It took me long enough, but I finally got my deep crank design done from start to finish.
That is amazing! Congrats
WOW... that bait looks awesome Stringjam. The painting is really nice as well. I hope you can take pictures of fish that you catch on it.
String - Great Looking Bait !!! Details are excellent !!!!

Love the pattern.
Looks very professional.
Going to add those KVD Mustad treble hooks???
"WOW" says it all. That bait is awesome! 8-)
Jon ...Sweet ! That looks real nice. Its been fun watching your post, you've got to be pleased with the results. Have you got to try it out yet on the water? Thats a different design on the bill, how deep will it run? Awesome looking paint job
Yea I want to see a picture from the front. I want to see what that lip shape looks like! Sharp color man. Looks killer
Congrats SJ! The bait design is great, but I love the paint job on it. 8-)

I am pretty curious about them....but I have a set of #2 Gamakatsu EWG's for this one. I need to pick up a set of the Mustads to compare....as they look VERY similar.

I'm hoping for 16-17'. I'll be testing it this Saturday.
Jon, I really like it! It has a real jewel like quality to it. I can only imagine what the future will bring if this is a 'first effort'. Kudos!
Whats it weigh? When are then available to the public?
QuoteWhats it weigh? When are then available to the public?
I don't have a weight yet (yeah, I know).
As far as available to the public - - as soon as I can find $20K laying around to buy a roto-duplicator...because there's no way I'd ever try to sell these things carving them by hand! ;D
That is hands down the cleanest home built crank I have ever seen. Amazing.
great looking bait
Wow is right. Ooooo man....I don't need another hobby!
I as able to test this bait out today.
After some modification, I was very happy with the end result.
Since the DT-16 is the standard of this class (IMO), I had it at hand to compare.
They're about dead even on max casting distance, but the DT is a little more consistent in flight, mine will cartwheel at times, which hurts the distance. I'll have to figure that one out.
They both dig hard and fast......I was killing the mid-teens with it (as does a DT). I think I was maxing out in the 18' range, which I was a little surprised at. It's right where I want it.
A slightly larger model should easily be able to bust 20'.
The action is tight and lively....a little snappier than the DT, and slightly more buoyant (although DT's seem to vary somewhat in this department). Mine has more tail movement.
More experimenting to do!

Jon, thats great man that it turned out so well. I'm a little more surprised of the tight and lively action than the depth I guess.I still can't get over the paint job, super job .
Sounds sweet man! Definitely sounds like the kind of action I like. Were you able to test out any of your other baits?
QuoteSounds sweet man! Definitely sounds like the kind of action I like. Were you able to test out any of your other baits?
Yes - - I tested them for about 5 hours.
I brought my Lexan, super-glue and tin snips to make different lips and mods on-the-fly. Lots of experimenting.
Lip size has a critical effect on how a lure behaves - more than (in my observations) lip shape.
I brought both rounded lips and square lips and interchanged them in the same baits - - the difference is not terribly pronounced on my baits between the two.
A small line-tie movement has a much bigger impact on the action, as does lip angle - and changing the relationship between lip angle and line-tie position. You can create different types of the same action with this: a tight action with a high frequency wiggle vs. a tight action with a quick roll.
Lip size is critical....pushing the size of the lip starts to destabilize the bait - this was REALLY apparent on the deep crank. The difference between tame and jackhammer is very small.
Also apparent on the shallow cranks, as pushing the lip size makes the bait start to "struggle."
The short-round is a really cool little bait - and hunts (for guys into that kind of thing) quite a bit. I think hunting is a bit overrated, but I'll take it. I think the bait struggling against the size of the big square lip could one of the factors. Cutting down the lip tames the lure a bit......I prefer the action of the bigger lip.
That is a very enlightening post right there. I've tried to figure out what little thing makes a bait do it's dance. That helps a lot.
Just curious, how do you change the line tie on the water?
Just fantastic Jon, beautiful work.
This post should be a great inspiration to the new builders, your comments on line tie position are spot on.

X2 Awesome work!!!!!!!
Awesome String...!!!
Meant to ask you, did you make a light box for your picture's? They look great. I've tried making one before but just could not get the lighting right. What kind of light are you using?

This was a combination of natural light and a ballast-style halogen ceiling light I had laying in the garage.
The white background is a sheet of computer printer paper.
Only the best around here! ;D
(I'm using a meat fork for an airbrush holder...)

That looks really good man.
Great job Stringjam! That baby looks AWESOME!
That is one of the prettiest crankbaits I've ever seen. When I finally start making mine, I hope it's at least half as nice as yours. Nice, nice work.
