Best lake in the Johnson/Wyandotte county area imho. Not many bigger fish but lots of them and the smallmouth are coming along really well, should be a good population of fish around a pound this year to keep things interesting.
Heard good things about that lake also. Never been over there yet.
I used to live about 5 minutes from the lake and now I'm only about 15 minutes and fish it a lot. It's a pretty deep lake for its size (400 acres with spots close to 60ft deep) lots of rock banks and some laydowns. Water is generally pretty clear so it does get tough during the hotter months but fish can still be caught. You can get all your permits at the boat house when they are open (pretty sure they're closed on Tuesday and Wednesday). It's a great lake if you like to finesse fish, probably won't like it much if you like to power fish. The lake record smallie is 4 3/4lbs I think and was caught in '07 so there is some nice smallmouth in there. I've caught them up to 3 pounds but most of them I catch are around a pound or so. A good trip for me out there will be around 20 or 30 fish with about a 60/40 ratio of largemouth to smallmouth.
what are the fishing & boating fees at Wyandotte County for a non resident? Thanks
Can't find the prices for this year but last year it was 50 dollars for a season boat permit and 30 dollars for a season fishing permit without the trout permit, with the trout permit is another 20 dollars.
Quotewhat are the fishing & boating fees at Wyandotte County for a non resident? Thanks
It would be $82 for non resident boat and fishing (no trout) - cash only...
Oh yea and I'm pretty sure you have to get the boat permit at the boathouse in the marina cove on the lake. It's closed Tuesday and Wednesday and KS cranker is right that it's cash only.
Wyandotte has been hot the last couple times I've been out! The smallmouth population seems to be really taking off with the average fish being around a pound.
My wife and I went out there with a friend Tuesday night and in about 2 hours had a limit of trout, largemouth and smallmouth, wiper, walleye, and 1 huge white bass. My wife finally got a chance to fish her new Avid Pearl rod and seems to like it pretty well. Her trout.
and her monster white bass, should have weighed this one but I'm guessing it was between 2 1/2 and 3lbs.
My buddy with his walk off last cast of the day keeper walleye, one of 2 we caught.
I've got tomorrow off. Thinking about heading to WyCo. Anyone have any tips on what has been going on out there lately? Seems like everytime I go I catch a few here and there, but haven't been able to find any sort of patterns. Mainly looking for smallies, but whatever wants to bite is fine with me!
Man I wish I could get out there. I've got the day off but I'm pretty sure the wife is going to keep me pretty busy . Get out there early as possible. The gate is supposed to open at 6am but I got out there at 5:15 Tuesday morning and the gate was open already. Points have been pretty key for me lately. They start along the edge of the weedlines in the mornings and back off into 8 or more feet of water later in the day. If you really want smallmouth fish the small point to the left when you first get to the mouth of the marina cove. I caught a couple nice smallmouth right off the back of the boats on that last dock. Right on the boatramp can be good on the washout early in the morning. If you go to the bank straight across from the marina cove and head right to the first major point that is a spot that almost always has smallmouth on it. I've been doing best with a 1/8 or 3/16 ounce shakeyhead with a watermelon/red, watermelon/purple, or watermelon candy trick worm. Biggest smallmouth on Tuesday was a solid 16" fish, had 8 smallmouth and 12 largemouth when I left at noon.
Fished the Wednesday nighter this week and it was tough! Got 3rd with 1 fish, only 3 fish weighed in but finally had a keeper smallmouth brought in! Had awesome color on it and was 19.5 inches and 3.64 pounds. An inch shorter and half a pound lighter than the one I caught out of there this spring so there's at least 2 keeper smallies in there!

I'll add to another keeper smallie that was caught - 7/31 - 19" 3.3lbs - It was a major fighter!
Going out tomorrow morning to hopefully catch a few fish... Sure wish the weather would cool down!!

Supposed to be a little cooler and on the front edge of a cold front so you may do really well. Flipping a California Craw Rage Craw into the water willow was best for me Wednesday night. The guys that caught the big smallie said they were fishing deep but didn't say how deep or with what. We got very few shakeyhead fish. My biggest smallie of the night was on a 5/8oz Jewel Jig in watermelon red with a GP twin tail trailer. They should be chasing shad first thing in the morning again, especially if it's cloudy and calm.

For whatever reason, the massive surface attacks on the shad didn't seem to happen this morning. The wind was up a little so that probably had a lot to do with that. Caught a lot of fish, but didn't really have anything of any size. Found one area that was full of bass up to 14" that loved to hit every topwater bait I threw at them. Tried to replicate that on other areas, but seemed only that one spot was of full of bass.
I haven't spent any time flip the willows... guess I should try that at some point. Might make it out there on Monday...
Sometimes they seem to really be in schools on that lake. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the clear water, lack of cover, and lots of shad. Flipping the weeds is a good tournament technique out there but not really much fun since it's just a yank and they're in the boat. This cool front should really start to turn them on out there!
Don't know why I never posted my big smallmouth on this thread. She was 20.5 inches and 4lbs 3oz. Caught her on a shakeyhead in about 10 feet of water on the bank straight across the lake from the marina cove.
Fished Wyandotte on Tuesday until my trolling motor batteries died, forgot to charge them . The smallmouth were biting really well with lots of fish on squarebills, shakeyheads, and a popper. Caught the biggest largemouth I've caught out there in a long time at 3lbs 10ozs
Got her on a shakeyhead out from under a dock in about 10 feet of water.
Took a picture of one of the darkest smallmouth I've ever caught out of there, also on a shakeyhead under a dock but right on the bank.
Fished the Wednesday night tournament and took 2nd with 3.34 lbs and big bass with a whopping 1.82lber
when do wyco lake bass tourneyments start
I believe they start in April sometime. They're wednesday nights and start at 6pm and run until 9pm or later. There used to be some info on them posted on a information board right by the boat ramp.
Great! Thanks for the information I'll be looking for that. Maybe I'll check with the guy at the marina for the personal information of the guy in charge of it. I have fished that lake my whole life and still have'nt figured it out yet. Looking forward to fishing bass tournaments I've always wanted to for the sport and challenge of fishing against other testing my skill.
Wyco is a tough lake for sure but about as good as they get around here. I won 3 of the tournaments in a row last year and then didn't win another. I got second and third a few times also. It's a good group of guys and I had a lot of fun. Unfortunately my work schedule isn't going to allow me to fish them this year or I would be out there!
it would be good to know seasonal movements of smallmouth bass in that lake i've never been able to get a good grip on their
post-spawn/early summer preferences. I believe the more i focus on bass only i will learn more about how they use the lake during the transitional periods. Time on the lake is priceless, when it comes to gaining information about how the fish prefer to
use, feed, travel, stage, etc...
There are several spots on that lake that I can consistantly catch smallmouth but I think the baits you use are probably more important on if you're catching brown fish or green. Shakeyhead plastics catch most of my brown fish, jigs, chatterbaits, and topwaters catch most of my green fish.
most of the smallmouth i've cought were on jerk baits, or unweighted sencos. have not caught many keeper largemouth but i've caught one 6/7 pounder prespawn female on crankbait. 2010 when i learn how to use this computer i'll show you a pic i am new at this computer thing.
I caught one that was 6 1/2 on a chatterbait in the marina cove and and a smallmouth that was 4lbs 3ozs on a shakeyhead off the bank to the the southeast of the marina cove. Unfortunately the big largemouth was before my camera carrying days. Jerkbaits are good for smallies in the spring but they head deep fast when the temps heat up.
when out to wyandotte last night but no tournament yet caught a few keeper largemouth.
Fished Wyco with a couple friends a few days ago. Young Bradley was on his spring break and has really wanted to go fishing again since I took him to Miami State Lake last year. We all caught fish all day long and had a really good time. Bradley caught several bass and a little wiper.
My friend Jon had plenty of fish himself including a couple pretty nice smallmouth on jerkbaits.
I ended up with 57 bass, mostly largemouth, 14 crappie, including one on a popper, 3 wipers, 1 white bass, 1 green sunfish, and 1 warmouth. Most of my fish were on jerkbaits or poppers with a few on wacky rigs, shakeyheads, and a jig also. They were really eating the popper.
We didn't catch anything real huge but it was still a really fun day.
I've still never caught a smallie and have caught very few Whites... It looks like it was a fun time.
Back to the state lake this morning! The bigger fish wanted to play today!!!!! Nothing big but the average 2# size fish were hard to find but I found quite a few in the 3-4# range. Let's just say I was happy.
First fish of the day a 4# chuncker that only went a hair over 19''
wow 57 bass!!!! great photos i recognize every place on the lake, seen any on beds?
On 4/8/2012 at 9:24 PM, wycobassmaster said:wow 57 bass!!!! great photos i recognize every place on the lake, seen any on beds?
Yeah we saw several on beds but left them all alone. No need to stick a fish on a bed out there. It's days like that where you see hundreds of fish and catch quite a few of them that make the days during the summer where you struggle to catch a dozen that much more frustrating.
spoken like a true tounament angler,
wise words my friend. I caught about 8 large mouth
bass and some really nice crappie monday afternoon.
did'nt stay long. I heard the tournaments start on the 18th
Yesterday, April 11th was the first bass tournament out there that I saw. Seen several boats lined up at the boat ramp area around 6:00 pm, figure that was the bass guys.
Thanks for the info. Wish I would have known that. Last night would have been my only chance to fish one until July or August.
Fished Wyco for 2.5 hours after work today, wish it would have been a tournament night! We caught 3 keepers and probably could have had a 3rd that was in the 3 or 3 1/2 pound range but it came off at the boat while I was playing it out. I caught 17 bass and a keeper walleye also. All of our keeper bass were on shakeyheads but we caught quite a few bass on jerkbaits also including one really fat, healthy smallmouth in the 15-16 inch range.
Wow, really good evening at Wyco, Sounds like I need to get out there more. And I can since I retired from working today !

Congrats on retiring! As long as there is still such a thing as retirement by then, I only have 40 more years to go
Went out this morning from 8am to 10:30am, and caught 19 largemouth. No smallmouth. That wind was a killer today. Places I wanted to go, could not even get an attempt to try due to white cap conditions. Caught bass on everything I threw: craw papi, squarebills, jerkbaits, and shakyhead.
I was out there Tuesday morning, it was tough for me. Only caught 16, mostly largemouth with a few smallies plus a crappie, mostly on jerkbaits. They just weren't touching a shakeyhead and just pecking at my football jig. I was trying some new line on my shakeyhead rod because everyone talks so highly of it but I hated it, really stiff and looked like rope under water with it being so clear right now. Had to switch to my wacky rig rod with nanofil and a short leader to finally get a couple on a shakeyhead.
hey guys how its going?
I'm new to fishing. Just started last year. Loved it when I catch fish. Was averaging about 4-6 a day last year but this year I cant catch a cold.
My roommate and I have to fish the banks cause we dont have boat. Seems like we have some good spots but we cannot get anything to bite.
Any suggestions fellas?
My wife and I fished Wyco for a few hours today. Nice weather like usual did not equal good fishing. Few on a shakeyhead, few on a chatterbait, few on a wacky rig, one on a squarebill. I had 2 keeper largemouths, one right at 15 on the wacky rig, the other was one of the cleanest looking fish I've ever caught from the 'dotte. Got her in 15' of water on a shakeyhead next to a stump, little over 17".
My wife was getting bit but having a hard time sticking them. She lost a largemouth that would have been a keeper right at the boat before she boated this nice smallmouth.
Gotta love the pink glove!!!!
Well I hope I didn't use all my fishing luck up this morning. I was at the Dotte from 9:30-12:30, part of that time was spent putting new bunks on my trailer, and caught a 5 fish limit Nothing huge, biggest was around 17" maybe 2 3/4lbs but I didn't jump off another one the same size and one that would have gone over 3, so I could have been culling! At Wyandotte! All on the same bait which I can't share on here because I'll be fishing the Wednesday nighters later this year and I was doing something I don't think anyone else does and I want to see if it works again or if today was just a fluke.

Awesome! Don't worry you can PM me your secret as I'm taking a year off from Wyco!
I'm not going to be able to make the Melvern gathering on June 10th, thought I had a weekend all to myself, but the wife's plans changed. Sure would like to meet up with you guys someday though...

Why are you taking the year off from Wyco? I was just starting to think I'd forgotten how to catch fish in that lake until today. I'd been averaging 1 keeper a trip, pretty crappy. Haven't caught any smallmouth over 16 yet, couple 15's though. My buddy fishes the Wednesday nighters and has won it the last 2 weeks with 2 fish and a little over 3 1/2 lbs both times. I guess someone did have a 3 1/2 pound largemouth this week and there was a 3 1/2 lb smallie last week. At least a couple bigger fish have come in. Last year I think there was 4 or 5 over 3 lbs all year with a 5.8 being the biggest.
I fished the Wednesday night tournaments for a couple of years but haven't been to one since 2 seasons ago. Typically, it's a 1 or 2 fish tournament and I have never seen anybody turn in more than 3 fish. My kids baseball schedule got in the way of the tournaments and my partner had the same issue. Hope to get out there at least a couple of times for the tournaments this year. Good luck to you.
Anybody know what the entry fee for the WYCO Wednesday Tournament? What are the hours?
I think it was $25-$30 a team last year, seems like it was 25. 20 for the heavy bag then 5 a boat for big bass. It starts at 6pm and runs to 10 or 9 depending on the weather/time of year. My buddy has won it 2 weeks in a row with 2 fish each time. I won it 3 weeks in a row last week, once with 2 fish then twice with 3 fish. It's almost always won with 2 fish but sometimes it takes 3. Someone had like 8.86lbs with the only 5lber weighed in last year and that was the heaviest bag I saw.
Might have to stop by some evening and check it out. Wonder if everybody shows up paired or are there Non boaters looking for a ride?
I assume the fish are brought in and it is not a paper tourney.
I've never seen any non-boaters hoping for a ride at the ramp. You can fish it by yourself though if you'd like, I won it by myself once last year. My wife was with me so I wasn't really by myself I guess but she was there more for moral support than anything.
They do a weigh in in the parking lot and usually stand around and BS a little after it's over. it's a good group of guys for the most part and other than the fishing being pretty tough a lot of the time it's usually pretty fun.
The wife and I decided to brave the crowd at Wyco Sunday afternoon. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Lots of boats but mainly anchored pontoons towards the dam so we fished the south end a lot. I had 3 keepers despite the crowd and added pressure they've been getting this weekend, all the same way I got my limit last week. Nicole is finally getting the concept of having to set the hook with a wacky rig instead of just reeling like she can with a crankbait. She had 3 smallmouth from 14-15 inches and a 14 inch largemouth. She lost what looked like a really good fish in the marina before we saw it also. Not bad considering she probably only fished for an hour and a half.
Hit Wyco today from 8-noon. Fishing was tough! After an hour I was still working on my first fish. Lost a big smallmouth on a shakeyhead, might have been bigger than my 4lb 3oz smallie from last year. Next fish was a 15 inch smallmouth, then a 17 inch smallmouth. Caught a short largemouth on the shakeyhead then a 17" smallmouth. Next fish was was my biggest of the year from wyco this year, 18" and 3.12lb largemouth on a pitboss in the weeds. A couple casts later I busted off another largemouth in the 17" range doing the same thing. I caught one more short largemouth and called it a day. Of course I caught some nice ones today, I forgot my camera!
Someone caught a 5.64 lb. smallmouth yesterday for the tournament. If that holds, could be the lake record.

My friend told me about that fish this morning, said it was a really healthy good looking fish. I really believe the lake has the potential to produce a new state record if one can go long enough without being caught and kept.
Yes, I believe so too. Open, clear water, rocky, and plenty of crawdads. The smallmouth are keying in on the crawdads. Something the largemouth are not doing. The guy that caught the smallmouth said it was throwing up crawdads and small shad. Give it a few more years. That lake may have the potential to be an awesome smallmouth lake.
Friend and I fished from the time the gates opened, despite the thunderstorms, until 3pm. They were really biting good early while it was cloudy and I had a 15.5 and 16.5 inch keeper largemouth. Once the sun got up they started pushing shad to the surface by the dam and we spent a few hours launching surface walking baits at schooling fish and caught a bunch doing that but only one 15 inch largemouth. We did have a couple smallies over 15 doing that and my friend had one that might have been a keeper clear the surface after his bait but it completely missed it. They were spitting up dozens of tiny shad on the way in to the boat.
Fished WYCO Lake this morning from gate open to about 10:00 AM then it started getting HOT so home to the AC I went.......
Caught several 12 to 14 inch smallmouth and a couple largemouth ...one went 15 ".
We fished Tuesday morning from open until 11am. Had 5 keepers that we measured from 15.5-18 all on shakeyheads or flipping weeds. We got on the schools by the dam really good for a while and was really whacking the 13-14 inchers, we had several doubles on walking baits and grubs. Most of our fish were largemouth but we did have a couple smallmouth. I talked one of my friends that fishes the Wednesday nighters every week and he said the guys that won it culled twice. I've never even heard of a limit getting caught during one of those tournaments but it does seem that the number of keepers is higher than normal this year so maybe that lake is growing up.
I agree with you on the good numbers of largemouth being caught this year. The only thing that is staying the same is the overall condition of the bass. A lot of largemouth bass with big heads and smaller body like before. The smallmouth bass look awesome though. They appear to be healthy and growing fast. There seems to be more vegetation growing at the lake more than usual. Which is a plus!!! Its been about three years since the state has returned to survey the lake. I wish that would change and do the yearly surveys again. I would like to see if there is any difference between the fish now and three years ago in conditioning and growth rates.
Fished Wyco yesterday morning from 6am-10:30. First time I've fished it in over a month and wow is it way down! I missed 2 light bites on a shakeyhead, caught 1 skinny smallmouth on a deep diving lucky craft, 1 short largemouth flipping weeds on the dam which was about the only place with enough water for them to get into the weeds. I caught 6 others out of surfacing fish in Wilson's cove with one barely keeper that wouldn't have weighted 1 3/4 pounds. Tons of tiny 3 inch bass everywhere but didn't see hardly any bigger fish.

WOW, that sucks. I am planning on going out there Wednesday morning, sounds like might not be too productive. But still gotta go, haven't been on the water in over three weeks. Surprised it has gotten so low. Sure hope we get a rain storm soon!

I think I probably could have done better but I had it in my head how I wanted to catch fish and they weren't playing along with my game. That and the fact that I'd been awake for over 24 hours by the time I got off the lake probably had something to do with my lack of productivity.

1547 I believe. I've slowed down a lot the last couple months with the extreme heat.
Went to Wyandotte Lake this morning, Fished fro 6 to 10:30, was not great but OK caught several small (12 inch) LMB & a few smallies (largest 17 inches).
Was a better day than I anticipated
Curtis and I fished Wyco yesterday from about 9:15-2:45. It was a grind but put over 20 fish in the boat with a mix of largemouth and smallmouth, nothing over 15" though. Shakyhead was by far the best option and most fish were off the banks a little ways at least.

Nice smallie, particularly for Wyco Lake! I'm familiar with that bank across from the marina cove - it's all rocks lining the bank and around the point. Good catch!

I like the Shakyhead too - are you throwing worms, craws, or rodents on those shakys? I really like the Culprit Fat Max worm at Cabellas (BPS doesn't have Fat Maxes). When fishing off the bank a little ways, do you cast along the contour line or perpendicular to it? I find that casting along the line works well.
Fished Wyco Wednesday morning, got there at 6:00 AM and fished until 10:00. Caught 12 bass. Nothing big mostly 13 to 14 inchers smallmouth and largemouth. They were out from the banks and a shakey head with a green pumpkin worm was their choice.

I'm with you on the green pumpkin - that color universally wins wherever I go, I'm all about the pumpkin.

I normally fish a worm but I'll also fish a baby brush hog or BPS crack craw on one. I'll usually try both retrieves to see what works best. Sometimes they want the bait to fall off the ledge and sometimes they want it climbing and popping over rocks and trees.
Fished my first Wednesday nighter of the year last night with my buddy Jon. Caught fish all night but just could not buy a keeper. I lost 3 or 4 on a buzzbait that would have been close and broke one off on a dropshot that felt heavy but never saw it. 11 or 12 boats weighed in 4 fish but one guy had a smallmouth that was 4.38lbs and the guy that won it had a small largemouth and one that was 3 1/2lbs for 4.66lbs. Don't know what they got them on but the guy that caught the smallmouth was talking about fighting it a long time on light line so probably a shakyhead or dropshot. It had great color and swam off strong.

Well it sure looks like respectable size bass are caught and winning tourneys, that's nice to know! A 4.38 lbs SM is nothing to sneeze at. The vast majority of my LM bass caught at Wyco are < 15" but occassionally I boat some > 15". This week's schedule didnt allow me to even fish Wyco as I had evening class and just things to take care of but tomorrow it's on for Hazel. In fact, tonight I have to study and at least prepare my gear for tomorrow b/c when I get off work, I'm just coming home, hooking up the trailer and off I go!
Chris and I fished the Wednesday nighter tonight. 8 boats, 4 fish weighed in, we had 3 of them. All barely keepers, and Chris caught all of them. Of course he couldn't have done it without my expert boat handling skills and one of my homemade baits that he caught 2 of them

Whether it's the captain or first mate, it doesn't matter - a catch is a catch B-)

At least when it's a buddy tournament It wasn't for lack of catching fish, I put almost 30 fish in the boat in 3.5 hours at Wyco while it was 100 degrees outside, including 3 over 15 inches, but they were all smallies Chris also had 2 smallmouth over 15. Maybe I was just cleaning the smaller, more aggressive ones out so he could catch the bigger fish . We only needed 2 of our 3 to win but I sure felt better once he boated the 3rd one. The cool thing was 2 of his 3 keepers ate one of my homemade baits, the biggest fish had it almost swallowed.
Well the 'dotte has not been nice to me the last two Wednesday nighters, hasn't been nice to anyone really. Last week Chris and I caught 9 bass all night, just under 3 an hour, biggest was 14.5 inches on a dropshot. 3 fish weighed in out of 7 boats, 3.18lbs won it, 3.12 was big bass. This week Jon and I had much better numbers but again no keepers. The bite stopped for the most part after dark. 7 boats, 2 keepers, 2.08 won the thing and got big bass, terrible.
I went out this morning during the hurricane winds and cold front hoping for some bigger fish. I had a heavy fish pull off on a SK 3XD crank right away. Got several heavy head shakes then it was gone. Might have been a big walleye but it may have been a big smallie too. The 3XD and a war eagle spinnerbait were catching a majority of my fish. I hit the same spot in the marina we finished up at last night that I also caught our last fish of the night from. Pulled my jig off a big piece of concrete and when I tried to move it again it was weightless. Slammed the rod back and finally had some weight on the end. 16 1/4" and 2.09....where was that fish last night?? Ate one of my homemade finesse jigs in summer craw color.

It's been a while since I hit up Dotte last especially since I've been on the lake marathon across the state. Maybe when it really cools off at the Dotte the big boys will come back to bite consistently. The biggest bass I've ever caught at Dotte was around 16.5" and every other body of water I've fished as beaten the Dotte's sizes. At least you're finding success (better than getting skunked, right?) although it's a grind at the Dotte. I've never tried to thoroughly fish the marina but it makes sense to try it b/c that's where they release tourney fish and as we know bass don't travel far.

There are a few bigger bass in Wyco but not many. This spring was one of my best ever, I was catching a 16-18 inch fish almost every trip. I've caught a few over 4 and one freak that was 6 1/2lbs but the size out there is just lacking. This past Wednesday was the worst one yet. Chris and I struggled to catch 6 bass combined. One smallmouth over 15" the rest were 13" or less. 7 boats, 14 anglers, 1 fish weighed in. It was the biggest largemouth I've seen from there in a while though, 4.44lbs and very healthy looking. I think with the water being low enough they can't get in the shoreline weeds they must pretty much all suspend and chase shad all summer, the certainly aren't cruising the shoreline
Fished Wyco Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Quantity was great, quality OK Tuesday but smaller fish on Wednesday. Caught over 50 Bass in two days. They were hammering the Ned Rig.
KDWPT just released that Wyco has been confirmed for Zebra Mussels.

I am not surprised what with all the lakes around here that have them and all the anglers that fish Wyco as well as those other lakes. I know the majority are concerned and careful about trying to control them, but it happens. Could have been the geese ??? Will just have to make sure and clean the boat after fishing there now.

Good to hear the fish are finally eating out there a little bit. I've been telling myself I need to get out there soon because I know that lake gets good again all the way up until they close it every fall.

Not surprised to hear that. I'm starting to think there really is no way to stop the spread of those things, maybe just slow them down a little bit.
Got to Wyco for a few hours today to see if the fall bite was still going good, it seemed to be. I was on the water from 9-12:30 and managed to put 26 bass and a nice crappie in the boat. No keeper bass and the ones I caught were skinny. The low water is punishing them it seems. My biggest of the day was a 17" smallmouth. It's crazy how much smaller a 17" fish from wyco looks compared to the 17" smallies I was catching at Melvern yesterday. It was also the only smallie I caught.
I was catching them mostly off the same short stretch of bank and I guess all the action was too much to bare and I got a reminder that I was in fact at Wyandotte lake as I was soon joined by the only other boat on the lake. 400 acres of water with 2 boats on it and this guy parked 20 yards in front of me and was barely a rods length away at times. Takes a lot of will power to keep my mouth shut at times like this.
It's about 50 yards to the point behind him so yeah he was way too close in my opinion even though I know there's no law against it, should just be common courtesy but I guess not. I was pretty surpried by my crappie. It ate a trick worm on a shakyhead and was a nice crappie for wyco.
Caught fish mostly on a shakyhead but had a few on a Ned rig, one knocker, and squarebill also. Couldn't buy a fish on a jerkbait or chatterbait which really surprised me.
http://www.kansascity.com/2012/11/08/3907643/outdoors-digest-for-nov-9.html
nothing said about this on here??
They're in there for sure. Wyco will eventually become primarily a smallmouth lake, it's just set up better for them with the deep, clear, rocky environment. I still haven't seen a picture of the new lake record caught this summer that was 5.62lbs during one of the Wednesday nighters. Good to see he released her, need fish like that to keep producing future generations of smallmouth. Too bad for him it wasn't at Melvern or Milford, that fish would have been pushing the state record at 23.5 inches at one of those lakes.
If those fun little zebras help the smallie population out there, it might just push me over the edge with getting a permit.
On 11/13/2012 at 1:19 PM, pbrussell said:If those fun little zebras help the smallie population out there, it might just push me over the edge with getting a permit.
It has as solid smallie population already, probably 40% smallies to 60% largemouth, and the average size is getting to be pretty good anymore. It is the only lake within 20 minutes you have any shot at a smallmouth over 5, no doubt about that . We had one between 15 and 17 inches every night we fished the Wednesday nighters out there this year.
Fished Wyco today, saw only two other boats on the lake. Had a decent day caught 15 LMB and 2 Smallmouth plus a drum that probably went 4#. (darn, thought I had a big bass!) Everything bit the Ned rig. No bigguns but was a fun day.
Hopefully hitting wyco tomorrow

Leave a report, I"ll probably hit Wyco Wednesday.
found the stripes right when we had to go Chris caught a 6 pounder
I fished from the bank for 30 minutes and caught 5 largemouth and a smallmouth all on a shakyhead.
We're going back Wednesday
At wyco now inform you all later
Wednesday fished from 9 to noon, caught 16 LMB biggest was 16 inches. Several came unbuttoned before getting to boat. Got broke off one time on 8 lb line (probably my fault, should have retied after several fish). PB & J twister tail and Ned rigs.
Chris And I each caught a 7+ wiper and a 3 and a 5 plus several little ones

Good Lawd Man!
Fished Wyco for likely the last time this year before it closes with Sean (sizzlefry). Tried for some of those wipers they were catching next week. I got my hook straightened on my jigging spoon 3 times and had another one pull off when I changed the hooks out. I did catch 3 very healthy, fat smallmouth in the 16 to 17 inch range. When we gave up on the wipers and started fishing for bass they were pretty willing to play. I had 31, all but those 3 smallies on shakyheads or a luck e strike rc stick Jr jerkbait. Right towards the end of the day I had by far my biggest largemouth I've caught out there this year eat my jerkbait right next to the boat and cruise by the boat like a mini sub. Had a long careful fight before Sean got the net under her. 20" and 4.14 pounds, she had great color and was one of the healthiest looking fish I've seen from out there.
Wow. Nice looking fish. Man, i long for days like that.
Well I was going to go hunting this morning but because of the wind, me being too tired to get up early, and after that good day yesterday, I decided to fish Wyandotte one more time this year It started terrible, cold and windy and despite fishing my best spots with the same baits that were working yesterday I had one 10" largemouth to show for it and my buddy Van hadn't had a bite yet. Tried shakyheads, jerkbaits, and jigging spoons with little to show for it. Tried the point at the mouth of boy scout cove and finally caught a few smallmouth and largemouth on jigging spoons and jerkbaits. Started to leave when a couple seagulls circled and picked something up off the water so I stopped and dropped a jigging spoon again. We both caught a few white bass and Van caught the skinniest wiper I've ever seen, 19" long and maybe 2.5 pounds. By 2pm we had only caught about a dozen bass so we decided one more bank then that's it. Went to a bank I didn't fish yesterday with jerkbaits and for about 20 minutes it was pretty constant. I had 2 keepers and we had several close fish between us. Jumped across the lake and I caught my last keeper of the year from Wyco, a solid 17" fish on a shakyhead.
I'd go again tomorrow but unfortunately I have to work I ended up with 31 bass on the day again today and Van probably had 15 himself.
The 'Dotte opens back up March 3rd for the start of trout season. Spring is getting here boys!
Not Soon Enough! Anxious to get back to Melvern.

I won't be able to get out there until the 6th.
Less than 2 weeks, getting down to the wire!! Any of you boys want some info on catching trout at Wyco let me know. They're much more aggressive than bass in cold water and they stock some nice ones at the Dotte that are a real fun fight on light tackle.
Id be willing to give it a try. Never fished for trout. I probably wouldnt be able to go until march 9th. Then I have a week off for spring break. Let me know if you will be able to go any day that next week.
yup Im in I love trout fishing its usually easy to catch a limit in a stocked lake. my brother lives on lake Waukomis and I hit the trout every year when they stock it. any old rooster tail or small spoon usually works but any help will do since its a new lake for me. going to buy all my tags next week so im ready.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have to postpone the opening at least a week, maybe two or even three now. Wyco is always one of the last lakes to thaw and now with all this snow and cold it will probably freeze back up again
Opening day postponed until March 9th according to the sign at the boat ramp. My dad said the lake is almost completely thawed but still going to be another week until opening day.
good cause im working might have more time off on the 9th keep us informed I would like to meet up and fish for bragging right lol

Mostly a lurker on the forum...mainly because I didn't catch a lot of bass last year and can't get out much, but I'm planning to fish the dotte regularly this year. I'm going to try and make it out for opening day, so hope to see some of you guys there. Will be out in a white and red procraft, so if you see me, come on over and say hello (or share some of your secret baits). We'll probably be huntin' bass as I'm kind of sick of trout already after all that we've caught this winter over at Lake Henry in Lawrence.

The Dotte is a little rough for bass early in the year until the water gets to the high 40's or the magic 50 degree mark. Seems to get a lot of moss on the bottom early in the year so a slowly fished jerkbait is usually one of the best options early on or a jigging spoon along deep water structure.

Last fall I pounded WYCO as I live about 5 minutes from the lake...did pretty well on smallies and a few good largemouths. I'm thinking about heading out there more this year and was planning on fishing deeper structure. I'll post some pics of anything I catch out there.
we hit 7-8 pound wipers on the deep structure last year and blue got his hook bent a couple times:( set the drag next time lol
Anybody still planning to head out there tomorrow with the rain forecast? I'm on the fence right now...

went to wyco caught a bunch of trout and someone gave me 4 channel cat so for me I will call it a good day I used a chartreuse green in line spinner/mepps
Went to wyco with sizzle-man today for about 2 hours. Miserable weather, but quite a few boats out for opening day. He had the audacity to out-fish me from the back of the boat. Tried for green or brown fish on a jerkbait, but nothing happening. Sizzle caught a couple trout in the marina cove that I'll take the credit for because I suggested we fish there. Overall a lot of fun. Hope to see others out there this spring when it warms up.
gotta thank Cole for letting me fish the lake from the back today. Chris is allergic to rain I guess.Cole is new to the lake so all the pointers we can give him sure would help. im gonna try again tomorrow all the trout are at the launch between all the docks for now.

Trout are a blast on light tackle. I don't eat them but when you can catch a 2-4 pound fish on light tackle that pulls hard and makes some of the most acrobatic jumps you'll see in freshwater, I'm in. That's what I'll be chasing Wednesday

well Chris is a trout believer I converted him when he pulled in a 5 pounder and the other 20-30 trout we caught really helped also we tore it up a real epic day for us. started off real slow but as we motored around to re group we came up with a game plan and pow we found them hung up in small stretch and that was it. Chris started the day not to sure but after we filled my limit I talked him into going to the marina and getting his trout permit it didn't take much persuasion since I offered to pay for it and he kept pulling in the big ones. 2" chartreuesse swim baits chartreuse in line spinners and believe it or not most were caught on crank baits we will be back again tomorrow come by we show you which ones
another awesome trout day at wyco it was full of people and would have been a hard day to bass fish with every piece of shoreline taken but we went back to our honey hole and tore it up again we all 3 limited out plus a bunch more we threw back or just fought there way off. my last one jumped did a gainer and snapped my lure I got a good look at it and im thinking another 5 pounder+ we got there early and I guess a few others knew about that honey hole we were parked on it and they just kept coming to take our place but all but 1 was good and moved on 1 boat decided to be rude and park 10 feet from us. the secret for us was lipless crankbait with purple and green.(the secrets out)
went to Wyandotte today we caught 2 trout but they were the biggest we have caught since we have been there. we probably would have done better but we didn't find out that they stocked the lake again today around 2 pm boy did we feel stupid. hope to hear how clayton did at lake shawnee
Skunked at the 'Dotte again today. Tried jerkbaits, jigs, shakeyhead, dreamshot, and wiggle wart. Will probably be out there again tomorrow if it's not raining too hard. Only fish I marked were in 30+ feet, which is probably where I'll focus tomorrow. They weren't interested in the drop shot, so maybe a spoon tomorrow...water temp 41-44 degrees.
we marked tons of fish at the mouths of both coves near the dam around 30 feet I mean they were stacked we thru everything we could at them and not one bite hope you can get them. try for trout next time if you can there a lot of funOn 3/30/2013 at 12:27 PM, SuperFluke said:Skunked at the 'Dotte again today. they have it wednesday we jsut call them wednesday nighters but they start in the next couple weeks if you can stop and ask the guy in the marina at the boat shop its right across the ramp in the brick building. clayton and i fish them quite a bit and there is two season a spring summer and a fall. they can be tuff but fun and can make a hundred to two hundred bucks depending on boat count. but usually starts at 6 and is done at 9 be there at 530 and i thinks its 25 a boat teams welcome and thats how most fish in teams.
Took a half day from work in order to beat the wind and rain. Caught 5, so shook the skunk off today. All 5 were LM and came on shakey head or jerkbait. Nothing bigger than 14". Water temps up to 50 degrees. Anybody know what the heck is out in the middle of the largest cove out there? Maybe a building or old bridge? Sharp break from 20' to 5' and returns on DI like I haven't seen before. Will try to grab a screenshot next time.
I assume you are talking about Wilson's Cove (across lake from Marina). It is an old rock crusher left from when the lake was a rock quarry. Looks kinda crazy on the graph due to it being a machine.
I haven't fished WYCO in several years, matter of fact it was when they put the wipers in, fished the tounry's on wed and won a couple, retired now and plan to get back out their, need to freshen up the boat and get the motor tuned up. Does anyone know if Scott stills runs the tourny.

I may on Thursday but I'll be prefishing for a tournament that I'm fishing at La Cygne Saturday so that's where I'll be Thursday. They aren't generating and I guess they may not be for up to a year?? So it isn't going to be a fun day I'm sure. All the guys I know that have been out there recently haven't even gotten a bite.

Sent you a PM
For those that are interested the Wednesday nighters will start the 17th, at least according the the sheet that was passed out the final tournament last year. I plan on being out there so come out and have a good time
Fished for a couple of hours after work. Caught two small ones. One on a double-bladed buzzbait and the other on a shakeyhead. Water temps up to 54-55, which I thought would really move the fish up. Nothing on a jerkbait or rattle trap and not a lot of activity up shallow.
I may be out there today as long as I'm not working until noon and the rain isn't too heavy. If anyone else feels like being miserable out there with me just let me know.
Sizzle and I fished Wyco yesterday for too long in the cold, cold rain. It was still pretty good with most of our fish being in 8' of water or less on either a jerkbait or a jig. Only one for sure keeper that I measured, 16 3/4". Had 7 or 8 smallies and one really nice white bass too, 78 pointer did most of the damage.
Here today with shauer. Will give a report later come by if your here
not a good day water is a little clearer than wed. but no fish
Hey.... Been following this forum for a while since I got my boat this year. I've been looking for some good spots or lures to use for the bass! Anyone got any helpful tips?
Also.. Was out there today and had NO luck.. Other than the guy that drove between me and the bank while I was clearly casting towards it each time!
I'll pipe in with everyones favorite advice...... Let the fish tell you what they want. ROFL
Seriously, Jerkbaits have been a solid lure lately and I have had success with smaller spinnerbaits. Few jig fish here and there.
Jerkbaits and jigs are usually pretty solid at Wyco in the spring. A lot of my fish Wednesday were on a 78 pointer in Pearl Threadfin shad color with about a 5 second pause. The jig fish were quick bites, tap tap and gone. Had to be really quick on the trigger to stick them. Funny thing was that the ones I got had the bait good like they must just be sucking it in and blowing it right back out. Never had much luck with a spinnerbait at Wyco until later spring or fall and that's usually only under perfect conditions. If you just want to catch some fish toss a jerkbait or a #5 shad rap and stick with them. What really has been surprising me this "spring" is how shallow the fish are despite the crap weather. Even at Melvern Friday they were in less than 6' of water, same with Wyco and Ft Scott.

Listen to Blue. I will say that the few bass I've caught at Wyandotte so far this spring have come on shakeyhead worms. If you throw one of those long enough, I can almost guarantee you'll catch something. Let me know what your boat looks like and I'll say hello if I see you out there.
Yeah that's what I've been hearing. I'll def have to try them. Buddy was using a spinner and I was tossing a top prop and a rubber worm and no bites. But cool, it's a white and blue 07 nitro. Pretty new to the boating so if you see one taking forever on the loading ramp it's most likely me lol

Jon and I fished the first Wednesday nighter tonight. Only 5 boats showed up with the bad weather in the forecast but we barely got sprinkled on it was really a pretty nice evening. We caught a ton of fish on jigs and jerkbaits. It only ran from 6 to 8:30 so we tried to cover water slowly as fast as we could. Water was 49.8-49 everywhere we fished. We caught 3 keepers, all on jerkbaits, and I lost another for sure keeper right at the boat on a jerkbait that would have won it for us. I had a keeper walleye on a jerkbait too that I thought was a nice smallmouth. We ended up with 5.17 pounds and second place. The guys that won it only had 1 fish but it was a beautiful 6.12 pound largemouth.
These tournaments are a lot of fun if any of you guys are interested in fishing them.

What are the entry fees?

$30 per team. It pays out for every 3 or 4 teams I think, which sucked for us because there was only enough boats to pay first place last night. There's a classic/fish off at the end of the year also if you qualify through apperances or points that's going to be somewhere else for a full day tournament.
Dawg you and I are doing this next week!!!!

You'll see me out there as soon as my Wednesday night class ends in mid-May.
me too I hope only 2 more Wednesdays at church for me and im free to fish with someone if Chris Shauer cant
I used to fish those Wednesday night tournaments a few years ago and they are a lot of fun. Kids got a little older and sports kind of put a damper on my Wednesday's, but I'm hoping to get out there for a couple of them this year. My brother in law sent me a picture of that 6.12 and it was a beauty. Hope to see some of you guys out there.
kanasbassfisher08 and I went and fished the Wednesday nighter tonight, fishing is about all we did. Maybe put 15 in the boat all night, none we really even needed to measure. 10 or 11 boats and 1 2.38lb fish was the only one weighed in. Cold front, clear water, and a full moon just had things locked down.

Good. It's not me.
Weather and fishing sucked again at the Dotte tonight. Most of our fish ate jerkbaits or wacky rigs. Pretty tough to fish much in the 30mph winds. Jon was the heartbreak kid. 4 times we thought he had keeper bass on, twice they were white bass, once a trout, and once a 20" walleye. 13 boats with only 1 1.82 pound fish weighed in again for an almost $400 prize.
Fished the Dotte this afternoon. Pretty strange to see only one other trailer in the lot when I pulled in. Anyway, I caught five in about three hours. All caught on a jerkbait. Used a smaller jerkbait today than I have in the past, and that seemed to make a huge difference. Two fish were 14.5"...caught one in about two feet of water that had a bloody tail. Looked for beds for awhile afterwards in the same area, but didn't see any. They'll be moving up very soon.

A 78 pointer was the only jerkbait we could get them to touch Wednesday, very specific about the colors they'd eat too. If we could ever get some stable, warm weather I think they'd flood the shallows looking to spawn. The only consistent thing about the weather so far this year is it's been very inconsistent.
I think there is a stretch this week of stability in KC. Caught the weather at Park Lanes in Shawnee last night. High 60s to mid 70s.
Oh and I did shoot another 300 last night.

You guys didn't miss a thing. 15 boats, not a single keeper weighed in. Pretty sure Chris turned one loose that would have been worth $325 though

Not sure what is up. The water was way greener than it was last week, several degrees warmer, lots of moss and junk floating on the top, and the up and down weather. It really felt like turnover conditions but in the spring.
As for Chris turning a keeper lose, it was probably short but it was bigger than anything else we caught all night and would have been close but I don't know if he thought I was charging to use my measuring board or what but it was back in the water before I could even get the board out.

Dang that sux!!!
Fished for about three hours today in the middle of the afternoon. Way underestimated the amount of drinking water I would need...holy crap it was hot. Water is probably two feet higher than it was three weeks ago, which actually makes it hard to cast to a lot of the banks. Caught a couple small ones in boy scout cove, then jumped off a definite keeper fish at the boat on the main lake. Saw a couple of fish on beds in boy scout cove but nothing big. I ended up with six, so that means that 15 lbs will win tomorrow night. I would guess that there will be at least one limit caught...

That's what I guessed last week when nobody caught a keeper You're probably right though since I won't be able to fish this week.
we came in 2nd tonight at wyco turny along with all the other fisherman only one person came in with 2 keepers for a total of 6 pounds so no one else came in with anything so the rest of tied for second or last depend how you look at it

Wasn't sure we were going to get a report from last night, so thanks! It sucks that its been so hard to catch keepers out there this year. This is my first year fishing the lake, but I feel like it has been better in past years based on this thread. Planning to make it out next week.
well its jsut one of those lakes that u can go out and kill them then the next day go out and only get a few just a presured lake and we caught a few on top water jigs shakyheads and wakyrigs but not where a lake should be this time of year and thats why im going to p town this weekend to redeem my self
Hit the 'Dotte this morning from 6-11 and finally did really well, for numbers at least. They ate a bit of everything and only had one keeper but managed 29 fish, only one of which was a smallmouth. Was nice to finally kind of feel like I knew what I was doing out there.
Well it sucked again tonight. 16 boats, 4 fish weighed in, 2.10 pounds won it. We caught probably 25-30 and none even very close to measuring.
Fished last night from 6 pm to about 8:30 pm. Water temp in low 70's. Was a pretty good night even with the dirty, high water from the rain. My brother and I probably put a dozen in the boat. Caught a few on a dropshot and a shakeyhead on the main lake, including our first smallmouth of the year at Wyandotte (a skinny 13 incher). Then, we spent the rest of the evening throwing topwater. The action was pretty steady in Boy Scout cove. Was a lot of fun until my brother jumped off the only keeper LM (2-3 lb) of the evening right by the ramp at the marina on the last cast of the day.
kanasbassfisher and I FINALLY put the right fish in the boat tonight. Caught 2 keepers, both in the last half hour, but that was enough. 15 boats, 9 keepers weighed in, we were one of two boats with two keepers. Only had 3.16 pounds but that was good for first place. Felt great to finally feel like we knew what we were doing a little bit!

Have fun down there, you've been missing some nasty weather up here!
Well its been a while since I posted, but my 2 brothers and I went out to WyCo Lake in the afternoon around 6pm until dark on May 30th. Im trying to introduce bass fishing to my brothers. We managed 13 Smallmouth Bass and 3 Largemouth Bass. All caught on shakeyheads, Craw Papi, squarebills, tubes, Ned Rigs, and jerkbaits. Smallmouths ranged from 12-18 inches and largemouth 12-14 inches.
My brothers first time ever on a boat and catches this nice 16.5 inch Smallie. He loved ever bit of it.
The first Smallmouth of the day for me. It hammered a Ned Rig. It measured out to be 17 inches.
My last fish of the day. It slammed a shakeyhead. 18 inches.

Very nice! You caught more smallmouth in one day out there than I've caught all year at Wyco. I'm not sure why I haven't been catching any, I'd sure like to bring one of those keeper smallies to the weigh in one of these nights
Felt like a real failure last Wednesday. 18 boats weighed in 11 fish, none of them were mine The lake is just stumping me this season. You'd think when you put 30-40 fish in the boat like we did you'd get one to measure but it just didn't happen. Not sure if I need to start fishing bigger baits to weed out the small fish or I'm just doing the completely wrong thing but something has to change. Still solidly in second place overall for the year (albeit a very distant second from first place) so hopefully the fish off will be somewhere I'm good at so I can really make some money on that deal.
Lol.. I'd like to know where and how you're even catching any! My best day there was Friday with only 5 fish all with a crawdad crank!

All over with a little bit of everything. Fish a wacky rigged stick bait in some kind of watermelon color along the water willow and you'll catch plenty of fish. I've only done well with crankbaits out there a couple times.

I was having a pretty crappy day today when they started hitting a wacky rigged orange Senko out of the blue. Caught my best smallie yet.

Bigger than any smallmouth I've caught out there. It seemed like last year every Wednesday night we'd get at least one or two 15-17 inch smallmouth that would disappoint us when we saw they weren't largemouth. I was on the way to the livewell with one I caught right at dark that was in the 16-16.5 inch range before I realized it wasn't a largemouth. It slammed a buzzbait right next to the boat and it's momentum and my hookset lifted it into the air and it came off and landed in the bottom of the boat where I dove on it. It was getting hard to see and it was really light colored so I thought it was a largemouth, never been so disappointed to catch a nice smallmouth on topwater.
It was a pretty tough night for Drew and I. Fish were few and far between and not very big, minus a really nice drum I got on a Ned rig. Was about to accept defeat when I caught this fish about 15 minutes before weigh in on a home made chatterbait. It was big bass and first place at 3.86 pounds, my biggest Wednesday night fish to date.
caught around 12 - 15 fish yesterday with 2 catfish in the bunch our biggest were 14 and a quarter inches.
Nice how you leave out the biggest fish!!!
Ku Xiong it was nice talking with you at the Dotte Sunday!

I live about 2 miles from Wyco Lake and that sir is a quality fish out of there. It's tough to get those fish to bite out there sometimes! Since I told you my secret Hillsdale spot....(which might be a fluke considering it IS Hillsdale) where did you pull that one from?

As far back in Wilson's cove as you can go along the edge of the water willow, the back edge, as in between the bank and the weeds in about 8 inches of water.

Yep...know where you are talking about. That is a pretty good area in there...if you like to fish for cats from time to time I've not done bad with catching a channel cat or two in there as well.

Anyone experienced wanna go out with me one of these days and kinda be an "on the water guide?" I'm not a beginner fisherman, but me and my buddies are having the HARDEST time at Wyco! Whether it's reading the electronics right, or just not fishing the right spots/technique/lures i just dont know. Lucky to have 1-2 fish each time we go. We can take my boat out too so let me know! Message me! Thanks.

How about next Wednesday? I won't get off work until 8am so we'll be in the middle of the harder bite of the day but I can at least show you some spots and baits. Send me a PM if you're interested.
Chris and I fished last Wednesday. Really one of those nights that the Dotte just beat us bad. Weather seemed perfect. Clouds, rain, some wind, dropping air temps, but really slow fishing. I had 2 real close ones but we got nothing to measure. Figured everyone else had the same problem but it seemed we were about the only boat not to weigh in Had the first keeper smallmouth of the year weighed in, just squeaked past 18" and went 2.97lbs. 5 and some change won it with 2 fish, same team had a 19+ inch largemouth that went 3 something for big bass. I'm probably out until the weather cools down a little bit again.
the dott is the mini lagcine haha well in my book
First night back to the Wednesday nighters last night. Fishing was terrible and we were having a very difficult time converting on the few bites we were getting. Right as we were ready to admit defeat and head in a fish destroyed Chris' topwater and made it to the boat (barely). 15 boats weighed in 4 fish, our one was good enough for 4th place and first out of the money! Someone weighed in a 5.1 pounder though, I think we may have seen them catch that one.

Wrong time of year to be out there. It's a spring and fall lake for sure. Still, since they white bass population exploded the bass population seems to have almost disappeared.

I caught six on the trip the biggest was maybe 2lbs, as for white bass we searched all day, Sean hooked a nice schooly LMB back in the cove and my biggest came from a blind cast in 35 feet of water at the dam.
Hit Wyco this morning, got there at 6 AM , not much action until around 10AM. Then bass were attacking shad on top of the water in the middle of the lake. Threw a small fluke into the churning water and hooked up almost every time. Had fun, although that's not normal bass fishing
Finally got a new rig and re-visited the Dotte last night, 08/10. Wife and I caught 5...all smallmouth and all dinks. Producing were plastic worms and tubes in most of the obvious areas. Will be out at the Wednesday nighter this week. First timer, and never caught a keeper bass at Wyandotte. Loving my chances

Kanasbassfisher08 and I will probably see you out there then. I'll be the guy in the green Lowe Roughneck with the dog who has about as good of a shot at catching a keeper as we do Last week there was 16 boats and not one keeper weighed in. I had one come off that I think was a keeper but that seems to happen every week. They were at least biting fairly decent last week.

Very nice looking boat by the way. I'd love to find a newer Triton aluminum that was what I'm looking for and in my price range.
I fished the Dotte Saturday with my son and his buddy we caught crappie at the dam on ned rigs drifting in 25 to 30 feet of water, they where stacked up from 30 feet to 15 feet deep for about 150 yards, biggest was 14.5 inches, even the Lake patrol came over and took a pic of it Here are few of the big ones.

Fished the bass tourney last night for the first time with my brother, Kyle. Got to meet Bluebasser86 and Kansasfisher08, which was definitely the highlight. Living bassresource legends, those two, and they lived up to it by winning the event with a single 2.66lb LM.
We caught about a half dozen smallmouth on a drop shot and wacky rigged worm. One was my PB Smallmouth for Wyandotte at 15" that I caught on a deep ledge with the dropshot. I also caught a 14.5" LM in the last 15 minutes on some kind of craw that I dug out of my box in the dark in the marina cove. Even though we didn't weigh in a fish, it was a lot of fun, and we'll be back once we figure out where some of those keeper LMs are hanging out.

It was good to meet you too. We got lucky and our plan came together for us, doesn't work that way very often unfortunately. We did have pretty good numbers of bass (Chris did anyways). I only caught 5 all night just happened that one of them was our keeper right as it was getting dark. I hope they follow the plan again next week but with the more seasonable weather they're calling for I don't see that happening.

yeah good to see some resource guys fish the tourney hope to see u guys out there again but next week might be a whole new ball game do to the weatherheading back up into the 90s fun!!! not sweet rig u have there really hope to see u guys at wabunsee and u need a partner would be glad to help out anyway i can
Fished this evening from 6 to 9 to see if I could get on any better fish. Tried some new stuff and some old stuff and boated a half dozen LM. No keepers. Lost a good sm on a jig. Dropshot was the only bait that I could get a bite on.
Fished Wyco today from 6 AM to 10 AM, caught 14 fish combo smallie and LMB. Two Keepers one 17". Jigs and tubes worked the best. Jigs on LMB tubes for the smallies.
Jon and I caught a lot of fish Wednesday night. A lot of close ones but nothing quite 15". Shakyhead, dropshot, walking baits, plastic worms, jigs, even one on a frog for good measure. Best night of catching I've had on the Dotte for awhile, probably approaching 30 fish in the boat in 3 hours.
wife and I fished this morning from 6:45 - 10. We probably caught close to 15 smallmouth and a couple of largemouth thrown in as well. Ran into Chris and his son. They were out chasing crappie and nice enough to say hello. Hope you guys found 'em!
Will probably be out this Wednesday night... need to quit catching smallmouth and try to focus on catching largemouth.

Like wise! We caught em just no keepers! The spot we got em at last time had a pontoon anchored on it : (
Wednesday nighter was really tough last night. Caught a keeper walleye on the end of a long point in 30' on the main lake. Caught a decent smallmouth on a frog. My brother caught a few nice smallmouth on a dropshot, but nothing close enough to measure. One fish weighed in out of 13 boats, but it was a nice 4.04lb largemouth.
I fished it with Bluebasser. Too bad the tourney doesn't go later, we only started to get into them in the last 45 minutes. I had a couple fish on at the end that possibly would have won the thing if I had landed them. Both on a shakyhead.

Have a question for you more experienced night-fisherman. Last night, my brother and I were debating as to whether a headlamp would affect topwater fishing in shallow water. I was thinking it wouldn't, plus it's really hard to cast towards the bank without a little light on it. Anybody have an opinion or more experienced view?

100% effects the number of bites you'll get, especially in clear water. I got without a light unless I absolutely have to use it. Your eyes adjust after a few minutes and you should be able to see fairly well.

That brings up another question, do you turn on your navigational lights?

I do but I almost always cover up the back, yellow light so it isn't as bright. It isn't pointed at the water like a headlamp will be a lot of the time either.
What bait are you guys using on the Shakey heads at Wyco? I have not had much luck using short worms.
i like a zoom finess in i think6 inch wm candy is good for me or redbug but sometimes those fishjust dont hit a shakyhead i can only think of a couple nights that they were really eating it this year ive even done good on a june bug color but think that was mostly smallies though maybe just a fluke deal but hope it helps
I use the Strike King Elaztech finesse worms 7 inches. They stretch without breaking and float tail up with a shakeyhead. Just use a gel super glue to keep it on at the base of the worm.
Berkely Havoc bottom bouncer with any watermelon color have been ok for me this year.

Don't laugh but I read this in BASS Master, use a plastic 20oz Mt Dew bottle to cover up the back light after you remove the wrapping and cut the top off.

I normally just put my hat over the top of it but that's a good idea.

Net bait T macs and Zoom Trick worms are my favorites.
Man I'm starting to feel like a broken record. Keepers are still tough to find. Kanasbassfisher08 and I fished last night, plenty of fish, just no keepers. Saw more smallies last night than I've probably seen out there all year. I broke off what felt like a good fish, I should probably learn to retie after dragging a bait through rocks all night I guess.

Yep especially in a lake with Zebra Mussels, I have had the same problem at WYCO. Try to remember to retie frequently.

I normally am really good about it because I spend so much time fishing Melvern, which is 100 times worse than Wyco for zebra mussels. I actually hadn't seen one out there until Chris caught a rock with a few on it on his crankbait. I was fishing 16lb Sunline and it's just easy to feel like you're safe with line that heavy but I know better than that and I let laziness get the best of me and it cost us.

Probably cost us the week before too....
Went out yesterday after my planned trip to Wabaunsee got messed up by a flat tire. The water was super clear. Like dirty lake in Minnesota clear. I'm guessing at least 15 feet of visibility pretty much everywhere on the north side of the lake. I caught a few fish but they were all really, really small and they all came on a white Mepps. Couldn't even get a bite on anything else I tried.
I'm glad the Wednesday nighters are almost over! 3 fish weighed in by 3 teams (not us) first place and biggest fish was a massive 1.74 pounder. I bet in the last 3 weeks there has been well over 50 fish put in my boat without one being even very close to measuring, just terrible. I had one that I thought was the right fish last night until I saw those white, rubbery lips and look down face. Stupid drum even jumped like a bass!

I'm not planning on fishing the tournaments next year so I probably won't even buy a permit next year, it's too much of a drive to catch a bunch of dinks.

Only reason I have one is Sizzle paid for it
roger that!
It's a gorgeous lake and it looks like it should house monsters but...
I'd like to trout fish it next spring but the reports are bad enough I have no desire to bass fish it :-(

2 pound smally for me but the trout are huge, sizzle and I have had two over 5 pounds, and two hybrids over 8 pounds.

I didn't catch any big ones this spring but we had a 6+ largemouth weighed in the first tournament of the year. No big smallies this year but last year there was a 5 1/2 pounder. My best are a 6.5 largemouth and a 4lb 2oz smallmouth but this year a largemouth a little shy of 4 was the biggest. If you want to fish for trout I'd go to Lake Shawnee, bigger trout, no lake or boat permit, all you need is a $12 state trout permit.

Jon was catching them on a Wart Hog crankbait (Wiggle Wart knockoff). They eat a Ned Rig pretty well out there too.
we caught our trout on lipless cranks all day.
Fished WYCO in the rain this morning, Great time! Caught probably 25 bass in 2 hours. No monsters but plenty of 13 and 14 inch fish. Water is super clear and fish are in shallow water.

1 1.84 pounder tonight and 2nd place, we're in the fish off!
Not quite the 4.5 i said you'd stick but congrats! Lol

A 4.5 would have got us a little more money but only 1 more point so it had pretty much the same effect. Mainly now I'm done out there until the water cools off and I don't have to fish next week which makes my wife really happy!
Fished Wyco this morning after I dropped the dog off at the vet. The cooler weather and cloud cover seemed to help a lot. I went out there determined to catch a fish on my Slammer. Not only did I catch one but I caught 6 and missed that many more including a smallmouth that probably would have kept. Big baits certainly didn't equal big fish, 1 out of the 6 was a keeper and only had to measure one other that I thought might be close. Didn't fish much else, had 2 on a 4" ring worm and 1 on a C rigged FattyZ. I'm sure I could have caught a lot more fish on something else but I was having fun slinging that Slammer, the looks and comments I was getting from the bank was pretty good too.
Fished Wyco this morning, don't usually go there on weekend but the weather was so nice I just had to get out and didn't get out of bed soon enough to go anywhere else. Smallmouth were really on today. Caught three keeper size including this 17 inch one.

That's a nice smallie, but they have to be 18" to be a keeper out there If they'd lower it to 15" there would be a lot more keeper fish weighed in during the tournaments.
Blue what size hooks are on that lure?? WT?
On 9/24/2013 at 10:43 PM, Chris Schauer said:Blue what size hooks are on that lure?? WT?
They're 1/0 and 2/0 trebles, big hooks. The baits 7" long and about as thick as 2 spooks put together. The water temp was 74 pretty much everywhere Friday.
Those the Stingers I sent you? If they are, they are 1/0, and #1

Yes they are, at least I got one of the sizes right
While the rest of the forum is stuck on super secret Wabaunsee probation with the prospect of fishing in 40-50 degree weather and 25 mph winds, I decided to head to Wyandotte after work. Wife and I each caught nice largemouth that were both barely short of 15". Mine on a jig and her's on a ned rig in about 15' on a ridge/point that I've caught a walleye on before on a tourney night.
Got the new Lowrance electronics installed on the boat. I've got an HDS 7 on the dash and an HDS 5 coming for the bow. Pretty cool stuff. I have to admit that about half the fun of fishing for me is playing around with the electronics. First time I've had side scan, so pretty excited and you're all going to have to endure looking at some screenshots.
Here's the "rock crusher" in Wilson Cove.
A nice brush pile that I've known about for awhile and decided to see how it would look.
Down imaging view of the brush...chart speed is a little too fast (or boat too slow) to get the best image.
A school of fish...maybe whites...hanging out just off the edge of a ridge. You can see thermocline really well in this one.
I've decided to quit fishing the bank at Wyandotte and see what I can find offshore. I've marked some good looking rock piles and some trees that I didn't know about before. Hopefully I can find some fish in some areas that get a little less pressure.
I know of a high spot with brush down near the dam that I'd like to see on sidescan/down imaging. Caught some really nice smallmouth off it on a jigging spoon late last year.

Cool. I'll try to remember to find it next time out and post an image. I know of about three others on a certain bank that I need to mark.
I'm not sure many know about the one that I graphed above. It's on an underwater point and it's off the bank a little ways. There's lots of good boulders around the area too in 15-25' of water. I've fished the brush a few times without much luck, but I need to spend some more time on the rest of the area.
I bet some of you will know what this is...I'm curious if anybody knows for sure. I don't want to post where, so if the answer gives away the location send me a pm.
it looks like the heavy equipment they left behind and never moved prior to flooding the lake

I believe it's a bunch of concrete barriers. If it's where I think it is there's a bunch of other stuff around it just to the south of it. I've caught lots of smallmouth and a surprising number of largemouth off of it.
I don't know what the name of the cove is but out from the mouth of the furthest northeast cove by the dam is where the hump and brush I'm talking about is at.

Heading out there today after work. Will post a report tonight or tomorrow morning.
It sucked. After being skunked for 2.5 hours and it starting to get dark, I finally broke down and started throwing a ned rig. Caught a nice white and a couple dink largemouth. My brother put one on and hooked a "leaf". Turned out to be a fish that was seriously smaller than the ned rig he was throwing. There was a massive bug hatch going on, which is why I think the ned rig worked when nothing else did.
Did you mark any bait balls in the 25 to 30 foot mark near the dam?

I didn't spend much time up by the dam, although I did spend some time throwing a deep diving crankbait at Clayton's pile. The little time I was up there, I did not see anything. Honestly, the only fish I marked were in Wilson's cove on some deep rock piles. We should have fished there, but didn't even stop to do so.
I could still see the thermocline on the main lake, but towards the end of the evening, the whole marina cove was turning over. The sonar was going nuts. I think the lake is probably in that fall transition period right now especially with the cool weather last night and today.

That means its WHIPER TIME!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the info
Jon and I fished Wyco for a couple hours this morning. He forgot his rain gear so when the rain started the party was over! It was tougher than I expected but I caught one on my 6 3/4" S Waver in the marina, a few on a wacky rig, and missed a whole bags worth of Flat Dawgs and senkos on a wacky rig for some reason along with a couple more misses on a chatterbait. Jon caught one on a jerkbait, broke off one on a wacky rig, and I think that was it. Water temps from 59-63 and very clear.
Fished Wyandotte today. I didn't fare well. Caught a couple that were just short of being keepers on jerkbait and tube. Talked to one other that said he had caught about 10. I was really wanting them to bite a moving bait, and they really wouldn't do it.

Yep, that looks about right. No wonder it's so hard for me to find, it looks like a pretty small tree/pile. I've caught some really nice smallies off of it though.

Depth is on right side of scale on first image. It's right on a break that goes from 10 to 30.
OK, sorry about that Super Fluke. Guess I should look at the whole picture rather than just what I want to see. LOL
Caught a few Rainbow Trout at Wyco today. After baking a couple with lemon and dill I remember why I rarely fish for them..........don't like the taste of them.
Hope yours turn out better than mine did. Did not like all the bones either. Crappie much more tasty and easier to clean.

Really it's best used as cutbait on the river. Or find someone with no tastebuds that loves the stuff and give it to them.
out there throwing robo worm on drop shot got a few hits couldn't tell if it was trout or bass, that wind and rain was killer
Windy on wyco today. Couldn't find any bass. Did manage 4 trout in the 4 hours I was there.
man really those smallies should be blasting baits right now you would think i thought about going out there this weekend but probably fish melvern instead but keep trying man they should be ready to bust any time now
Tough day at Wyco. Thought the smallies might be biting, no such luck. Only managed a trout on a ned.

I live 5 minutes from the lake and fished it two nights ago when the cold front came through. Believe it or not it wasn't terrible out there....we didn't do too bad on smallmouth. Only 1 keeper, but when I'm fun fishing I just want to have that tug on the line haha. I wonder how many boats will show up.
I live by Washington HS and fish Wyco quite a bit. Never done the wed nighters (no regular partner) but do catch quite a few smallies and LM there. Kinda focused or crappie right now(soon as it warms back up).

Never have had a lot of luck there with crappie, caught a few but usually hit up Clinton or Perry when wanting to stock the freezer.
Lately Clinton's had the only hot crappie bite. Some big wipers being caught too.

On 5/2/2014 at 4:44 AM, Skeeter9948 said:Well as usual the lake fished fairly tough....we caught fish in one way road on the steeper bank. Good group of guys out there, but man I wish the lake fished better.
The lake is tough for bigger fish, usually get plenty of smaller ones. That is the reason I do not fish the Wed nighters, who ever gets lucky enough to get a keeper is usually the winner.
i did really good last year on a shaky head natural colors 1/8 ounce and once it got later i got all my keepers on a C&C custom bladed jig black and blue with a single tail grub black trailer. fishing it near the weed lines oh and a buzz bait on the weed line too!

I drifted 3 ned rigs with my son and his buddy last year near the dam and we caught two over 13 inches, they are in there just have to find them on you FF.

I caught 15 keepers in a few hours out there last year fishing for bass. 14 on a 78 pointer and 1 on a Zell Pop! The rockpiles along the bank straight across from the marina cove and then the rock bank between Stotler and Turtle coves are usually pretty good in the spring. I think they're a lot like the bass in that lake, more than most people would think of them in there, they're just very spooky and hard to catch.

I've had a decent day out there in the past so I know there are fish in there. I read a post on here a few days ago...(too lazy to go back and look) that said he did well on a jig and big worm. Thats one thing I haven't tried that I am going to try this evening. If you put a jig in my hand or a worm I'll soak that baby all day long. I just hope those fish arent too spooky to eat it!

That was me on the KC area thread. I caught a majority of my keepers during the tournaments out there last year on a jig or big worm. Jig caught more numbers but the worm was better for bigger fish, even caught some nice smallies on a 10" worm last year. They weren't spooky about it all. First time I tried it I made about 5 cast before I got one solid "tick" and my line started heading for deeper water. Turned out to be just shy of 3 pounds and won it for us and got big bass that night. I was only getting a few bites a night until dark, then it was on.

I noticed the bite seems to pick up right around dark...I'll probably go out and fish the tournament tomorrow. My buddy wont put his spinning rod down, but this go around I'm taking your advice and going with the big baits. Heck even if I get one bite on a 10 inch worm odds are that one will be a solid keeper. I don't think I saw any guys out there dragging a worm or a big jig. How do your bladed jigs do out there? I'm going to pick up a few of em at Mondo the next time I'm in there.....any color suggestions? haha
green!
Hit up Wyco today, was nice early but got crowded later on. Caught several small mouth, most in the 12 to 14 inch range. Did get one 19 inch only weighed in at 1 lb 15 oz, a little t:him.
hows the bass bite at wyandotte? finaly done with crappie now its strictly bass
have been fishing the Wyandotte lake for many years. the bass keep getting smaller all the time, and not many in there. they don't check people. Reason for this I am told they don't have the money they once had Does anyone. I fish the wed night . If you get one over 15 you are pretty much a sure winner. That is sad. The county say they have no money, that said would people here but up to offering help to the count just for the stocking for large mouth bass to be stock . I have went back and checked , and I can not find any where that the county has ever stock bass except for when the lake was built. It would only help fishing. This lake should hold large numbers of large mouth bass. I have been told the bass are inter breading which causes smaller fish Who is up for this

The smallmouth just keep getting larger because that lake is much better suited for smallmouth than it is largemouth. Years when the water is up in the water willows the fishing is much better than it has been the last couple years. The numbers of bass isn't the problem at all, that lake is loaded with 12-14 inch fish, which I believe is part of the problem. The clear water and lack of cover drives a lot of the fish to deep water or off the banks where they suspend and chase bait fish and become extremely difficult to fish for. I fished the Wednesday nighters the last couple years until this year and numbers has never been the problem. We had nights with 30-50 fish coming to the boat and not a single one would measure over 15" (with the exception of smallmouth but they have to be 18" so they didn't help either). Now they've changed the way the creeks flow into the lake that has greatly reduced the amount of runoff coming into the lake which has made an already clear lake even clearer and greatly cut down on the amount of nutrients coming into the lake.
Stocking more largemouth in Wyco is going to do nothing but waste money and compound the issue even further by creating more competition for an already limited amount of cover. If anything, a lot of the bass need to be removed from the lake to reduce competition.
The white bass and wipers are another huge mistake that has messed up the bass fishing. Largemouth are already at a disadvantage in open water, chasing bait fish as they've lost the element of surprise. Now toss in the fact that they have to out compete those swimming stomachs that are built for speed and open water feeding and their handicap becomes even larger. The results is a bunch of skinny, starving largemouth that for some reason seem to refuse to eat the thriving bluegills and crawdads in the lake.
The smallmouth have no problem eating the craws and are much more adept at feeding in clear, open water and love the rocky bottom that comprises a majority of the lake. Now with zebra mussels in the lake, the smallmouth will have an even bigger advantage. Every lake with a viable smallmouth population that I've seen, the smallmouth have exploded when zebra mussels got into the lake, Melvern is a prime example.
Provided nothing major happens I think you'll see the lake transition into a good, if not great, smallmouth fishery and the largemouth will become more of an occasional catch but the quality will become better as their numbers drop. It may take several years to get to that point, but I think it will happen.
Ok. If you think so. We will see. The waste of money is the trout. But that's ok. Once again we try to address the problem. I just believe we need a new blood line after 50 years of the same line breading year after year. I will say no more

Welcome to the forum! Hope you stick around and continue to post. Don't let Blue scare you off, he's actually a halfway decent guy.
I just fished the Dotte last year, and it was the first year that I had fished it. I'm not sure there's a simple answer as to what needs to be done. The lake gets a ton of pressure for its size from the bank and the boat. You can find 10+ boats out there on a Saturday and you can go to Shawnee Mission Park lake on the same day and see 1. On top of that they stock literally several tons of catfish and trout each year that have to be competing with the bass for forage. There's not a ton of cover in the lake, and most of it was high and dry last year. All of this leads to an uphill battle for the black bass population. I think the best you can hope for is that the smallmouth do take off as Blue has suggested.
Compare this to Lake Jacomo which is managed by the MDC. Stockings are only done "based on the carrying capacity and the fishing pressure of the lake". This seems a like a better approach than dumping 30,000 lbs of trout and catfish into the lake every year to sell permits. Maybe it would be best to try to convince Wyandotte to use a more balanced, data-driven approach when managing the lake to attract a wider variety of fisherman. You can have a lake that has good populations of several species if managed appropriately. We can dream, right? I doubt much will change given that they probably sell a great deal more permits to bank fisherman chasing catfish and trout than they do to the bass guys and gals.
I won't be purchasing a Wyandotte permit anytime soon, but I doubt me and 10 other bass guys leaving will cause them to change their mind about how they manage the lake. I hope it gets better, and I'm glad people care about the bass fishing out there. I just don't see it changing anytime soon.
I don't see a change my self. I started fishing this lake when I was 10 years old. I am 62 now. All I see is lake going down hill. O well it is what it is. I guess I want the good old days back.

Maybe when the small mouth get a little bigger it will be like the would days. I enjoy the fight of the small mouth over the LMB.
That lakes only chance is lots of offshore cover away from the bucket fisherman
Proper stocking of LMB and SMB would be great as long as you could also stock something for them to eat or add feeders?
It's a big lake open up the speed limits and let jet skiers and the wake-boarders on it to throw off the fishermen a bit...
I bet if you could do all that not nearly as many people would want to fish.... ???
make it a boat only lake

Don't see that ever being an option, many more bank fishermen than boaters so the revenue from permits would be drastically reduced. Not enough $$ according to the government officials.

Lake. Really not big enough for that, espically this close to the metro city.
Well, it kind of does not help the fisheries when there has not been any kind of fish sampling for maybe 5-6 years. Since the county going back to its permits, the state does not want to get involved anymore. The county feels as if they are losing money, losing control when the the lake was a CFAP. They could not agree to anything, so the state has decided to quit with the fisheries sampling (i.e. shocking and netting) and the stocking of the lake. So for the past 5-6 years, it is unknown statistically on the quality and quantity of any given sport fish out there. The last sampling I was involved in, maybe 2008 or 2009, the SMB were doing great. Lots of young of year class and a couple breeders. LMB were numerous also, but mostly the 12-16 inch class. A lot came from the willows of the dam and the south side of Wilson's Cove. Looking at it now, the SMB population has exploded. Mainly taking advantage of the numerous crawdads in that lake. Something the LMB are not doing. Im catching more 15-20 inch SMB than keeper LMB. During this years spawn, I have seen several 4-5 pound LMB on their beds. So, they are out there. With this vegetation growth continuing from last year, hopefully it will atleast kind of improve the LMB population with some kind of habitat for it to lay and ambush. That lake just needs more habitat for the LMB. I have often heard how great the lake used to be for LMB when the lily pads were in. It can still happen, it just needs time and the right fisheries management.
The trout and catfish are the main money makers for the sales of permits. I do not see them stopping that. I do agree with blue, no need to stock more LMB when there is plenty of them in the lake. I have been thinking about proposing to the parks director of maybe the stocking of Spotted Bass. Deep clear lake with rock structure and little vegetation. A habitat more suited for them. But, issues come up of competition for food. Another mouth to out compete the LMB. Good idea? I would like to see them in there, but mainly just for my selfish enjoyment of catching one and having a place close to home to catch one.

There's much smaller lakes that allow jetskis and all that nonsense. They buoy off part of the lake and only allow them in the more open areas and all the coves are no wake. Not that I agree with it, but I bet if they allowed it they would draw a lot of people to the lake that don't currently use the lake. Could even make them buy another permit just for pleasure craft? Miola does that and allows fishing boats on for free. Not like they have to worry about the zebra mussels getting into the lake anymore.

The return of sampling would be great, so they could at least have an idea of what may need done. The loss of vegetation has been a killer for the LMB like you said. I wish they would attempt to introduce some pads back into the lake in the back of the coves (they're all soft, mud bottoms, perfect place for weeds to grow). I would think that milfoil or some other vegetation that grows in a little deeper water would help a lot also. Years when the water is up in the willows, the largemouth seem to do very well. A few years ago it was up past the willows. That spring it wasn't uncommon for me to be able to catch a limit over 15" out of the willows and I had several largemouth in the 17-20 inch range, it was like fishing a different lake. Since then the water has been so low that a lot of the normally productive willows aren't even in the water.
The trout and catfish will always be stocked in there, but that's mostly a put and take fishery. The trout almost all die once the water gets warm and the catfish aren't going to outcompete the largemouth. I'm sure the catfish are mainly eating craws that the largemouth seem to largely ignore anyways. I've thought the same about spotted bass. My main concern would be how much they might compete with the smallmouth. I love catching spots, but I'd rather catch smallmouth. I think the lake could really benefit from a slot limit, like 12 or 13 inches to 15 inches and maybe an additional 18-21 inch slot to protect those rare large individuals. I'm sure that would really rile up some of the Wednesday night guys but it's a rare fish that reaches the 18" mark in Wyco.
I've got proof that there are bass in Wyco too! All caught in the last couple years and released after their photoshoot.

Well another Wednesday night. 14 boats. Lots of fist. Can't believe how well. And the winner is. """""""":"""" 1 fish 1.74 lbs. This lake is on fire.

Sounds like Wyco in the summer time. Go out and catch 20-30 fish and not even have to measure a single one. Most of the ones we won last year were in the last half hour though. Couple specific spots we could go to and almost always have a shot at one that was either a keeper or very close to it.
Went out this morning ( sunday) at 6.00 am. Fished up to 11.00 am. 10 bass, the biggest was 13in. Stayed out away from bank, 15 to 25 ft of water. There were two guys in a kyack put in same time as me. Took out same time as I. The first question they asked was are there any bass in this lake over 13 in. I told them people say there is but, I have yet to get one over 14. These guys said they were from ( lake lotawanta). They indicated it was not uncommon to get 3 lb bass at that lake. I asked why they came to wyandotte . That are trying differant lakes in the area with there k yacks.
Wednesday 6/26 15 boats. 1 fish turned in. 1.92 won. Still nothing over 2 . My grandson and I had 9 largemouth all 13 1/2 inch. After talking to some others boats we did good. About 5 other boats did not boat a fish. This is sad.
I fished Wyco Thursday morning. 7 to 1130. Caught 7 LMB most 13 to 14 but did manage he keeper @ 15.25. Also got 5 small mouth biggest went 14 inches.
Is it an 18" minimum for smallies and 15" for LMB?

Yep, that's right.
Also got checked for a license. Had my state license but don't need one for Wyco since I'm an old fart !
Guys I have contacted JACK WEBB with Wyco about the bass in this lake. He says there is nothing wrong with the bass in this lake. Keep track of how many bass over the size limit. And if you think there is a problem send him a email.

I think almost everyone on here that used to fish it has stopped because of the small average size of the fish out there. I know I'm not buying the permit and driving all the way out there when I can go to Douglas County for free and catch a bunch of dinks with a slim chance at a bigger fish.
Bluebasser86. Do us all a favor and email this guy and complain to him as I did. You can find him on the Wyco. Web page
If anyone is interested in seeing a report on the the fish quality in wyandotte lake for the years of 06,07 send me an email (fgrnfish@aol.com). Look at the report for then and you will see it has declined even more

It's all about money to the Unified Government, and they aren't going to put any extra into the lake. The lake would have to be an exponentially better bass fishery to truly attract enough bass fishermen to make the county much money. I've worked for the UG, trying to get money for something that is going to take a lot of man hours and money to get any return is a futile battle. I'd suggest enjoying it for what it is, a place you can go that's close to home where you can catch a few fish. I'd still fish it if it were closer, just for the shot at catching a big smallmouth if nothing else. Get out there right as the gates are opening or an hour before dark and fish until the lake closes, you'll catch more fish in those few hours than you will in a whole day of fishing when it's hot out.
Wed night report
We had 15 boats. There were 7 fish brought in . As always nothing over 2lbs. Big fish was 1.84. As for my boat 18 bass, all 13 1/2 to 14 inch. One of the bass we got had a big head small body. ( wonder what's wrong with this pic.)

I have caught several like that this year. Over populated small fish? That's my thought.
Surely that many boats with guys who know how to fish should be able to get something over 2# if there are a few in the lake.
I missed a couple of nights and I am being told twice has a fish over 2lbs been borough in. And only twice has there ever been 7fish weighed. And they say nothing is wrong with the lake.
Im new to this board, just found it. Been reading the pages, Awsome pic of the rock crusher. Anyways, Ive been fishing wyandotte most of my life (24 years old). I think their are some big ones in the lake. A couple of months ago I was in a cove and a bass jumped about 30 feet out straight in front of my eyes, it was conservatively a 6lb fish. Now every time I go out their thats the first place I go.

ya well blue and i fished alot of the Wednesday nighters at the dott and 99% of them sucked even some of the ones we placed in sucked and i tried to talk them into haveing a bass pass format for the smallies and the guy said oh they wont do that due to the unified goverment owned lake and bla bla bla that tourny is a joke and that lake is a joke. why in the world would you agree to take fish out of there and put them in hillsdale. take a lake that is ok and take fish out for a lake that sucks for bass. and now all they stock it with is catfish and trout! it is just so frustrating cus it really is about money and it would cost me over 100 bucks for my permits to fish at a lake thats so tough ha and if the Wednesday night tounry keeps going that way they are only going to have 5 boats show up and dont understand why! its simple to fix the problem but its never going to happen they are to worried about permit fees and paying the dott patrol to harass the fisherman in the boats who paid all the money to fish there and let the pot head and allow all the shenanigans bank fishing just run wild! im done complaining about the lost cause of wyco lake. sorry bad day at work too!

That's the truth!!!
Any big bass in the Wed night tx on Wyco this week??
Hit Wyco this morning......usual stuff.......several dinks
Had a good morning at Wyco. Caught TWO keeper LMB. One 15 1/4 and a 16 inch that weighed 2.3 #.
Don't know why pics loaded sideways.
That's almost without a doubt a 1st place on a Wednesday nighter this time of year

Yea you're probably right. Too bad it was Wednesday morning instead of evening.
The lake was true to form today..........only managed 3 small mouth that would have to grow quite a bit to be considered dinks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-) :-)
Don't know why I keep going to this lake, other than it is 10 minutes from driveway to ramp. Only managed 2 dinks this morning. Although they were my first fish on a spy bait!!

Is everyone now tired of the small fish in wyandotte lake. I stoped fishing it on wed night becouse of it. I have sent JACK WEBB, the guy that over see the lake the sample report from 06,07. I have emailed Jack Webb a couple times as well, got one back was lip service. Mayor,s email is mayorholland@wycokck.org. copy him on your correspondence to Jack Webb.
I've never fished Wyco, but based on what I've heard (and what I know about the area, even if some might not want to hear it) is it sounds like a fishery that's been irreparably damaged by the bucket fishermen, in more ways than one...
I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm the mayor... what potential return on investment am I looking at by taking measures to restore the fishery to what it once was?
Government cannot look for a return on investment for recreational facilities. They are just a service provided to the taxpayer. Wyco does, however, charge a healthy fee for fishing permits and boat permits and the taxpayer or user of this lake is not getting anything in return for the fees. If the Unified Government wants to encourage folks to come to the lake hey are gong to have to provide some decent fishing. I disagree that the bucket fishers are keeping the small bass, all I ever see anybody carry away are channel cat or trout.
And that in it self is the problem. All they ever do is stock with cat fish , and trout. The trout all die off by mid June. I don't believe the bank fishermen are all to blame. I believe on the large mouth, after 50 plus years the genetic pool is gone. They have never stocked a new strain of large mouth in the lake.

Smallies and Whipers at the dam around sundown!
Sizzle and I had a yearly pass for my boat and we did very well on Wipers and Trout but LMB/SMB I think the biggest may have been 3#
Hoping the fall bite will be just as good as the spring. Been trying for 3 years to get a 4 pounder from there this year I came close with a 3.7 (the one in my profile pic) it's just been nothing but dinks after that.
Well they'd sent all the permits in for the year already so since I wouldn't have to buy a permit Jared and I went to the Dotte for 2 hours Friday morning. Water was super clear and zebra mussels looked like they were doing very well. Wind was howling which made fishing slow difficult. Water temp was 43 degrees and I managed to catch 2 largemouth that were much fatter than last time I fished Wyco.
I hooked one fish on a jigging spoon by the excavator but it came off shortly after it hooked up.
Wyco opened Saturday, I couldn't make it then but went out Sunday managed a limit of trout (gave to neighbors as I wouldn't eat them) also caught two small LMB.
A buddy of mine checked 87 people for permit and cull violations and did not cite one person I guess that's a good thing.

I think most the guys on here know Jon (basshunter0731)
Glad they got someone out there other than Ku who knows what to look for. They can't catch everything but a couple of my buddies that have worked out there couldn't ID a smallmouth from a largemouth if their lives depending on it.
Didn't know bond was a game warden lol that's pretty cool good job wyco
He was working some OT but he's certified now so he can do that.
There are about 4 bedding Largemouth Bass right in front of Denny's Shop. When I get the chance to, I will go check them out. Well, yesterday (04-25-2015) Denny advised me, someone had thrown 2 large rocks (10-15 pound range) right onto this about 3-3.5 pounders bed. Sure enough, 2 large boulders on this bass's bed. The bass was still hanging around the bed, but if it had eggs, I dont know if they would have survived that. I dont know, but that seriously irritated me.

Probably the same kind of people that complain about us hurting the fish when we hook them I've heard there's been some nice fish, largemouth and smallmouth being caught out there this spring, makes me miss fishing it a little.
Smallmouth bite was great Tuesday on Wyco. No hawgs but quantity was good. Largest I caught was 16 inches most were 13 to 14, still had a fun day fighting those brown fish.
Jon had an outstanding day there this past week with over 50 fish and 9 keeper largemouth. No monsters but a terrific day for the Dotte. My dad has been catching some good fish out there, and he's not really a "bass fisherman".
Wyco was HOT this morning !!! fished from 7:30 to 11:00 and caught 35-40 bass. Most Wyco average size of 12 to 14 but did have 5 keeper LM. Smallmouth were hammering pop-Rs and LM hungered for the Ned. Lots of fish had the 17 year bugs in their craw.
Still HOT today!! Average WYCO size but quantity was awesome. And it is close to home.
So if I'm shore fishing do you think I can punch that thick grass? Been to windy to take the kayak out and I'm boatless
Probably be tough reeling in dragging tackle through it, even tougher dragging a fish.
Yeah that's what I thought. Had a small one get wrapped in the grass and I had to pull it in by hand must of been 7 pounds of grass stuck to that little bass.
Good morning at Wyco today. Got one 3# smallmouth and a couple more that were over 2#.
Forgot my phone at home, wasn't wide awake when I left at 5:40 AM so no pics.

Depends on how the fish want it presented. Sometimes work it like a shaky head other times slow retrieve, or maybe pop it and let it fall kinda like a jerk bait.

that morning bite must be hot I've been to lazy to fish the mornings
Morning bite was fair today, nothing really spectacular several 12 - 14 inch small mouth. Did manage one at 1.8#. close to 2#.
Tournament tonight? If so, what time and how much?
It used to start at 6 and was 30 per boat.
Got a couple keeper LMB this morning.
Skinny skinny
Yes, they wee a little thin. Several hook marks on lips guess too much exercise.
From all talk I've heard about wyco, still a good fish.
Actually Wyco has been fairly decent this year. I have caught several smallmouth over 2#. And usually at least one LMB at 15 to 16 each time I go.
That's the way it works every time until you fish on Wednesday night.
Wyco gave me a good one this morning. 3lb 15oz. 19 1/2 inches
One ounce shy of the 4 pound club!

The one from Melvern coming off that shelf rock by the campgrounds...that picture gets me every time!
4.80, and it WAS on a Ned
I'm looking for that 5+. I have 3 to my credit now that all rang up a 5 pounds even (what are the odds??). 2 from Milford, 1 from Melvern. A LC Slender Pointer 97MR in Chartreuse Shad, Zoom Trick worm in Watermelon/gold flake on a pro slider head, and a LC Fat BDS Zero in American shad each claimed one. The one from Melvern ate the Fat BDS Zero, which is like 1 3/4" long and 1/4oz, not even as big as a Strike King 1.0. I'm guessing she went for it because there wasn't any room for anything else.
I'm fishing Milford next weekend for a tournament/benefit deal and I WILL be looking for those toad Smallies. State record came from Milford at just under 7#
Still grinding for that 4+ at 'Vern...

I grew up fishing Milford. I like it better than Melvern because I caught big fish out there without even knowing what I was doing. Plus, the wipers, walleyes, and blue cats are a big bonus.
Fished the Dotte for several hours yesterday, it did not treat us very well. We'd been on the water probably close to 2 hours when I finally caught my first fish in the back of Wilson, but it was a largemouth that might have kept. My next fish about an hour later was a drum Jon was doing pretty decent and the Shhh talking was getting pretty heavy from the front of the boat. I was tossing a Ned out to the first drop on the open water side of the boat when my line jumped on the fall and my hook set was met with a considerable amount of resistance. Shortly after, a stout smallmouth was airborne and there was much scrambling going on in the boat. Having drug my bait through the razor clams for nearly 3 hours at this point and knowing my hook was rusted and bent (I'd forgotten my Ned Heads and dug this one out of the bottom of my bag). I was sure the line would part or the hook would give, turns out my biggest concern should have been my net man . I believe there was 3 or 4 missed net attempts before it was finally safely in the boat. 19" long makes it my 3rd keeper smallie ever from Wyco but still not very heavy at only 3lb 3oz. It still really made up for my otherwise bad performance.
It picked up a little from there, Ned was the only thing working for me but Jon started catching a few on a French Pearl STX, including a healthy 17" largemouth and a super fat white bass. We also recovered a rod and reel from about 15' up in a tree
Nice Smallmouth, have not been out to Wyco for about two weeks. Last trip there water was green and I believe lake was in turnover. Hope to get back out this week.
Beautiful day to be on the water. Wyco was nice to me today..... several fish over 2# and one went 3.5# and 18 inches.

Jack Baker has them, he mapped the lake a few years back.

Watched the trout stocking at Wyco this afternoon. There were some nice sized ones came out of that chute.
Got to the lake late it was packed ended up at the creek by entrance caught my limit of trout so I'm happy
I took my son out last Thursday after he got out of school. The Jerk bait bite is on. My son had one bass on the Ned and two trout on the dam with it. I wasn't able to fish any of the north side of the one way road, it was packed with bank fishermen. We did good on the stretch of bank below the Davis Hall, and on the West side from the tower south.
Anyone see this? My buddy sent the picture and said it was at the dotte.

That pic is not at the dotte. The dock surface is concrete and all docks at the dotte are wood slat boards. Also the water is not that deep enough at the ramp close to the dock to completely submerge a truck with a camper shell.
That water sure is clear.
Wyco is VERY clear, most likely from the Zebra Mussels.
I expect to see a picture like that with a white dodge ram some day
Hey guys! Just got a boat/fishing permit to Wyandotte county. The lake is about 20 mins from my house, so I figured it was worth a shot. Looks like this used to be a pretty hot conversation thread at one time. Do any of you guys still fish this lake? From the sound of things, the lake was apparently on the decline. Went out last weekend for a few hours and caught a few short LM. Any reports that you all can share would be fantastic.

i live 5 minutes away and fish it once or twice a week.
Wyandotte is a finicky lake. Especially in the spring. the bass fishing can be tough . There are decent fish in that lake, but they are seldom by the shoreline.
I caught several 4 pound plus largemouth and a few 3lb plus smallmouth last year. all of them were on offshore structure and weedbeds. usually in 10 to 20 foot of water. fishing the shoreline is usually a dinkfest.
this spring has been slow. a couple 2-3 pounders and a lot of dinks. I always do better there from spawn through November. I usually spend more time on other lakes this time of year.
I don't think the lake is necessarily in decline. It just changed.
A couple years ago the water was clear from the zebra mussels. Anything laying in the water was coated with them. there were defined weedbeds and the bass patrolled the edges of them.
Last year the mussels died off and the water is not near as clear. The weedbeds were less defined. The bass seemed to congregate around what weedbeds were left. With the stained water the healthy weedbeds are harder to find.
That is one lake where the zebra mussels improve the Bass fishing.
This is great information! Maybe I will see you out there this year. I will be in a green Astro and I plan to be out there on the week day evenings when I don’t have all day to be out at La Cygne or Melvern. Stop by and say hi. I enjoy the challenge of off shore fishing, so this sound like a fun lake.
I really enjoyed fishing Wyco when I lived right by it. Sometimes I still get the inclination to buy the permit but it's almost a hour drive and almost $100, that calms my urge down pretty quick.
I know some guys that really know the lake that say it's as good the last couple years as it's been in a long, long time, especially for better quality fish. It's a sleeper lake for the next state record smallmouth if nothing else. It has some gigantic wipers too.

Thanks Blue! Another promising piece of insight. The wife and I plan to go out there tomorrow evening for a few hours. The lake definitely looks the part. Probably plan to just spend a little time idling around on the graphs to find some of the structure that holds the bigger fish. I hear you guys reference Boy Scout cove and Wilson’s cove. Which one is which? I assume they are both on the east side of the lake across from the marina?
Hmmm, maybe instead of La Cygne I should try WYCO tomorrow??? Hmmmmmmm.... It's been 2 years since I've caught a smallie, so I'm dying to get into that action again.
Wow, can't believe it's been a year for this page and I was the last post!!

My buddy that fishes it often has been doing really well with a popper early and then switching to a wacky rig or swimbait when the stop biting that.

In the past I was looking into coming over from Missouri to fish this, but permits are a bit high for my tastes:
I already pay $130 a year to fish Smithville in addition to my Missouri hunting and fishing permit for $19 dollars.

I feel the same way about Smithville. I have to pay all the fees and buy an out of state license.
The only reason I paid the Smithville fees this year is the reservoirs in eastern Kansas have been closed to boating for a while.
I live 5 miles from Wyandotte. It is a great numbers lake. I was there this morning and caught 20 bass in 2 hours. Largest fish was 16 inches long.
Bigger fish have been a little scarce this year. I think that is due to the increased pressure, from the reservoirs being closed.

I suspected it worked both ways. Non-resident permits are always higher and counties like Wyandotte in Kansas and Clay in Missouri charge high fees, even for residents.
I fish Table Rock quite a bit, but I wanted to go to Wyandotte to get a smallmouth fix close to home. There aren't any smallmouth waters in Missouri's northwest so I always have to travel a few hours if I want to fish for them.

Melvern has a good population of smallmouth, and the population is getting better at Clinton. There's a bunch of them in Wabaunsee but that's probably getting to be not much closer than just driving to Table Rock for you. It does have huge smallies and largemouth both though.

One other lake that has smallies is Shawnee lake in Topeka. It is an hour west of kck.
There are no boating or fishing fees. Roughly the same size as wyco. It is a fun lake to fish. Sometimes the smallmouth are hard to find, but it also has a decent population of largemouth.
Regarding Melvern and Shawnee Lake what is the population analysis of the smallmouth, and any other bass, in the lake (i.e. what percentage are above 15 inches, etc.)?
Thanks for the recommendations. I see that all corp boat ramps are $5.00 a day at Melvern so that is definitely acceptable and I think I could handle no fees at Shawnee Lake. ???? Perry isn't much further than an hour either. I see there are daily vehicle fees there. Is there anything I am missing about Perry regarding fees, other than a non-resident Kansas license?

With Perry it depends on the boat ramp. There are daily fees for the Army Corp ramps. The state park ramps require an annual state park tag for your vehicle, which is good anywhere in Kansas.
I believe the marina ramps are free, but can get pretty busy.
Old town ramp by Ozawkie has a daily fee also. That is on the very North end of the lake.
Perry is still around 20 feet high and all ramps are still closed.
I am anxious to get out there, when it opens up. With no fishing pressure this summer it could be really good.
Fishing was pretty good for smallmouth and largemouth there last summer.

Melvern has a high population of smallmouth with a decent number of fish over 15" and some reaching over 5 pounds. Shawnee has a much lower density, fewer fish over 15", but has produced several over 6 pounds to nearly 7. Perry doesn't have any free ramps that I'm aware of other than way up the Delaware. It doesn't have a great population of smallmouth but it does have some big ones. Wabaunsee has a bunch of smaller ones and has some really big ones but not many in between.
Perry Lake Rock Creek Marina ramp does not cost to launch.
