I had a thread for each bait I've made. I think it would be better to just add to one posting from now on.
Here is my latest and third bait I've made. Things different from the first two are, carved gills, deeper diver, more slender shape, and through wire.
I chose this style, because I've seen them coughed up many times from the bass I've pulled up onto the deck of my boat here in Maine. Not sure what it is, some kind of shad I guess, (american shad?). Black back, silver to white towards the belly. I'll find out if it works in the spring.
Fantastic job! Love the gill plates.
Beautiful work!

I agree, you gots some mad skillz there dude..
Nice job, seems like your getting Right into it.
I got some #4 hooks on it today.... now if there was just summer water to try it out. Ah well, it floats good in a dish in the sink!

I was so excited when I made mine I tied some line to it and dragged it around the tub.

HaHa! I did the same thing with my first attempt.
That is a piece of art for sure. Incredible job! I'd like to get into hardbaits one day when I have the time to focus on it.
Here is another bait I just finished. Not sure what it is... I wanted it very, very green.
Along with the the talk in some threads on this site about the colors that bass are attracted to, I have produced a very green bait. Still not green enough I think as I succumbed to the, 'make the lure for the fisherman rather than the fish' idea. I couldn't just make just a green bait. Considering fishermen of yore used to have great success with simple bait colors like the one below (BTW, red is the other color bass see good) I sometimes wonder if lures are more art pieces for us rather than the fish. Are we licking our chops for the bait more than the bass do? Enter the bait monkey's right?
Anyway, Here's a link to my youtube channel that shows this and other builds It's about 20 minutes. It contains some thoughts on color too.
Fishermen did just find with this. I used to as a kid eons ago... Although it's fun to make eleborate, colorful stuff do the fish really care?
These just arrived today, along with a timer. I'll get started on the build tomorrow. A UV resin curing tank.
Cool....enjoy
Nice work, really like that color!!
I made the uv curing light...
do you make this in a top water

Actually, I've only made about 5 baits so far so this is new to me. I've not done a top water yet but it's probably going to be a thing eventually. It takes about 3 hrs to make one if you don't count glue/finish drying times so, I'm making one anytime I feel like it. Plus, now that I've got all the stuff it's only about 40 cents a lure.
Well, I finished two more baits. Different. I think I like my others better. But, the UV light device was a success.
think this would be an amazing color topwater here in maine
My latest bait is a Segmented swimbait. It's my first one and the hinges are made of cloth. Yup, cloth. I don't know if there are any others like this out there. I'm sure someone has tried it before. Maybe there are commercial ones available. I haven't seen any.
Also, new things for me with this one are my first tied treble trailer hook with yellow bucktail and the second use of my UV resin curing chamber, which if you saw the video of it's build, works so good I can't believe it.
My first rattle Jerkbait....I really like this one. And I made everything, lure, loops, eyes... etc.
I received these fluorescent airbrush colors today....Gonna razzle-dazzle the fish. Or it will just look pretty to humans. Actually, I'm only going to use only the blue and orange on the bait in the background. Video in a few days.
Fluorescent colors are extra transparent so do them over a white primer for maximum vibrancy. You can also under paint them with black and white to get your patterns set up, then shoot the colors over top of them for a less cartoony and more HD appearance. Not sure what you're going for.
Also, because they are so transparent, don't be scared to paint silver as the base layer and the fluorescent over top. You'll have a reflective nuclear color.

In fact it will be painted over silver in this case..... Thanks for the info. I am going to try them first over a piece of painted pvc pipe. Got to see how they go.
The blue will be saddling the back of the bait after white and then silver scale pattern. The orange will be a bit around the gills and under the head.

Cant wait to see it!
Another bait leaves the shop. This one is a Roach bait. A fish onliy seen in Europe and Asia as I understand it. But it looked so good I had to make one.
After making a handful of baits I think this one came out great. New skills with this one, more detailed carving and use of fluorescent paints. As usual, everything is handmade, the body, the eyes, eyelets, etc. The video on this one is only fifteen minutes long.
New bait... strange one this time. Fashioned (very loosely) after a Goa'uld symbiote from Stargate SG-1 (a TV show with 10 seasons under it's belt). Just having some fun.... Wonder if the Bass watch that show? If they do they won't get near it.

Indeed.....
For those reading this.. you have to be a Stargate aficionado to appreciate the joke.

Nice bait! It could be Alewife or Blueback Herring. We have a few lakes here that feed out to the ocean. The Alewife migrate back through outflow streams back to the main lake to spawn. The bass and Pickerel are oversize for our area in these spots. During the Alewife spawn the shorelines look like they're boiling. It's tough to catch anything during this period as the bass gorge on them. I found a Berkley bait that sort of comes close, but yours looks closer to the real deal. Nice job!

Maybe that's what they are. Some times of the year the surface does look like a thousand small fish are picking at the surface. The ones here actually are more of a white with black back. Very thin and slender.

That's hilarious. I was literally just downloading some Stargate STLs for my 3D printer.
Getting ready to tie my first 'real' fly. With actual fly tying materials that don't come from the craft isle at Walmart this time.
I purchased some stuff, and built a drawer just for it in just a little over three minutes. And, the latter half of this video is a truly great, personal fish story that is the equivalent of a family heirloom tale.
Enjoy...

That was a good story, enjoyed it. Good luck on tying your flies and streamers.
My first fly with real materials. It's certainly a beginner's fly, but I'll get better. I need better materials and better feather choices to tie common flies.
