here is a baby bass lure that im workin on. right now the first coat of epoxy is drying and tomorrow when its all dry i will paint the back and belly to match the finish on it.
this pic really makes the finish look messy. you cant really tell its a baby bass in the pic, its because the lure is so reflective its difficult to photograph it.
but here is the picture:
ok the epoxy is a bit more set now and i was able to get a better pic.
here is a more "accurate" picture of the lure:
still have to wait for tomorrow to paint the back and belly.
you guys think i should paint a little red around the gill area?
Looks awesome. Cant wait to see the finished product.
I definitely think the red strip at the gill makes a lure look more realistic.
That looks nice. Looks like a real fish catcher.
Very nice. I am planning on doing a little experimnting with lure painting myself. Not so much the carving yet, but painting them. Can I ask what you process is for layering(primer, painting epoxy,etc..)? I have done some searching in this forum but have only found bits & pieces. If I have missed a discussion, a link would be great!
I was thinking it would go, sealer(if wood) primer, painting, epoxy. It almost looks as though from some peoples creations, they must had a layer of epoxy before painting because of the "thickness" I see on near the screw eyes under the paint. Could someone clarify? It seems most use the 2-ton epoxy, but also I saw envirotex too. Any thoughts on which is more durable(if one is even better)?
I have an airbrush and would love to give this a shot! I'm sure it'll help pass the next few months a little quicker
I realy like your paint job! I see a lot of nice painted baits but there is something very natural about that bait.
Looks sexy D
That process is called photo finish, it is the same process as putting foil on a bait. The real trick is getting the pic to fit the size of your bait.
It makes a cool looking bait, but is not the easiest process to master.
That bait looks very good.
Nice nice work man. I really like the looks of that bait.
I can't wait until you finally get your truck and paint it.
That truck could look like one big crankbait!
As usual, your paiting is excellent.
Keep up the good work.
glad you all like this lure thank you very much for the compliments!
i had the chance to paint the back and belly today so they blend in with the rest of the lure. i think i did OK...there is always room for improvement though. i also painted a thin red line behind the gill to accent the head a little bit more. over all i am VERY pleased with how this bait turned out and i cant wait to catch a few bass on it!
the epoxy over the paint is still wet so i'll post some pics tomorrow when its cured and the bait is fishable.
McCallister, you should try visiting www.tackleunderground.com (hope that link works) and cehcking out their forums. lots of great bait making info over there.
and by they way, you are correct with your "layering process"
ok the epoxy has cured now and i got a few photos.
the side view:
another view (slightly less glare):
the top and belly. i hand painted the top and belly with a paintbrush those $0.50 bottles of acrylic paint that you find at craft stores. i think i made a nice transition from the photo finish to the paint. let me know what you think!
Yea you did a great job on the blending. Can't tell a difference in some spots
Looks great. Be sure to post pics of all the fish you catch on it!
thanks for the compliments guys. i will TOTALLY show pics of fish i catch on it
You also need to post how much "delivered" and when are you starting to take orders, cause that, my friend, is a really nice looking bait.
Dave

lol ;D
thanks!
PM me if you are serious.
You did a REALLY nice job. That thing looks great.
Beautiful job!
wow very even flowing and natural colors it looks just like a real baby bass i like it alot did u build the bait? or just repaint? and if u repainted what crankbait is it? once again nice job you got skill

thank you for the compliments everyone
smallieking, no i did not build the bait, i just repainted it. the bait is a bass pro brand bait. i think its called "XPS Static Shad".
I'm telling you, you need to go into the bait business. Your screen name is a perfect name for a lure company. You're doing a helluva job!
lol thanks micro.
i might just have to steal that logo!
maybe i'll purchase some clear lure bodies from janns and do em up pretty and sell em.
o cool do u have a pic or link to what the crank looked like before u painted it? im just astonished on the color there are so many bb colors but none look as natural as yours
Quoteo cool do u have a pic or link to what the crank looked like before u painted it? im just astonished on the color there are so many bb colors but none look as natural as yours
thanks smallieking. im glad you like it
here is a pic of what the lure looked like before (its the circled one)
o wow big difference how did u do it? did u strip the old paint or just paint over top of it? i use to go and find old rapalas and that which had a been beaten up and then sand the lure off and then repaint but none of my paint jobs came out as good as yours just wondering how u did it
i did not sand off the old paint, i just worked right over top of it. you can still see where the old paint is on the belly and back in the first two pics (first post).
i didnt really paint the entire thing either. for the sides (the realistic looking part) i used a photo finishing method, where you print a photo on tissue paper and then glue it to foil and glue the foil to your lure. and then you epoxy over it. and the epoxy makes the tissue paper translucent and the foil shines thru. then i painted the back and belly by hand to match the photo finish.
o ok yea when i used to do it the paint was just about totally off so i would just sand off the rest then just paint it normally just paint it a solid color with a black back or something nothing too detailed
wow dave !
That's a really nice one. I'll have to give that photo-finish technique a try someday
Very nice ....It'll sure catch a ton of fish. 8-)
very nice! i would like to try doin this once. what type of foil do you use and where can you get it?
That looks very nice!
Maryland boy does good.
Dave, it is beautiful. You really did a super job!
Quotevery nice! i would like to try doin this once. what type of foil do you use and where can you get it?
i use foil tape (adhesive backed foil) and it comes in rolls like duct tape, and you can get it pretty much anywhere. i got mine at true value, but im sure places like lowes, home depot, walmart, etc. would have it.
alright thanks! ill have to give it a try sometime (gotta make it through the winter somehow) how do you print onto the tissue paper? to you tape it to regular paper or maybe lightly glue it?

glue stick around the edges of the tissue paper and stick it to the regular paper.
