Does this reel allow you to back reel? can it reel in both directions? I notice Shimano is moving away from this feature

Answer: You can't back reel - one way only. You're right, Shimano is not incorporating this feature into their reels going forward. For example, my four year old Shimano Ci4 has an anti-reverse switch so you can turn it on or off (to allow you to back reel), but the new Ci4+ doesn't have the feature. The drag on the new reels are so linear, smooth, and adjustable that the need to back reel isn't really necessary anymore. The Stella FJ is a superior reel, though, and worth the money - you won't go wrong in purchasing it.

Answer: No it does not. It is a pitty. I really liked this feature in other reels.

Does the Stella 4000fj come with an extra spool? What happend to the days when you bought a nice fishing reel it came with 2 spools?

What does the compact mean

Answer: compact mean "compact Body" - the size is from a 4000 (more compact against a normal 5000 size) but a deeper spool, stronger handle.
