i dont like pitchin and flippin, dont like drop shot, and dont like lite tackle ( 6-8 lb test on spinning gear )
I'm not a big fan of Carolina rigging, I have a hard time feeling bites and I don't really have the patience for it.
Alwyas thought that Crank Bait weren't for me, until I gave them an honest shake. I am just now starting to experiment with Pitching.

Why did I guess that? :-? Good luck with it! 8-)
I'll answer this question right after I receive my challenge in the Member's Challenge contest!

The key to C/R is a very good sensitive rod.

the key is to catch some fish on it to keep you intrested in the technique if you throw a crig for hours upon hours and no fish then youll never go to it again best thing to do is try it some semi shallow areas so you can get the feel for it and know youll catch some fish to keep you pumped thats the best way i learned to practice this technique before actually moving out and throwing it in deep water with a little confidence in it
Carolina rigs(workin on it this summer I can see this goin nowhere)
Spinner Baits I like Plastic Worms and Wooden Plugs and topwater
Bait Casting I actually started gettin it but I see no reasons to give up spinning
I dont use carolina rigs at all, since I love Texas rigs so much.
I rarely use crankbaits, as I'm a big spinnerbait guy.
Wow I'm surprised that some of you guys don't like C rigging. I at first thought I didn't like it after trying it once. Then one day I just made myself use it and have liked it ever since. I don't really not like any technique there are some I use more than others but not one that I wouldn't use. If I had to name a technique it would be live bait I don't really see it as much of a challenge for myself but don't condone anyone who uses it though because we all have at some point and time.
C-rigging, 3-way rigging, and believe it or not, the trusty jig. I just haven't been able to produce on those (except finesse jigs). I don't know why, because I've given them all an honest shot. But, not every technique is for everyone.
Take spinnerbait fishing. Now THAT is my comfort zone. When I'm throwing spinnerbaits, you're in MY house now! Same goes with Texas rigged worms.
Give me 2 rods - one of each - and I'll catch fish.
for me it is c-rig and the spinnerbait. I have been using the spinnerbait, but no fish. :'(
Hey Glenn What is 3 way rigging Dont let the bait monkey know I asked this question Please!!!!!!!!!
I would have said carolina rig, but I bought the beads and swivels and have decided to give it another, more commited try. Drop shotting seems like a big yawn, so I have only done it once or twice.
I haven't had much success with crank baits, but I throw them anyway once in awhile just to see if I can gain some confidence in them. My go to is the t-rigged worm and I use that most of the time.
spinnerbaiting just isnt my forte. I catch lots of fish with them, but I'd much rather use plastics or jigs.
I still can't figure out how to catch them from the couch or my desk.
heres how i would break down this post:
from the bank,
c-rigging is a pain in the a**, and it does work, just lobbing that bad boy in most places sucks.
drop shot sucks in most situations, again it can be used but to limited rewards
jigs too. although finesse jigs work better for some reason
from the boat:
who am i kidding, it all works from the boat! but larger jigs just dont have a place in my heart.
seriously, cranks, t-rigs, spinnerbaits and vibration lures are my comfy-lures and i try to use them when ever possible.
I have yet to catch on a spinnerbait, crankbait or jig.... I keep on trying though.
not a fan of Carolina rigging. I spend time each season trying to learn or get more proficient at something...I spent alot of time with the C rig last season and walked away from it feeling like..."Well, that sucked"!
Not a big fan of tubes either...
I suck hard at C-riggin. All the way from properly rigging it, casting with the horribly unwieldly thing, or catching ANYTHING with it. I have never tried dropshotting either, however to me that doesn't seem all that different than tight-lining for catfish, except for the fact that the bait isn't on the bottom. Swimbaits are pretty much alien to me as well.
But if I had to break it down it'd be like this:
Fish Catchers for me: Crankbaits, Soft Plastics(T-Rig, Jig Heads), Jerkbaits,
Sorta Fish Catchers(I either have an OK day with 'em or I get skunked): Spinnerbaits, Jigs, Topwater
Could't Catch A Boot With: C-Rigg
Stuff I Haven't Tried....YET: Drop-Shot, swimbaits
i hate c-rigs even though i have caught fish on them.i hate drop shots even though i have caught fish on them.
I love c-rigging. It is one of my most productive ways of fishing. I also like small jigs/grubs on light tackle. I know I'm in the minority but I just don't have much patience with crankbaits, esp. deep divers. I have caught fish on them but all that cranking doesn't suit my style of fishing. Same with spinnerbaits. I guess I'm really really not much of a power fisherman.
i'm not much of a drop shot kind of guy or a jig...but i love spinnerbaits!
Lets see.... What do I NOT use ???
Plastic worms,
Crankbaits,
Spinnerbaits,
Jigs,
Chatterbaits,
SENKOS,
.....but you said "techniques"......
Okay...
no Drop Shotting,
no Flipping,
no night fishing
There's probably a bunch more fishing stuff that I "don't do", but this is just right off of the top of my head.
So my question to any of you guys is, "Is there anybody here who thinks that I have limited my chances at sticking the monsters I'm after, because of all the baits and techniques I have eliminated" ???
Peace,
Fish
QuoteHey Glenn What is 3 way rigging Dont let the bait monkey know I asked this question Please!!!!!!!!!
A 3-way rig is somewhat of a modified walleye rig. You tie a 3-way swivel to the end of your line and attach 2 monofilament leaders of lesser test to the remaining loops, one longer than the other (about 3 feet and 18"). On the long end, attach a 3-ounce ball weight. On the other, attach a shallow diving crankbait via a snap.
To cast, you don't. Put your trolling motor on about mid-speed (for starters), and slowly lower the rig over the side of the boat. Do it fast, and the rig will tangle.
Now, simply troll around productive areas. Speed up or slow down until you figure out how the bass want it.
This is a good deep-water presentation that works especially well during the colder months, believe it or not. It can catch some seriously big pigs. However, just like the C-rig, I haven't mastered it yet.
The two techniques on the bottom of my list are the caroliona rig and it's bass-akcwards cousin, the drop shot rig. I can catch fish on them, but, I find these two rigs to be totally boring to fish. I'll have to have exhausted all other possibilities before I use either of these.
jig
dropshot
c-rig
Mainly cause I just never use them.
I should have added to my post;
Although one might {rightfully} believe that I have gotten to be very "single minded" in my pursuit of trophy bass, please remember that bass fishing has fallen off to maybe 50 or 60% of my years fishing.
For any other species that will bite my hook and rip drag, I use a ton of different techniques, lures, and baits.
Peace,
Fish
For me
1) Live bait
2) Trolling
3) UL tackle
Fish Chris,
I think having a legitimate chance at catching largemouth bass over 15 lbs put you and the California Hawg Hunters in a unique class of fishermen. If most fishermen in other states were fishing for those fish they would be fishing for The One bass that may or may not live in their reservior. (I might have to make exceptions for Texas and Florida). Other than those states (CA, TX and FL), nearly everyone else in the country is hoping to catch 10 lbs or maybe just a little better. !0 lb bass are not common, but there are lots of them throughout the country. Using some of the baits/ lures that you don't use will GREATLY improve most people's chance of catching what they consider a monster.
So, no you are not limiting yourself, but you would be if you were fishing in about forty-six other states.
Drop shotting just is not my thing. But Crig .. bread and butter for me along with jig head worms.
Glen ... Have never tried the 3-way rigs but have had luck with a 1 oz weight and a floating or shallow (0-2') crankbait tied to a 2-3' leader. Read about it on one of the articles on here last year and decided to try it.
C-rig
Favorites:
T-rigged worm
Topwater
Buzzbaits
Crankbaits
Lipless crankbaits
Not favorites but I'm very comfortable fishing:
C-rig
spinnerbaits
jig n trailer
pitchin
flippin
lite line fishing
senko
sluggo's
Deep crankin
Not comfortable with because I haven't spent enough time fishing:
Drop shotting
Chatterbait (don't even own one yet but will have to to finish my challenge)
swimbaits (don't own one)
finally, the technique I can't stand:
Verticle jigging with a spoon. (Yes, I own some and have caught fish this way but I hate it)
Don't laugh. Any kind of power fishing.
I notice alot of people responding "carolina rig"......to quote Gerald Swindle, "the hardest thing about fishing a carolina rig is staying awake".I believe that and its hard for me to fish "the rig" also just because it's a slower presentation.I can catch fish with the rig but I'd much rather throw something else.
My thing is Rat L Traps......not much luck with them at all.Granted,I'm not fishing lakes that have vegetation like alot of people do that have success with the Rat L Trap......just not my thing I guess.

Wow, that's pretty close to my list. I would add spinnerbaits and walking the dog to the favorites and move buzzbaits to something I'm comfortable fishing. Deep Crankin' is on the line of being a favorite.
I've never used a drop shot rig. I'm just now at the point where I'm proficient with the c-rig. The drop shot will be next. I don't own a chatterbait or swimbait either.
I almost never use crankbaits. I own one or two that I haven't even taken out of the box.
I'd have to say the technique that isn't for me is vertical jigging spoons in the winter on deep structure.I've read all the articles, but I can't see myself getting that desperate.By the way the Carolina rig is my go to technique this time of the year in the deep South.I mean,it's about the only way to get any action down here when the water temp hits the high 80's.
Wacky rigged Senko....too slow for me.
Im not much on fishing fast with a crankbait or a spinnerbait. I do that when I think I can get away with it but I do alot better fishing slow with soft plastics and jigs. I love to flip and pitch or throw a senko. I guess I just feel like I have a better chance of catching a big fish if I use something slow.
C-rigging. I just can't get em' to bite it.
I guess i got to go with the majority, c-rigging and drop shotting.
Anything to do with plastic baits (t-rig, c-rig, weightless, wacky, drop shot, etc) or jigs.
Jigs, I have never caught a fish on a jig.
And lucky me, my challenger is sending me off to fish with a jig!
Spinnerbaits, can't hardly catch a thing on them.
The c-rig is my nemesis, I throw it a lot I get quite a few bites I just can't seem to get a hook in them.
I do need to get a lighter more sensitive rod for c-rigging!!
Dont mean to sounds like a broken record but I HATE the c-rig. I dont know why I have tryed it time and time again I just find it too complicated and non productive.
I also have gotten skunked so many times when I just go out and throw a crank, need to work on that.
Spinnerbait. Don't know why i just don't like to throw them.
I have never tried a "Drop Shot" rig.
I don't own any swimbaits so I've never tried those.
I fish a jig just about everytime I go out, yet I rarely ever catch anything on them.
Just now really getting into trying to fish jerkbaits.
My favorites:
Plastics (Worms, flukes & Senko's mostly)
Crankbaits
Any top water baits.
I'll bet for most of us, we'd like to learn all of the techniques and lures. I've already posted on this thread and I have my weaknesses and techniques and lures that I prefer, but this isn't because the other ones aren't for me. We're all proficient with the techniques and lures that we were started on. I want to learn them all. I'm sure I'll still have favorites, but it can only improve my fishing ability by adding more tools to the arsenal.
Winter time spooning. Sometimes you don't move the spoon at all, just let it set there.
I like to keep the blood moving in the cold and just sitting there doesn't keep me fired up enough.
If I were a tournament fisherman I would spend at least 75% of my time flipping and dropshotting. I don't like either.
Flipping: Heavy equipment, jerking fish out of the water, just not my cup of tea.
Dropshotting: I only catch small bass.
I also don't fish spinnerbaits much, mostly because it seems everyone does.
I occasionally fish spoons, but talk about B-O-R-I-N-G...Well, maybe if I caught better fish on these lures I would have a different opinion, but I haven't.
Note: Last summer I was bottom fishing in the Gulf with at 75' in 250' of water, verticle jigging with an 8 oz. "spoon" that reminded me of the spike you might place on the top of a Christmas tree. The equipment, weight and dept made this very physical fishing. However, I landed my biggest fish ever, an 85 lb amberjack. The fish just about killed me. Fish on at around 8:00 AM, boated forty-five minutes later. I didn't fish the rest of the day until about 5:OO, or a hundred beers later!
It's not often that I can't come up with some kind of response / argument.... But your response above (limiting my chances) is spot on ! Very good points !
Peace,
Fish
My least favorite thing is deep structure fishing with any lure. I get impatient in 20+ ft of water.
I catch 'em in deeper water but I'd rather be fishing shallow. Not necesarily pounding the bank though
Keeping with the theme, LOL, c-rigging!
Drop shot rig. Even when I fish slow it's usually not that SLOW! Also the lakes I fish are either to weedy or to shallow.
My least favorite technique is fishing with a jig. While I have caught some decent sized fish on them it is tougher to fish a jig. Plus here in Florida I can't seem to get them to bite a jig. Chatterbaits have produced a few fish but not jigs.
For me, it's crankbaits. I pretty much never fish them, mainly because I mostly fish from the bank and I'm not so willing to take the risk of losing them. From a boat, it's easier to go after it if you get hung up. So, since I never fish 'em, I have no confidence in them. I'd like to change that this year.
don't work- Jig and pig ( not one singe bite)
C-rig ( lots of bank fishing and harder to do from the bank I believe )
t-rig " "
pitch and flip
maybe I'm not a slow patient fisherman?
does work #1 SWIM baits!
spinner baits
crankbaits
buzz baits
Was always terrible at fishing for 20years ( had some tough lakes to be fair), gave it up for 20years then took it up again in different area of the state. Still no luck until I tried SWIM baits, then I gained confidence or whatever and now I can catch them on several things. Fishing is fun finaly, just like on the shows ( not quite as many fish as the shows though!)
Just bought my first boat so now I'm going to do some experimenting.
Wow! I cant believe how many people posted drop-shot rigging as a least favorite. I love to fish a drop shot rig. Also I cant believe all the people that posted jigs as a least favorite. I guess that we are all a little differant and could all learn alot from each other. I think more people like to fish fast than slow.
