickfire II It was paired with an old Jarvis Walker rod I had for pond action. It has a long cast spool on it,  and casts better than some size 2500 reels I have.

Is the BG 2000 a lot smaller than the 2500 Ci4+? I usually buy 2500 or 3000 sized reels, but since the BG is a little heavier I was thinking of sizing down to the 2000. I have read so many good things about the BGs. I am think of getting a BG or Tatula lt.

I own a Stradic FJ 1000 size and I love it.  Frankly don't see the issue between my 1000 and 2500 sized reels.  Mine is on my finesse Medium Light drop shot rod most of the time.

In my memory it is in-between a 1000 and 2500 Ci4+ but clooser to the 1000. I will try to grab a picture tonight.

I bought my son a Shimano Stratic 1000 at a Boys & Girls auction 25 years ago when he was 12 and Phenix rod, it's his go to finesse outfit. The Stratic reels have been a bulletproof reel for both of us.

Until a couple of years ago I used TX 2000's. They weren't bad reels and for 30 bucks they were definitely worth the money. Always wanted to see something from Shimano above the Spirex with quickfire. It was really handy for fishing in current because of the speed you could cast and engage the bail with one hand.

The quickfire is nice but it is the weakest part of the reel. I have had 3 Shimano Syncopate reels over the years. I am on my third one because the quickfire eventually broke on the first two.

If they made a reel that cost $100 or more with one they better make that part out of sturdier stuff.

Yeah, that self centering bail was rough on that anti-reverse dog.

Darren, I have the M power and it is my favorite rod, the one rod I want most on my kayak or canoe with me.

For other applications where I want to make long casts, sure, I have longer rods . . . but from the vessels I fish out of, it allows me to make more accurate casts, its shortness gives me more power over fish, tossing under docks, and on and on.

I also have the 5'6" in a casting rod, love it, too. I am surprised how far it'll cast.

I should admit that I'd like to own that L power spinning rod. I bet it is super!

fishing user avatarThe Bassman reply :

I mostly use 2500 Stradic FA's but have this one 1000 for finesse/winter fishing. Just didn't care for the short handle (especially the round EVA knob).  Swapped it out for a 2500 handle with a left hand septon knob. Really light with the JDM 6'4" Zodias. I'd really like to try the FB's but my FA's are great and I don't think they're wearing out any time soon.

I have a shimano stradic fl 1000. I usually use it for my ultralite setup- which i use for smallmouth bass. But i never had a problem catching bigger largemouth on it when pairing it with a medium rod. Its honestly my favorite reel to use lol. Wish i used it more but spinning wise I have used my shimano sustain 2500 for most of my bass fishing.

It's an awful picture but that is an FJ1000, a BG 2000 and a Ci4+ 2500

The BG is as narrow as the 1000 but about as long as the 2500.

Thanks! That is really helpful. I don’t know what rod it is on, but it looks like a great reel seat.

MB Addermine, it's maybe the best spinning reel seat I have ever gotten my hands on.  Although the stubby little Loomis TN handle that the FJ 1000 is on has really grown on me over the last year.  The seat on the other Loomis is like something out of Hellraiser, I keep thinking about getting it removed and replaced with a TN handle as well.

I have the Addermine and it is very nice, but I think I would take the conquest handle over the addermine's

Its probably the most comfortable spinning handle I have used.

I have a Sahara 1000 for UL fishing.

fishing user avatarGlaucus reply :

I enjoy nothing more than fishing finesse applications with light spinning tackle. It bores some people. I get it. A lot of people want to make cast after cast with something that moves and covers water. I like that too. But I like fishing slowly and fighting bass on light gear even more. It's probably the midwest northerner in me. After all we're all born with a spinning rod in one hand, a bottle of ranch in the other, and a Busch Light to our face. Ope!

PS I learned casting before spinning and drink Two Hearted Ale like a normal person. But the stereotype is mostly true lol!

fishing user avatarYumeya reply :

Used the combo today and loved it.

Ended up catching 7 rainbow trout, nothing big but was fun.

Still amazed at how light this combo is....

Just gonna take a guess and say it weighs around 9 ounces.
